The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

yeah, that was pretty disappointing.
the big robot was epic, but the one shot kill "last boss" was fail
. oh well, it makes it up with all the side quests you can do and explore.

I don't mind Autum going down easily. He's human and he isn't wearing any Power Armor.
I wish there was a more challenging gauntlet run though. If Liberty Prime doesn't freeze somewhere, he makes the final mission too easy.

I've sunk at least 15 hours into this game the past two days since school ended. There is almost too much to explore, but I'm quite enjoying it.

They should have put Autumn in power armour for that last fight and give him heavy weapons as well.
Final fights should always be one of the hardest as well as extended, epic things.

i agree, it shouldve been more epic than that.

and the last choice was weak. they should've made it that if you choose to make the girl push the buttons, that you can move on and persist in the world and do all the other quests. this would've made the decision have more of a 'gamer' meaning. do you want the good ending? well you have to die. do you still want to move on and do all the side quest? well, have the girl die for you. AND at that time i had the big brute as my side kick, soooo he can go to a highly radiated area to pick up GECK for me but he cant push 4 damn buttons?. i asked him but all he said was, 'this is your destiny, you have to do it'. aight man.

Is there any explanation in-game why
Colonel Autumn and the traitor Project Purity scientist were still alive after getting irradiated at the Jefferson Memorial? I know it's stated on the web they used some super-duper Rad-Away the Enclave had, but I didn't see any evidence for this in the game. There isn't even a dialogue option to react to seeing them alive again after watching them die. Really, really sloppy writing.

We should be able the continue after the ending either way.
Choose the good ending and you become a ghoul. Choose the bad ending and you remain human

It shouldn't work that way. Ghouls were created by long-term exposure to low levels of radiation. Exposure to a large dose of radiation should just kill you. Moira Brown's transformation into a ghoul contradicts the canon.

Just finished up. I'll go ahead and echo the too easy point; the whole game is too easy unless you're talking about the beginning of the game, on a non min-max set up on a harder difficulty.

I think I had an E-MIRV (64 mini nukes, so 8 shots), 20 nuka grenades, Vengeance, Eugene... overkill much? I will say that the ol E-MIRV can take care of a Vertibird and its crew rather nicely.

The amount of backup you receive in the last mission is simply ridiculous. I think you could beat this game at a very, very low level.

The Lyon's Pride back you up as you go to GNR, and you don't even have to go to GNR, you could just skip directly to the garage. That leaves Jefferson Memorial, Vault 87, and River Rock as the only areas full of baddies you have to engage, with only the last one being solo. For the others, you can have Charon and Dogmeat and possibly someone else.

I too was irritated by the ending:
Charon and Fawkes, by their very nature, could step up to the plate and save the day with no ill effects.

Either I am doing something wrong or this is the buggiest game I have ever played.

I JUST started the game, the first time I made it to the GOAT test and the test never appeared and I just sat there.

So I restarted, the second time I could only turn right, not left...

third time is the charm I guess.

It's all about the naughty nightwear!!!

I've gotten to the point where the game is way too easy now with max level and certain stats. Except for hordes of deathclaws, I can pretty much run over anything. I rarely have less than 300 ammo for all weapons and stimpaks are well above 100. Still have tons of places to explore and things to do. The game isn't close to being over.

Are you playing on PC? It certainly doesn't look like it, but some people use their big tellys for PC gaming as well, so I don't know..

If you DO play on PC, consider downgrading your character via cheating:

Liberty Prime
They should've made it an optional backup for "scientific" characters, with a quest to reactivate it. Computer logs and the NPCs give you hints that the robot needs some tinkering, but you never have to do anything with it. What a letdown.
For "diplomatic" PCs, being impossible to repair LB, you should've been able to get the Outcasts to join the BoS again to fight against a common enemy (the Enclave). Another wasted opportunity for a good quest.
And these are not the only missed opportunities I've found in the game.

The ending: I assume we all agree about Fawkes...

And I was disappointed by the ending video sequence too:
I mean, yes, it's good to see that it reflects what have you done, but why did they choose to use only a few spoken phrases and a "generic" slideshow? Am I the only one who's interested in what happens to the cities and the locations I've visited?
Arcanum and the other Fallouts did it a lot better. And it doesn't seem it requires a big effort to accomplish that. Just choose 8 or 10 locations, write 2 or 3 "glimpses into the future" for each one and get Ron Perlman to read them.

