The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

This might seem weird, as I know very little about this game, but I think I want to get it. However, I have one question. I'm not a very big fan of the whole first person perspective, but I've seen screens and videos of characters running in third person.

How does this work? Can you play the whole game, fighting and all, in third person?
You can, but it's not recommended. Unless you use VATS, combat in 3rd person is terrible. But the game isn't meant to be played like an FPS anyway.

Playing in 3rd person is pretty bad. It doesn't allow you to see too much and is not what you expect from a 3rd person view. Your best bet is sticking to 1st person.

Oh, yeah. I had searched HH, but I couldn't find anything. So I'm looking for some kind of pool? I don't remember any water in there, just a buch of narrow hallways of rock.

No, HH itself is near a pond (but it sounds like you found the place!), IIRC the cache is way way way in the back of HH through a big utility tunnel then behind a chain link gate into an alcove in the bare rock.

So today I finished up the quest "Those!" (I hated it, the ants creeped me out) and at the very end, after I finished kill the nest guardians I was on my way out of the cave and the fucking queen ant somehow bugged out (pun intended) and teleported like RIGHT in front of my face. It scared me so much, I booked it so fast out of there. This game is great but I've experienced my fair share of bugs (another intended pun).

That happened to me as well, very unsettling :lol

Damn, I just murdered and robbed the
caravan trader near Rivit City
, I can't believe I didn't do this before! That guy and his two-headed cow had tons of loot! :lol

If megaton is still intact for you, do Moria's survival guide quest. she's in the supply store. she'll give you a couple of quests, tell you were to go, and those places are good for xp, loot, and she'll give you rewards too. Do the optional sections of her quests for stat boosts in the end.

Thanks for the advice.

I killed the caravans in my first playthrough and let them live in my second. Keeping them alive didn't have much of an effect on my playthrough so I'd recommend killing the weapon and armor caravans as soon as you're able. Flak and Shrapnel in Rivet can fill anyone's ammo needs.

Finished it on PS3. Excellent story and game, though I'm pretty sick of tunnels and caves now. Also, the graphics hurts my eyes sometimes (the rocks, dirt, mountains - though considering the game's setting, it's actually pretty apt)

Marching towards the reactor with the giant robot was fucking cool

I think I would have found the story more involving if they didn't use this damn faceless character 1st person storytelling, put the player in the character's shoes thingy (Halflife, Bioshock...). Doesn't really work for me.

I end up like this:
'your' father sacrificed himself - me: :/
'you' sacrificed yourself - me: :/

so my pre-trophy patch save just gave me a trophy for completing "waters of life" quest. does this mean that this games vulnerable to exploiting the trophies by downloading a bunch of saves right before completing said trophies?

Great you just killed one of the best repairers in the game and one of the best traders in the game, especially if it was Crow or Lucky

So I, uh, met the Deku Tree. After talking with some of the kokiri loons, I now have three options on completing this quest. I'm leaning more towards respecting the trees' wishes, but am not sure...

Neither one of them is essential as long as you have high repair which should be mandatory for every character.

There are a few items though that are very hard/impossible to repair yourself. The custom made weapons are an utter bitch to self repair.

do what the tree wants, you get a perk for it

Same with rare items like snipers and Fat mans, or the rare power armors, or fast degrading weapons that are only common in certain areas, like the terrible shotgun. Plus its a waste not to invest in them first. Their inventory would actually be worth killing for after 700 caps

I guess I never ran into that problem because I rarely used the custom weapons. On my 2nd playthrough, I pretty much used the Wazer Wifle and Lincoln's Repeater exclusively.

Okay, just got the game, having fun, question time:

Just got out of Vault 101 (no spoiler there) and found the elementary school.
Can I go further than a little ways down to the ants area? I mean, I killed all the raiders in the school, and all the ants, but there is this ledge that looks like I should be able to jump it, but the fucking guy won't grab the damn ledge and pull himself up. Can I actually do anything there or is that just the end of the school?

Thanks!

you can't grab onto ledges so that's probably it

you can also check your local map and see

haven't been to the school since the beginning of my first play through so I don't remember.

May have to tone down my video settings a bit for the game, I left an area to go outside and it started chugging horribly. :/

How does VATS work for you? I tried playing on my laptop and it ran fine with a large outdoor draw distance (the auto-detect gave me "very high" quality settings), but as soon as I try to VATS someone the thing hits 3 fps. Seems like a really odd thing to cause such slowdown.

It works ok for the most part, though just a little slowdown. I just remember exiting the school to go outside, and the thing just felt like it was about to freeze and shutdown on me.

Newb here.

Where is the Family?

I checked the subway station and there are a couple of drug dealing ghouls, Hamiltons Hide had 12 Radscorpions and two Raiders. What am I missing?

Also the GNR Plaza?

