The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Ok.... I'm going to give Fallout 3 one last chance today before I throw it out the window and move onto Dark Sector.

I'm level 4, I've done a few random missions (disarmed bomb, fixed water leaks, done 2 book challenges for Moira, and been to Arefu to find Lucy West's family dead). But I cannot venture into the wasteland as everything seems to kill me. A Mireluke to nearly all of my ammo to get him down (as well as the help of a passing slaver) 3 Mole Rats killed me off, 3 mercs did the same. I have fuck all ammo, my 10mm pistol (which is my best weapon) does 5 damage, there is no ammo to be found in Megaton and now the game wants me to go into DC to the GNR. There is no way I'll survive the journey thanks to my pathtetic ammo count and puny little weapons.

What the fudge? Am I missing something obvious, have I upgraded in all the wrong skills, or am I expected to sneak around the wastelands trying to avoid everything (and if the answer to this is yes then its going on ebay).
Hahaha. Must be something you did wrong, are you even using v.a.t.s? Perhaps you lowered your Small Arms skill? Small Arms are super important, especially at the start.
Also don't fuck with Mirelurks until you're a higher level. They eat bullets for breakfast. A combat shotgun to the face sets them straight though.

I started a new game yesterday. Decided to go bad Karma this time. I killed the overseer and every possible vault guard. I left the vault with 130 bullets. I first headed over to the Springvale elementary where I killed every possible raider and piece of scum. Within 15 minutes of leaving the place I came across some dudes hideout, took his bullets and some other crap. Upon leaving I got shot by the apparent owner. I had a pretty long battle with the dude ( I was level 3) but after killing him I gained an AK47, a Sniper rifle, 3 frag grenades and some leather armor. After that I decided to head to Megaton. On my way I came across a door in a building that I hadn't seen before on my previous play through. Turns out it was a Tallon company hideout. I enter the place and am greeted by 3 pissed Tallon guys. I lob 3 grenades their way and finish their remaining health bars with some AK fire. Looting the place and the corpses earns me a combat shotgun, a laser rifle, three piece of talon armor (fantastic armor to start with), another AK47 and some small weaponry.

I love how every playthrough can be so entirely different.

I was never really starved for ammo (or caps for that matter). I just made sure to really search the environment, sell off unwanted equipment. Except for some sidequests, I hardly touched the mainquest for the first 30 hours. When I decided to do that I was being flooded with ammo. So yeah, a good idea is too really search the environment and do the mainquest if you want better equipment fast.

Yes I'm using VATS
I've trained up in Small Arms (40+)
I'm also trained in medicine (at least I can heal myself)

Just run into Fire Ants in some town by DC, hopefully I can take out a few and get closer to level 5, i'll just have to chuck everything into weapons.

Follow Moira's quest to the super duper mart. Keep low and take out all the bandits, looting their corpses, and claim all the ammo and weapons there. You can also do the same for the school around the same area. At first you need to get the jump on enemies and take them down one at a time, but before long you'll be able to Rambo near everything. Make sure to raise your repair skill. Combining items makes them much more powerful, and also profitable when you sell them.

Just finished the Fire ant quest (I'm only lvl 3), here's a little trick as I ran out of ammo big time:

run around them and melee from behing, when they try to turn keep staying behind them an attacking. They go down fast. I was using like 20+ bullter per before that. There's another trick but the quest will tell you

Holy shit, I can't believe I just came across a Death Claw near Vault 101 at level 5. Scary shit. :lol
At a recent reroll I made, I was ambushed by 6 raiders when coming out of the vault. One of them had a fucking rocket launcher. 2 of them had grenades. That shit was scary.

I'm playing on Xbox 360 and I've done everything necessary to complete the Head of State quest - my final move is to meet everybody at the Lincoln Memorial.

But... they never show up! Is this a known glitch? I reloaded and retried three times, waiting for as long as 19 hours.

Did the recent patch fix problems like this? Seems to be a case of disappearing NPCs. Of course, on a freezing-cold night in Wisconsin, I was unable to GET that patch and enjoy my game due to an Internet outage from my beloved Charter Communications. *grumble*

Anyway, thanks in advance.

Starting to do a bit better now, went to Grayditch and
found Brian Wilk's dead dad, went into the metro system to find the scientist who created the ants, found some naughty nightwear (??) and killed a load of ants. Now at lvl 5 and got myself the Enymologist perk so wild freaky animals aren't quite the bother they used to be.

