The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Yeah when I was in the Museum of Technology frigging dogmeat was getting f'ed up by the super mutants and used up nearly all of my stimpaks. Once I get Jericho, Dogmeat is DEAD.

I'm playing on medium in my first playthrough, so maybe that's why, but I've found that Dogmeat is surprisingly robust. I've only had to use one stimpak on him and he fights with me all the time.

As far as Jericho, well, he's just a beast. I have him as long-range instead of melee so he rarely gets too hurt, and he just fucks people up. And it looks like his health just recharges automatically on its own at some point.

Good to know. I'm delaying my arrival to Rivet City as much as possible. :lol

Though I really do want to get there before even finishing with Megaton so that I can pick up the
Rock-It Launcher
sooner rather than later.

Btw, there's no
robot guard
in the Rivet City armory, is there? Because there was one in the Megaton armory (which I entered after defusing the bomb in a previous save that got screwed up), and a Stealth Boy wasn't too effective on him for very long. He ended up spotting me anyway.
There is a big robotic turret inside the armory, but it didn't spot me with my stealthboy on. There is also a robot guarding the armory outside of it's door. But it didn't hassle me when I went to open the door up.

And like I said, I just closed the door behind me after I stepped into the armory so I didn't attract any attention when I shot up the turret.

Also, Moira will send you to Rivet City for a mission for her book if you are interested in killing two birds with one stone.

Virtually everything. :lol

Literally, I think, if I understand it correctly. All of those junk parts you pick up, etc.

I've been storing away stuff like lawnmower blades and pool balls specifically for it.
Yeah, pretty much anything in your 'Misc' section can be used as ammo; teddy bears, toy cars, old books, scrap metal, fusion batteries, plates, chessboards, etc. When you take it out and press fire, a screen will pop up like a trader screen, and then you can fill it with as many items as you want; press ok, and then let loose.

Yeah I mean dogmeat is pretty tough, but in the museum there were about 2 Super mutants hitting him with hunting rifles while another had an assault rifle shooting at him. Situations like that are arising more and more and it's becoming a chore to keep him alive.

Have you found there's anything that's particularly damaging to the enemy? Or is it basically a case of the bigger the weight, the greater the damage?

That's why it's great to also have Jericho with you, since you can just let Dogmeat hang back out of tough fights and still have some fun help.

I've only had Dogmeat sit out of a fight once, when I was up against raiders with rocket launchers, and after Jericho and I wiped them out we just went back to Dogmeat and continued on. I've grown quite attached to those two. :lol

The equivalent to Jericho if you have good karma is Sentinel Lyons of the Brotherhood I believe. She is in the Citadel. But you cant get to her until the Picking up the Trail main quest mission.

When you load it up, it'll list the damage potential of each item. But I haven't really been paying attention what does the most damage.

Like I said earlier, I have just been using it to shoot pre-war money at enemies since I have collected a ton of it. :D

She seemed really stale to me, but then I got
Fawkes--my goodness is finally rewarded!
Edit: wait, its not
Lyons
, is it? I had some other chick...

Yeah, I really wanted to use him. But if he only joins you if you're good, then I'm outta luck. Waaaay out of luck. :lol

So awesome.

There's a ton of stuff you can pick up that has no real value in caps, either. So much ammo potential.

When your in the vault looking for the G.E.C.K., you'll run into him in one of the holding cells, he's a friendly super mutant. I helped him out, was generally polite to him and such, and then he got me the G.E.C.K. and we parted, and the scripted kidnapping occurs and you go to the Enclave base. There I convinced the President to destroy the Enclave, and when I finally escaped the base he was outside shooting shit up and he wanted to join me, so I let the big guy tag along! :D
Zeliard, I'm not sure if you have to be good overall or just good to him.

Do you know if he'll still join you if you're bad overall but still nice to him?

Edit: hmm, guess I'll find out.

Got damnit thats too far in the story for me...hmmm any earlier companion? If it not Lyons where is this chick you speak of?

I haven't bothered to make note of it. However, I find that anything with a really high weight:value ratio is what I tend to shoot first, haha...

