The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Seems like just wandering into places in Fallout is useless. I just spent 15 minutes at RobCo company only to find a switch that I couldn't activate. I'm sure there's a small sidequest related to this but since I don't know where that is, it's useless.

Ya but did u earn any exp or find anything of use in the building? Also when you eventually do get the quest you know exactly where to go. Glass half full gaming FTW! :D

:lol I was roaming through Greyditch (sp?) at night... a nice, quiet night... and OUT OF NOWHERE a small nuclear explosion goes off in the arroyo/ditch/whatever you want to call it. It was beautiful.
About 10 seconds later another one, then a string of them- all in the same area. There was about 100 yards of a smoke line. It was bizarre... but it gave me a chance to enjoy the awesome smoke effect.

I'm assuming a car exploded and caused a chain reaction?

I looked around and didn't see anyone that might have set it off... :/

Pretty sure I saw the exact same thing.

Maybe my priorities are all messed up but after finally playing gears 2 yesterday all I could think of while playing it is how I wanted to go back to F3 and finish that ant subway quest( I did).

I'm down to 3 bullets for my sniper rifle. is there a shop or person that sells ammo for this weapon?

Sniper ammo? :lol
Yeah, you get like none. Ever. The entire game. I'm level 16 and I've found 50 bullets total, 30 if I didn't have the scavenger perk.

First the LBP music recall and now this? When did game publishers become the PC police?

Japan will just mod it in along with like 5000 character models if they want it.

I don't remember ever being so conflicted whether to buy a game or not. On one hand there's the setting which is very interesting to me, but on the other hand you hear people calling this 'oblivion with guns' and I never saw the appeal of that game. Then you hear people on gaf and on podcasts gushing and the dial goes back into the 'buy' area. Just don't know.

If you like the setting but not the oblivion gameplay, try the originals at www.gog.com. It's gog-tastic.

I didn't read every post in this thread, but I've seen alot of comments that say that they didn't like Oblivion but love Fallout 3. I personally love Oblivion, quirks and all (makes it that much more fun in a weird way), but Fallout 3 is very much the better game, almost all the downsides of Oblivion have been taken care of. They also made very good use of the setting.

This game is not oblivion with guns. Thats WAY oversimplifying it. I had trouble getting into Oblivion as well, but I am literally obsessed with Fallout 3. Being the same game engine there are similarities, but 90% of my gripes with oblivion do not exist in Fallout 3. I guess depending on which aspects of Oblivion turned you off you may or may not like it, but it really is a much better, tighter, less buggy game all around. More fun to. :D

So despite it being useless to explore, I still went into vault 106.

just some crazies and a purple cookoo light that spawns Butch, or is there something I missed? No real prize or boss at the end besides the ammo stash?

The Germantown one (Big Town quest)? I already checked there...

It's in a closet, not even locked iirc.
A locked closet is where I became awesome for the first time in the game too. Like 3 AR, 2 combat shotguns, I was so happy over my 50% CND 10mm pistol :lol

I prefer to think of Fallout as "Oblivion with a plot I actually give a fuck about" or maybe "Oblivion with MUCH better combat".

Hmmm why am I comparing this game to Oblivion again?

It's much better than Oblivion. Oblivion was Morrowind without the awesome customization and "freedom" of Morrowind, it was also smaller. Fallout is an evolution of the Bethesda games and is much better in just about every way.

Without writing out all the things that make it better, I'll just say if you have an interest in "western RPGs" there's no reason to skip this game.

Because it's the same thing.

Except with guns.
And a better setting.

That's all I know anyway, I've sunk 26 hours so far and I am halfway done with the main quest. I only played 20-30 minutes of Oblivion before I gave up on that crap. (No offense, just so many things disagreed with me)

Question about items, can i store them in any green UI colored container or its only safehouses?

Green container = never disapear
red container = bye bye items

?

People only say that because it's the same engine and walking around the world has the same kind of feel about it, but that's where it ends really. If you could tell us what specifically you didn't like about Oblivion, it might be easier to help you?

The red just means the container belongs to an NPC, so you'd lose karma if you take something from it.

If Oblivion is anything to go by the only guaranteed safe storage is in one of the apartments you're given, though presumably you can also use a companion to permanently store stuff too.

I just dropped a bunch of Vault security helmets on the ground when first entering Megaton, they were still there at the end-game. Seems like items stay forever (at least on PC).

This. It seems town is safe. But I stashed some stuff in a mailbox and it was gone after a few days.

man, what are you talking about? :lol you could maybe list a handful of games that reward you for exploring as much as fallout 3. if there's a dungeon you can't fully explore then come back later when yr doing the proper quest. most places are fully accessible from the very start.

that's tenpennys key to his apartment in his tower, there is a guard outside of his door, top floor

Can Charon use anything besides the shotgun? How do I switch it up if so?
give him a better weapon than that shotgun, but it must be more powerful than it for the switch to work (52+), just put it in his inventory, also the gun will wear out for him , just like it does for you.

