The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Yeah, I'm pretty much done with this game. Done nearly all the quests, been to all the interesting locations (<3 explorer perk at lvl 20), caps, health and enemies stopped being a problem quite a bit of time ago... Yeah, I think I'm done.

I'll shelf this baby for a while and replay it in a completely different way when my recollection isn't quite as vivid anymore - same what I did with Oblivion. :)

Oh yes!
Maybe an early sign of influence from the obelisk in the basement? Everyone who stayed in that place did go mad after a while.

That happened to my Clover. :(

and Dogmeat. :(

and Charon, once. :(

I loaded an older save every time. I just can't stop myself jumping over obstacles while traversing the wasteland.

Okay so...I'm kinda struggling in this game. Basically I hated Oblivion and I'm not really gelling well with this one either. I'm at Megaton, doing side-quests. Got myself an alien blaster, but I have virtually no caps and my other guns are in need of repairs (guess what, no money to repair them) and yeah....

I hate this game.
Keep wandering around, you may run across some loot. Basically what you are saying is that if this was real, you would be one those skeletons lying beside the rubble? :D

You gotta love fallout3, so fallout3 can love you back. ~:)

I've been pondering the weapons and how they work, systems-wise.

There seems to be more going on than just the DMG number. I also seem to get criticals more often with certain weapons. The oh so lovely Railway Rifle, for example, lists damage in the high twenties, a good ten points lower than the Combat Shotgun. And yet the Railway Rifle brings down almost everything I see in two shots, with one of the two usually being a critical. It's become my go-to weapon though the stats don't explain why. The same goes with that Dart Gun. It rocks the leg criticals on a very regular basis but the other body parts, not so much.

Anyone got any insight?

Oh, I also finished my list of junk components worth collecting and the weapons they make. Helpful in separating the good junk and the junk junk.

So I finally beat this the other night. I was ok with the ending, but I guess because i'd read so many disappointing posts over it. I was more pissed at
losing my follower when the Enclave ambushed me at the end of vault 87, along with all their possessions. I even tried making them wait at the GECK chamber, but when I came back they were gone.

At least the giant robot never got stuck for me. :D

Still my GOTY, the summary at the end was neat, can't wait to see the different outcomes when I play through it again. Truly a masterpiece, I was compelled to keep playing even with games like Gears of War 2, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead sitting on the shelf. Congratulations to Bethesda for reminding me why I love WRPG.

So I'm about to start playing. Can anyone give me some general tips, like on battles or what items to save and use.

Also where is that early sniper rifle?

Depends on what you put into your "special" stats and if you want to be evil or good. The sniper rifle is located in Minefield. If you go to Megaton and talk to moira she gives you the quest for the wasteland survival guide and one of the first quests is to go up there.

In Megaton go see Moira in the general store, start the Wasteland Survival Quest and do the Minefield sub-quest first. Once you get to Minefield, head right on up to the concrete shell of a building (take care avoiding the many mines en-route) and take out the guy sniping at you from up there (there is a stairwell up to him towards the back of the rubble). He's got a sniper rifle.

Are certain special stats, or stats in general, better than others? And I usually play good

Also I thought there was one in a hollowed out rock in Megaton. I remember seeing it in a vid on GT

The sniper rifle is right outside Megaton. I forget the exact position, but walking around the right side of the city there's a hollowed out rock.

Fine if you dont mind the jaggies and slightly decreased draw distance, from what i hear.

Fuckkk, 40 hours into the game and I realized I screwed up my shot at the xaunlong assault rifle. Damn computer terminal shut me out.

I guess I'll have to try and get it in my 2nd playthrough.

Anyone know where to get the Wanda assault rifle?

What do you have to do to get it?

I'll check again tonight, but I went to the first terminal again and it has an ERROR message at the bottom where you are supposed to do the quest.

I believe it is a one shot deal.

Bummer. Sorry! TBH, the strat guide has been a bit misleading about a couple of things.

Well it just depends on how you plan on going through the game. I used alot of VATS and small weapons so I put a lot into agility and perception. If you want to melee, you should put more into strength, etc. You can also use the extreme conditioning perk to tweak it a bit. If you totally messed up though its better to start over than suffer through a whole game with a build that's not working with your play style.

I feel like I'm missing something basic, but how do I fully heal my follower Charon?
When I look at him in VATS, the middle bar is like 1/3 flashing, and so is 1/3 of the AP bar on the right side.
This is not in combat, and I'm well rested.
What am I supposed to do?

thats only showing the damage you would do if you attacked, their health is not low.

I'm dying to get back to this game. Finished the main quest then had to give it a break to work on the other stuff I had unfinished. It's been calling to me every day. Such a great game.

how? :(

I don't think there was an explanation in the game on doing this...

The game tells you how to do it really early on. If you mash buttons you'll skip it. Open your inventory, go to the item you want to repair, hit Y (on 360 pad - the inventory screen will actually have an option saying 'Repair' with which key to press next to it in the top right). It'll then go to the repair screen where you choose which other bit of the same kit to repair it with. You need to have multiple versions of the same thing to repair with, unique items (weapons & armor) can be repaired with non-unique ones of the same type mostly; but not always. The better your repair skill, the more effective you are at repairing up to higher condition percentages.

Yeah I probably skipped that one, thanks.