My brotherhood chick was some older looking black lady that I picked up before heading to the
GECK
vault, but then I lost her once the scripted Enclave thing occured (though I did see her back at the Citadel later, haven't talked with her yet)--after that I picked up Fawkes though so I don't need her.
Edit: How'd you end up with Lyons?! She's been a total hardass to me. :lol
Edit 2: She was at the Citadel, talk with her and she'll mention stuff about your dad and then she'll offer.

Just did the Big trouble in big town quest. That was pretty awesome, and ended up getting some good stuff out of it.
the part at the end where you can train them to defend the town from super mutants was cool. I nearly pissed my pants when Bittercup got her head smashed off with a sledgehammer.

So, small guns skill points would include all the rifles as well? Assault, Sniper, Hunting, etc.?

I'm debating at this point which I want to prioritize--energy, big, or small. I'd probably pick energy if I knew there was an energy sniper rifle, but since I'm not sure, all 3 skills are pretty low right now. Anyone got any advice on that?

I'm going energy / small weapons. Level 11 now, at level 10 I had 50 in energy and 40 in small guns. This is on Very Hard, but I haven't fought anything stronger than a Super Mutant Brute, unless you count those Yao Zombie Bears.

No problems in combat for me.

I just use the same tactics for taking down baddies. Basically sneak up on 'em until I'm within range, pull out my hunters rifle and aim for the head. One-hit kills are definitely a nice reward, especially hearing the chi-ching sound.

Heres a unsuspecting layout of how to get the Superior Tesla Armor surprisingly early in the game...and nope not by cheating either. Stumbled upon it while going through one of the main quest missions...

During the main quest mission of escorting Doctor Li and 3 other survivors out of the sewers to the citadel. You will come upon an area where you are attacked by Enclave soldiers from above and behind your group. Give Doctor Li the signal to wait while you scout ahead. Enter the room and turn around and look up. There are about 3 enclave soldiers on the top balcony. Commence to attack them.

You will notice one of the soldiers look different than the rest. And he is also firing a plasma rifle. This is the Tesla Soldier. Now make sure you have the Bloody Mess perk. Theres about an 75% chance you can make your target explode in pieces using the combat shot gun. Make it so and the soldiers will explode in pieces allowing some to fall down to your level.

Make sure you especially target the Tesla Operative. Once he goes down in pieces pin-point where some of the pieces land. You may have to save beforehand if the soldier does not explode or none of his parts fall from the balcony. You can also score a early plasma rifle off the body as well if you have the extra space.

The tesla Armor Gives: 50 DR, +10 to Energy Weapons & 20% Rad Res
The Helmet give a negative Charisma stat because it looks evil. And 10 DR w/ 5% rad res.

The armor is easily the most cool looking in the game. Thees are electric bolts that pulsates over the armor. Theres a energy tank on its back. And there are say, "electic bulbs all around the suit. The things is awesome.

Haha, just pulled this off. Awesome tip and badass armor.

Go with small guns (and yes that's anything from pistol to rifle), I'm pretty sure that small energy weapons benefit from that as well. When the time comes you can just put a few extras in energy, take the cyborg perk etc.

Small Arms/Gunslinger/Commando works quite nicely.

I just rolled through the Jefferson memorial killed something like fifteen Super Mutants with nothing but the hunting rifle.

I love the game. At first the tunnels bugged me, and then I remembered how much of FO1 and FO2 took place in underground areas that literally all looked the same.

And VATS, oh VATS. You give me the joy of blowing off leaping mole rat heads. Bless you.

Tell him he's dead early: 500 (or maybe it was 50, I forget) caps, you never find out who the android is (assuming you haven't already)

Find out the android's identity, then keep it a secret: Good assault rifle (forget what it's called, but it's worth over a 1000 caps if you want to sell it)

Reveal the identity once you know it: A perk that makes all VATS more accurate.

Tell the android you'll keep his an identity a secret, and then reveal it anyway: the assualt rifle AND the perk.

I'm not sure if you ever meet the Android saving group again.

Thanks I followed this.. I'm playing a good guy but the rewards were too good to pass up. I felt bad though
especially after following Zimmer up to the bridge and watching his confrontation with Harkness.. It's wrong what Zimmer was doing but gotta look out for #1

Can someone please direct me to Fort Independence? I have been walking around the wastes for about an hour looking for it.