I bought this game last night (partly because of this thread), and so far am having a blast. I loved Oblivion, but I feel this game just has so much more of an atmosphere to it. I like how the enemies are difficult, and in the Wastelands basically I just try to survive. So much fun. It's one of those games, where I went to bed late last night after playing for about 5 hours, and then throughout the day thinking about how I couldn't wait to get home from school/work to play it again. I was choosing between Fallout 3 and Fable 2, and I'm glad I bought Fallout 3.:D

Dechaios said:

Give him a weapon and the corresponding ammo type. I've ran a simple test by giving them Alien Blaster, A3-21 and Gatling Laser, these work but for some reason both Charon and Clover won't take the Experimental MIRV even though I've given them 16 mininukes and took away every weapon in their inventory. Take note that followers' default weapons have infinite ammo and never degrades while weapons that you give them will degrade, and they will use up ammo as well. It is your call really, since ammo and repair parts for Small Guns are in abundance in Fallout 3. Late in the game Big Guns and Energy Weapons are also relatively common and thus easy to scavenge parts for, although some guns and ammo are still scarce. From my experience, The Gatling Laser, Flamer, .44 Magnums (which is why I hesitate to use the Lincoln's Repeater as my main gun) and Sniper Rifles are pretty rare, and require you to identify respawn points to get hold of their parts and ammo.

And Charon is great, better than Dogmeat in one area - he's your 2nd mule. ^

Well I just fucked up the Big Town quest.

"The robots are in the junkyard if you're wondering." Where are the robots?! NOWHERE! I got so fed up that I just pulled out my flamer and burned them all up.

But it has infinite ammo like the shotgun?!

Playing evil this time around is so rewarding. I thought it would be hard to bring myself to blow up Megaton, but from the point Jericho started unleashing fury on the town to the point I sealed the deal at the top of Tenpenny Tower may have been some of the most fun I've had in a game all year. I can't wait to see how different all the other quests can be from the other side. :D

Im taking the same approach as you, did a all good side, gonna do a evil side later this month, but in terms of the ending
I chose to convince eden to kill himself, then I tried all the different alternate endings I could at the very end such as inserting the virus or not inserting it, and getting the elder to sacrifice herself...one question, if you let eden live? whats the ending?

Can someone explain to me how partners work. Do they take ammo? Can you give them stimpacks to heal themselves? How do you get them to equip certain weapons? Do weapons degrade like yours? Can you use them to store more stuff? I just got Star Paladin Cross.

Only real glitch I encountered was jumping onto a pile of rubble in a building and getting stuck against the ceiling.

Fortunately I F5/F9 like every 10 seconds so it wasn't a problem.

It helps to set up backstory.
The vaults were government run experiments, the drugs being pumped into the vents is another example of it. You start to hallucinate and find more about what that vault was like.
If you aren't interested in learning more about the world then it's all for nothing, more or less. I personally loved looking through every area I could for that reason.

Also, you can find a
bobblehead doll for a stat boost
in the vault.

They only equip the best weapon they have. Cross will generally use her super sledge because her first priority is melee unless you tell her otherwise through dialogue. If you give them a weapon that you find and they use it, it will degrade. They can be used to store things, but for some reason I thin Cross is getting pissed off with me using her as a mule because she carries less and less shit every time I sell off what she was holding.

As for healing, their health regenerates when you clear an area of enemies. I don't know whether they use healing items outside of that, though, if you provide them.

If you give them weapons, they'll need ammo. Weapons degrade, but armor you give them doesn't. Most can wear power armor, though for some reason Clover can't wear the helmets. They can carry a bunch of stuff for you, but they do have a limit.

I got that from the terminal at the Citadel and one at the actual vault. Just though there would be more to it than a
doctor with slightly more health than the other crazies and an extra ammunition box at the end of it

They're accessible, except there's no reason to access them unless you've talked to the person who will trigger that quest. Anyway, I'm getting nitpicky, the game is great and the "dungeons" usually tell a great story.

If you've already sweeped the area, it'll take mere minutes to finish the quest when you get it. I had a few go that way, and hardly seemed a problem. What's more of an issue for me is some areas don't seem to have any point or reward. I went into these caverns and it was just minelurks without a decent gun or anything to find. Though before that I had an incredible time raiding an office building filled with super mutants. While that 'dungeon' had no story, it was well designed and had a few cool rewards, like a .44 magnum with plenty of ammo.

Can you own both the house in Megaton and Tenpenny tower? I read in a Fallout 3 wiki that if you
help the ghouls invade the tower in the Tenpenny Tower quest that Roy willlet you live there
. Is this true? I can't get a clear answer.
