The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

fawkes is the best, fitted her up with a lazer turret and she's unstoppable.

so i just bought all the DLC today and im about to do the final mission so i can get through to the other side and work on getting to lvl 30. though im not sure how it all works. everything just gets put somewhere on the map right? and i can travel there to do each of the DLC missions? also i'm not sure how to operation anchorage running because i don't think it showed on the map, at least i don't think it did.

I have been playing the crud out of this game, and I am anxiously waiting for the PS3 content, and saw the post on the Playstation blog that it probably won't be ready till next month. Now with the GOTY coming out, what will that entail? Will that be all the expansions and the game? Or Ancorage/Pitt/Broken Steel?

Just wondering.

The game + all the dlc

Fawkes is actually a male.

Bethesda confirmed it.

Per Wiki:

"By activating the Terminal by the door of Fawkes room in Vault 87, and using the 'Identify Specimen' function, you will find that the cell's inhabitant is called 'Specimen D164'. A different terminal in a room close to Fawkes' cell contains data on 5 specimen, stating that D164 was a female. However, it is unknown whether Fawkes actually is Specimen D164 or whether he (got) moved into the cell after the original inhabitant had died. In any case, Fawkes has been confirmed to be male by Bethesda."

True. You want to feel overpowered and underpowered depending on how far you push.

But, I see so many posts about people bitching about Fallout 3 being too easy and pumping the difficulty to hard and yet still calling it easy -- it's probably because they are hardcoring things to the nth degree and getting the god-like weapon and armor stupidly early. So they push themselves for 2 hours getting super gear and stats/perks etc., and then complain that the next 40 hours are too easy. Scaling fixes this entirely...no?

Yup. Fallout 3 lets you feel overpowered, but will still throw a couple gnarly enemies at you to make things interesting. Oblivion - and I do actually prefer parts of Oblivion in the end - takes absolutely the wrong approach: There is no reason to level up other than getting prettier weapons and armour.

I found Oblivion way more enjoyable when I installed a level-diversifier mod. When I was at level 6-7, walking around the town in the North, me and a bunch of guards were attacked by a gigantic snow beast. It was the type of RPG challenge that the vanilla version lacked (ie, having to rely on more than just your ability to dish out damage).

How do you repair unique items like the Chinese stealth-suit and the Gauss gun for example? I'm scared of using them in fear of wearing them out.
The only way you can repair them is to have an NPC repair it for you. Though they added Alien Epoxy to the Mothership Zeta DLC which repairs your currently equipped weapon, however they are limited.

I HATE Albino Radscorpions. Whenever I see one coming at me I try to cheese the thing into death. Also, Super Mutant Overlords can suck my big one. Whoever said these guys could punish you into using a ton of stimpaks sucks.

The Chinese Stealth Suit can be repaired with regular recon armor. I've done this many times.

That's nice to know when I get it.

Currently my first playthrough is with a Big Guns, Brotherhood Armor style character.

Next playthrough will be a Stealth/Melee character. Seems a lot of stuff built in Zeta is for stealth/melee, sounds like fun.

The stealth suit can be repaired using recon armor.

*beaten* :P

Well, I just have one mission left, but I've been saving my levels, by playing on very easy. Now I'm level 27 and I'm not sure if I should use the here and now perk, I've done everything, been playing on very hard to:lol :lol :lol Took 10 shots with the Gauss to kill a sentry bot!

I just downloaded point lookout and zeta on 360, giving me all the dlc. Now my framerate has suddenly gone to crap. It's practically unplayable now.
not for me. Sometimes it has been bad framerate, but generally okay.

I redownloaded zeta and things got better. Still oddly chuggy at parts that weren't before, but playable.
Good :D

I'm actually going to outline my Melee/Sneak build for you all to check out and critique.

Bottlecap Mines & Nuka Grenades.

i just repaired the lighthouse in point lookout, and i have no idea why.

what was the point of that?
I did the same thing. It was really cool to be able to do something so random.

The Fallout wiki says that this will eventually cause raiders to set up a camp inside, but I haven't gone back to check this out. May have to soon.

Does anyone have advice on which skills I should focus on from the start?

I usually go small guns, repair then either lockpick or science. Lockpick is probably the better one to level up first.

You generally don't need both science and lockpick (although there are some occasions where having certainly both help out). But if you play it right you'll be leveling up skills pretty quickly and it really won't matter that much.

Still haven't played any of the expansions since GameFly isn't renting them. :( When is the GOTY edition coming out with some of them included?

A lot of the best have been suggested already (in particular repair, lockpick, and medicine are a must) but I also personally use a ton of grenades early in the game so I like to put a little into explosives too.

Explosives is huge if you don't plan on going the Big Guns route. I can't even count the number of times that a mine or grenade has saved my ass.

I'm at about Level 5 1/2 and have upgraded most intensively in small guns, lock pick, repair, speech, melee, medicine and a bit in science.

Any of those I should just forget about?

I like to carry a pretty sizable supply of both whenever I head out into the wastes just in case I run into a Super Mutant Overlord or an albino radscorpion.

I know some people really like it, but I never considered melee to be of much use.

Melee + Pyro + Shish

Beat Operation: Anchorage last night. Awesome as hell, felt like playing Goldeneye! :lol

Playing through The Pitt now, really like the feel that I have no power or ability to escape.

I'd ditch melee. I rarely used it, and if you start to miss it you'll have plenty of opportunities to increase it later. And if you havn't already, get the perk that gives you a 2 point increase from skill books instead of 1 point. I forget what level you can get it at, it's either 4 or 6.

Damn, Fauxx (think that's his name) has been my favorite person to team up with in a game. He's so funny for a mutant.

"Die metal man!!!" when shooting a robot :lol

I used the Melee (Upgraded mostly through skill books with the bonus point) + Shishkebab mainly in Caves and Underground tunnels. Freaking awesome!

Going to try upgrading it much earlier in my 2nd play through.

Just finished Mothership Zeta and tbh, I couldn't get through it fast enough. I thought it was disappointing after Pointout Look which remains the best DLC.

Some said it earlier in the thread I remember, because Outlook is like a mini version of Fallout 3 itself. Mothership Zeta was more like Anchorage, much more of a straight shooter, which is a nice diversion, but not really what I came to the party for.

Still a fantastic game, great value for money and the best open world game I've played.

I'm done with the game. I've reached level 30 today and all DLC is done. There are some achievements left, but I don't really feel like doing them.

It was a wonderful experience and it might end up being my favorite game of the generation.

Probably been addressed before, but is it ok to buy a used copy of the disc-based DLC for the 360 version? I saw a few being sold but am afraid it has some system presevnting it from being installed on more than one console.