I am halfway downtown fighting Super Mutants tooth and nail and am running into wall after wall,
was I simply supposed to take the subway station to the first stop?

In the place with the

there should be a sewer entrance.

1UP did an interview with Emil Pagliarulo recently. Not too much meat, but one of the bigger questions was answered, which I'll post here in spoiler tags. Needless to say, the interview itself is pretty full of spoilers.

1UP Somewhat related to that: Why are companions not an option for inputting the Project Purity code? You already have the option to have Sentinel Lyons input the code in your place. There are three viable options for an alternate to input the code: Fawkes, Sergeant RL-3N, and Charon. The player has already experienced a situation where Fawkes can enter an irradiated room and perform a task, RL-3N should follow his programming to obey you, and Charon would not only become healthier due to the radiation, but he's established as essentially a slave who will do whatever his contract-holder orders him to do. To the player, the inability for either to input the code seems really contradictory.

EP: That's a great question, and one that's obviously come up quite a bit in different forums. Let me try to shed some light on why the game is like that -- it's a pretty interesting look inside the development process.

All of the followers were implemented into the game fairly late in development, after the main story had already been nailed down. So, you know, we had the scene at the end of the game, with deadly radiation, and never really compensated for the fact that you could have a Supermutant, or Ghoul, or robot, who could possibly turn the purifier on for you. We'd only ever planned for you sending Sarah Lyons into the purifier, because we knew, from a story standpoint, that she'd definitely be in there with you.

What we could do -- and what we did ultimately do -- is cover that stuff in dialogue. You can ask those followers to go into the purifier, and they'll tell you why they won't. We felt that fit with their personalities, but really, they didn't "sell" that to the player in a single line of dialogue. So, in the end, the player's left with a, "Huh, why the hell can't they do it?!" sort of feeling.

So the story does kind of break down. But you know what? We knew that, and were OK with it, because the trade-off is, well, you get these cool followers to join you. You meet up with Fawkes near the end of the game, and it's true you can go right with him to the purifier. So we could've not had him there as a follower, and that would've solved the problem of him not going into the purifier -- because, at that point in development, that was the only fix we had time for. But we kept it, and players got him as a follower, and they seem to love adventuring him with. Gameplay trumped story, in that example -- as I believe it should have.

So if we'd planned better, we could've addressed that more satisfactorily. But considering how it all went down, I feel good about the decision we made there.

Reading that, I get the feeling that a good portion of the team wasn't too happy with the ending as well. Unfortunately, by the time they got to that point the rest of the game and story was so far gone that it would take too much time to rework the story around an improved ending.

Quick question for anyone who has the PC version of this. I am thinking of buying a used copy, but I'm a bit worried about the DRM causing problems. Would the DRM prevent me from installing a used copy, or downloading additional content?

There is no DRM. Nada. Nothing. As far as I know, you wouldn't even need a no-cd crack should you have gotten the game through men-with-small-penis-ish ways.

Am I doing something wrong; I am 40 hours into the game but still find myself dying a lot. I am off of the main quest and am trying to do side quests, but my equipment is constantly running down, I never have enough money, and the sidequests are killing me. I should have upgraded my repair skill early on, it is money-sink. Other than that, though, I feel like my character should be more powerful at this point. I hate wandering on my way to a new quest only to get killed and realizing I haven't saved in 40 minutes. >_<

Constantly sell your loot, if you have 2 of the same thing repair them before you sell them that way you get more caps. Dont hesitate to wait until it gets daytime, it's so much easier when you can see further ahead since the computer has super aim.

Also, make lots of trips back to tenpenny/megaton/rivet....wherever you're selling your items.

What level are you at this point?

I'm a 20, have been for a while, and I'm 82 hours in but the map is just so huge I still havnt discovered all of the areas and done all of the quests. I have 29k caps lol

You probably need a follower too, it helps A LOT.

Dogmeat is shit though. You might want to give a lot of water to one of the bums and get back to neutral karma. That way you can hire that mister gutsy that is near tenpenny tower...an old man is walking around with a bunch of robots to the northwest of the tenpenny tower entrance.

I was very evil at first: blew up megaton, killed the ghouls, but after saving big town and rescuing some slaves I started creeping on up. You can get some really good followers if you have good karma. The best imo

Thanks for the info! That's really good to hear. I was going to pick it up on Steam for $40, but I wanted to be able to sell it after I was done with it. I never play long RPG's more than once since I don't have the time to do so, so the non-DRM will allow me to sell it to a friend or online when I'm done playing it, and save a little money buying it.

Did anyone else do this regarding Tenpenny and the Ghouls?

I spent all this time talking the Tenpenny residents into accepting the Ghouls, visit them later to buy some ammo and find that the Ghouls killed them anyway :lol - I blew Roy's head off to give a little "wasteland justice" for the old residents.

