The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Hopefully not a repeat post, an equipment database for all the Fallouts, including 3:

Welcome to GameBanshee's fully searchable Fallout equipment database! A massive amount of work has gone into this database to ensure that virtually every piece of equipment from Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout Tactics, and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is included. Feel free to use the advanced parameters below or try our categorized search, if you prefer. Enjoy!

So I just started this game yesterday. Any tips for a player new to Fallout? Any skills/stats/perks to avoid? Any major items that are missable as I go through the game?

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/file/939933/54828

If you want so have a good laser gun skill, avoid small guns, and vice versa. Concentrate either on Science or Lockpicking, don't put too much points into stuff like barter or explosives. And yes there are a lot of IMO useless perks there, read the above and especially the perk section where you can find some good recommendations of what perks to use and which are a waste.

If you pick the comprehension perk you can max out almost every skill though, if you find all the skill books and bobbleheads, but don't concentrate on skills and perks you won't ever use anyway.

Some stuff is also missable.

Just finished Blood Ties. Cooooooooooooooooooooool.
The Family protects Arefu in exchange for blood packs.

Don't forget to "learn the ways of the vampire". Blood packs are no longer useless! Yay!

Bad move. I took the
Vampire Hunter D approach and killed all of the vamps before rescuing the villager. The loot you can pick up is way better than the actual quest rewards anyway. Scored a Vampire's Edge, Sishcabob, and some pretty cool armor just off Vance alone.

Anyone else keeps getting their game freezing at a certain point in the game? I can't access Rivet City anymore on my 55 hour bad karma file. It freezes after about 20 seconds each time I enter the stairwell. This kinda sucks since it's the only populated place left in my game. >_<

He can still do that. Arefu will just become hostile

Oh, really? Nice, will do.

Nameless, I'm running good guy.

I'm still on the good side despite looting the entire place.

Does he drop the Shish schematic if you kill him? If not, you're better off doing things the peaceful way. One Shish < one hundred Shishes (or however many you could make based on the game's raw materials, but it's a lot)

I killed him after I got the schematics.

Also, the traders can die. Lucky Hadith died in my game. Somewhere, way offscreen. And the son of a bitch was carrying a Shish schema when he died because I didn't know multiple copies = good thing. I don't think I'll be able to find his corpse. I have no idea where it could be. The traders cover a very wide area.

Thats why I took the initiative and killed them myself.

EDIT: Their bodies disappeared from the ditch outside Megaton I left them in. I didn't think bodies disappear in this game.

Question about the Strictly Business quest:

Ok, I've enslaved 2/3. The last guy is Flak @ Rivet City. I can get him to a private location (e.g. stairway), mez and collar him. The problem is that every time the guards start looking for me and shooting at me. Is there a way to tag him without the guards going ballistic?

Maybe you'd have to follow him to his sleeping quarters? I don't know, people got mad at me even without a guard around. This is basically a quest for the bad karma route. I made a duplicate file just to complete it for the achievement and then went back to my old file.

OK, thanks. So it looks like I'm screwed either way. Can you return to Rivet City if all the guards are pissed? Do I have to kill all the guards? Can I? I still have to
meet my father in the lab
.

If you kill the guards and leave the city, I don't think they'll be hostile towards you when you return. Sometimes while wiping out Rivet City, I would knock out non-killable NPCs, have them stand up and not attack me. :lol

You can kill most of the people in Rivet City, but not everyone.

If leave town for a few days, guards will "forgive" you.

I'm not a fan of those HD Textures in the comparison shots. In one shot they've just added more rocks on the ground, it looks more cluttered and not nearly as good. That's not how you do HD Textures.

Had some great scenic views today: on top of Tenpenny towers and on one of the SatCom arrays used by raiders. I shot Tenpenny for fun, put on his pimp suit and I was king of the wasteland

How? I already "finished" the quest, do I just go back and tell him that everyone's on board?

As far as i can remember yes but you have to ask
him to teach you their ways. I was polite as i'm a good guy and that warms him up to you and i think he offers to show you their way and then you can ask. this is only available *after* you have spoken to Eden King? at Arefu after resolving things with Vance.

Beat the game, took me 30hrs, obviously I didn't do all the side quests but I played enough of the game to the point where I felt like I was done with it.

My second fav game of the year, only behind MGS4. As far as the poor endings people are complaining about I don't understand how you couldn't see that coming when there are so many endings and that fact that pretty much every open ended game has shallow endings.

In terms of the DLC, who is that going to work? How can you play it of your current save if in the last mission there is essentially no turning back? ALso it seems like the Broken Steel DLC is the big one worth waiting for.

