The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Wow. I'm sorry but how exactly am I suppost to stock up before leaving when no one in town sells any ammo (moira right now has 4 rockets and a couple shotgun shells). Nor does anyone have any cash to buy any of my junk? It seems it's an economy that never adds anything but what you buy/sell. That's bad design. Perhaps it's a bug but either way it's bad design. I've explored enough to have a lot of junk but even after waiting for days there's no restocking something wrong. I've been searching every raider body and I'm taking the sneak path conserving. And what situation had the game put me in? In a subway tunnel (did get enough to get info) with only a bat 1 grenade and a supermutant. Fun.

They do restock, just not instantly (that WOULD be bad design). So again, your argument is flawed. If you've been searching everyone you kill and you're still out of ammo even on Normal difficulty (which is really easy), then somethings's wrong or you're just wasting it. And what do you mean "what situation had the game put me in"? YOU put yourself in that situation. It's an RPG. Your actions have consequences. The fact that you can put yourself in a bad situation by not being careful enough is good design, not bad.

Where is the highest amount of people to kill? Tenpenny Tower
after the ghoul invasion
?

I don't take sides, I kill everyone.

Also, KILL THE WATER GUYS! THEY'RE FUCKING SPIES!

I still need to track down Big Town... So much stuff to do. Also tempted to start up a neutral female character at some point.

Anything interesting in the Bethesda Building?

how do you get the bobbleheads to show up on the map?

click on the big button next to all the little location buttons. There you can filter bobbleheads/skill books

dayum, hover over a bobblehead's location, they even do a mini slideshow of the exact location

Honestly just stick through it. The beginning is tough for ammo and money. You are just getting the hang of stuff and like a typical RPG you suck at the start. The game makes you really scavange for anything of value. It does a great job of making you really feel like you are in a wasteland. I assure you after awhile you will get to a pont where you a mass so much ammo a weapons its nuts.

I dont want to but a time on it, but i would say before 5-10 hours you are going to be low on weapons/money depending on your repair skill. I was frustrated at the start, I know what you are talking about. Didnt last long till I saw the light :P

Yeah it takes me back to that house :( Oh well, I would do the console command to bring him back but I don't want to mess up anything else so I'll reload an older save and try the quest again.
This one confused me at first too. Nearby the house there's a little single person nuclear bunker thingy. The kid was inside that. If you were looking at the entrance to the house he'd be off to the left.

Just started playing this and im having a problem with wanting to search every possible thing before i go into a room in front of me :lol. I have such a bad item hoarding problem!

Too many objects in this world! Aghhhh!

Resist the urge!!

Nah, just kidding, clean those suckers out!!
Every cup is worth it, and every bent tin can is crying out for your gentle touch!

HTF are you guys struggling with ammo? I've been playing for almost 30 hours and ammunition has yet to be a problem. Are those of you struggling with this not using VATS? Its the most effective and ammo friendly way to kill enemies. I also suggest not wasting ammo on things like radroaches and mole rats, all way up to finding Vampire's Edge, the crowbar and combat knife served me fine in killing minor enemies. Having a high repair skill is also key, since it could be the difference in dropping an enemy with 1-2 bullets as opposed to 5-6+ shots.

I killed a wandering trader near Megaton as soon as I got out. Instant caps and I got a combat shotgun to boot. I killed some Raiders in the school, and then I found a trader and merc to kill so I was able to get a hunting rifle and assault rifle pretty early. I'm a little low on caps but I'm currently hoarding some stuff in my house.

The Chinese sword (in the old barn) comes in very handy against raiders with pool cues, critters, etc.

are the power armors worth wearing with the -2 Agility associated with them?

You get a +2 STR with the Brotherhood/Outcast power armors which gives you +20 in bag weight. You also get good RAD resistence, but I think its worth the trade-off for the bag space.

I have sneak at 100+ and the power armor definitely makes it much tougher for me to sneak, though.

Yeah, but they weigh a load. Around 25kg, right?

I can't remember how much they weigh, but I did get the extra 20 WG in bag space.... went from a 270 limit to a 290 limit without having to drop any other equipment

What's the deal with hunters in the game? I don't know if they are a good/bad/neutral faction. For most of the game, when I have come across hunters, they appear green, am able to trade items, and do not attack me. Last night I was in a spot where 3 hunters were resting and drinking cokes, no big deal. Out of nowhere they turned red on my radar and started to attack me.

What triggered their change? When I killed them I got good karma. So these hunters are just as bad as raiders and talon company men? What about the outsider brotherhood?

I think one of the people I need to speak with to finish a quest has gone missing. If I use console commands to bring him back, will this mean I can't get the achievement for the quest? ie. does the game count that as cheating like it would in a 360 game?

The Quest is "Those!" and it's the latter part of the mission where you have to find the boy a new place to live

I know when I went through it, he was hiding in the mini bunker thing next to the diner.

Maybe they were looking for a quick meal? I've run across hunters that were after the deadliest game of all.

Rats, I was looking at my achievement list and 'rescue from paradise' was still in the story quest part. my speech skill was so high I apparently skipped an entire chunk of main quest

with the cyborg perk + high energy gun skill + android plasma rifle I'm breezing through the game. it's almost too easy now

My Towel tricked 360 is surviving pretty well during Fallout 3 :D

I hear ya...one thing we did to help was to let you know that certain drawers, desks, etc are [Empty].

