Yeah, that perk is awesome. I got it early and if you're the adventuring type, you'll find a lot of books, so it definitely pays off nicely. Probably not worth getting in the later parts of the game, though.
Damnit, that was a pretty damn poor dungeon. I must admit, that dungeon visually looked straight out of oblivion, whereas the outdoor areas look much much nicer.
Heh, looking at pics...I can never pick a female in these kind of games...guess its because I am a dude
Oh, let me tell you... you haven't seen the last of those ants. That little cavern underneath the school isn't really a dungeon, it's more like a secret room.
There is a proper, epic-sized dungeon very nearby where you'll have to deal with a much more dangerous genus of ant. One of my favorite sidequests in the game.
I'm doing the "Following in His Footsteps" quest..
So I deal with Silver for Moriarty.. I go back to Megaton and he's nowhere to be found. I check the quest, make sure it's my primary and it gives me a location, which is out by the water at the nearby school. I head out there and there's nothing. I wait until night time, still nothing. I head back to Megaton ... still not there.
And I lack the science to hack his computer terminal to get the info he needs to give me.

Why are you so attached to the main quest? Simply explore and do side quests until you get a high enough science level. There is also apparel that gives you +10 science.
I wouldnt worry about it. Worst comes to worst someone here can tell you where to go. Ill tell you now if you want.
Exactly. The entire system is rendered meaningless if you could just master all of the skills like you can in JRPGs. Here you ave to pick and choose what interests you.
My numbers are not accurate as Luck and Intelligence affect the number of skill points, but most skills start off with base of 16~17. That means we need 83~84 points per skill to hit 100. There are total of 13 skills, so that's roughly 1079~1092. If you are able to find all 324 books + Comprehension, that's 648 points taken care of, leaving us with 431~444 points to deal with. On average of having 20 skill points per level, we have 380 points possible, leaving us to source for another 51~64 points. There's where the perks that give bonuses to skill points come in, and stacked with equipment that grants +5/+10 to skills, we've got it covered.
Realistically however, an average player will only come across 30~70 skillbooks in one run, assuming he isn't actively searching for them. So while the cap of lv 20 is meant to make players think about their build, the presence of several items, skillbooks notably, makes it possible to powerplay as well.
In short, while the level cap of 20 does limit the min-maxing game, it is still possible to stretch it in Fallout 3, and is a civil rebuttal to the understanding that only JRPGs allow players to max out stats.
I can personally verify that Eugene is repairable with other miniguns.

She wants the specifically labelled "Pre-War books".
You can find them all over the waste land too, and She gives you
100 caps
per book. you should be able to find 7 or 8 in the library. They are easy to spot as they arent destroyed or burned and are easily discerned from a distance (put your light on).
I've actually run into pre-war books she won't accept. It's either a glitch or these books weren't 'programmed' to be acceptable. They say 'Pre-War Book' just like normal and even look like one. But when you look at them on your inventory screen, they have the 'scrap metal' picture instead of the 'stack of books' picture. Hasn't been a big problem as I have only found 2 like that out in the world. Just something to watch out for.

Head of State quest question. (Is it broken?)
I got up to the part where I need to meet hannibal at the memorial. I cant find him anywhere. So after trying to figure out the dumb waypoints I went an killed all the slavers at the memorial hoping it would trigger him to come out. He is still no where to be found.
They walk all the way there so it takes them a while. There should be a map marker pointing to some nearby subway tunnels. Go inside them and then just wait 24-48 hours. Then pop out of the subways, Hannibal and crew should be waiting above the subway station for you.

Nah, it really has nothing to do with getting it on, but there are dialogue options that appear to help out with members of the opposite sex. My favorite is the Black Widow perk, when you use it at Girdershade on that guy who wants to get in the Nuka Cola girl's pants. You offer him a threesome, and he'll go out and look for Nuka Cola Quantums for you (
okay...I need some advice on leveling up. I am right at the begging of the game, on the mission to deliver the letter for lucy...my character is pretty underpowered, I mean the baseball bat is still my primary weapon...and I couldnt find where to buy anything in damn megaton...Shooting and melee mechanics seem a little clunky to take on the raiders without more power...

