The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

I plan on being an evil son of a bitch. With class.

I'm going about this a bit differently. I have a bespectacled nerd character. I tried to create Captain Dale Dye, but I sort of failed. So the psychology behind my character now is this: He's wearing a lab coat and glasses, he has white hair, and he's a dweeb that does not fit in anywhere in the Wasteland...and he knows it. So the way he tries to fit in is with shocking outbursts of clumsy violence that alienates everyone and even frightens the monsters.

Remember that scene in Shaft (2000) where a totally out of his element Christian Bale beats the crap out of that big guy in the holding cell? Kind of like that, but just imagine that he was some cubicle jockey programmer that finally loses his shit one day and goes on a reckless power-trip fueled by delusions of persecution and martyrdom.

I've been pretty much using VATS exclusively. The real time aiming is a little too fast for me, and I can't seem to hit anything...and you can never actually tell when you hit anything if not for the health meter.

I shot a roach and the game told me I hit it in the leg. A small peeve though, I wish there was a toggle for the aiming cursor. I only want to see it in combat. Still, just got out of the vault and so far the game is full fledge Fallout in most every respect, Interior graphics are great and I loved the way hacking is done.

Are you able to attack any NPC?

Repair is very useful from start to finish. It'll make you money, and increase your damage. You'll want to pick locks as well. I didn't personally find explosives to be worth putting a huge amount of points into.
Thanks, I'll go with either repair or lockpick. Does the stat outlay look all right?

You see, nukes and pistols have a complete lack of subtlety, so I'm showing my class by strapping on a power glove and fisting the north star out of everyone.

I've been checking your survival guide (nice write-up). Are Commando and Gunslinger the only perks that affect VATS?

I want to maximize VATS as much as possible, either by extending the limit and/or increasing the recharge rate.

You have enough points to do both with ease. I wrote a spoiler-free guide with this sort of info in it, if you want more basic advice. I'd go with slightly higher intelligence at first. The bonus skill points per level are huge. Other stats you can raise later with Intense Training, but you can't go back and get those skill points for leveling retroactively.

A few bugs and slighty less graphic quality stops you from buying a game? Ok...
Um, no, but it forces me to buy it for that other console. You know the one with the built-in jet engine that keeps the neighborhood dogs up all night, barking & howling at the moon.

Oh well.

Cool, I'll give that a try. Thanks for the guide, too - that's been very useful so far.

Combat is really hard. I find that I basically can't take on a super mutant yet...well, almost got one down but then his buddy showed up and I had to retreat...and I'm always out of ammo.

I don't think perk discussion is really spoiler-worthy, but I'll tag it anyways:

Finesse, a level 10 perk gives you a nice bonus to crit chance, but that affects you in and out of VATS combat.

Mysterious Stranger at level 10 is probably my favorite perk, and totally recommended.

Sniper at level 12 gives you a big boost to head shot percentage.

Action Boy/Girl will get you more Action points for VATS at level 16, but that's closer to when you may be finishing the game.

I'm all about Mysterious Stranger. 1UP's description of the Fallout 3 version sounded intruiging, and I loved that perk back in Fallout 1 + 2. Can't wait to see it play out all cinematically this time around. That comes up only during VATS, right?

It seems like that last one you mentioned is what I was mainly thinking about. Kinda sucks you get it so late. There's no new game +, is there?

Thank God too. The level scaling destroyed Oblivion.

Wait until you get into the heart of D.C. That place is a warzone.

Roommate got Fallout 3 on his PS3, he's at the toddler infant stage and the framerate is jittery as FUCK. Is there some sort of vsync disable option?

Yeah, it only works in VATS, but if you crank up the difficulty, it'll come in VERY handy. While you get that other perk pretty late, you have plenty of opportunity to explore without completing the main quest, so you'll have time to enjoy all the high-end perks.

I actually kind of like it. It's forcing me to take my time, be creative with weaponry, and do sidequests. I can't just power through to the main story bits.

VERY glad I went with the PC version. My new MacBook Pro suddenly feels like it was worth the extra grand, in case any other MBP owners are on the fence.

Oh, but the audio is kinda jacked sometimes..

Sounds good. Thanks for the answers.

I'm especially glad that Bethesda decided to keep the whole "kill NPCs" feature, since that was always one of the greatest things about Fallout. I wonder how many quests someone can completely miss just by having killed certain NPCs or triggered certain events.

It's funny, pretty much every quest has multiple ways to approach it. You can usually get pretty far with speech, or by performing some task, or you can just come in guns blazing, kill the quest NPC, take the key or item, and be on your way. There's so many different ways to go about things, you'll probably end up saving and reloading often just to see all the different ways you could handle things.

Bethsoft's community manager Gstaff (also a GAF member) posted a response concerning the PS3 issues over at the official forums.

Hey all

We are actively collecting data from these forums. If/when we have updates for the game, we’ll notify you guys. If you’re running into issues while playing the game, please be as specific as you can in how the issue came up, how often it happens, and so on. That’ll help our team out.

Thanks!

I really hope they decide to release a patch this time. Oblivion never got patched AFAIK.

I picked up the collectors pc edition and strategy guide. Both are pretty awesome. The guide is gigantic and hard-cover. The making of doc is 40 minutes and the art book is really nice. Bobble head seems well-made.

Good to hear that the Pro can hold its own against it. Anyone try it on the new MacBook?

Speech is definitely something I'm going to build up. Are you still able to, if your speech is high enough, literally tell the quest NPC that you completed his quest even though you didn't and he'll buy your bullshit and reward you?

What I really like about it so far is that the game forces you to take your time, explore, and do side stuff. If you rush out into certain zones early on, you get your ass handed to you. Im basically going around and finding items to sell to be able to buy some decent weapons.

Yeah, that's very often an option. :)

Very high speech isn't even necessary, if you don't mind saving/reloading and making multiple attempts with mediocre speech.

If I have a bunch of weapons that's going over my weight limit, can I drop them off in a room in Megaton and be able to come back and pick them up when I want to use them later? I need a locker or something to deposit my stuff...or up my strength.

new or old? The old ones have a GMA 950 or an X3100, basically top out on Quake 3, so I doubt Fallout 3 would run on it.

The new alu ones on the other hand...

Argh! Fallout 3 isn't released here tomorrow, it's Friday! Why is held back here even when stores have them in-stock? I know it's only 1 more day but to me that means I can't play until Sunday night now. Lame.

basically. i can see any game becoming incredibly tedious if you take that approach. why... who needs to level up VATS? just save it before each move and keep reloading until your move works out like you asked!

Is anyone else having framerate issues with the PS3 version? It moves kinda like a slideshow (brings back Deus Ex 2 memories) and it's really irritating.

my steam download went to 100% ready, and then when i started the game it went to a "Updating Fallout 3" screen and now its telling me approx. 8 hours until its done?

WTF

Where
the water treatment plant where you use the key leo gave you? It's not the same thing as the water processing plant where he is, right?

Also, are you better off disarming the bomb or blowing the town up? I'm trying to be "good" so I suppose I'd better disarm it.