As you said, it seems that
he injects himself with an "Enclave only" version of Rad-X (or Radaway). But that's just a supposition, 'cause you see him doing something before collapsing. I, too, have never found written/spoken evidence nor the "special" chem itself, so you have to use your imagination to cover this plot hole.

I just started the game tonight (LTTP I guess). I'm two hours in and already it has become apparent that the voice acting in this game is just as horrible as it was in Oblivion - even Liam Neeson is a bad voice actor, it seems.

I thought it was hilarious listening to him talk as a black man. Especially since he has a negroplasty between the birth scene and the infant stage.

Yep. 360 version. Though I have a PC that can run anything out there with ease I prefer the 360 pad plus I tend to surf while I'm playing a single player game.

Any one met a raider that won't attack? I'm staring one in the face and though the font is red, she's just sitting there staring at me. :lol

finally opened my copy and started playing, pretty damn good so far. my only concern is that I'll have no real incentive to do the side quests and blow through the game. they seem kind of boring so far..oh! go deliver this for me! anyway, i have no idea how hacking works. how the heck do I even enter a password, I can only select the words on the list of gibberish

The words are the possible passwords. If you select one, it'll tell you how many letters you got right, then you use that info to select a different one, etc. You only get 4 tries though.

There are also some secret bracket things within the gibberish that give you an extra try or delete one of the incorrect words. Basically if you move the cursor over the gibberish and it selects more than one character, go ahead and press X/A.

The sidequests are way better than the boring, five-hour long main story.

I didn't know you could wipe out a bad try or delete incorrect words, but to be clear it tells you if the letters OR POSITION is wrong. Once you realize that position matters in the count as well, it becomes pretty easy. Just go for the words that have a lot of common. Usually you have a bunch of words with the same ending like ing or ed, etc.

Towards the end you can usually remove all the duds and then some.

Which is overkill, of course, because you just need to remove all but four possibilities.

I didn't know that, thanks. I haven't done a whole lot of computer hacking, my character isn't made for it. The only reason I know out about how you can wipe out dud words and stuff is because I was reading the manual one day and it says it there. I did try it though and it works.

Not true. The additional on screen characters have the ability to up the default amount. Though it's random, mirror characters like "()", and + signs for instance can do everything from delete your last wrong choice to reset the counter totally. Giving you more choices.

Also, you can always just back out after three tries and get a fresh shot at a different set of codes.

edit:
Beaten.

In any case, started playing about a week ago and I'm enjoying it for the most part. Didn't know about the level 20 cap though, so my character while dominant, isn't as fleshed out as I would've liked. Eh.

..and on that point, since I've reached the max level, every fight since has felt entirely pointless and I often find myself just sneaking/running past things entirely. :/

Start over with a new character. Now that you know the system, you'll be able to make someone far more interesting.

It's nearly 2am and I was just skimming the thread, so I missed it.

Though if you didn't contradict yourself in the first place with the first part of the post, I wouldn't have even bothered to reply about it.

Yeah, I'll probably end up doing that.

On the plus side, I can pick up the Animal Friend Perk this time around. That way I don't have to do the same boring animal fights over and over. :lol According to the Wiki, it doesn't seem to work against Radscorpions though. *shakes fist*

It doesn't. Doesn't work on bloatflies either. However, it will cause wild dogs and those crazy mutated bears to attack the scorps at level 2. So you can sit back and watch the show.

I didn't contradict myself if you take the entire post as a whole. Under normal circumstances, you get 4 tries. If you use the secret gibberish things, you can get more.

What are the gibberish things?

These patterns. Highlight the open bracket, open parenthesis, etc.

[....]
(....)
<....>

The jibberish will be the random string of characters found all around the possible passwords. Look for the patterns above and select them in order to remove dud passwords or possibly restore your number of guesses.

Finished the game out of boredom with my energy/small gun hero of the wasteland. Even on Very Hard, I was owning everything with a plasma rifle and combat shotty.

Re-rolled a evil Black Widow treasure hunter/killer using unarmed/explosives/big gun and started hunting down all the unique weapons/armor.

