The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Not if you save often and are playing as a bad karma character. Just load game right before you level, then go into a town and donate money until you are neutral karma. Go level up, get achievement. Reload, donate until your karma is good, level up, get achievement. You could do something similar going the other way by killing towns people that will give you negative karma, just a little trickier to do, though still tons easier than literally playing through 3 times for the achievements.
Haha, thanks!

Started a new game and I'm putting most of my skills into small guns (switching to energy around 75 or so?) speech and science. Should be interesting instead of going almost straight combat. I suck at character building haha.

I maxed Small Arms, Speech, Science, Medicine, Repair, Lockpick, Sneak and Explosives :lol

Not hard to do with max int, educated, comprehension and a willingness to do some skill book/bobblehead planning. Heck I wasnt even trying so if you went crazy with skill books and bobbleheads you might be able to max every skill :lol

How do you donate money like that?

Is there any way to increase Charisma other than the bobblehead? (already got it)

Really getting tired of having to fight radscorpians and molerats so I want to get the Animal Friend perk, but it looks like they have requirements outside of just level, kinda shitty to figure that out now...

heh yeah, what happened to having to play through the game multiple times, bethesda, or was that just for nuking megaton or not (we shouldnt be anywhere near full max chars in a damn fallout game :lol ). Meh prolly was in the same place the "200" endings stuff came from (:lol )

You could use Intense Training next time you level up, which allows you to put one point into any of your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes.

Here are a few of the suits I have gathered in the game.

My favorite so far, The Mechanist!

Just beat it...fun game.

I didn't like it as much as Oblivion, but it was definitely solid. The ending came up on me quicker than I thought it would. I chose (ending spoiler)
to sacrifice myself and just corrupt the water supply with the virus. Figured it was the right thing to do. More would likely die from trying to fight the mutants off than the amount of ghouls and such would, and is probably the best boost humanity could get at that point. Also this is probably the first game where when a sacrifice is mentioned or something I immediately hopped up to offer my avatar. Probably had something to do with the world. Everything was just so grim. With your dad dying, Amada forcing me out of the Vault, and with things being the way they were I just felt like it was fitting.

I'm still looking for an RPG that really combines the best of what Bethesda and Bioware offer. I need Biowares well developed comrades, relationships, love interests, and cinematic quality. At the same time I need Bethesdas huge open vistas, vast exploration, and incredible amounts of depth.

I've been trucking it with 270 for equipment. I want like 380. Is there any way to get it higher some how? Half of the time is spent traveling back to some place to sell goods or put stock in a locker. It gets old when you're in a huge place and there's dozens and dozens of stuff to loot.

Strong Back perk, get Charon and another companion and don't forget to load them down first (Fawkes can carry the most and also needs the least gear). Other than that, Power Armor'll load you down by 45 pounds, but it adds 2 strength so it's the same as 25 pound combat armor. So it's just a matter of Strength. My character can carry 300 lbs and usually leaves his Megaton home with ~90-100 lbs of gear. But that includes Shiskebab, Eugene, plenty of Nuka Grenades, Power Armor & Helm.

Eugene is awesome. Awesome is Eugene.

For PC users that want to downgrade their character because the game has become too easy.

Before attempting this, save the game!

First, set your new S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats. These have a value from 0 to 10. So if you want to be half the man you used to be, then substitute NEW_VALUE in each of the commands that now follow with half of your current value for that attribute.

Go to your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats screen on your pipboy to see your current values.

Open the console.
The key to open it is either ^ or ~ (unsure about localized keys)

Code:
player.setav strength NEW_VALUE
player.setav perception NEW_VALUE
player.setav endurance NEW_VALUE
player.setav charisma NEW_VALUE
player.setav intelligence NEW_VALUE
player.setav agility NEW_VALUE
player.setav luck NEW_VALUE
Close the console. The S.P.E.C.I.A.L. values should have changed.

Generally, stat changes are shown in the pipboy when you close the console, not before that!

Then, set your new skills values. These range from 0 to 100.

For that, switch to your skills view on the pipboy so you can see them.

Then open the console again.
Code:
player.setav barter NEW_VALUE
player.setav bigguns NEW_VALUE
player.setav energyweapons NEW_VALUE
player.setav explosives NEW_VALUE
player.setav lockpick NEW_VALUE
player.setav medicine NEW_VALUE
player.setav meleeweapons NEW_VALUE
player.setav repair NEW_VALUE
player.setav science NEW_VALUE
player.setav smallguns NEW_VALUE
player.setav sneak NEW_VALUE
player.setav speech NEW_VALUE
player.setav throwing NEW_VALUE
player.setav unarmed NEW_VALUE
The changes should be observable on your pipboy as soon as you close the console.

Now you want to level up again, of course. To do that, set your level and your xp down.

Provided a console is open, type
Code:
player.setlevel NEW_LEVEL
Now close the console and look at the upper right of your console -- you can see the XP boundaries for your new level there. The XP isn't adjusted automatically, you need to set it by hand so that it fits the level. Simply set it below the level boundary by subtracting XP.

To do that, open the console and type
Code:
player.rewardxp NEW_XP
NEW_XP is a negative value!
It is in fact TARGET_XP (the XP that fit your new level) minus CURRENT_XP (the XP you had before fucking with the values).

