The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Bumped into operation anchorage very organically. Was off doing a sidequest for Moira (skipped these the first time through). I am enjoying this dlc a lot. Sure it's combat focused but the production values of this quest are great. I enjoy the combat with the perks I have. What a great game. Fallout 3 will stay on my hard drive for a long, long time.

Just received my copy this past Friday. I'm loving it so far and I wish I had picked it up sooner. I made a decision between FO3 and Fable 2 and Fable won out as I enjoyed Fable 1 more then I did Fallout 1 and 2. However I'm just messing around with that now and I can't hold off on taking FO3 for a spin.

I've been messing around with it the little I could this weekend which wasn't much though as I was pretty sick. I think I've figured out how I should be playing this game (at least in the beginning) and what my problem was so far (finding ammo has been a pain for example). Hoping others could tell me if my train of thought is right here and hopefully this could help out others.

1. I should not be playing this game as if it were a FPS no matter what. I have to remind myself that this is an RPG and though you are in first person view most of the time it isn't a shooter. That was my biggest mistake I think. Ammo seems to scarce and unless I'm in a decent range to use my VATS shooting from a distant seems to be a waste of time. I've gotten lucky a few times shooting from a distance without the VATS but that was really rare.

2. AP don't refill as slow as I thought they would. That was a worry I had before I got the game and couldn't find anything really on the speed in which they returned. So I should back off, let them refill and get out of the line of fire. If I get jumped from behind I should switch to a melee weapon to save ammo, especially if the raider doesn't have a gun. Unless it's a super mutant then I'm running and then shooting or simply running if I don't have ammo. Have only run into one (which surprised me as I wasn't anywhere near downtown DC which I thought was where they were located) and it was a melee version so not sure how well I could do against one in melee range.

3. No run and gun even if it seems like it could be okay. Circle around if need be. Now this might change as I get more levels but I learned this early in the Super Duper Mart. In fact it was more fun to actually take my time and let enemies come to me or try to get a decent shot as to not waste ammo. Doesn't hurt that I never get tired of seeing enemies killed by using the VATS. This really is an important part of the game the more I play it. More important then I thought it would be.

Going to start over with these thoughts in mind when I get home. Going to be using melee more on lone raiders if I see they aren't using guns to save ammo. Only really going to use guns in VATS unless I'm trying to get somethings attention and have it come to me. This should help me stop worrying about ammo for a while and waiting until Moria in Megaton gets a new supply. I already don't bother with getting weapons repaired there but going to start with more points in repair this time around to make that go easier and keep putting points in that (to save money and to increase the damage weapons do after they are repaired).

Is this the line of thinking I should be on at least at a start when playing this game for the first time?

...this mod is just incredible.

It basically turns the game into a "World" landscape.

That way modders can create all the locations they want, and using this mod as an "interface" type of thing, they can place their location anywhere in the "globe" in the PIP Boy. Basically, it'll bring all the places that modders create, and give them the ability to literally make it one giant world where you can travel between locations like the old Fallouts.

New Pip Boy: http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/1460/fo320090517142656.png

The Ocean: http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/306/fo320090517142927.png

Here's another cool one. Called Existance 2.0.

Another fantastic mod, adds a robot dj radio station full of ambient music with a quest only doable by listening to the robot's lucid dreams.

Fits perfectly and immersively in the Fallout world.

You just love making us console players jealous dont ya.

Yeah, VATS is basically what you should be using most of the time, at least until you get so ridiculously powerful that it doesn't matter anymore. Ammo is only a problem at the beginning of the game, later you can take the Scrounger perk to get all the ammo you want. Putting points in repair is almost a requirement since not only do you save money by repairing your own stuff, you also MAKE money by selling equpiment you find and repair.

And onte last thing: PLAY ON HARD. Normal is basically Very Easy after a few hours.

Just finished operaion acnhorage last night. Can I come back to the oupost and get some of the loot, or do I have to get what I want before leaving?

