The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

The game froze twice in my 30 hour playthrough.

I just completed it. Absolutely brilliant game.

Hm, ok. I think I may get the PC version, since I prefer most of my first person games like that with a mouse keyboard, even though trophies do sound tempting!

ok I just finished Orange Box (Half Life 2, Ep 1, and Ep 2) and now I'm playing Fallout 3. My last bethesda game was Oblivion... I played through shivering isles a couple weeks ago.. and there's just something missing from Fallout 3 that Oblivion had in spades.. Fallout is a depressing game, man.. really.. and it's far harder than oblivion... and there's no magic... I know.. I'm an old D&D geek.. so the lack of magic is very obvious to me. Also, while I'm exploring the environments, I find there's such a lack of stuff to explore.. I can be running around for 10 minutes literally, and I don't see anything.. Maybe the game will get better.. I'm not sure.. I'll keep playing, because I love Bethesda and I love this type of game, but for me it has been a huge step back from Oblivion in these first 10 or 15 hours.

10 minutes? I think you missed the fact that the small see-through arrows on you compass point you towards undiscovered locations.

the 'rock-it launcher' schematic, is the only way to get it from the lady in Megaton or can I get it elsewhere?

From the Fallout Wiki:

* Can be bought off Moira Brown in Megaton for a price of 799–1200 bottlecaps (depending on Barter skill level).
* In the armory of Rivet City, located in the ship's bridge tower.
* Can also be bought from the traveling merchant Crazy Wolfgang.
* Another copy of the schematics can be found in the "Framed Quote" within Vault 101.

What kind of damage does it do? Isnt there a robot guard protecting the armory?

I got the alien gun but I want to save it for the end, the plasma rifel is not bad either. I started off very evil (blew up megaton) but now I'm very good so I want to keep that karma high.

From what I understand the rock-it launcher is really not all that spectacular. There's always something more useful you can buy when you have the money and at later levels you should be walking around with one of (or all of them, in my case) the
Xuan Long, Lincoln Repeater, Combat Shotgun
anyhow.

You can tell the robot guarding the armory that there is an emergency outside and once it leaves it will give you enough time to go in and get it.

Yeah, i was very disappointed with the rock-it launcher. Used it for a little while, but then the novelty wore off. I think with a Big Guns build it'd be a bit better, but having the weight for ammo and constantly manually reloading get a bit out of hand.

Okay, I just got this game as a gift, and since I never play RPGs of any kind, I'm totally clueless with this game. I'm sure these questions are incredibly obvious to some of you, but I'm used to games where the only object is to kill everything on the screen.

1. First, how to I get caps? Are they only available as rewards, or can I find them around the game world?

2. Secondly, where's the best place to get more guns/ammunition? I've only ventured a bit further than Megaton, but already some of the molerats and mutant dogs are causing me to waste what little ammo I currently have.

3. Lastly (for now), how exactly do I raise my stats for lockpicking, speech, melee combat, small guns, etc? I'm finding it tough to persuade people in speech or even unlock easy doors (they are always displayed in red).

Sorry for the really stupid questions, but like I said, I'm not usually an RPG guy, so this stuff is kind of confusing to me. I'm hoping to enjoy the game once I get a hang of things. :D

1. Loot stuff and sell it. Best way to get caps in the early levels. Kill a raider, loot his armor and weapons. Sell em. Keep the ammo.

2. I got most of my guns and ammo from looting. I do buy ammo occasionally, but my main supply was looting off raiders. The only times I really buy guns is if I need to do a repair.

3. Raise your stats through levelling, and there are books and bobbleheads that will also help raise those skills.

Do moria's survival quest guide in megaton(supply store). once you're done with it you'll have money and good xp. plus it'll give you a hand on where to go next instead of aimless exploring

1. get caps by selling what you loot. repair it to get more caps.

2. try the super mart near megaton for some quick armor/ammo.

All I can suggest is to keep playing. I was SUPER disappointed in the first few hours--coming up against my first invisible wall, exploring the DC area via horribly repetitive and boring subway tunnels...I really thought that I was going to end up hating the game

Uhmm... I'll give the game few more hours then.
It's just difficult to play something you're not enjoying when you have so many hopefully more enjoyable games waiting for you in the backlog.

But I really wanted to like this game, and after reading your post I'll give it another chance after yesterday night uberdisappointmeton

Can someone explain the perks to me?

1.You choose them at each level and the ones chosen stay with you throughout the game right?

2. Daddy's Boy and Gun Nut, for example, can be chosen multiple times. Does that mean after I choose one of them twice, I get double the bonus or something? Does the amount I can choose the same perk have to do with "ranks available"?

You only get the skill points once, so you can buy more levels to get more skill points. You don't get skill points from them at each level up.

I think the Bethseda ruins are one of the best places to farm equipment. The Raider with the Flamer in the east building respawns with a Big Guns book. A sniper also respawns as well. Fully repaired Raider armor can get you some decent scratch as well.

cool, thanks!

finally listened to the last twenty minutes of the 1up yours from about two weeks ago, and they reminded me that the anchorage dlc is coming soon. does anyone know if your character and stats carry over? or is it clean slate?

