The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

You know, you'd THINK there'd be an obvious way to spoiler tag stuff, or at least handy instructions...

So, for people who never spoiler tag stuff, how do you spoiler tag stuff?

:D

Question about the Head of State questline:
Do you have to escort Hannibal and the others all the way to the Lincoln Memorial or can they get there safely by themselves?
They get there fine, just fast travel and then wait for like 24 hours.

Danke, Saya.

So, in the
tricycle factory
, I killed
the Scientist and the green nuclear zombie with him (who also had a name)
. Are these random characters, or were they part of some quest I never accepted? It just seems weird that they actually had names, so I thought they might be story elements...

Just finished the Nukacola Challenge yesterday which was the last side quest I had to complete. Doing all of the side quests basically doubles the length of the game.

So are their more than 30 in the game because I used some for health before I knew about the quest I have 6 now!

There are a lot more than thirty. Even if you accidentally got rid of some before the quest there are still more than enough out there.

Probably been answered but this thread is getting very big...

If Dogmeat dies, does he repop at vault 101 or is he gone for good?? right now,if he dies I reload a previous save...

:lol Funniest thing ever

I was in the subway under Dupoint Circle and low on health, so I activated a Protectron to help clean out the tunnels. When two Super Mutants saw it, they actually laughed and said HAHA SILLY ROBOT! WALK LIKE MR. POTATO HEAD!

The Protectron asked for their tickets, and one of them replied SURE HERE'S MY TICKET, and blew its head off with a shotgun while the other giggled like a hyena.

:lol

If he dies, he's gone forever unless you use a save. That goes for every character in the game that can die, which is the vast majority of them (NPCs critical to the main story just go unconscious, but I've only come across two of those, one being Amata at the start in Vault 101). But if you accidentally leave him somewhere using the "stay" command and you forget to pick him back up, he'll eventually go back to Vault 101 on his own. Or should, at least.

Question to those who are past GNR:

I just found the
Vault-Tec
Headquarters, entered the mainframe computer room and it (awesomely) marked the locations of the other
vaults
in the game on my map. I'm just wondering if I can safely visit them without screwing up the main quest if I haven't done the Rivet City stuff yet.

As far as I know, the only
vault that's critical to the main quest is 87, where you find the G.E.C.K. Other than that you should be fine.

Noticed a post below, apparently
Vault 112 is vital as well.

I haven't read about her getting lost. She sets up shop in the 9th Circle, that is where she was in my game.

You CAN escort them if you wish, it's not a given quest and you don't get any reward for doing so, and you are also likely to get them all killed.

When I originally couldn't find them at the memorial, I thought I had done something wrong, so reloaded and then followed them. Not a mile up the road from their headquaters were Enclave soldiers who proceeded to fire on me and the group. The fact that there were junked out cars between us didn't help since they ended up exploding in all the gunfire.

Even if you could make it past that, there will probably be more random encounters you'd have to fight through. I think it would be badass to attempt to escort them all the way there, but they seem to arrive safely on their own if you just fast travel. They are kinda hopeless in battle if you are watching them.

The above answer is incorrect. There are
two vaults
that figure prominently into the main story.
Vault 112 and Vault 87

my dogmeat died in about twenty minutes. i think he's fairly useless, unless you want to start getting sentimental about how neat it is to have a dog in the game. as a partner, the other npcs seem much more useful.

then again, they have opposable thumbs and can therefore hold guns. so, i guess that makes some sense.

The only thing i've found dogmeat is good for is pulling aggro and killing annoying little things like radroaches. For whatever reason I am compelled to make sure that damn dog stays alive. It hasn't been easy.

Holy crap is this game long! I've just been wandering around killing stuff while trying to head in the general direction of a couple of actual missions. I rarely ever get to complete a quest, but find it very rewarding to just wander, find new places and collect stuff.

My beef with the game is that it seems a bunch of the train stations I've discovered don't automatically appear on the map, making it difficult to get back there after fast-travelling. Is this a bug in the PC version or is there something special one needs to do to make a new location appear as a map point?

BTW, I'm at level 10 now and after picking up the finesse perk, I don't notice any difference in the amount of critical hits I get.

So what's a good build to go with? I am putting points in charisma, intelligence, endurance, and perception, oh and also luck. Going speech heavy, and big weapons for combat. Any pointers?

Charisma, intelligence, and endurence should be your primary ones. Then luck should be kept decent. The rest shouldn't matter that much to you.

im playing on pc and i dont have that problem (which would be a bitch cause some of those stations get confusing).

i have a different bug though. i buy a theme for my house form moira and tell her to change the theme and she takes it from my inventory... but my house is still the shack it was the day i got it. ive tried 3 different themes trying to get it to work. i coded the money for the second and third themes, i wanted to experiment... but i cannot get any themes to show in my house.

oh, i also cannot install the patch. i downloaded it manually and when i try and execute the update it launches the game and the update stops responding. i submitted a support question to bethsoft and they wanted my dxdiag, so maybe theyll tell me how to patch.

uh... wtf.

