Here are my impressions from the two hours I've played. I've gotten two of the achievements so far:

-When you get to the area of the DLC sidequest, you first have to help a group of brotherhood outcasts fight off some super mutants. Then you follow them into their base.

-Once you're in the simulator, you have to infiltrate a Chinese base solo. You lose all your stuff, like Tranquility Lane. You're given a silenced 10mm pistol, a knife, a stealth boy, and apparel. The guy with you says you have the option of going stealth or guns blazing. I went stealth until I met up with him again, even after I picked up a Chinese assault rifle.

-After that, you destroy some Chinese weaponry. When you're done, it brings you to the US base for a debriefing. That's where I stopped.

-It's all combat. You fight tons of Chinese soldiers. You also fight some invisible ninjas who remind me of Raiden from MGS4.

-When enemies die, they evaporate, preventing you from searching their corpses.

-You can't pick up as many items laying around as you can in the main game. I'm not sure you can pick up anything non-weaponry actually. For example, I saw a pile of metal scrap, but couldn't pick it up.

-There are red glowing health and ammo re-generators as you go along. They refill both completely and you can use them infinitely. They also seem to always have weapons, grenades and mines next to them.

-It's super linear so far, reminds me of a FPS more then the rest of the game. There are a few side areas to explore, but not a lot.

So far I like it, but I'm curious where the story is going.

EDIT: I remember now that you can pick up holotapes to listen to.

-If you've been through all the vaults, lockpick the room in the outcast base for a fun little aside.

-There are ten briefcases scattered throughout the simulation. Not sure what they'll do if you get them all.

-You can't carry health packs. There are health and ammo stations periodically to replenish your stock.

-Gauss Rifle has limited ammo but packs a pretty mean wallop.

-I didn't have any crashes, but I did have to reload after falling between a staircase and a cliff - twice.

I agree that it's a bit more linear, (Kind of reminds me of Goldeneye with the silenced pistol for some reason.) but I am having fun with it. I wouldn't be surprised if the Pitt is similar to this, but since Broken Steel returns to DC it will probably return to scavenging and the like.
 
Do you have to be logged on to LIVE to play the DLC? I did download it from live, but my character in the game is not tied to the LIVE account, so whenever I boot up LIVE in the game, it starts over with a new game(If I log out, I get my new saves)

You will get the increased level cap right away regardless of the state of the plot.

Saves are tied to a profile and apparently so is the dlc. Sucks

C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Xlive\DLC (Windows XP) C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\XLive\DLC (Windows Vista) If you copy them to your Fallout 3\Data folder, you will be able to play the DLC without activating Games for Windows Live.
 
Wow so the DLC sucks? Well I wish I would have read these impressions instead of blindly buying in anticipation. Maybe ill just wait for the level cap get raised in march an play it then. :(
 
I don't think it sucks from what I've played. It might not be as great as some of the other sidequests in the game, but I like the combat so I am entertained.
 
I think I might skip on this DLC and wait for packs 2+3. My enjoyments of Fallout 3 came from exploring the wastelands and finding all those little settlements and abandoned buildings.

800pts for what sounds like a very combat heavy, FPS-wannabe mode... I'm not sold on it to be honest. :/
 
Does anyone know how high the level cap will be raised? I hit 20 and I still have like 8 or so major quests left to do and I'm interested in the dlc.

It says you get new weapons for the Anchorage dlc and I think I read a new perk as well. Does this carry over back to the main game or is that stuff just for the vr mission?

New level cap will be upped to 30 in the final DLC pack.

Yeah, it carries over in to the main game once you've completed OA.
 
The level cap will be raised to 30 and the stuff will carry over(you get to open a special vault for that stuff)

I still can't find the DLC data on my hard drive...not even the folders. I've treid searching, because I know they're there(when I logg onto live from within F3, is says "patching new content) I downloaded it from the external client, not from within the game so maybe that's the fault.
 
Already bought the DLC before I came into work, and I can't wait to play it tonight. looking forward to something a little bit different. Yes Fallout is good as an exploration game, but I think exploring Alaska should be fun, and new weapons+armor+perk = great success.

You barely get to explore anything unfortunately, but the new environments are pretty decent.
 
I'm a huge fan of FO3, I played it over 100 hours with 3 characters, 1000/1000'd achievements. That said, this DLC was a huge disappointment. I don't think I really have anything to add to the negativity, but paying $10 for two hours of gameplay (maybe 4 if I play through it again with my fourth character after all 3 DLC are out) was pretty ludicrous. Especially considering that the sim aspect of this makes it almost nothing like the actual main game. Basically you're paying $10 to add a really amazing new side quest to the game, with some neat toys at the end, but if you're like me and have already done everything there is to do in the main game, this was totally skipable. Hope I just saved someone $10.
 
If there's two things Oblivion taught me, they are:

1. Bethesda's games are excellent. Maybe not great due to their impossible scale, but their worlds do pull you in.

2. Never buy a Bethesda game's first release and DLCs. Wait for the GOTY edition to have everything properly combined and seamless, for the correct price.

too many haters in here.

took me 2 hours and i feel like it was the best 10 bucks i've ever spent. lots of fun. the goodies at the end are awesome too.
 
btw, for anyone who hasn't bought it yet, I'd say hold out and pray for deal or at least wait until March for the level cap to be raised. It's not really worth for the cost they sell it at.
 
So I havent played it through yet, but its around 2hrs long and people are complaining?

WTF did you expect when it showed up for 800pts? Thats only 10bux. $10 for 2hrs would work out at roughly 10-12hrs for $60 if it was a full priced game.

So what exactly is the problem?

I would have loved it to be 4+ hrs too, but the second I saw that it was 800pts, not 1200 or 1600 I knew it would be a little on the short side.

I had the same problem with Fawkes. I went back and made him wait at Megaton before going in.
 
I really like it so far. The Gauss Rifle kicks ass, and the action-oriented gameplay, refreshing atmosphere & new gear are well worth the $10.
 
Up to the armory after the rendezvous with the sergeant dude. Pretty cool, but I can see why people are saying it is linear. Is most of it just shooting action or are there any sequences like the regular side quests where you have to make decisions about things?

Also, if you start this with a character below level 20 do you get XP for the quests completed and the "virtual" kills? I'll replay this in the future if I ever get around to starting a new character.

Yeah, you get XP. I've gone from 16 to 18 before even getting to the second half.

Well that's cool. I'll at least get to replay it at some point whenever I start a new character. I might just wait until the next DLC is out as well and then start from scratch.
 
Your follower dies once you enter the simulation? I better send Fawkes back to the building... where the Underworld entrance is.... I think.

Fawkes stayed alive for me, but at first when I was incorrectly trying to use a subway tunnel to get to the outcast HQ he got stuck way behind me as he kept running into a wall. My guess is the people who have a follower dying are leaving him somewhere without realizing it.

Anyway, while I was in that subway area I found some key, opened a safe with naughty nightwear in it, and a guy named "Lugnut" came running into the room and demanded it. :lol I've got a good speech skill so I convinced him to let me keep it. It's amazing the amount of random shit that pops up in the game, and the amount of stuff you can encounter even beyond the side missions. Is the holotape that talks about delivering a "package" referring to the nightwear or something else?

I really gotta replay this after I finish the DLC. There are bobble heads I cannot get with this character and I still have not nuked megaton. I'll have to remember to break into Lucas Simms' house first before I do the deed.

Yeah, you can deliver the nightware to Girdershade for some decent caps.
