This game is comparable to which MMORPGs? CIty of Heroes?

CoH is probably the only MMORPG that is somewhat comparable to it. But even if you don't play the beta and just read all the interviews you'll notice that it's quite a different thing from most known mmorpg's to date and that they have done everything to make sure that even the tiniest gameplay elements have a matrix backstory to them, it's not like they've taken the matrix universe and have changed it so it can fit in a mmorpg game, it's the other way around. Resulting in very immersive gameplay and a very fascinating experience for matrix fans... And no, I'm not working for Monolith or WB, I'm just an enthusiastic beta tester :) . (although I do get to send in some screenshots every now and then, some of which make it to the website *points at first screenshot posted*)

For a game supposed to enclose the feeling and continue the Matrix "trend", these screenshots (and other previous media on this game) could be taken from "Average Game XI19 : The Random-Kitsch-Looking Quest" that it would not even surprise me.

That is somewhat disturbing for me to see how some of the movies that captured (and later inspired) lots of videogames clichés and printed a very visually recognizable universe failed to generate truly engaging and faithful game heritage, artistically speaking.

As a fan of this trilogy, I may be wrong, but I'm still quite disappointed neither Shiny nor Monolith succeeded in that criteria. I'm not saying this will play like crap (although Enter the Matrix did), just that I do not feel attracted by this game at all and just felt like writing on it...

I know what you mean... And it's not that I want to impose my fanboy-ism or whatever people wanna name it on others but to be honest: I had the same opinion on the game before I entered the beta, I didn't like ETM either and I thought MxO would be just as bad or even worse... I especially feared that the whole matrix 'style' was going to be ruined by the game. I'm happy to say I found that I was completely wrong and I couldn't be happier with MxO now that I'm playing it. The screenshots always made me believe it was gonna be crappy, screenshots just don't seem to do the game justice I guess.

If this game is suppose to take place after the final movie.... why have we returned to the green tint then? Sati ended the green tinged Matrix... everything else(underlying tension still existing between some folks and some machines, including the independent ones like the Merovingian makes sense... oh yeah and why does Morpheus look so... chubby in the ads I've seen in mags? He's put on weight for sure... but his face... it's... badly done.

There have been hints on the website that we'll certainly see more of Sati and as you can see in screenshots Sati definately has some influence on the matrix now:
FPScreen121804large.jpg

Sati wasn't meant to end the green tint though, I see the green tint merely as a stylistic way of reminding you that it's a slightly flawed reality because the machines are not all that good in creating a truly realistic virtual world although there surely is a complex system of control in place used to brainwash blue pills into believing that whatever they see is real and to ignore any anomolies they might encounter.

And you're referring to the Morpheus concept art... Yeah, I don't like that either, hope the in-game model looks better to be honest.

Not sure how up you are on your Matrix lore but uh yeah Sati WAS meant to end the green tint that was her gift to the machine world her tribute to Neo. Thanks for posting that shot, I hadn't seen any non-green ones.

Oh yeah BTW if these are official screenshots why is your nick in the first one?

I just hope you're right and TMO doesn't result in such an utter failure trumped by its misplaced ambition, that even the more-hardcore-than-me fans will have a hard way convincing me it's a good adventure to experience.

Crap. I just hope they found a girl with a less irritating voice and diction as in the movie. She was quite probably one of the weakest and impersonal characters of the entire trilogy...

"Look ! Look ! *with emotionless eyes*, I'm talking with a naive intonation because I'm supposed to represent purity and innocence, but to bow to the facts, I don't have a clue what it means.". Mary Alice could not even compete, which at this point is a resounding performance.

Well, I won't bother you with my unoptimistic way of thinking and just let you enjoy the beta while it lasts.

I thought her tribute to Neo was introducing the warm friendly atmosphere to the matrix with the weather conditions we saw at the end of Revolutions, now that you mention it the green tint is indeed gone at the end of Revolutions (well damn, I didn't know that yet! thx) and now that I think of it, the green tint is also gone when the warm rainbowy weather conditions in The Matrix Online appear (check screenshot)... But most of the time the green tint is still there. Interesting... There have been hints on the website that we'll see where Sati's story leads in MxO so I'm pretty sure this is not some flaw.

As I said between brackets on the first post, some beta testers (like me ;) ) know people to whom they can send their screenshots to get a shot at ending up on a daily screenshot. If you check the image location you'll see that the only way that these are not official screenshots is that I hacked thematrixonline.warnerbros.com .

Have you ever seen a franchise fall so far so quickly as The Matrix?