If a PC player could post a screencap of their map with its location I would seriously love them until the end of time and space.

Yup. But he will still be with you always if you eat him afterwards. :D

Or just simply reload and watch your skimishes. If you think its too much fro him tell em to stay put.

I can't wait to kill him and then throw his meat into a pool of irradiated water

I think I'll shoot him off of the top of Tenpenny Tower and then go outside and collect the meat :lol

Does Steve Meister still post here ?

If so, what's the feeling at Bethesda right now ? Are you guys all happy knowing that you pulled off what most people thought you couldn't ?

For easier navigation don't forget the little arrows below the compass will show nearby places of interest. A filled arrow means you've gone there, outlines only are inexplored locations.

Alright, I rented this over the weekend and I need some help. I've done a couple of quests for the main story line (I just left Rivet City) but I'm completely broke, I'm addicted to something and I'm having withdrawal symptoms, I don't even know how to pick a lock, I have no health and no stimpacks. Can anyone point to a guide so I can learn about all this shit and also where I can stay in a bed where it doesn't cost over 100 caps.

Also, when does the game get fun. It's mostly scrounging for weapons and getting my ass beat by mutants. Where can I find some good weapons and more health. Also, how can I get some money. I only pick up a couple of caps off dead enemies.

Well i just lost my lvl 15 urban legend, so i guess its going to be a while before i finish fallout 3 since ill be having a hard time starting over again.

So... for those who've played both, how does this compare to Fable 2? I'm not looking to hear people rip one or the other, just give your opinion on whether this is a better experience. I've beat Fable 2 and probably won't be playing it much for some time (I could see myself coming back to it and trying Evil in the future, but don't have a desire to replay it immediately) so I'm planning on snagging this next although I expect LBP will get the majority of my attention next week.

The two games are like apples and oranges. Outside of the base RPG mechanics the two share nothing in common and as such shouldn't really be compared.

Both are must plays and two of the best games of the year.

Two very different games. You cant really compare the two and the best reference point for fallout 3 is Oblivion. You mess around a lot in fable 2, there is lots of freedom and sandbox type distractions to do. In fallout 3 there is a lot of wandering around the place, figuring out what you are supposed to do, try to stay alive and find some weapons ammo. Money matters oh soooo much more in fallout, you will be spending a lot of time looking through every nook and cranny to find every piece of item and gear you can so you can sell it back for some cash.

LBP is great and so is Fallout 3. I know you were asking vs. Fable 2, but I just figured I'd weigh in.

I've gotta say, LBP is a lot of fun but it's less rewarding than I'd hoped. Unless you have a consistent set of people to play online with, it could probably be more fun. But I have a bit less consistency so I'm not all that happy.

Just finished the main quest, so major spoilers ahead.
I'm pretty disappointed with how it turned out. The actual story was fine and more than I expected from a Bethesda game (I ended up sacrificing myself). The problem was the end cutscene, which was way too short. No mention of Megaton, no mention of what happened to Vault 101 after Amata took over, no mention of the Brotherhood or the whether the Enclave disbanded, etc. I thought Bethesda claimed there where over 200 endings? I expected more than 4 or 5 ambiguous images pasted together.

The game is overwhelming in terms of attention to detail. It's crazy that there's so much stuff in the game, and a lot of it can be bypassed entirely if you stick just to the main quest. Even the official guide is overwhelming, it's more like reading an encyclopedia than a regular guide. Bethesda has outdone themselves.

Since I am being an evil bastard I'm already pretty rich from killing merchants, so I decided to hire Jericho as my lackey. Having him is really helpful in fire fights, and he makes a great pack mule. I think it's been noted before, but he can wear Power Armor immediately. I was having him hold some that I had looted off a corpse and he put it on. It's like having a mean cyborg as a traveling companion. :lol

What? Did you just run straight to the main quest points and not do anything on the side?
The manual should tell you how to pick locks, and the first time a lock scenario pops up the game gives you a basic tutorial.

Anyway its an RPG. Talk to people, help em out (or not) steal stuff, sell crap, etc. etc.

I've only done the main storyline for now. I am currently at almost 0 HP and have no money, barely any ammo and am in withdrawal from some drug. :lol

I have no clue what to do at this point.
