The Nostromo is for sale

I didn't really want to make a thread for this but where else could I post it? The Propstore is selling the original restored Nostromo from the movie Alien... which to me is the holy grail of film props. I'm sure it will go for 1000s of dollars...

I sent off an email to Dennis Lowe and Jon Sorensen with whom I have been in touch with for over a decade. They helped create the Nostromo and were not happy (respectfully of course) with the restoration of the ship.

Anyway it's news to me.... I would love to have it...

I recall reading that Ridley Scott walked in to see the original unseen Nostromo prop before his lunch-break in post-production. He hated it so much that he tore it to pieces and told the prop builders to have the new one finished immediately. The documentary "The Beast Within" simply says that he "chiseled away" the parts he didn't like. However, that's not what I originally heard. I heard he smashed the original to pieces. You can find that documentary in the Quadrilogy release and / or the Alien Anthology blu-ray release.

Interesting.

I vaguely recall reading that the prop team used Christmas string lights for the ships underbelly navigation/landing lights.

It's an iconic ship and I've always loved the 'unlovely' design. It was a bit of an outlier at a time when other movie/tv sci-fi ships were routinely being portrayed with sleek, clean lines. I think Foss had some input on the design before he was dropped by Scott.

I had the micro machines as a kid. Not my pic but had all these:

Yes, pretty much Christmas lights for the Nostromo's flood lights.

Interior was built based on an actual floor plan. Toy guns and miscellaneous battleship model parts were added to make the body bulk out more.

You should see Dennis tell that story... I get the feeling the blood drained from his face when that happened. He is still creating... this is his doorway... 2015

Absolutely amazing! I'm bookmarking this thread. That link alone is worth it. I thought I had seen some great pre-production material from Alien...now this! Thanks, mate!
When I was talking with Dennis, Jon, and Simon Deering, Dennis used to mail all of docs he made to me and a few others free of charge. Even years after the subject had died down I would get a DVD from Dennis every now and again. Super nice guy and he just wanted to share all his experience making that movie with anyone who would listen.

I've had the privilege to interview film composers, actors, and animators for the past 15-years. With all the 19-odd years I've been researching the Alien franchise; I never thought to interview anyone who worked on it. I would have loved to have written to Dan O'Bannon, Ron Cobb, or Elliot Rosenthal. Many other smaller names, too. I also wanted to know what Roger Corman's reaction was when he found out the script was given to 20th-Century Fox.

Sorry, didn't mean to derail the thread. I made an Alien thread about a month ago. Just have been bad timing when I submitted it. It took only 3-weeks for the thread to defuse. Still there if you want to check it out.

I'll check it out. I met Dennis, Jon, and Simon at an Aliens fan site that was hosting a discussion with them. They latched onto me because I was asking them detailed questions about making movies with practical effects. Something I like to do myself. It spun off into like a year long email conversation. Jon even asked me to help him film one of his projects. I turned him down literally explaining I was not worthy...lol. Jon and Dennis were email buddies for years after that but after Dennis completed Alien Makers the emails died down. I haven't spoken with them in a long while now.

This thread has no direction it can not be derailed.

I gather he probably took some treasures with him after production was finished on Alien. I know there was a lot left behind in Shepperton and Bray Studios. I think Shepperton had a bunch of the props stored up in a warehouse until the 1990's...probably tossed it in the trash 😢

I never actually asked them if they kept anything. I should have! I know there was a big fuss when the propstore acquired the Nostromo and began restoration they made no mention of Dennis, Jon, or Simon. And the propstore made no effort to contact them to help or get any suggestions. They were very proper about the whole thing but you could tell they were hurt. Anytime it (The Nostromo) pops up in the news I always send them an email.

That's the way people are now. They'd do the same to Cobb's work. Probably sell it under Ridley Scott's name, seeing as many refer to it only as his film (it was a big group effort and it didn't start with Scott).

Prepare to be disappointed with it as an actual model, they rarely stand up to close scrutiny, the cameras hide just how crude film prop models can be.
