The new Barbie doll comes out of the box with type 1 diabetes

Worldwide only 216,000 girls under the age of 10 have type 1 diabetes (rough estimate). That's worldwide, not just US.
I don't really care how many dolls Mattel sells though. If a young girl is diagnosed with that, it makes her feel different and this helps her feel better about it then that's nice.

But Barbie is supposed to be aspirational. Those girls should be aspiring to not have been born with diabetes.

Maybe you are referring to type 2 diabetes with this comment.

Type 1 diabetes is different, it isn't reversable, and it isn't a result of eating McD's and snickers bars for every meal.
Exactly. I didn't understand why he reacted with "lol" when I pointed this out, but then I saw his tag and it all made sense.

I don't get why stuff like this (and a wheelchair, shades and a cane, etc) aren't just costume accessories. Why the need to creat an entirely new doll for what is an invisible illness? He'll, even an amputee or vitiligo barbie can just be made for a regular one with a marker or a pair of scissors.

Fat barbie is really the only one, and even that could be a padded set of clothes.

Presumably for Mattel its for advertising purposes - Barbie with a new bag isnt going to make headlines, Barbie with a blood glucose reader does. Doubt sales of the specific doll makes any difference but it likely helps sales of Barbie overall along with boosting the brand iamge.

Not really, just USA adjacent. If you care to come a bit closer, we can discuss matters of another nature like Occam's razor
what goes through my head reading what you posted is that public education after COVID is a shit show everywhere.

I'm not from US either, nor adjacent.

if she doesn't take insulin (Mattel approved/sold separately, of course) she will get an amputation?
