The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess I'll just rent it first and decide one way or another.
First few hours are really provocative, after then it stops holding your hand and that's when results may vary. I think the opening will totally sell you on the game and then your first few hours in the wasteland will either seal the deal or leave you with doubts.

It was my first Bethesda game, the freedom totally left me in awe.

I really enjoyed Mothership Zeta. I don't think the corridor shooter critique is really fair -- if you're playing stealth or melee there's lots of fun to be had.

And there's so much stuff to loot. I was scrounging the entire time.

Mostly, I like this one for the places it takes me and the things it shows me. The finale is a fairly spectacular cap on the over-arching Fallout 3 story.

The ending of Mothership Zeta really wasn't worth me going back to it this afternoon. On RebelFM they were saying there were a few cool bits - but none of them really impressed me all that much. Certainly not enough for an extra hour of boring corridor shooting.

I did get me some good loot, though, so when I decide to go back to the game I can sell at least 3000 caps worth of stuff. :D

It's kind of a bummer the DLC had to go out a low not since it's been one of the finest examples of how the digital distribution method can really work for a game like this.

I'd rank them:
1. Broken Steel
2. Point Lookout
3. The Pitt
4. Operation Anchorage
5. Mothership Zeta

If I recall correctly there were wasn't a single
samurai, cowboy or Buttercup factory
in Operation Anchorage.

I bought and played through the main game, OpAnchorage, The Pitt, and Broken Steel on 360. I have the opportunity to swap my Fallout 3 for Fallout 3 GOTY for less than the cost of Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta.

Two questions about the GOTY, since I can't find this information anywhere online:
- Will it take my Fallout 3 save game, no problem? I guess the better way to put it--will it register as Fallout 3 on the 360 or will it be a separate game with separate saves, achievements, etc?

- Will the DLC included on the GOTY disc have to be installed to the hard drive, or will they be a part of the on-disc game? It'd sure be swell if I could clear up that several gigs, given that I'm still on a 20 gig HDD.

I can't find this info anywhere :(

for oblivion goty on 360 the dlc was on a separate install disc and then you used the game disc to play, all the dlc combined is like 3 gigs so that + original fallout is prolly more than 7 gigs of one dvd, id guess.

I actually really like Mothership Zeta and like Flynn said you can have a bit of fun if you're a stealth/melee character. Gonna finish it up tonight.

Fuck. I just saved over one of my other characters.
I did that a few nights ago and lost 10 hours or so. :(

I saved over my first character with 70 + hours. I guess its okay since he was my trial run character and I made others that are much better but that shit still hurts.

That part alone almost made a buddy of mine quit the game. He was something like a level 4 at the time.

Yeah... I was level 3 killing those ants with low cnd weps. =\ Took forever to finish, but the challenge was worth it, and beating it was pretty satisfying.

Wait - so, Oblivion pales compared to Fallout 3?

I played Fallout 3 - essentially 100% - every town, subway, cave, NPC, all the DLCs etc and loved it.

So I went out and bought Oblivion GOTY edition. Should I return it? It's sealed brand new...

Well i bought oblivion day 1, popped it in, played for 2 hours, turned it off. Tried to return to it a few months ago, played 2 more hours, still hated it. But I did just finish FO3 the other night, really enjoyed that game.

I'm having an issue where I can no longer move the camera with the right stick. Works fine on the world map in pip-boy mode, it's only unresponsive with the camera. I've already cleared the cache (XX,LB,RB,XX method), but no luck. Anyone else have this issue or know a way fix to it?

no no no, i really think the oblivion hate on this board is ridiculous. playing fallout 3 gave me the same kinds of awesome feelings i got playing oblivion, it just has problems with variety and level scaling. on the pc, you can fix the scaling, but i played through my first time on a 360 and had a blast.

PC? If PC then find some of the good mods out there. Theres on in particular that changes A LOT of stuff to the way it should have been.

Well, what's so wrong with scaling? I mean - you want things to be challenging throughout don't you?

Also, Fallout 3 scales as well - maybe not a 1:1 ratio scale, but it does. I've fought enemies at level 1 and then at level 30, from teh same area - the same type, and they do increase in power/defense.

No, I just a MacBook.

First I don't even know if Oblivion + DLC content is available for Mac...

Man, but if there is anything to go by it seems as if Oblivion is dogshit that got all those 9's and 10's from money hats a few years back and Fallout 3 is the messiah (which I agree, cus' I loved Fallout 3, favorite 360 game thus far).

Is.there.anything. - Oblivion does better?

You'll get a long list going both ways by asking here, but I think the majority would agree Fallout3 is the better game.

Also, I [don't think] it would be any problem getting mods to work on a mac, but I can't say I've tried.

Oblivion's biggest strike against it is level-scaling...meaning enemies always scale to your level, regardless of what they are. Also, the world of Fallout3 lends itself better to Bethesda's engine as the post-apocalyptic setting works better when theres only so many NPCs running about. Oblivion's world on the other hands feels very empty and lifeless. However, the rest of the game is pretty great, especially the combat. Its certainly worth trying, especially if you get some of the more major mods(player-created content) working on it.

I think for most, it takes a lot of significance away from what level you are and the overall 'rpg' feel of the game. Like whats the point?

I've been tempted to play oblivion again since I loved fallout 3 so much, I keep thinking maybe I was just overwhelmed with it back then because I hadn't really played that kind of game before

True. You want to feel overpowered and underpowered depending on how far you push.