So what is a good way to grind some money/exp? I feel really naked with no caps. Can't afford any decorations for my Megaton house :(

I found caps quite hard to come by early on too - I cleared out a few places then traded the loot I'd gained - alternate between Moira in Megaton and Flak & Shrapnel's in Rivet City to give each merchant a chance to restock on caps. If you have a decent science skill you can head over to Tenpenny Tower and wait for the two shopkeepers to leave their stores, then when no-one's looking hack their wall safes, although this is a one-time deal and inadvertently has something to do with a sidequest, this nets you 500 caps total; or head up to Paradise Falls and take the 'Strictly Business' mission from the lookout on duty - each er.. 'objective' nets you 250 caps and you can repair the negative Karma later; or start the Nuka Cola challenge sidequest in Girdershade.

Edit: Don't worry about XP - the game requires almost no grinding, if anything you'll level up and hit the level cap at lv.20 in what feels like no time at all.

With speech and repair jacked up, you can get around 1000 caps really easily by convincing Simms to pay you more for the defusing, as well as fixing the leaky pipes.

Kill, scavenge, repair, sell. In that order.

Is there any real benefits to having a Railway Rifle, seems like it took me forever to find parts and when I built it the damage was in the 20s.

xabre said:
Do item effects stack? So if I take a jet which is +60ap IIRC, and then another one, is that +120ap?
Nope, only effects from different items stack.

The Railway Rifle cripples limbs on nearly every enemy with one, max two shots. Very useful. (especially in combination with the Dart Gun)

hey guys how do you hack terminals and pick locks ?

another question!

After killing all the ghouls I went to Tennpenny tower, and kill the living shit out of OLD WRINKLY ASSED Tennpenny is that okay or did I needed him later on ? btw after giving 300 caps to that guy in Megaton .. Minory or forgot his name, can I blow up his head for being an asshole ?

My new character causes the game to lock up whenever I head for Tenpenny Tower. :(

I've tried it three times so I know it's not just random. My other character can go there fine.

...to hell with Little Lamplight!

Those kids are little assholes- and I can't even make them pay for their blatant disrespect for a mung... I mean an elder!

One funny thing I noticed:
since the children are immortal in this game, I noticed one fell into the water in that one area with all the overhanging bridges. The little jerk is just swimming in place just under the surface of the water.
Enjoy your eternal underwater purgatory, you little bastard! :lol

Firstly -- you about the small guns/big guns/energy weapons differences, yeah? So depending on your skills, you would do better with certain weapon classes. As for the rifle/versus shotgun question: it's a range thing, at least in my experience. The combat shotgun is as good at critting and one-shot killing as the rifle is. But one is better at short range (shotgun), the other at long range (the rifle).

And as for the Dart Gun -- it's designed to crit the legs, check its stats. It's meant to cripple the limbs.

hey guys I probably am a noob at RPGs but I accidently hit the RB and it lets you select individual body part, that was pretty awesome, I
took out all the Raiders in the Super Dooper Shopping Mart.

can someone explain that and how to hack the terminals...

Thanks

I assure you it's not that different from the 360 version at all.

There are framerate hitches and stutters sometimese but that happened with Oblivion also.

Got Charon pretty early, I'm only @ level 4 currently.
It all happened because I decided to get the hell out of Megaton without bothering with the nuke, either way, and simply stumbled onto Georgetown/DC and pretty much ran for my life the whole way through though the Feral Ghouls weren't so bad; the packs of Super Mutants and Centaurs freaked me out though. Eventually I found Lincoln Memorial, which led me to the Museum aka "Ghoul City" and after tracking down some Abe Lincoln artifacts for the slave traders back at the Memorial (this was a creepy quest--I do not appreciate the stronger Feral Ghouls at all), and then killing every single last one of them only after collecting my cash for said artifacts (who can let an entire clan of slave traders live??), I headed back to Ghoul City, completely encumbered so it was a verrrry slow trek back, to sell all my new loot and lo and behold, there's Greta smoking a cig outside the front entrance. I casually blew her head off with the sniper rifle I was given by that bigoted Ghoul Crowley, who wants me to off some humans he considers bigots himself. Azrakahl hands me the contract for Charon, Charon then thanks his former owner in very definitive terms.

Amazing, amazing stuff. It all seemed so free-form, especially the beginning of my journey, exploring random subways and malls, not knowing where the hell I was heading, being completely terrified of the Super Mutants, hell, of everything really. At one point running into an abandoned house in Georgetown only to activate a "Mr. Handy" and sick him on one of the Super Mutants outside (flamethrower action!). Alas, Mr. Handy was taken down by a mini-gun but he afforded me precious seconds to keep on running for my life.

And those damn slave traders at the Lincoln Memorial!! Man did they piss me off. I casually planted mines around their trenches before I knew I was gonna kill one of their peeps right by the Lincoln statue and I also laid a perimeter of mines by that particular entrance as well so once some would come running, they'd be blown right the fuck up. Epic battle nonetheless.

Oh yeah, I also took down a couple of the Brotherhood Of Steel guys on my first visit to the Museum, because their armor looked so dope and they seemed like Black Water mercenary types, so fuck 'em.

2) Get your science up to hack terminals.

So it appears that you have one shot at getting the Energy Weapons bobblehead. I guess I screwed myself out of it, since I
headed straight for President Eden, instead of battling every damn Enclave soldier in Raven Rock, until I managed to get to the Captain's office.

Doesn't seem very fair to me.

I didn't need it. Was sort of annoyed because my skill was at 100. :( But it was the first and only one I found :P

I think Fallout 3 is the first game in a long time, where even after completion, I'd hop into the thread to read it. I will probably replay this :D
