The new WRX STi - or how I learned to hate the current auto market

Subaru has announced a new version of the WRX STI that will debut at the Tokyo Motor Show. We've looked at this one six ways 'til Sunday (maybe seven) and we still can't make sense of it. But, hear us out. One of the main knocks against the STI has long been that it's a little too porky. But, when you base a performance car on a plebeian chassis, that's the price you pay. Another knock is that the STI -- while potent -- is just not as hardcore as the Mitsubishi EVO, even though the EVO X is a little, well, less hardcore than the EVO IX. So obviously Subaru's going to address these concerns with a special, lightweight edition STI, right? Well...

Meet the WRX STI Carbon. It has a carbon fiber roof. And a five-speed automatic transmission borrowed from the Legacy - no manual. And... suede seats. Yup, that's it. Now, we like the roof, don't get us wrong. Removing weight and lowering the center of gravity is exactly what the STI needs. But, a slushbox? For reals? Subaru says the five-speed auto is there to offer, "distinctive driving pleasure to a wider range of customers." Ah, the old dumbing it down so you can sell more trick. Hey, it worked for Porsche (see the Cayenne).

Let's see here, the last time Subaru tried this maneuver was in 2008 with the GE/GH third generation WRX. That went so well that Subaru was forced to relaunch the car twelve months later and rename to the 2008 WRX as the auto-only 2.5 GT. In other words, we just don't get the STI Carbon. Maybe in a year's time Subaru will be forced to rename it the Carbon GT. That would at least make some sense. Right?

This is fucking stupid, I'm quickly losing faith in the affordable performance market. First Ford decides that the US doesn't want its beastly new Focus RS, and instead offers us porky mustangs (at least the mustang is getting better)...now Subaru pulls this crap. Yes, everyone in the market for a hot hatch is going to go completely nuts over your legacy auto gearbox... I hope the Evo X refresh and other competitors completely decimate this piece of shit at retail.

Thanks for the troll, you are surely going to win the, no one gives a shit about you not giving a shit, rally.

I know it's a Subaru, but four doors has always meant automatic family car BS to me anyway.

At least now the inner workings are starting to match the body design. Does it come with a baby seat?

Yeah why is everyone so bothered about having Manual cars on the road?

Ironically my econo shitbox is a manual. But I don't pretend I'm a racecar driver.
No way, seriously? I thought that everyone that wanted to or that does drive a manual pretends to be a racecar driver.

No just people that complain that STI's aren't manuals anymore. ;)

I think that the meaning of the first post is to point out the absurdity of doing a "racecar driver"'s car like the impreza, doing a useful modification that is still in the real spirit of the brand and then switching to automatic, almost universally considered as "the pussy way" to drive a car. you can hate the people driving manual (or not, since you're doing it) but on subaru's part is really a weird move (especially if they know their public).

of course you're free to butt in in an assholish way, this is teh internet after all.

I'm not a "racecar driver" and I don't fancy to be one but I hate the lack of control that you have with automatic gears. manual for me is the only way to go.

You do realize this is an alternate version of the STI, and not a replacement, right? They will still make a MT model. Also, do we even know if this is going to make it out of Japan?

You fuckers are gonna hate me but this is exactly what I wanted. I've wanted a WRX STI as my next car for several months now but I really didn't wanna learn stick so the GT was looking attractive.

But that won't be for a few years. Who's to say they won't ditch manual transmission?

I know this has been said perhaps too many times, but I don't understand how people might not want to learn to drive stick. it's like not wanting to learn how to open a door by turning a knob, it's the same level of difficulty. old women can do it. I'm just baffled.

I thought it was the cayman. Also ... I thought that Porsche's new automatic tranny was actually faster than the manual.

I've always been baffled by this too. There's also people that say they feel that "worrying about shifting" would take their mind off the road...doesn't make any sense to me either. It must be hard to walk, chew bubblegum, and scratch your ass all at the same time too.

I wouldn't mind learning, but if I wanted to I'd probably have to pay money for courses or something because I literally don't know a single person with a manual.

Though even if I knew how to, I still wouldn't buy manual because when I've been awake for 30 minutes, the last thing I want to do is manually shift in rush hour traffic.

Manuals were a dying breed long before this happened... as someone whose first car was a manual transmission vehicle (oh so long ago and I loved every minute of it), its just something you have to accept... still if you'd rather go down kicking and screaming the whole way it will definitely give us some entertainment to watch... ;)

I feel ya though.

people need to learn to ignore the troll with the seinfeld avatar - he's wrong about pretty much everything, ever.

no manual is one thing, no dual clutch paddle shift is just a gross oversight. i imagine mitsu will gain even more marketshare with their evo...

I know it's their sports utility. I thought we were talking about sports cars though. I would rather an auto in my utility vehicle. Where as a stick makes more sense in a sports car. I wouldn't consider making a SUV "dumbing it down".

I also believe the new 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission that replaces the triptonic one is actually a step in the sportier direction. It's faster then the manual and gets better millage.

I doubt it, especially if they bring this over here. Who the fuck drives Mitusbishis? Subarus are excellent yuppie mobiles. It's the Japanese equivalent of a VW.

95% of subaru's are yuppie mobiles and Mitsu won't steal anything from that particular demographic.

the STi, however, is a tuner sportscar through and through. it competes directly with the mitsubishi evolution.

Ah ok I thought you meant the company as a whole and not their rally-tuned lines.

No not yet, but the auto tranny on the coupe is faster then the manual.
lol, who told you that?

Not CarandDriver
Although the Track package’s equipment makes some difference in the test numbers, the Grand Touring automatic’s numbers aren’t as far off as you might think. Compared with the best performance we recorded for a manual-equipped V-6 with the Track package, our automatic took 6.0 seconds to hit 60 mph versus 5.5, and the quarter-mile was covered in 14.7 seconds at 97 mph to the manual’s 14.2 at 100.
That's a half second difference in 1/4mile and 0-60 times...nothing to scuff at.

mean't better not faster, just read up on the manual gearbox in the gen coupe its janky as hell.

But I am thinking of getting the 370z manual because the synchrorev system in that is pretty neat.

It's no surprise that Subaru has done this.

Doing this with a "special edition" Auto-box is funny though. If I were them, I'd just offer the STI in either 6 speed Auto- or 6 Speed Manual and be done with it.

The other problem with this.... it's a straight up automatic. Not a DSG style tranny that is going to suck the power from the engine and end up with a very vanilla driving experience to the driver.

Having driven the Evo X a couple of times, the SST tranny in that thing is a friggin' blast to drive. It's unfortunate that Subaru has/is rushing this to market simply to make up for lost revenue with people who can't drive a stick.

Oh well--- still haven't learned their lesson after splitting their base with the WRX have they? :lol

People are completely missing the issue here. It's a special edition WRX with expensive mods to make it lighter and faster, and they're giving it a slushbox only. When the Plymouth Prowler came out and it was only available in purple with a V-6 and automatic, people laughed until they cried.

yeah I read about this yesterday, really stupid move on Subaru's part.

Not even a dual-clutch tranny? Come on!

They say they wanna reduce weight but they add a heavier auto tranny

As an 06 STI driver, I still can't get used to the look of the hatch. I really didn't like it in print but have been seeing one around town lately and it looks better in person imo.

They were laughing at how hideous it was.