So I want to have lydia in her shop at tenpenny tower so I can buy stuff from her. She's the only person that sells something. But she wandered around outside and is staring at a corner of the wall which she now NEVER leaves. I've waited days. i've tried pushing her out of the corner back towards the door and she walks right back to the corner.

It seems the game has completely fucked me out of buying
upgrades for my tenpenny suite

Just got my copy and need some help making a build.

I want to go small arms and go for lots of headshots. Any suggestions? Also what perks should I be getting.

possibly? I rob everyone. Its never caused a problem before in NPC behavior though. Why would robbing her cause her to stare at a wall?

I wouldn't go for Big Guns exclusively if it's your first time through, they're hard to come by and to maintain (expensive and kinda rare in the beginning, making them a real pain to repair). Put some extra points in either melee or unarmed to compensate. And have a high repair skill.

And you won't really need to use VATS with big guns since you'll save more ammo by controlling your bursts, i.e. you can do without Agility.

Oh and don't put to many points in Big Guns from leveling, there's this perk called Size Matters that'll give you 15 points up to three times, starting at level 6 or 9 I think.

I would go with high Agility (Small arms and AP bonus), Intelligence (for the extra skill points ever lvl) and Luck (higher chance of criticals). Take points out of Charisma to bump those skills up. When you lvl up add points to Small Arms - you will also need to bump up speach and barter because the low Charisma screws those abilities.

For perks you are going to want to take ones like Educated (lvl4), Bloody Mess (lvl6), Gunslinger (lvl6), Commando (lvl8), Finesse (lvl10), Sniper (lvl12), etc... Basically anything that improves you chance to hit, get a critical or overal damage.

Thanks. What about jobs. I think I want repair, but what else should i be looking at?

If you want to fast travel back to a train station that you've been to underground, you'll have to exit the station, let the game mark that you've "discovered" it, then go back underground. Whenever I get to a new station, I always exit real quick and then go back under.

Also, I have the finesse perk and I'm getting criticals on just about every other shot. I guess it helps that my small arms is very high. ;)

Speech (very good first time through, will let you persuade NPC's), Science (hacking), Lockpick and Repair (saves a lot of money and frustration).

Science and lockpick are interchangeable a lot of the time, often a lock will give you both options to open it (mostly with safes and doors). Lockpicks will help you open ammo crates and such while Science will let you deactivate turrets. Or you can just go with both and get massive exp (by for example, hacking a computer connected to a door but use lockpicks to actually open it, double the exp), make sure you get at least one of them to 100 though.

Gun Nut as a perk is great, as it adds to both your small arms and repair skill and can be taken multiple times.

The_Inquisitor said:

Repair (nice to have since you will come across a lot of almost broken crap. combining two armors or guns when you are trying to manage your weight is a big plus), Science (hacking computer terminals) and Lock Pick are also nice to have. Everything else is personal choice. After playing for a few hours I have decided to bump up Explosives simply because it is fun as hell to blow people up with mines and frags.

Man, this game is way bigger than I thought it would be. I'm taking my sweet time and I've been playing this almost all week now (had the week off, about 75 hours on the gameclock now). I decided to finish the main quest today (have to get back to work tomorrow), but I am nowhere near done. I did most sidequests already, but about 30% of the map hasn't even been uncovered yet (the northern part) so I figure I have at least a few dozen hours to go before really having seen it all.

If there's another game that can claim the GOTY title then I'd be very surprised. Then again I haven't started Mother 3 yet.

Anyone here go unarmed? Whats it like? Also, Is the perks Mysterious Stranger and Nerd Rage worth taking?

I got Mysterious Stranger. He comes around maybe every 15 or so VATS segment. Not sure what will happen if your Luck is higher. I usually kill an enemy in VATS also so he won't appear as he just finishes them off.

:lol

In addition to the crashed UFO, there's a random encounter where a meteor shoots overhead & explodes, showering the area with alien power cells and a unique version of the Alien Blaster. Having Dogmeat helps here if you have troubles finding the gun; you can send him to look for it.

I completed the quest Those! the other day, and i can safely say
that scientist is a lucky, lucky man that I actually thought what he was doing was worthwhile, or else I would have dusted him. I still popped him once in the face before heading off to do what he wanted.

Damn this game is so fucking awesome, has absorbed all my gaming time so far. Me my first (mild Galaxy Radio spoiler)
Behemoth
today, and that fight was pretty hard but really cool.