From what I understand its like Vault 112, so it could carry over your skills and stats, but it might not :O I'm hoping that it will.

Another good area is the Jury Street Metro Station. A group of 4 Talon mercs will respawn. I think two of them have Laser Rifles in decent condition.

Just a quick question... I've been hanging onto almost every item I pick up in hopes that it'll come in handy sometime soon... that hasn't been the case for about 90% of the items I've been holding so...

Bonesaw
Camera
Carton of Cigarettes
Conductor
Forceps
Hammer
Large Whiskey Bottle
Leather Belt
Pack of Cigarettes
Paint Gun
Radscorpion Poison Gland
Sensor Module
Steam Gauge Assembly
Turpentine
Wonderglue
Wrench

Which of these items should I hang onto and which should I just sell right now? Or am I placing far too much potential value into any of them and I should just sell them all?

Bonesaw - Useless
Camera - Useless
Carton of Cigarettes - Useless
Conductor - Needed to make something
Forceps - Useless
Hammer - Useless
Large Whiskey Bottle - Useless
Leather Belt - Needed to make something
Pack of Cigarettes - Useless
Paint Gun - Needed to make something
Radscorpion Poison Gland - Needed to make something
Sensor Module - Needed to make something
Steam Gauge Assembly - Needed to make something
Turpentine - Needed to make something
Wonderglue - Needed to make something
Wrench - Useless

But unless you have a place to store that stuff, just dump it, it's useless until you have the schematics to make weapons.

Edit: If you're obsessive about keeping the "useful" items, but you don't have a place to store it all, I would suggest you find a nice corner in Megaton where you can just drop it all and come back to get it if you ever need it.

Edit: Damn you 1cesc :lol
I typed more and you still took 5 minutes longer :^P

Bolded items are useless, keep the rest, you need them for the weapon schematics.

Cigarettes aren't "useless" they're "vendor trash."

In other words, keep them, sell to Moira or whoever. Only drop / ignore the cigarettes if you're full on loot that is otherwise more valuable in terms of price per pound, which isn't very many things (weapons in good repair, especially big guns / energy weapons).

But then again, I finished the game with 20k caps I couldn't really do anything with, so hey.

You can sell them all because they are basically all over the game.

Besides, IMO custom weapons are pretty useless in this game, except dart gun maybe. Those named guns are way more powerful than your home made weapons and they can be repaired easily.

Nice! Thanks so much guys.

Now that brings me to a second question... let's say I store all of those useful items somewhere in Megaton for now... will they stay there for the rest of the game until I come back to retrieve them (unless of course
you take the optional quest to blow up Megaton that is)
?

Haha, check out my edit, I just added that in.

Nuka grenade is the most powerful explosive in the game.
Bottlecap mine is the most powerful mine in the game.
Dart gun is awesome throughout the entire game.
Shiskebab is awesome throughout the entire game.
Deathclaw gauntlet ignores DR entirely, so if you have the right perks, it will be awesome throughout the entire game.

Railway Rifle and Rock-it Launcher are only good at the beginning of the game.

So custom weapons = awesome.

* * *

Edit: You can't store items anywhere other than in your house and expect them to stay, so blow up or save Megaton early on.

:lol Just what I was thinking. But can I only drop them on the ground then? Would it hurt if I stored them in a locker, box, chest, etc.?

And thanks again for all the replies fellas. :D

Railway Rifle makes me giggle like a schoolgirl every time I fire it outside of VATS.

That's worth more than any mere statistic.

Yeah, besides, the Railway Rifle (minus the bugginess), Shishkebab and Rock-It Launcher are fun as Hell to use.

Hmm, I did not know this, I used to store stuff in Craterside Supply for 48+ hours and it's was still there.

Store them in containers. I've yet to see a container in this game lose items. It doesn't matter what container. I've had items in a nuka cola machine for like 60 hours and they're still there.

At the beggining of the game I tried to pick up and store almost anything because I was just running out of ammo and caps, but after a while I'm swimming in both, once you start selling the pre-war books and use ammo as money (i use small guns, so I get a ton of money selling the big weapons I find or the laser weapons) keeping cigarettes for sale it's not worth imo.

Damn this game keeps delivering. 2nd time through, this time as a good-aligned character (I'm naturally evil/selfish so the first play-through was awesome but didn't feel like I got the whole experience :lol ) However, I will second the notion that once you reach 20 the reward for exploration is a tad diminished. Any word on a mod that will raise the cap without breaking the game?

DLC will raise the cap to lvl 30, not sure if the first DLC or the second ..

So how often do you guys just load the previous save file when you’ve made a decision you regret, even if it is just saying something out of character to an NPC?

Oh shit son, I'm in Fallout 3! :lol

This may have been answered, but do we know yet how the DLC is going to work? Standalone episodes or does it integrate into your current game?

Integrate into your game as far as I know. With the Anchorage Alaska DLC, it'll show up on your pipboy as another quest. With the third one, it'll continue on with the main story.

I think the first two DLC packs will be "Simulations" as they recount stories from the start of the war it seems with the third DLC pack giving you a new quest, bug fixes and enabling you to continue playing after the main quest finishes.