For example, if you want to get the correct XP for level 9 and level 9 ends at 5500 (don't know whether that's actually true) and you had 12500 XP before messing stuff up, your NEW_XP would be less than 5500-12500, which is -7000.

Be aware of the fact that you'll run into big problems if you do this!

For example, less strength means you can carry less. And less agility means your sneaking won't be as effective.

And worst of all, instances you've visited for the first time as a high-level character before adjusting the numbers won't level down! They'll have the same badasses as before!

There are more problems, some less obvious than these, so if you find the game has become unplayable now, just load the save you made before messing things up.

In any case, this is by far better than raising the levelcap because, as I said before, a risen levelcap means you'll just become more overpowered.
thanks!!!!

Wolfgang died near the Canterbury Commons. Fucking Mr.Gutsy killed him :/ . I loved all the junk he sold... I wish merchant would become incapacitated instead of being outright killed. I wonder if Bethesda knew this scenario with merchants would occur in game and if they wanted it to be like this? It does sort of add an unpredictability to the game.

if you have the PC version you can set them to Essential

Just when I thought the game couldn't be any more buggy. WTF, I CAN'T FINISH THE FUCKING GAME!!!!
Fucking piece of shit Liberty Prime robot keeps sitting there and not walking all the way to Jefferson Memorial. FUCK!!!! I've restarted over and over and over again. I got him to walk to the final energy barrier, but he just stands there with his thumb up his ass.

That happened to me too right after the first barrier so I just jumped into the water and continued fighting. I eventually went back after I cleared away all the Enclave forces and Liberty Prime started moving again.

I'm at the final barrier that surrounds the entrance to the Jefferson Memorial. Can I swim around that one? I looked everywhere and killed just about every Enclave I could find.

I actually didn't try swimming into Jefferson Memorial. I'd try fast traveling somewhere, fast travel to the Irradiated Metro and then walk back to Jefferson. Maybe that'll kickstart Liberty Prime.

This may have been mentioned earlier, but I assume I am right in thinking that trophy patch for this game will not be retroactive, correct? I would like to think from a coding standpoint it wouldn't be that hard to figure out. The quest log keeps pretty good track of everything. But I'll probably end up playing this game again eventually as a good character since I basically threw myself down the moral staircase in the course of about 2 hrs.

What's that last armor in the pics Elbrain posted? It's like some badass version of the Enclave armor

Yeah eventually when you keep fighting the Enclave in Downtown they are going to be wearing it, I saved it all the way and now I am using it haha! Still like the Mechanist armor look more.:D

I got all 3 for level 20. Saved right before I got it and then went back to Megaton and did the secret where you look at Moriarty's terminal -- I saw on here that you never get attacked for it and that is true. Took a little while (saved again once I got to neutral), but it was worth it. :D I'll do the same the next time through for the other two achievements... probably will try and stick to neutral and lower myself to bad.

Are there any more issues with the PS3 version of Fallout 3? Although I have both systems, I'm getting this for the PS3. Besides DLC, am I missing out on anything substantial?

No. If you don't care about DLC, you'll be fine.

Just finished it. Calling that thing an ending would be generous, they clearly rushed it so they could get the game out this year, what a letdown. I kind of bolted through towards the end because I got tired of having good karma and wanted to start a new game as an asshole. Enjoyed it a lot but man does Bethesda need some better writers. So many missed opportunities, like
the quest where you return to Vault 101, that should've been a big fucking deal to all the vault dwellers that you came back, but they're all "meh"
.

Glad that third DLC pack will continue the game.

Obsidian are better writers overall. I think they generally write better characters too. Bioware is better with romances and pulling off big megatwists though. Compare KotOR and KotOR II

Umm yes, the way you came in. Why are you having problems? Make sure to have your flashlight on, it can get pretty dark

I've got a new laptop today with these speccs:
AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core ZM-80, ATi Radeon 3450 HD and 3 gb ram.

I'm wondering how Fallout 3 will run on this system? They have a great deal on it at a local shop here and i really want to play it.

Where is a good place to get bullets?

I hate these fucking FireAnts with a passion and I keep running out of bullets when I'm knee deep in ants. :/

Nope, still runs well for me. :D

The best weapon for that quest IMO is the Hunting Rifle.

About ammo, besides the random traders, try Craterside Supply in megaton.

Containers. Pick lots of locks. Get Scrounger. Dont do Those! early on.

Steal everything, then sell it

Help, I'm stuck in "Finding the Garden of Eden" on the 360.

I'm in Little Lamplight. I've spoken to everybody. When I go to the gate leading to Vault 87, it's closed. I can't open it with the levers. The Princess is there, but does nothing. I've spoken to her but there is no dialog option for her to open the gate. I've also located a terminal near a reactor door, supposedly leading into the Vault too. When I try to use it, it says "Terminal not powered" or something similar. I've spoken AGAIN with everyone and no new options. What am I doing wrong? Is the quest bugged?

I think I might have screwed up at the beginning and won't be able to do one of the side quests

I killed Amata's father while I was leaving vault 101 in the beginning because I saw him beating on Amata. Now I was reading something else about the "Trouble on the Homefront" side quest where it says I need to help Amata with her father. Since he's already dead I take it I can't complete this sidequest. Am I right?

I think I read that you can still do it. Her father is replaced with a new Vault chief

No, you can still do it when the time is right, don't worry.

Landmines are your friends. They'll cripple their antennae and start attacking everything around them.