But, I see so many posts about people bitching about Fallout 3 being too easy and pumping the difficulty to hard and yet still calling it easy -- it's probably because they are hardcoring things to the nth degree and getting the god-like weapon and armor stupidly early. So they push themselves for 2 hours getting super gear and stats/perks etc., and then complain that the next 40 hours are too easy. Scaling fixes this entirely...no?

i think bethesda had good intentions with leveling enemies as you yourself leveled in oblivion, but it got kind of out of hand at times. fallout 3 is much better at this, but i kind of feel like the level 1 creatures should pose more of a challenge if you're level 30.

and ruins most of why we play rpgs :D, fallout scales also its like this tho

area A: levels 1-6

so if you enter area A: at level 1 stuff is level 1 or 2, or if you enter at level 5 stuff is 4/5/6

but if you never went there and came back at level 30 stuff would only be around level 6 at max.

oblivion is like every item/chest/npc/dungeon/etc = your level, or in the guards case your level + 5 or whatever. Fallouts method is better, but its still too easy because in fallout 3 VATS mode you only take 10% damage instead of 100%, so its like a godmode, however on pc they have mods that make it 100% damage in VATS and its fucking HARD!, im talking 2 or 3 shots your dead hard, and i love it :D

We've got a crew in the house, four of us, all playing our own games right now. All of us are playing slightly different characters and doing quests in different orders/fashions. It's always cool discussing shit.

I finally got around to collecting all of the bobbleheads today. They look so nice bobbling away on their stand :D

All that's left is those damn recordings in mothership zeta
and I'm done with Fallout 3 forever.

Has there been any word about how frequently they plan to release the PS3 DLC now it's not coming until September? If they're going to keep them a month apart I'm thinking it'll be better waiting a month for the GOTY.

It's gonna be pretty neck and neck. It'll probably be the better bet just picking up the whole box.

Just play it for the dark brotherhood sidequests alone, the main storyline isn't that interesting, but the game is not as bad as some people here try to make it seem.

I found that it kind of balanced out Oblivion if you knocked the difficulty slider back a few notches.

Should I do this? Because I already leveled up to 3 after about 5 hours of play - and already those stupid rats are now taking 3 or so swings from my sword as opposed to one at level 1, and it's pissing me off. It's like - I should never fall asleep so I never level up, it's fucking ridiculous.

Do you get "less XP" (or however the fuck the game levels you up) if you knock back the difficultly slider? Any changes to quests, stories, achievements, items etc. if you alter the difficulty?

There's no such thing as "XP" in Oblivion. To gain levels you just use your major skills. EX: Ssimply wearing Heavy Armor and getting hit by stuff will slowly raise that skill. When your major skills get to a certain point you level up.

And yes, sliding back the slider a notch or two makes Oblivion make more sense.

Also another tip. Play Oblivion WITHOUT starting the main quest. Trust me. DO NOT GO TO KVATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

That way you can just play the side quests and take in the world without all those stupid Oblivion gates popping up everywhere. I already have a 60 hour character going and I haven't started the main quest yet.

How do you repair unique items like the Chinese stealth-suit and the Gauss gun for example? I'm scared of using them in fear of wearing them out.

Don't think I've seen it mentioned in this thread yet, but has anyone had a chance to try the mod "Return to Shady Sands" ?

Seems like a cool quest hub, but I'm wondering if the stories and characters created are worth seeing.

I would check for myself, but I'm waiting for FOOK v2.0 to hit before I dive into FO3 for a 3rd time.

I forced my self to delete my saves and start over. I was already at level 30 by the time Point Lookout was released.

I hit the level cap in the original b4 the addons so I am completing objectives and missing out on good perks.

Doing this allows me to get the perks I need.

So I hit level 10 and go straight for the Point lookout just to kill a hill-billy and get the lever action rifle. Exit out and jump into Operation Anchorage add-on so I can go thru the rest of the game with Gauss rifle & Chinese stealth suit.

Anyone knows if and when the cap is going over 30?

it took me nearly 70 hours to figure out how fun energy weapons are.

speaking more broadly: standing atop the point lookout lighthouse, it occurs to me that a game as good as this has no right to exist. ten years ago, i would have never imagined something of its breadth and quality. the future is bad ass.

save this statement for the next fallout(?) which I hope has better balance (fallout 3 has none mid game onward), and animation (seriously Bethesda animates models like its a 1998 quake mod).

otherwise fallout 3 is a good start with some rough edges (Animation, Lighting, Balance)

i did play it through vanilla though and enjoy it, something im currently SUFFERING through with oblivion on 360 (again, god its bad).

i'm an atmosphere and weird-experience kinda guy. i understand balance is important, but ultimately, i play and enjoy games like this because they take me to strange places.

and certainly there are strange places in abundance to be seen here.

You know I'm sooo fucking tried of these goddamn glitches, I just beat the game and sacrificed myself, and saw the ending! Well, the credits roll and I'm thinking I guess Broken steel loads after that nooope! WWWWTFF! Bethesda!

After a few more levels those rats will probably turn into Daedric gods of war so you're probably boned, sorry.

I tried Oblivion vanilla, I tried it with mods, I even watched a fun little Let's Play that slapped on nearly every ridiculous mod imaginable, but the game is just not very good. On the other hand, I've only touched Morrowind for a couple of hours and I can already see the appeal in it. It has a distinctive landscape, the NPCs seem to actually have things to say besides pissing and moaning about mudcrabs, exploring seems to be somewhat rewarding.

I got this glitch where Sarah Lyons got stuck on the last mission, she wouldn't follow me into the purity control chamber, and so after i cleared out the room of enemies, because she wasn't there the intercom wouldn't come on and the plot wouldn't continue. Also the doors locked behind me so i couldn't get out! Didn't have a previous save within reasonable time either!

I fixed it by using a console command, a player.moveto one or something. Then she teleported into the room and the plot progressed, except then there were two Sarah Lyons! Didn't matter though because the game just ended and it was ok.

Imagine if i was playing that on the consoles. Would have been screwed.