It seems I have broken through the barrier of mediocrity. For the first 35+ hours of this game, I was always on the verge of death. But last night I started turning it around, mostly by killing a few caravans and looting them like crazy. Once I had enough ammo and weapons, I was able to do some bigger missions, and now all the sudden I have 40+ Stimpacks, tons of ammo, tons of cash, etc.

I can't remember another RPG in which it took me 40+ hours to get to the point where I felt 'strong.' Guess I have been picking the wrong perks. :lol

I know exactly how you feel, I'd say it took me around 30 or so. I just take forever doing stuff and I like fully exploring every area and collecting as much as I can.

It's kind of easy now being maxed out but I still love killing people in vats. Shooting off body parts never gets old to me. CANNOT F-ing wait for the 3rd DLC so the level cap is increased =)

Actually
I just killed roy and his gang from the get go. Got some good loot, roy has a chinese assault rifle which was awesome in the beginning of the game. I had my place at ten penny so I didnt want any smelly ghouls up in there lol

are there any other tenpenny missions?

I think figuring out the Ghoul situation is it. I got some nice stuff for the "peaceful" way, though.
Ghoul mask from Roy - ferel Ghouls no longer attack me, and 500 caps from Tenpenny. I got nothing for killing Roy, I just felt guilty for being the indirect cause of the residents being murdered and felt it was the right thing to do, heh.

Game is great, just got it for Christmas. I wasn't sure about it at first since I couldn't get into oblivion at all, but i.m.o. this is way more engaging. Possibly it's because it's based in the city I live in, but it seems like the quest layout and battle system is easier and not as confusing. I was lost in oblivion and think I jacked my character up beyond fixing.

My only complaint so far is when I forget to save after accomplishing a lot of stuff to only fall to my death and have to repeat (if possible, sometimes the NPCs are gone or not there) everything again. It's my fault, I know but couldn't the autosave occur when you reach a town or after let's say 30 minutes?

Dude put the game in auto save, basically after you go through a door or a screen with a loading time you will have the game saved.

So, I've finished the main story line, and all but 2 of the side quests (Shoot 'em in the Head and Strictly Business). I cannot complete Strictly Business as I took an alternative path. Though on Shoot 'em, I've basically
gotten the keys off the pile of Goo that was Mr. Crowley and can head to Ft. Constantine whenever.

My problem is that I'm currently at 41 of 50 Speech Challenges. I need 9 speech challenges. Keep in mind I've done the main quest so I've spoken to all of those folks, and I've also done everyone of the side quests (with the noted exceptions). I didn't really start winning these challenges until late in the game -- which is also funny cuz now I'm running around with
Button's wig and the Naughty Nightware
-- crazy.

If anyone can recommend places (towns I suppose) where I can find speech challenges -- OFF THE NORMAL PATH...I'd appreciate it greatly.

I took the Explorer Perk, so I am aware of all (known) locations -- if there are unknown locations, let me know.

I have the game in autosave already. Sometimes I don't go through a door or loading screen and have still finished part of a quest only to die and have to re-do it again. I'm actually relying on autosave too much, I guess.

Well just make sure you save every 15 mins then if it comes to that. :D

Do it and loot his body for his Sniper Rifle :)
There's a couple of NPCs with names that aren't actually part of any quest they're more like the random events that occur out in the wasteland and he's one of them. He also has a small cache
in a hollow rock in the area he appears, have a look for that too
.

I just hit 50 hours, I am totally addicted to this game. I tried taking a break and playing some LBP, but got bored after 20 minutes and went straight back to Fallout.

I just got the Tesla Armor, can't wait to test it out!

This game is all kinds of fun. I enjoy the setting much more than generic fantasy land of Oblivion. Only complaint I have about the landscape is that there's too many buildings that are just there and can't be explored. There still some of that disconnect between what you do and how the npc's respond. For example
I found that Nuka Cola collecter girl and when her "protector" confronted me I naturally killed him (After giving him his Naughty Nightwear), but the girl doesn't react to it at all.
It's not hard to get past it though when everything else is fun. VATS is completely un-tactical, but it's still just fun to blow someone's head off and the weapons are really good.

What's a good way to get caps? I've been killing a lot of caravan guys and selling their stuff but I still run out of caps all the time.

I hope Tenpenny doesn't give you any good quests later on because I killed him and took his sniper rifle.

I'm about 15 hours in and I doubt I've even scratched the surface on the side quests. On the main quest I
just found your dad and went back to Rivet City.
About how far away from the end of it am I?

I've been trying to find all the named weapons when I finally ran into Drifter at the church. The fucker hit me a few times with his rifle and then he vanished. Did he glitch out of the game or can I find him somewhere else?

I'd say about 1/3 of the way through the Main Quest, maybe a bit more. It felt to me like the main quest had three acts to it and you've just done the first.
