The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

You need to chill. People new to fallout (like myself) just didn't know how the game is played. Hell, based off of the screens it looks like a shooter...so it's not a bad assumption to think it's one at first. Jesus Christ.

You should probably just read previews first rather than glancing at screens. If this were the case for all games, then people would jump into the Fable II topic thinking it was a hack and slash action game, or Valkyria Chronicles thinking it was just some third person anime styled shooter.

I actually played the game last night, and I loved it. People, this is NOT a shooter like a a poster above me said! This is a RPG with stats and everything. I was kind of scared by some of the impressions before but when I played it I was blown away and got me even more excited for the game.

But this is a person that truly LOVED Oblivion, and the game does feel like it at times. Also, from what I played this game is challenging. I played close to an hour and I died like 5-6 times!

Nice I loved Oblivion too, so I am sure I will enjoyed this game :D

thought some people might get a kick out of how much of a wuss I am;

Oblivion - 80hrs13 playtime, 1011 saves = save every 4.7 minutes

2972208160_971f1c8bcb.jpg

Fallout 3 - 41hrs28 playtime, 1675 saves = save every 1.4 minutes

and here is my favourite glitch (warning: VERY tame spoiler, possibly - this is my current partner who wanders the wasteland with me)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3295/2972207254_c8023c8596.jpg

and to counter the guy who said it is hard, I played it on default difficulty (didnt even see how you would go about changing it) and I only died twice in the game, both times due to walking on land mines in out of combat situations.

I saw on gog.com that they have Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 for 6 dollars each WITHOUT DRM. I know i'm asking a stupid question, but should I buy them? Fallout 3 interests me, but I would prefer to play some of the back story first.

To those saying that the gunplay is shit or at least rather poor, making you rely on VATS...
Do you think this is just a symptom of poor control/analog tweaking? ....I mean, I remeber shooting/aiming in Oblivion was marginal on 360 and flat out garbage on PS3

I'm wonderin how the PC crowd (myself included) are going receive the combat with proper mouselook available

Umm yeah I had no trouble shooting/aiming in Oblivion.

$12 for two of the best RPGs in gaming history? Hells yes.

Need to wait for reviews on this but from painey's impressions, it seems like it has the exact same flaw that almost ruined Oblivion for me; the empty and life-less world.

An empty and life-less world after the apocalypse, Hmm...

Well, Oblivion did it in a bad way. I hope it is meant to be like that this time around.

I'm not that far yet (reviewing the game, PS3 version) but I do feel the world to be empty and lifeless, in a non-meant way then.

Only reason why it was hard (i guess) for me was because I was playing my friends save and I think he wandered off and the enemies there was hard.

Impressions please :D

Well, to be honest, to me this totally is Oblivion with guns. It just breaths Oblivion in another setting, I can't help it.

I'm not a fan of Oblivion and I think Fallout 3 has the same flaws as it. The world just isn't that convincing, it doesn't feel alive (a bit ironic after a nuclear war, but you get what I'm saying :lol). At times the combat just feels somewhat clunky, when you're evading attackers and just run backwards while smashing the attack button.

The VATS is quite cool, I like it more than initially after a press event. It kind of changes your way of approaching combat. I try to get as close as possible without getting hit and then use VATS to go for the headshots, with rather gory and satisfactory results!

Everybody who liked Oblivion, will love this one. I like it a bit more than Oblivion and didn't really play enough. But sometimes the game just feels 'old'.

Really have to play more to get better impressions. At times I totally fall in love with the game, at times I get really bored. Could still turn out to be totally great, so I'm going to continue now!

as big as it is, it is massively empty and disappointing

Really? Every single review/preview I've seen has said it has a TON of content.

That impression has made me said, it sounds worse than Oblivion(even though I liked it). :(

Is the opposite also true?
Well, not totally... I didn't really like Oblivion, but I like Fallout 3 more. But yeah, Oblivion has the same general design, so if there are particular things in Oblivion that you didn't like, chances are that they're in Fallout 3 as well. Depends on what exactly. I found the beginning of Fallout 3 way more engrossing than Oblivion for example.

But I really have to play more, just don't see my impressions as a conclusion, just as first thoughts.

Is real-time shooting difficult or frantic? Were you relying too much on VATS?

Oblivion's flaw to me was that it was just really boring. But I only made it past the first quest or something.

Thanks for telling me that. Sorry for not having time to read every preview out there.

I feel like I'm being punished for playing the game as a good character. So far, it seems like the positives for playing through evil gives you better rewards. I would probably have triple the amount of caps right now if I played through evil. Example(kinda spoilerish)
If you save Megaton you get like 100 caps and a shack to call your own, but if you blow it up you get around 1,000 caps and a penthouse in Tenpenny Tower...

but you get the gratification that you did the right thing, and that warm fuzzy feeling...

And I'm sure these early decisions will have some influence on the ending...

I think there's supposed to be like 200 ending variations or something.

Yeah I know, but then I was like fuck I don't have enough money for items. So then I found a trader out in the wasteland, killed him and his mutated mule thing and took all of their items and caps. But now that I have a solid loadout of weapons I shouldn't have to do that again. :lol I think you only get 25 or so evil karma for murder.

Played the game for a good 9 hours now and have the idea that I just barely got started.

I'm having some difficulties with having enough ammo and health packs. Keep getting slaughtered, so have to do some more buying. What I don't really like is that there isn't a lot of ammo spread out in places where there should be, like raider hideouts. You spend more ammo on them than you get back, so you just run out of it, and you don't encounter traders everywhere, so it's kind of risky. But it's also fun to use other tactis. I used grenades and mines really effectively at some point.

If you are low on ammo head to the super duper mart, the raiders there go down quick and all of them carry good amounts of ammo for small arms/rifles. I just pick my battles strategically, and sneak or use cover-so I really haven't come close to running out of ammo or dying for that matter. Grenades are fun though, I snuck up on two raiders behind a busted down wall, and tossed a grenade in. Within seconds, limbs and heads were flying through the air.

How is walking through downtown DC? Are there snipers holed up in the burned out buildings? Are there really trenches? Is it tough to survive there? I think one video/preview said downtown is a deathtrap for low level players.