Just wish I could carry more stuff now...I got loads of junk to sell but bit of a bother to sell any of it when you are underground and on a mission. If I store the items in a locker will they stay there no matter what?

The game is tough at lower levels. By level 8 the challenge evens out and you start to become master of the waste.

I know several people who have various Head of State problems. I would retry when you can download the patch.

For me they took ages to actually walk there but I don't remember how long exactly. If you can't see their location as a quest marker in the Pip-Boy then it looks like it's a bug, there are problems listed on the wiki for that quest and a workaround for PC users but I don't think there is much you could do on 360.

I'm in the same boat, but I tried the ants. They take a ton of ammo to kill and the fire hurts. I like fighting the human better.

The fire ant quest is one of the harder ones. You get the quest at low level and if you do it right away you are in for some tough fights. Any kind of shotgun (combat or sawed off) is your friend when fighting the ants. A couple shells in the face is your most effective strategy. I recommend finding something else to do until you come across that kind of weapon. Doing the ants with a hunting rifle, shitty assault rifle, or your 10mm weapons is going to be painful.

I found a Chinese Assault Rifle in one of the houses which does some nice damage, and the Hunting Rifle ain't too bad either. Laser Pistol also seems pretty good, critical hits seem to do massive damage. And when all else fails I drop mines and get them to chase me, comes in handy in those corridors.

But I have to keep my distance as that fire really sucks the life out of you, and of course more distance = less accuracy :/

I knew something was definitely odd after applying the patch on 360. They added the shaders that were included in the ps3 version, but mysteriously absent from the 360. I had to remove the patch in order to see and prove that I am not crazy!

How very awesome of Bethesda!

Yep, mentioned this a page before. I'm really happy about the fix too. Makes leather clothing and metal look so much better.

I lent the game to my friend and he killed Moriarty in the beginning, how does he advance in the story if he never got any info on his dad from Moriarty?

Haven't done it myself, but has he tried hacking the terminal in Moriarty's saloon, or breaking into the various objects in his office?

Get the ladykiller perk and talk to the whore in Moriarty's bar (can't remember her name atm). That or lockpick the locker next to the terminal. You'll get the password to his terminal which contains information on your father.

You could of course also simply hack his terminal.

I just wanted to send out a big F.U. to all the hyper-negative, half-empty downers on GAF who told me that Fallout was overrated, too short, etc. etc.

I finally picked up the game. WTF? It's incredible.

Forums are ruining gaming. No wonder everyone is jaded.

I'm out.

The 188 pages of this thread are mostly praise and gameplay discussion.

Fallout 3's approach was interesting to watch. Prior to release there was much mad hate, especially from so-called Fallout fan sites. Once the game came up it seemed like a vast majority of those people shut the hell up.

You don't need any info at all. It makes it easier of course, but if you find the right locations you can skip huge parts of the quest.

Just completed the game today.... it was a pretty good experience, but I've always thought that the side quests were more interesting than the main quest. As usual, I feel GAF has really overrated this one.

A gripe about the leveling system though. It was great to see that each level up give a noticeable boost in performance which ups the reward factor, but there are way too few useful perks and the level cap of 20 is ridiculous. I lost interest in exploration and fighting when I reached the level cap, since the feeling of killing and exploring lost a lot of its appeal. The cap should have been around level 30-40, which would really allow the character to be rewarded throughout the entire game. at level 20, it can only be satisfying if you only play through the main quest, which isn't that great anyway.

Don't really think that this is GOTY material though. The game itself isn't really balanced very well, and many aspects are not well thought out, and there are too many useless perks and skills.

Still, had a blast playing

I have the sawed off shotgun, but it seems really hard to get close. Maybe trying to get behind it would work. The quest mentions the antennae, but they are such a small target.

Please post again once you've finished the game.

For a non-linear game such as this, the ending is the least important part for me. Sure, it wasn't as good as it could have been, but I just re-loaded the last save and went back into the wasteland. No biggie. My adventure isn't done yet!

Don't worry. They're going to charge you via DLC for the privilege of leveling up further. In Bethesda we trust.

Started playthrough #2 last night... I tried playing an evil bastard on my first playthrough, but I inadvertently ended up with good karma....

This time, im playing an evil bitch... black widow was the first perk I chose, and I'm set on destroying Megaton this time.

