I'd love to hear a report/review about Star Realms if you don't mind! Supposedly it's a deckbuilder game in a sci-fi theme with combat involved, and compares favorably to Dominion/Ascension.
Would you still recommend Catan? A lot of people I know wouldn'tBut Carcassonne, Catan, TtR won't stop being recommended as entry-level classics
Why in the world is that game $60?
Edit: Oh. Game Salute. /fart
$45, for expected delivery in Fall 2015. It's a 108 card deck
trade away Twilight Imperium 3 .
Highway robbers.
Edit: Oh wow. Its not even its own game, its a couple of expansions. What in the world.
Why do you hate fun?
I myself have actually never played Catan. I just know that it is supposed to be one of 'those' games, the entry-level games the get people into the hobby.Would you still recommend Catan? A lot of people I know wouldn't
"Hanabi" the game where your SO bitches to you for 30 minutes about how bad your memory is.
Such a weird game, the looks you get when you play it in bars...
Yep, 4th edition. The Amazon image shows a different edition.Edit: Mista Koo, did you get two-day delivery in your Alien Frontiers? There are still 50+ copies and I am eager to see which edition you get.
Just received Alien Frontiers (with the Factions expansion) and Forbidden Island. Can't wait to try them alongside Bang: the Dice Game this weekend (fun fact: I have a final exam on Monday ).

Glad it's the 4th, these tuck boxes are sexy:

I don't own either, but I'm thinking of getting Ticket to Ride because it seems easier to teach to non-gamers and I think the theme would be more exciting.Catan is worth owning simply because it is recognized by the non-gaming crowd. There is always a slim chance that someone will play Catan and nothing else. I do think that Ticket to Ride is coming close to the same cultural status and if you own TtR and are a good salesman or woman you can get by without owning Catan. The other game similar is Carcasonne, while an easy sell and teach, it can end flat.
Not that I know of aside from aesthetics. One of them was popped open when I received it but I easily put it back together. Is there supposed to be something wrong with those bubble pieces for alien frontiers?
Season 3 Zombicide teased, with so much CMON has yet to deliver to it's customers, but keep taking the money. Already said not going in on this one, I'm happy with the original base game.

This thread is why we need a new, more visible thread in the main OT!
Its a thread about childhood games
There are several posts in there of people saying that stuff like Monopoly is still the best board game. I'm over shitting on Monopoly, but the point is that there are people on GAF who seem unaware that there is an entire world of games beyond those games, and I feel like the new thread should really try to reach out to those people.

We need to edit the OP regardless of whether we decide to make a thread or not. It's a bit outdated, too text heavy, and all the images are broken.
I would like to help whoever decides to make a new one. Also I'd suggest a group work on the games choices on categorization.
Maybe a game of the week feature would be helpful to newcomers? Discussions usually revolves around the current "hot" games and those are most likely not a good place to start a new hobby with.
After lots of research I got Conflict of Heroes - Awakening the Bear! yesterday. Looking forward to playing it tonight!
Thanks, one of the deciding factors were positive feedback here in this thread. Having read the rule book a few times now everything seems logical and it's not overly complicated. That is a great game! Good pick!

Would love to read a write up if you were so inclined after you have a few games under your belt - always like to be aware of the wargames out there.
Probably not the best time to do this, but here's a reminder for anyone in the bay area (or happens to be flying in to the bay area!).
A friend of mine is going to be hosting a prototype game hosting event called Protospiel San Jose for this coming Friday and weekend! Attendance will be free, snacks will be provided and there will be a chance to win prizes. The best part is 3 days to play some awesome games in development! Hope to see you there!
When: May 9th to May 11th
Where: Game Kastle (1350 Coleman Ave, Santa Clara, CA 95050)