Changing my tactics to get up close and personal to pummel enemies or setting up mine traps made the combat more satisfying for me, nothing feels better than taking out a group of enemies without shooting a gun. I feel like Wolverine using a Deathclaw Gauntlet as my main weapon of death :D

I'm seven hours in and I can't understand how some people can argue against Fallout 3 feeling like Oblivion 1.5. Seriously, how is it different?

I loved Oblivion, by the way.

If I ever replay the game, I'm definitely choosing Melee as a main skill just so I can use the Deathclaw as my main weapon.

Killed the Red Ant Queen
intended to get my reward from the scientist first, then go back and kill the queen, but I messed up and killed her first due to mistakenly saving
, and so I killed the scientist too.

Long story short, I left the metro tunnel and ended up face to face with a Merc, very little health, and even less ammo. :lol
Caught a Merc on fire before ducking back into the metro station.

Now I'm trapped indefinitely unless I can find another rout out the metro tunnel. Yay!

I have a question for you guys: which is more fun in your opinion, playing as a good guy or as a bad guy? I want to get the most out of this game, because I'm only going to go through it once.

You'll be fine, there is another exit. i don't know from which one you originally came from, but the 2nd one for me lead to the metro church or something. On that exit there is a good chance to catch a brotherhood vs super mutant fight though.

Bummer, ran into an apparent common bug on Head of State... seems like I can't get the achievement now. :(

Ahh cool, just kept waiting/sleeping and eventually they spawned back by the NW Mall. Achievement get!

Play it twice. (I guess Bad would be more fun, but I'm rolling Good first.)

Is killing Roy Phillips bad karma? From what I can see, he's likely to kill a bunch of innocents if I help him break in.

I think you wont get bad karma if you provoke that bigot son of a bitch.

Its really funny how taking him down began my descent to the dark side, I killed him and the rest of the ghouls, then killed Alistair (although that gave me good Karma), then heard Three Dog calling me an asshole over the radio so I killed him too, then the Brotherhood tried to kill me as I was leaving, next thing you know,
im putting some slave collar on a kid.

Holy crap, you can do that? :lol

Yeah, since I messed up talking Mr. Ling into a peaceful solution, I'm like "screw this quest" and just killed Tenpenny for the good Karma. I decided to go to Vault 112 instead.

Why does everyone hate the ending? I liked it.
Endings are touchy with people. I'm still not sure why I'm supposed to hate the end of Bioshock. It's not a top-notch ending, but damn are some people still angry about it *shrugs* Haven't seen FO3 ending yet though, I actually just got it two days ago.
Holy shit I love this game!!!!!! I really liked Oblivion but I had some issues with the lvl system and combat. It feels like they took all the things I loved about Oblivion and took nothing I hated. I felt the opening was really profound; It felt like it took a bit too long but it makes you feel much more connected to the character. I hadn't read anything about the new combat, so it took me a few minutes. LOL The first thing I did was go into empty house that you start next to and talked to the junkie lady. When I tested out the VATS I took her head right off here body LOL! I had no idea there was this kind of dismemberment and blood, I laughed for 5 minutes straight after the slow-mo shot of her head bouncing into the next room. I'm only at lvl 7 and I;ve done mostly story quests. I can't wait to just start roaming for what the hell I can find, that was the best part of Oblivion to me (dungeon diving). It's so good I'm already thinking about how I'm going to play the next time I go through it. I'm duping it all into Big guns, stealth and lockpicking. So far, not bad. I want to try maxing out melee barter and speech next time I play.

Endings are overrated anyway. I didn't mind the ending myself, but I'm not gonna have 10 slightly worse minutes ruin my awesome 86 hours of gameplay that went before.

Dechaios said:

I feel that
the ending went against everything the game was about up until that point. In both the game and in the advertising, it was choice that was stressed; you can choose to blow up Megaton, you can choose to let the ghouls in Tenpenny Tower, etc. Then the ending comes around and all of the sudden you're forced to "follow your destiny", as Fawkes so eloquently puts it. You have all of these tools at your disposal that can get you through that radiation, and at the very least Fawkes could do it for you, but no, you're forced to waltz in there and enter the code. Then there's the little slide show at the end showing the after effects, which is nothing more than a generic fly through of a few instances, something I think Fallout 1 and 2 did much better. The ending and the whole main quest after Tranquility was a big disappointment for me. It's still a great game in spite of the main story, largely because of the world it creates and the story that you create in it.

Top Bottom