Remember, you also get experience for performing other tasks, like unlocking things, hacking computers, or delivering scrap metal to Walter. The place to buy things in Megaton is Moira's. Go down the hill, and hang a right up the catwalk right before the doc's place. It's at the top of the ramp.

At the beginning I suggest slowly traversing the landscape near Megaton, finding small settlements and ravaged houses to loot, returning to Megaton to heal every so often. After a little while you should have accumulated enough supplies and ammo to start exploring the wasteland more thoroughly which in turn increases the things you find and the people you fight.

That early in the game you need to look at each kill as a mini victory. You should at least have a pistol. You buy shit at Megaton from Craterside Supply. You cant miss it, as you enter the town, walk down towards the crated and walk up behind the clinic and youll see a big sign.
Stock up on stimpaks early on and loot every corpse. Just take it steady early on

i.) you can keep checking back for Moriarty, which might be a test of patience you might not want to endure. As a quest giver in the middle of a flagged quest he should not be dead, only knocked unconscious.
ii.) Make your way to Rivert City. There is a map of Fallout 3 hosted on gamefaqs.
iii.) Flag and go through Moria Brown's Survival Guide quest, in a late chapter she will ask you to go to Rivert City as well.
However, it should be noted that should you skip Galaxy News Radio, which is the next part of your quest and head directly to Rivert City, you're missing out on one of the coolest fights in the game. To keep things going, I would advise you to do other quests like Bloodlines and/or Survival Guide until Moriarty shows up.

I might be wrong on the name, but it's the guy up in the Water Processing Plant in Megaton. After fixing the pipes for him, he'll offer to buy Scrap Metal off of you for caps and XP.

If you're still in Megaton, you can buy weapons and ammo from Moira at Craterside Supply. It's next to the Water Processing Plant.
You probably need to wait until you're at least level 4-5, and have some decent gear, before tackling the letter quest. Lots of nasties you'll meet along the way, though the actual quest itself isn't difficult.
JMO, but I think the best way to gain some XP and low level gear is to clean out the Super Duper Mart, which is nearby that Elementary school you've already been through.

Walter's gone completely AWOL in my game (360) I can't find him anywhere in town for about the last in-game week. His sleeping shack in the back of the processing plant is constantly empty too.
Clover buggered off as well; granted I had left her at home for quite a while without talking to her, got back after
going through the part of the main quest from Rivet City with your Dad, through the Jefferson Memorial, then with Dr. Li to Citadel
, come back from all of that and she's vanished from my house.
Edit: And preliminary investigations on my earlier question reveal just regular 'Power Armor' won't repair the T51b with a repair skill of 50 - I'll try again as I increase repair.
im on level 4 trying to do the letter quest but those people (the family) are never in any of the spots! is there some trick to finding them? i went to the train station and the underground area and killed some dude who said the area was only "for the family". where can i find these douchebags?
p.s. im still getting my fucking ass kicked by people when i divert from that quest. i went to take on some fireants in the city and they absolutely destroy me.
thanks for the replies guys...yeah, I guess I was trying to jump into the missions too fast. I'll build up my character first. I am looking forward to the day when I can pound my enemies into the ground!
does anyone have any idea of the number of experience books in the world? I have read 58 so far. The thing is I dont have the comprehension perk and am at lvl 19. I would be willing to spend the perk on comprehension for my last level up if I know fo sho there is at least another 50 books in the world.

I had the same problem, and found him stuck in the floor on the top level of the Saloon. Not sure how that happened, because I don't think his routine even takes him that far into town. Anyway, I talked to his 'head' and his body immediately popped up through the floor and he walked back to the processing plant.

Ah, cheers. I'll try there - If not I'll try looking in really obscure places around town to see if I can untrap him. Dude's got scrap metal to buy from me.

dead. NPCs go wandering the walkways and fall off them/glitch through them. If you've a major quest of his open then he'll be stuck somewhere probably as NPCs seem to be immortal until they have no more use in the game
.
I've seen him in the bar and on the walkways up near the luxury apts. He's an old bloke with a grey beard wearing (light?) blue coveralls/overalls with no armour.