Thanks. The difficulty just determines how much damage you do and is done to you correct?

I think so. The game is easy enough even on the harder difficulties because of the weird design decision that allows you to pause the game during combat and consume any number of stimpacks instantly. They should've gone with a system similar to Far Cry 2 and Call of Cthulhu IMO.

For the "Find Zimmer's Android" mission
Do I still get the experience points when I tell him that his android is dead, like that lady that told me? I just want to get this shitty mission over with.

I don't have an answer to your question but you can get two really good rewards
(one perk and one of the best energy weapons in the game)
from that quest if you do it all the way to the end.

Anyone have any experience with the Type 3 body replacer? I've tried getting some custom clothing to work with it, but as soon as I equip them, the body disappear(just a floating head+arms left) If I unequip or equip some of the standard clothes, the body is displayed just fine.

I purchased Broken Steal but I haven't actually completed the main game yet. I was considering buying one of the other add ons before completing the main quest and continuing on to Broken Steal. Which will I get the most out of enjoyment wise and equipment wise, the Pitt or Operation: Anchorage?

the Pitt overall is a better experience, and offers some perks

but OA offers way better loot, including the gauss rifle which is much stronger than the sniper rifle.

Hmmmm... that makes it a tough choice. I need a beefier arsenal. The Chinese assault rifle, sniper rifle and Assault Shotgun just don't pack the punch I need for the new Broken Steel enemies.

Just curious. Is it possible to play mainly as a melee character? Or will you have to use guns no matter what? If I recall couldn't you go melee if you wanted in the original games?

I have been thinking of trying it. It is technically possible but I imagine that you would get fucked up a lot in combat. There will also be difficult to reach or out of reach enemies with lots of fire power to deal with.

Where do you go to initiate caravan defense, and is it fun enough to keep doing from level 24 to 30? I really like dismembering people in VATS, so it could work for me. :lol

Just get A3-21's Plasma Rifle or the regular Plasma Rifle. They both have high Critical Damage and use the easy to find Microfusion Cells.

Finished The Pitt (after doing Broken Steel) and I thought it was quite good. It started out very impactful and only dulled off a bit at the end. I'll say this: The Captial Wasteland is pristine and pleasant compared to The Pitt. It's like every wall is covered in blood and shit with a splash of bloody shit and a dab of shitty blood just to mix it up a bit.

I was having so much fun that I really didn't care to get my old equipment back and in truth that's when the adventure kind of plateaued. The Man Opener has replaced the Shiskabob as my melee weapon of choice. Even without using VATS that thing is a nightmare of dismemberment against melee monsters.

I couldn't find a vendor or merchant in The Pitt. Did I miss something? Also in The Pitt are some surprisingly good clothing choices if you're keen on beefing up your wardrobe. I'm not talking about superior power armour (though there is a single suit worth getting.) I'm talking about clothes with mediocre stats but look good.

Next up O.A.

Yeah, during the regular game I was all small arms with the Chinese Assault Rifle being my go-to. But against the Broken Steal enemies I've switched over to a plasma rifle because it was taking way to long with regular ammo. Flamethrower still works nicely for all the deathclaws you run into though.

Seriously, Bethesda needs to come out with at least 35 new expensions. I just want to play more Fallout 3. MOAR.

Point Look better be real, and as good as Broken Steel.

EDIT. Wait it's real and just got announced WTF? :lol

I've actually only found one plasma rifle so far. I ran into a lone enclave soldier who attacked me. I killed him and took his rifle. The last main quest mission I completed was Tranquility Lane. Will I be running into more plasma rifle toting enemies later on?

Oh yes. At one point I found enough plasma rifles to keep my plasma rifle of choice at 100% after every battle. Same with the hellfire power armor.