I didn't know Schematics stacked (atleast the Bottlecap Mines do). Do all schematics stack (if you were to find multiple)>

Nice

And I just made some
Deathclaws
. This thing is fucking ferocious. I nearly took out all of Megaton with just that equipped as a weapon. I probably would have fared better if Melee was my main Weapon skill (its at around 33)

Jesus christ... I went into the end
knowing it was going to be bad but I didn't expect that! Such bullshit! Though, it does leave room for survival, the ending is ambiguous as to whether you live or die, you just sorta pass-out. Of course, I didn't save before walking in the door, but luckily I only lost half an hour and get to do the EPIC ROBOT BATTLE AGAIN. But seriously, that was the end? It just sort of... happens, out of nowhere. I'm curious what slide show other people got. I even beat it a couple times just to see what differences could come up (putting in the FEV, not putting in the FEV, going in yourself, making Lyons go in, etc) Oddly enough, I got called selfish when I went in myself, but selfless when Lyons went in, go figure. :lol Other than that, only thing that came up with Agatha. And I've done all the sidequests but the two slave related ones.

Just ordered in on Amazon (along with GOW 2, Crackdown, GR 2, NG II :P)!

They should all be here on Monday.

Big fan of Fallout 1 and 2. Cant wait.

Question: For someone who kinda got tired of Oblivion (mostly because of the low damage melee attacks, at least early in the game), will I enjoy this game?

The game is way more varied (in regards to equipment and places to find) than Oblivion. Also, most dungeons usually have at least one good cache of weapons, ammo or something even more valuable. I think that's one of the biggest things that it has over Oblivion (and will fuel you interest in exploring every nook and cranny).

If I remember correctly
during the slide show it shows Lyons staring at a pile of goo where the main character use to be.

Code:
tgm - Toggle God Mode
tmm 1,1,1 - Add all map markers
(Click a door) + unlock - Unlock a door
tcl - Toggle CoLlision detection
Just in case you want to fuck around. Remember to save beforehand, so you don't break your autosaves or whatever.

Buggy-ass game.

When I convince the folks in Tenpenny Tower to allow the ghouls to rent out rooms, Mr. Tenpenny himself disappears and dies the instant I leave the Tunnels.

When I instead kill Crowley in Underworld as I previously agreed to do with Mr. Tenpenny, and return, with a quest objective list that says "(Optional): Kill Crowley" & "Talk to Tenpenny for your reward," Mr. Tenpenny still interacts as if Crowley is alive. While saying "believe me, I'd know" if he was dead.

This has got to be a byproduct of just how absurdly freeform your quest approaches can be.

Give this guy the key, talk to that guy, kill those guys, etc.

Hell, just to test if I could fail I shot Agatha when I had the violin with me. New Objective: Find a Buyer. :lol

So their quest scripting is impressive, but its complexity may lead to massive frustration. Not sure what to do. I guess I'll just let Tenpenny disappear and be dead and take credit as if I killed him.

Explain... if I find a second schematic of the same kind, I can make a better weapon? Or I can mix different shematics somehow or what?

She fell off a walkway. It has yet to be patched.

Game needs some serious work.

Also, completed Head of State about a week of game time ago. The NPCs aren't dead, or the quest would have failed. They're not at the Temple, either, and I saw them leave.

This was long enough ago in game time that I wouldn't want to go back for it, but I'm quite grumpy. Unless you're explicitly doing an escort quest, NPCs should "fast travel" and just appear at a given site after x hours.

Is that Nathan from Megaton that you kill in the Enclave building? When I was running through, just blasting everyone, some old guy ran around a corner and started firing so I blew his head off then noticed his body looking a little like Nathan but I was too busy to search him. Then I went back to Megaton later and he's not there. Does it ever explain why he's there, why he's shooting at you?

Also, is there any mod that opens up the whole map? Beat the game, starting a new one.

I know. The only patch released so far didn't actually fix any bugs. I'm not familiar with how Oblivion update history went, but I hope that we'll see a major patch before the DLC comes out.

Head of state was weird for me too. I fast travelled to the memorial to finish the quest, guys weren't there. I thought they could've been killed along the way, so I reloaded the save... Then I figured out I had to wait a bunch of hours to let them arrive, which worked.

That quest is said to be riddled with bugs. I also read that Hannibal and the others can walk into the Wasteland (while you're doing the objectives) and get themselves killed. Multiple saves in that quest come in handy.

Still, I can tolerate F3 way more in the bug department than Fable, where a bug is fatal because of the auto save. If you disable all auto saves and create multiple saves in Fallout, nothing too drastic can happen

Just got the game yesterday and i have 1 question. Are there any vehicles in the game similar to the horses in Oblivion? I really enjoyed walking/riding in Oblivion rather than just fast traveling everywhere.

Not yet, but personally I didn't mind walking around all that much. It worked well with environment in creating the apocalyptic atmosphere. I wouldn't at all be surprised if there's future DLC, though.