Does destroying megaton net an individual kill for each person there (looking to get the 'Doesn't Play Well With Others' achievement for killing 300 people)? If not, I'm guessing I should just go genocidal on the place before nuking it (plus, it's prob worth killing the children of the atom, just so they don't get the satisfaction of dying by the bomb).

Also, The sheriff marks Rivet City on your map if you choose certain dialog options,
equipping you to bypass the the first 2 big parts of the main quest.

I was wondering what would happen if you leave Vault 101 and head directly to Vault 88 (or whichever Vault that is where you visit Tranquility Lane).

Same thing happened here. this is what i did, try it and it might work for you:

sleep 1 day, then go to the metro entrance to see if they are there.
Repeat for about 8 days.

Took 6 days for me for them to show up. The time i was checking was 11am or so everyday.
Don't wait for them to walk up to the monument, go to the metro station entrance just in case.

Oh, the metro I'm talking about is the one between the Lincoln memorial and the museum of history.

Thanks, I'll try that. Hoping I didn't "break" something earlier on. When I first approached the
Slavers
at the Lincoln Memorial, I had Fawkes with me and obviously, that didn't go over very well. Fawkes opened fire and they returned fire and pretty soon they were all dead.

2 ways you can do this:

1. win speech challenges from the bartender and the hooker and they will give you the password to Moriarty's computer in the back. It has the info you need and it will advance the story(that's what i did. Moriarty disappeared a long time ago on my game). Easy way to win those speech challenges is to save right before and reload if you don't succeed.

2. If your hacking is good enough, go ahead and hack Moriarty's computer.

I was so paranoid about them not showing up I kept traveling from the memorial to where i first met them to make sure they took off. When they were not there and the place was empty I just kept sleeping and checking hoping they would turn up.

The ending was dreadful but the rest was great.

I agree, but the game should come with a warning sticker: "Do not finish main quest". The endgame ruined what was otherwise a great experience - it's just -that- bad.

Just finished it on the PC. I really enjoyed it (although I went in blind).
Went back tonight and played a bunch of the side missions.

Really impressed with the detail of the levels.
A little disappointed in some of the glitches, but otherwise, GREAT game.

OK, I don't know if it was the patch or what, but I booted up last night and completed the quest (and got the achievement) easy.

The group set off for the Memorial immediately and I only had to wait until nearly noon the next day for them to arrive.

Oh, game looks nicer post-update. The lighting difference is subtle, but sweet.

I am doing the quest "Those!" and I just killed off the guardians for the doctor. The doctor now wants me to talk to Bryan Wilks, but I am having trouble finding him. Any ideas?

He's either in his parents house or the shelter thing next to the diner, don't recall exactly.

Like Keen said, I checked the pod that he was usually in first but after looking at the map I'm pretty sure it directed me to his house where I found him laying on a bed.

I finished it yesterday
I've got around 60 hours.
hated the ending. So abrupt. I mean, I knew there was no "happy ending" thing, but dying just because? SUCKS
. Will continue playing a bit more, even tho I'm lvl 20. I really enjoyed it!

can anyone reccomend an interesting build for a second play through? I tried going pure fists but I knew right away that it wasn't going to be for me.

one of my builds was unarmed/small guns and had a blast. paralyzing palm is great; i took out a super mutant behemoth with naked fists without taking any damage. if you go unarmed the deathclaw gauntlet is awesome-- it's quite a few APs, but has great damage with Iron Fist (3) and has a 5x crit multiplier. you can cut through mirelurks like butter.

my current build is melee/demo/big guns and i'm having a lot of fun. i can take down most anything with the shishkebab but throwing out a few grenade volleys (magnified with demo expert) is hilarious.

i'd recommend a demo/melee or unarmed. blowing up shit is awesome, right? i found that unarmed was much more powerful with IF and the deathclaw, but anything melee is still a lot of fun (aim for shishkebab, stabhappy or vampire's edge for primary weapons). oh, and the dart gun is great to have on hand especially when dealing with yao guais or deathclaws in close combat.

edit: don't forget sneak. even with a bunch of stats already maxed i still managed to make sneak 100 as well.

Was it ever found that certain weapon types (energy, regular guns, ballistics, etc.) actually do more damage against certain types of enemies?

Also any decent mods available yet, or is it too early for that?

Beat the game today at 37 hours and only 22% of the Trophies. I guess I should go through it a few more times. Ending was
really abrupt and very "meh" but the voice over from Ron Perlman was okay.