Oh and...this game would technically be very doable as melee only, however the annoying AI makes it an exercise in frustration. They run around all crazy-like and run faster backwards then I do forwards. It's because of things like that that I went from primarily melee to moar laser gattling gun mode. However, the shishkebab fucks shit up with the trait that boosts fire damage. The damage is something like 52 and it destroys enemies. Get that and the flame thrower that shoots balls of flame and you have every range covered pretty well. Towards the middle/end of the game you find plenty of gas canisters to keep your flame gun of choice going.

I'm also super excited about the DLC. I've always wanted to get abducted by aliens lol

wooo more content. almost level 19 now, with all the quests I have left to do plus these 2 new expansions I should have no problem making it to level 30

I hit level 30 and finished Broken Steel last week. I'm not sure if I have it in my to play these next 2 DLCs. I just think I'm done with Fallout 3. It was a great run though.

Same. Having said that, this game is second only to Diablo 2 in regards to getting my money's worth and I can't wait for the next one

Was reading the Fallout wiki and I'm wondering if the patches put out for the game fix the bugs that were in the game? All versions? For example things regarding Big Town?

Hahaha!

I WISH I had a PC that was good enough to run FO3. I've been playing it on the 360 and have quite a few hours in. I'm just reading up on mods for the moment in which I possess a PC good enough to run FO3. I have an entire folder full and ready to rock! :)

My bro is letting me borrow his laptop for when I work an overnight shift this week.

I'm gonna start the Alternate Start mod and see what happens.

You create your history at the start. You can be affiliated with any faction in the wasteland (Raiders, Outcasts, Chinese, BOS) and you are put in the middle of the wasteland in a shack with ammo and items based off your character's "history." A total roleplayers dream and it makes your character independent of the main questline. No birth/growing up/etc. You're just smack in the middle of the wastleland with a newly created character.

Spoiler questions regarding Big Town and Paradise Falls.

Big Town
I just got to the part in Big Town where I'm asked to rescue some people from the Germantown Police HQ. I figure it has Super Mutants there (haven't gone yet). If you clean out that entire area will it stop Big Town from being attacked later on and the people there being killed?

Paradise question
If you kill everyone in Paradise Falls save the slaves will others in the game world react to that? Will they be relieved they don't have to worry about them anymore? Or will the slavers simply respawn?

Thanks.

You get this awesome laser rifle in the pitt. It's called the metal blaster, it's repairable with the regular laser rifles also. Iirc you get it from collecting metal ingots and selling them to this dude that's next to the junkyard in the pitt.

I think you get like 6 shots during vats using this gun, as opposed to only 4 for most of the other guns.

---fuck, more dlc and i'm already level 29

Big Town:
What level are you? This was one of the first side quests I tried and it can be brutal at lower levels. There are LOTS of Super Mutants there. Completing this mission and clearing out the area will not prevent the future attack on Big Town.

Paradise:
I killed everyone there and I haven't encountered any former slaves/current slaves that know about the massacre I performed up there. In fact, I did the Head of State quest after Paradise and the former slaves there didn't know what I did.

No it will not stop,After you rescue the people, there is another quest for you to do, you have to protect Big Town from an attack from those monsters, after that they stop.

I decided not to kill the people in Paradise falls and did the sidequest where you have to find 3 people and enslave them which gave me acess inside Paradise falls, later on the game, one of the main quests wants you to rescue the kids from Paradise Falls, I am at that missions right now, I am guessing after you recue the kids, everyone will be attacking you in that place

paradise falls:
I killed everyone. Later on, I forget where I was, but there were some raiders that said i was the asshole that shot up paradise falls, and they attacked me

Quick question, do the technical issues involved with the PC version outweigh the obvious benefits of the PC version? Note that I have Windows 7 x64 (and a XP or Vista partition is out of the question).

I'm running 64 bit Vista and I haven't had any real issues except an occasional crash (maybe once every 10 hours) and ever since I installed Broken Steel I have to end the process with Task Manager when I exit the game but that issue isn't isolated to me.
