This marks the third time it's officially been up for release. This, however, is the first time there's been any details. I guess Courtney Love needs the cash badly enough that she agreed to whatever terms were put on the table. Even still, I'm not going to bother thinking about this too much until I see pictures of the set. And 3 discs is a little skimpy.

I hope that ATDI box set is still on schedule for this year. I haven't heard anything about that, officially or unofficially, since it was announced. I do want to hear that Omar record, too. I've been denying my craving for hardline pretentious spaceman music.

"greatest hits, exclusive unreleased tracks, rare b-sides, covers, videos, and exclusive live footage from one of indie rock's most influential music groups."

It's supposed to be 7CDs. That news was from April and that's all that was ever said about it. I'm sort of doubtful that ATDI has 7 discs worth or rare and unreleased material. I sort of got the impression that they used most everything they recorded, being that they didn't have lots of cash to waste on studio time.

The solo album is like boring salsa and Santana stuff. I heard some tracks a while ago. I wasn't aware that his material was from a new album or anything.

I'm willing to give it a listen. That Pitchfork review compares it to Defacto, and I'm one of the few people that enjoyed the Defacto album. I have a high tolerance for wankery. Maybe I should see if GSL has any preview tracks for DL. Their CDs are notoriously pricier than anyone else's.

EDIT: Eh, the preview track sounds interesting, but it's far too repetetive. I guess that's just the nature of being a soundtrack. However, while at the GSL site, I was looking around and saw some interesting release dates:

Mars Volta:
Catalog no.: GSL95
Title: Self-titled
Format: CD single
To be released: November 2004 (tentative)

Catalog no.: GSL96
Title: "Frances the Mute" (with FREE vinyl 12" single of GSL95)
Format: 2xLP
To be released: November 2004 (tentative)

What the hell is this? Mars Volta? Double LP? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

EDIT 2: Yup, I can confirm that Frances the Mute is the name of the new TMV album. The press release went out just this weekend, so it will likely be a few days before it's picked up on. November is the current date though it's not set in stone. No tracklist yet. And yes, double LP.

well not really...yet
Hahahaha Mars Volta double album, cant wait to hear that

And is anyone even going to care about that Nirvana box set when it hits?

No, as far as I'm concerned I own their two best albums... and I barely even play those anymore. Kurt's voice just seems so grating to me now.

Truth be told, after that *godawful* last song, you know youre right, I pretty much lost all interest in ever hearing more nirvana material
That song was so unbelievably awful it just boggles my mind

I like that song. Rather, I would like that song if it would've had Nirvana-style production, and not 'generic rock circa early 2000s'-style production.

supposedly the rest of the unfinished stuff is nothing like "You know you're right" (which i actually liked). Thats one of the reasons that bitch Courtney didn't want to bother releasing it: You know you're right was the only song with "hit potential" according to the crackwhore. Wasn't Kurt doing some much more experimental stuff just before he died? I remember reading he was working with Michael Stipe of all people.

Pitchfork hasn't loaded for me in about two weeks. I don't think I'm indie enough to be allowed to read it.

Pitchfork is the most mainstream of the indie news sites.

EDIT: You Know You're Right was shamefully overproduced and clean-sounding for a Nirvana song.

Rolling Stone published an article about the forthcoming Nirvana box set. It doesn't really contain any new information but it does echo the November release date: "The long-delayed box set of rare NIRVANA recordings will finally hit stores on November 23rd. The Universal Music set will include three CD's of unreleased NIRVANA audio recordings and one DVD of rare video footage. Retailers predict the box will be one of fall's biggest releases, along with new albums from U2 and Eminem. 'I think that in it's first week it will be our biggest box set ever,' says music buyer Carl Mello of Boston's Newbury Comics. 'We'll bring in quantity on that first week like what we would bring in on a superstar's new album.' Though the box was still in production in mid-September, it will probably include fifty tracks culled from the band's archives of unreleased studio demos, rare B-sides and selected oddities. In a 2002 interview with Rolling Stone, NIRVANA bassist Krist Novoselic said that tracks will likely include material from 'KAOS radio 1987, BBC Peel Sessions, studio outtakes, sessions that we did in north Seattle, Rio de Janeiro, In Utero outtakes, live stuff'. He also said to expect the 'Butch Vig raw mix of Teen Spirit', a rough cut that's really different.' " Courtesy of Rolling Stone.

The thing I hate about a lot of Nirvana's songs is that they seem to write half a song and then finish off the song by repeating the chorus (which usually only consists of one line) about 30 times at the end of the song. ;p

The box set is disappointing to me. Extremely so. I don't want all this rehersal shit. I don't want crappy demos that no one's ever heard before. There's a reason for that. I want a collection of every single b-side they've done, and then maybe add a few tracks on top of that.

I'll snag this for the DVD alone. Anything else is a bonus, though I'd like to hear some clean versions of 'In His Hands', Oh, The Guilt', and a few others...

Give me a break, dude - I love Nirvana but I already HAVE all the bootlegs, b-sides etc. etc.

If the box consists of all the hard-to-find (that I already have) stuff in one pretty package, then I'd be a fool to shell out money for it.

Then you don't like Nirvana.
Yeah, ok. Want to tell me my opinions on anything else? Should I vote Bush or Kerry? Wear boxers or briefs? Are you an asshole or just a giant dick?

I hate Nirvana.

I said it, I'd say it again too. The Mars Volta news is intriguing though, didn't realiz it was going to be a double LP. Crazy.

Oh wait. Haha.

Sorry Jak, I didn't mean to say you were an idiot. I read your post completely wrong.

I hope there's no hard feelings.

With all this shit coming out I'm really glad Jesus was born and all that jazz. Go Christmas. If it were not for X-Mas I would definitely not be getting this.

The 81-track With The Lights Out, which takes its name from the first line of the chorus of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," includes 68 previously unreleased tracks, including rehearsals, outtakes, demos and covers that include Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker," the Velvet Underground's " Here She Comes Now" and four Leadbelly songs. Five tracks come from an overseas promotional sampler: a 1987 radio performance of "White Lace and Strange," a 1988 demo of "Blandest," a 1990 solo acoustic version of "Lithium," a 1993 demo of "Heart Shaped Box" and a 1994 solo acoustic version of "You Know You're Right," the song that served as the single from 2002's Nirvana greatest-hits set.

A DVD features live and rehearsal footage (including an eight-song rehearsal filmed at Novoselic's mom's house in 1988), home movies, and 20 full-length videos. Thurston Moore reprises his role in Nirvana lore by penning the liner notes to the set's 60-page booklet.

Released Nov. 23. I have a lot of the songs on here already, but there's a lot that I don't have. And the DVD looks good, as well.

Purchase +1

Shit... can I hold off on this till Christmas? It would make a great present suggestion, but I'm not sure I have the self-control not to buy it.

:/

damn, this would make a nice Xmas gift for me too, but i don't think any of my friends/family know i like Nirvana that much. Time to start dropping hints!
