Financial Times: GTA VI projected to make $3.2bn in its first year | Dev cost estimates range from the high hundreds of millions to as much as $2bn

I know the IP is huge, but betting the house on it is risky. If for whatever reason it is not as successful as the previous episode, it could become the new E.T.

Doing some quick maffs, that would be about 45 million copies sold. There are currently somewhere around 80-90 million PS5 and Xbox Series consoles out there, presumably with some amount of overlap.

That means they’re expecting more than 1 out of every 2 current gen console owners to buy GTA 6. And honestly, that seems possible. Though I think it would be downright likely if GTA 6 were also to release on PC in 2025, which it absolutely will not.

Either way, it’s gonna make soooooo much money.

Note: I didn’t factor in premium versions of the game being sold at $100+, only basic versions at $70.
Yep. The game is going to be so huge, nobody is going to say there's a problem. But PC at launch would count for like 20M in the first few weeks.

2 Billion dollars is an insane amount of money for any entertainment endeavor but this game will make 2 billion dollars the first month it's released. And if it's on Switch 2 (and I bet it will be) I'd say 30 million copies in the first 3 -4 weeks is well within reach.

That number sounds insane for production cost.

I've never understood the appeal of GTA. Vice City was awesome. The others were "meh" to me. And with Rockstar not being run by the same people who built them into what they became I'm skeptical GTA 6 will be amazing.

GTAV had the luxury of releasing on both 360 and PS3 which had MUCH higher install bases than PS5 and Xbox Series.

There would have to be an insane hardware adoption rate (of PS5/X series) for GTA6 sales to match the install base that GTAV had.

btw star citizen fundraising reached $750 millions last month.
It looks to be the better Starfield but the question is will it ever come on. I remember being interested in it years ago but it has become a meme where people make fun of it never coming out at least years ago. I stopped checking on their news since.

Differents times... will totally sell, but at this point can't beat GTAV.

Not to mention story + what you can do in the game will matter.

I wonder how many idiots we'd get rid off on this planet if we stopped stating the bleeding obvious. 👀

Nothing about all of this is good for video games and gamers. TES VI and GTA VI should've been my most anticipated video games in my life, and instead I am terrified of how monetized and soulless both of them will be.

Not a chance for GTA 6 to flop at this stage, even if certain brackets won’t be buying it straight away. On a macro level, this game will be the biggest entertainment product ever made. Look at the first trailer alone and the amount of views it now has. Look at the response and hits online when it was first released, the amount of presence and sheer mind share that one trailer had over people for weeks. And, that was simply one single trailer, a teaser, stinger trailer at that.

If people really think that GTA 6 isn’t going to be a phenomenon in cultural relevance and monetary success, then they’re not thinking logistically.

I hope the budget is actually 2B.

We know by now that you can kinda bruteforce the lack of power of these consoles with enough manpower, money and time.

Rdr2 running on a xone was half a miracle.

The biggest issue surrounding GTA6 is the GAAS-focused audience for GTA5.. How do they plan to approach transitioning them to GTA6's multiplayer mode?

Also in my mind, this will %100 be the 1st AAA game to be sold above $70. Strauss Zelnick has sorta hinted at this multiple times now.

No way this can run on a fucking tablet unless they gimp all the world simulation, physics etc.

They know there’s plenty of folks lined up to buy it. And they’re right, myself included.
What actual adult or teen gamer is not going to day 1 this game?
Eh it won’t flop at all but I don’t know a single person from my age bracket who has the energy or will rush out to buy it day 1 and we bought it on 360 then the One/PS4 remaster and haven’t touched it since.

But I also understand there’s an entire younger generation now ready to buy it. I’ll play the SP at some point down the line maybe even next gen but that’s it.
Confused by this, the not playing ASAP part, not the I only do SP and haven't touched GTA since V it launched on PS360. Regardless of your level of excitement for GTA games, this is still the biggest, most expensive and likely most technologically impressive game to come out in over a decade. Why the fuck would you play anything else when this thing drops?

Than u don't know what gta is
GTA is generational defining game still to this day.
GTA 5 is always in top5 every month.
It will be on ps5 ps6 ps6 pro and maybe ps7.

Yeah, as the years go on and new generations come, the franchise is just going to sell more and more. Everyone I know who's played GTA games growing up is buying it. I just can't see any possible way the game can fail or flop.

Dont think it will outsell 5 at all. 20-30m copies in total i would guess.

It will sell 20 Million in the first few weeks. You can lock that in.

The days of games not being able to run on a particular platform because of specs are over (once Switch 2 drops). If you are saying it won't at 120Hz 4K HDR w/ RTX on I agree however, the production values and actual gameplay are not going to be prohibited by the hardware limitations of a console. Not every publisher will see it this way but it doesn't mean it can't run it.

Agree to disagree, we are gonna see in the future who is right about gta6 on sw2.

You always have a certain baseline that can't be that low depend on what you are trying to achieve, and what gta6 try to achieve is probably well beyond the capability of a tablet (and probably a very underpowered one).

GTA is a cultural phenom at this point.

There's no way this game won't sell at least 40-50m copies in it's first year and that's only because it's limited by it's console-only release. If it were a D1 launch on PC, add another 20-30m onto that. Never been a huge fan of the GTA franchise, think it's hugely over-rated in terms of quality, but you can't deny its popularity. It'll be the biggest single entertainment product launch of all time.

You can already see that with other devs due to release their games in Q3/Q4 of 2025. They're shitting themselves.

Fair enough to wait and see. I will say this if the Take-Two boss says this

"Grand Theft Auto VI is in development for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but how will the game look and perform on the relatively less-powerful Series S? We don't know for sure, but Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick is not losing sleep over it.

During Take-Two's latest earnings call, Zelnick was asked about the Series S being, by design, a lower-spec console compared to Series X and PS5. GTA VI is expected to be a boundary-pushing game technically speaking, prompting concerns by some that it won't be a great experience on the console.

"Look, we support the platforms where the consumers are for as long as they're there, and we find a way to support platforms despite different levels of tech. Our labels are really good at that. I'm not really worried," Zelnick said."

The "real world" gap between the Series S and the Switch 2, from all we know shouldn't be big enough to matter despite the apparent on paper gap. Next Week should go a long way to answer these questions, if the rumors are to be believed.

I mean, i sw2 manage to be slightly less powerful than a series s then the narrative change (still not optimal and i'm still gonna be a salty fuck for releasing the game on these even weaker hardwares, but that's another discussion entirely)

I just don't have much faith in N delivering a staggering hardware for 400\450 dollars in tablet form.