Oddly enough, I JUST did the exact same thing today - except I followed him figuring he would show me a huge stash of Quantums. Man, his pathfinding is LOOPY he was running all over the place and backtracking and such. I helped him kill a bunch of enemies so he would keep leading me to the Quantum rainbow.
All was going well until we ran across a Deathclaw which proceeded to kill him in one strike of his claws. Couldn't have saved him if I tried and I barely survived myself after it started coming after me. Just a bit of bad luck.
Looking at the map though, I noticed I was right next to the Nuka-Cola plant, so he did well leading me since I didn't see it marked on my map when the Nuka-Chick was talking about it.

D'oh, thanks for that - I've already done his freeform 'repair the water pipes' quest so he might be gone for good.
I'll have to see the Ghoul in the underworld to get rid of my scrap metal then. It's a bit of a shame as I'm finding it quite tough to raise caps, although selling shedloads of energy weapons from my more adventurous questing is keeping my head above water, but I've not been able to buy anything for my pad yet.

I like you. You've changed my opinion on the level 20 cap.
However this doesn't change the fact that not being able to play after you finish the last quest sucks =/ But that's more of a minor quibble and annoyance than anything else.
If you could gain just 5 more levels, I think it would be the perfect balance. As it stands now, I'll miss out on several of the more obscure perks that weren't important for my character, but would've been fun to experiment with.

There are about 350 skill books, so it's still a good perk to get. Don't forget to hunt for bobbleheads either, they give you some awesome stat-ups and they look cool in your house.
Clover is boring. She uses a Sawed-off Shotgun and I have yet to see her mow down enemies like Fawkes. =/ That makes 2 evil followers that are mediocre. Can I have a 85% refund? I'm nice enough to pay 15% for the test drives. These followers have defects y'know. My 2000 caps!... ~.~ I feel ripped off. Should have done more good deeds.

There're more caveats to it. If you really want to locate all 324 books without wasting your skill points from leveling, that means putting points into every skill until they hit 40~45 and let the 25 books (50 points per skill with Comprehension) take care of the rest. That also means you have to grit your teeth and endure with being underpowered for a long time until your core combat skills have hit 90~95. You also have to keep track of which skill has hit 40 from leveled skill points so the books don't go to waste. Cap is at 100, and if you hit it first before locating the skillbooks, they aren't going to be much help. The next challenge being that apart from spending $ on Prima's guidebook, as of this post I have yet to find an online source for the locations of all books. Hopefully this changes before Christmas. Last but not least, no one needs to find them all to complete the quests or to survive in the Wastelands. It is just an optional possibility, but far from being practical.
And you're not getting any arguments from me on how it sucks that you can't explore the Wastelands after finishing the main quest. I'm in the same camp.
In short, while the level cap of 20 does limit the min-maxing game, it is still possible to stretch it in Fallout 3, and is a civil rebuttal to the understanding that only JRPGs allow players to max out stats.
Right-o, but really, most people aren't going to hit anywhere near the numbers you just laid out.
In reality, most people probably won't touch 1/3 of that. It's possible to come close to a max-out character of sorts, but extremely unlikely a player will do so. IMO they're much more likely to make another run through the game, which is probably what the devs intended.
Oh, and I wasn't implying only JRPGs allows for the maxed out character, just that FO3 seems to be built in opposition to that.
Nice math BTW, we need more people like you around here.
No, they didn't.... please stop spreading okrim's FUD. The consensus is that normal mapping has been downscaled on the PS3 version, and that the shading detail isn't quite as good.
Its advantage lies in a better specularity resolve, which produces a glossy effect on certain textures, though the textures themselves are exactly the same on both consoles. We already know about the AA issues.
Bottom line is that the game is fantastic and that the aesthetic differences between console versions shouldn't deter anyone from picking it up.
FUD? I think that poor bit of speculative fiction better defines your usage of the word as I never quoted okrim's comments, nor ever even saw them. I was referring to a completely different topic on b3d where they were also talking about the different versions of Fallout 3.
Another member (Brad iirc) went in to detail about how the PS3 version actually has more in common with the PC version in terms of game assets.
You were right about one thing, the game is definitely worth picking up on any platform.

Sorry, I should have been more specific... before okrim was banned here, he registered as assurdum over at B3D. That's who I was referring to in that thread.

Damn this game is eating my time like mad. So awesome.
I've mostly been sidequesting, and I haven't even done the first main quest outside of the vault. :lol I just reached Rivet City, is there any chance I can fuck up there and miss certain steps in the main quest if I talk to the wrong person or something?