The first film came out and it was soooo cool and different and made you say "What the hell did I just see?". It got a groundswell of support, became a cultural phenomenon, and inspired a lot of other films, TV shows and games. News Week even had Neo on the cover and declared it "The Year of The Matrix".

Then the second film hit. The luster came off the franchise, many fans were pissed off and felt cheated, and it generally left a bad taste in most viewers mouths. The Enter The Matrix game did nothing to help the cause. By the time the third film came around, which I happened to enjoy, the damage had been done. Many fans weren't going to like the third film because the second one didn't meet expectations.

I think this attitude has carred over to The Matrix Online. Many Matrix fans felt burned by the last two films, and feel that this game, fairly or not, is going to suck. Many of the previews make it look like it's a fighting game where you get to dress up your character in all kinds of outfits. There isn't enough info out there to really know what the game is about. What you'll be doing on a daily basis, are there quests, etc. I fear that TMO is doomed even before launch, in no small part due to the general let down of last two films. It's a shame, but I also think it's a reality.

The Matrix franchise is extremely controversial as a whole and while it's certainly true that the two sequels were far less appreciated by the mainstream audience I think you're underestimating the huge Matrix fanbase that does appreciate all three movies. I myself find that the movies only got better, Revolutions being my favorite of the three. Aside from the ETM game I absolutely love everything about The Matrix (all three movies, Animatrix, Comics) and am fascinated by the matrix universe. Most other beta players are like me and are eager to get into the actual game when it goes live (beta testers are only testing the main part of the game, we don't have access to a lot of things that will start when the game is launched). So there certainly is a solid fanbase for MxO.

I'm not saying that you're wrong about the movies or anything, just like many others you don't like the sequels and I respect that.

Btw DarienA... After checking out a few things I can say to you with certainty that the green tint returning and only being absent when there's 'Sati weather' is a conceptual decision... Why or how will be shown when the game goes live (if you jack in of course).

Actually, I'm not saying that I don't like the sequels at all. I thought the second one was just "ok" but I liked the third one quite a bit. Not as much as the first, but I still enjoyed it. I have all three on DVD and have a certain fascination with The Matrix universe myself.

That said, the mainstream audience disappeared pretty quickly following the second film. A lot of people went to see the third because they had invested so much in the series already that they had to see how it ended. I do think there is still a solid hard-core matrix following, but the masses have moved on, and I just don't think that bodes well for this game, even if it is very good.

Are you sure this is so bad? I prefer an awesome community of players, ahum, excuse me, red pills who play the game and visit the forums while being in-character all the time and who totally get into the whole story side of the game and who make it all a real fun and fascinating place to be in over an overpopulated game full of idiots who spend most of their time complaining why they can't fly like the one ;) . So far, the beta has a wonderful community and the state that the franchise is in actually seems positive to me in this aspect. Of course as the community gets seriously populated people will have to work hard to keep it 'cozy' as it is now and you can bet your money that it'll get seriously populated... The combat system alone will make this game stand out from other mmorpg's and attract so many of those that can't get with traditional mmorpg combat.

The real question is whether you would enjoy the game if you thought the movies were crap?

You'd most likely enjoy the gameplay but the game might not interest you so much as it very much focuses on a story-driven world, as said in some interviews, the game IS the fourth installment in the matrix saga.

All I want to know is this, can I be an Agent?

If not, -1 sale (well thats not saying much, I'm not leaving FFXI anyway)

You play MxO by 'jacking in' to the matrix, so no, you're a red pill, not an agent or an exile... However, as said in interviews (just trying to stress that I'm not breaking the NDA), you can work for the agents or for the exiles as well as for Zion.

Bah, and I wanted to run around that game ending everything with "...Mr. Anderson."

"We meet again... Mr. Anderson."
"Have a nice day... Mr. Anderson."
"I tanked the last one, you tank this one... Mr. Anderson."

I'm all for a good community, as that can make or break a game. What I was saying is that that community may be small now, and not big enough to support this game long term, even if it's a good game. The Matrix fan base isn't close to what Star Wars has, and Galaxies never did draw the audience that it was expected. Of course, there were a lot of issues with Galaxies that may have been a part of that as well. I'm just saying that TMO may face an uphill battle in gaining subscribers, especially with WoW being as big as it is. I felt that TMO had to come in a lower price to try to compete, and if I recall correctly, they're about the same in monthly fees.

Ah ok, I see your point. Personally I think a lot of people will jump on it once the reviews come rolling in... I'm confident that this game will set new standards for mmorpg's and many of those who are not drawn to it by it being 'the matrix mmorpg' will play it for being 'the groundbreaking mmorpg with kick-ass combat, innovative flexible ability system and a dynamic story-driven world'.