Speaking of Achievements, I still can't get the 'Scientific Pursuits' one to trigger for me (PC version). Apparently its a known problem if you...um...explore too much. At least that's what I've read on a few forums.

I've got pretty much the same build you do, though, and after hitting the cap, combat just feels as if it gets in the way.

lol, I'm doing
Ranger Reilly's quest with Jericho at my side and when I entered the Hotel through the top bridge he just disappeared! I'm sure he didn't fall out nor died and too far away from the last save... 1000 caps gone :_
Is it possible to get him again or is he gone forever?

Loving the game so far. GOTY.

I would go back to an earlier save and leave the merchants alone. Later in the game, they sell a lot of rare ammo.

This game is so fucking amazing. I keep saying it, but every hour of playing confirms it again. I'm almost done with the story (I guess), I loved
the choice the 'president' gave you. If you choose to spike the water, does everything except humans really die? Are you left with a (partially) empty wasteland?

Okay, so the soundtrack is pissing me off now. Don't get me wrong - the style of music is *MY* style of music. I love every track they licensed... They just didn't license enough of them. I wonder how many more tracks they could add into the game for 100 to 200 MSP?

Not necessarily. I had a hunter literally come out of nowhere and save my ass then help me kill two super mutants. It seems they act individually and don't belong to any "good/evil" mandate.

Pretty much.
The ending shows everyone except the enclave dying, even the people in rivet city, etc.

Glad to see your liking it!

Finally getting some time to devote to this game!

I was on the Big Trouble in Big Town quest and getting ready to finish it but
no robutts in the junkyard
. -_-

So I'm just going to leave that quest unfinished for now. Maybe when I come back I'll have enough small arms or something to train the bastards. Right now I have high energy and everything else at an acceptable level. I was planning to start training either explosives or big guns next. I can't decide.

It really is, even though the technical glitches are sometimes enough to cause an ulcer. :D

Screw Big Guns and explosives. Improve Energy weapons. The Gatling Laser and the Plasma Rifle are awesome.

seriously. I love the radio but it needed like... triple the amount of tracks. I kept thinking that other stations would pop up, but I was disappointed in that regard. the tracks they have are awesome though, even though I'm tired of hearing them now.

You can't play past the ending so you're not really left with anything. But yes, pictures do show the scenario you described.

I just wish they'd put in Nat King Cole's version of Crazy She Calls Me. That's one of my favourite songs ever. I had it once but I lost the cassette that was given to me. :(

I really hope the DLC adds at least one new station. Hell, a quest to help Three Dog expand his music collection by hunting down discs around the wasteland would be perfect!

I'm 6 or 7 hours in and I'm already having trouble finding the motivation to boot it up because it all feels so samey. Does the environment vary later on, or is it all just wasteland and squalor?

Also, honestly, I'm not really having much fun. This is my first Bethesda RPG and I've adjusted to the lack of explicit direction, but I'm still waiting for the fun to kick in. I'm poor and I get that I have to scavenge for junk to sell, but then the game punishes me for doing what I'm supposed to do by capping the amount of weight I can carry. That's not fun to me, it's tedious. Same with weapon degradation.

It gets better when you find people to kill.

I'll do that for another character. I plan on sticking with small arms and maybe energy weapons for the first run.

I think I'm level 6 and I currently have small arms, repair and lock pick at ~60. Should I start putting some points into other stats like science, sneak, and medicine.

As someone who was thoroughly unimpressed by Oblivion, I have to say that playing Fallout 3 has been a much more engrossing experience from the first minute. I don't know if because of the fact that it's just flat out more fun to traverse and interact with an apocalyptic wasteland, if it has something to do with the more satisfying combat, having more interesting characters, or if it's just the fact that it forces you to behave more like a survivor, but I actually want to return to this world more and more as opposed to Oblivion which made me want to make like Rip Van Winkle and pass out under a tree.

I'm only level 4 right now and I've been going just about all melee so far, having actually
finished the entire Fire Ant quest with no weapons other than my baseball bat and a couple of bullet shots
. However, I've had to trash that whole save portion once I realized that
you get good shit if you save Simms
. Ahh well, scavenging trips ahoy!

Nice one Bethesda, it's been a really fun game so far despite my worst skepticism.

Thanks, I was wondering about that. So don't finish the main quest until I want to be done with my character?

Regarding the quest from the suit guy in Megaton:

I was thinking, since I really dont want to nuke megaton - what if I accept the mission, plant the device and then meet up with him. Then VATS-sawed-off-shotty his head and hopefully he will have my payment on him and megaton survives?
Most likely all he would have would be his suit and I'd probably lose Karma but I think its worth a shot. :lol

Don't know what other type of environment you'd expect in a place blown to hell with nukes.

Do the first couple chapters of the Wasteland Survival Guide quest from Moira, that one does a good job of getting you on your feet. At least it did for me. Also
disarming the bomb and turning Mr. Burke over to Lucas Simms is another easy way to get going

More like
Gain Karma

I love when you've whittled down an enemies HP to Critical via VATS then go up to them with the Shotgun and blast them away in realtime. Their limbs fly off and its just too awesome. I hope more RPG like FPS employ this type of fusion of strategy/realtime battles.
