So I bought Fallout 3 GOTY today and I started playing and what the fuck?! My saves from the original Fallout 3 do not work?! Seriously what the fuck? I've put over 200 hours into this game and now I need to put in another 30 before I have a chance at the DLC episodes, this fucking sucks.

I wanted the additional DLC episodes but didn't want to buy them through the PS Store (DD gives aids) so now I need to replay this bullshit again, fuck, fuck, fuck!

Wow, that blows. I didn't think it would do that, considering that the new trophies are all listed under Fallout 3, and not GOTY or something. Weird.

Apparently according to the official site the saves should work, but they don't seem to be for a lot of people. Over on Gamefaqs it seems like pretty much everybody who can't get saves to load are in Canada, or they're playing the GOTY version from a different region than their original copy was from.

Edit: People (at least on Gamefaqs) are confirming that 360 saves are fine, since there's a 2nd disc for the DLC that you install and play off the 1st/original disc (just like the Shivering Isles disc in Oblivion GOTY).

I'm in Canada....but my original copy was definitely also from Canada. I don't think there is a region difference between Canada and the US, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Edit: Ah, that's reassuring to hear it shouldn't be a problem with the 360. Thanks much.

Dunno what's up with the Canada thing, but across the board it seems to be Canada people. People are saying it might be some sort of region coding error, I have no idea. Is it possible the GOTY edition for Canada somehow is treated as a US version, so it causes problems with the original save loading maybe? People seem to think they might be able to patch it, since the official word is that it's supposed to work.
 
Yeah it turns out that either Bethesda shipped the original version to us Canadians in a different region format than the GOTY Edition... or vise versa. Man I'm pissed.

Let's assume for a moment that you really meant PS3. I don't know about anyone else, but I had little to no issues with the original Fallout 3 release on the PS3. It ran fine, and I actually don't think I remember experiencing that much slowdown or anything like that.

Post-DLC the game chugs and has crashed at least twice for me. Bethesda broke their game on the PS3, it's not the platform's fault - which is obviously what you're trollishly trying to suggest.

This save game problem with the GOTY edition is even more ridiculous. Sure, graphical issues and slowdown - blame a developer's incompetence with a particular platform's architecture, etc. But simple file I/O and that sort of thing really shouldn't be a big deal - though something like this shouldn't have made it through Sony's own QA department either.

Just loaded my final save up from February when I last played FO3 on the 360. No problems so far. Man, it's so good to see this world again (though Fawkes nearly gave me a heart attack by shouting out "WE SHOULD BE MINDFUL" right behind my back - forgot he was there! :lol)

EDIT: Whoops, beaten. Also, if anyone doesn't want the FO3 premium theme, I'll be happy to take it off your hands. :)

Thanks guys, this really helped me out. I'm going to buy it soon now that I know it will work with the saves.
 
Isn't that part of the reason why the DLC for the PS3 wasnt there to begin with, and why the Oblivion DLC was such an issue as well? They said they ran into memory issues before they later retracted it due to PR pressure. The freezing sure would hint at that sort of a problem.
 
So I basically narrowed it down to this:

Attn: Canadians and PS3 owners! Why your original Fallout 3 saves don't work the GOTY Edition.

If you're like me and bought the PS3 Fallout GOTY Edition in hopes of using your old Fallout 3 saves then you know it doesn't work. Before you start breaking discs you should check the catalog number located on your original Fallout 3 game and the GOTY Edition.

It turns out that Bethesda shipped two different region coded Fallout versions to the Canadian market thus the GOTY is not compatible with it because:

a) Bethesda originally shipped the original Fallout 3 game which was US region coded and then shipped a Canadian region coded GOTY Edition. Thus saves are incompatible.

or

b) Bethesda originally shipped the original Fallout 3 game which was Canadian region coded and then shipped a US region coded GOTY Edition. Thus saves are incompatible.

So unless you have both US or both Canadian version SKUs your old Fallout 3 saves will not work... unless Bethesda acknowledges the issue and patches it (which I doubt). You could always say meh "my 200+ hour saves are important and I'll just start another new game save"... that is not a reasonable answer thus I advise every Canadian affected by this issue to:

1. Email the Bethesda Support here.

2. Report your problems on the official Bethesda Fallout 3/PS3 forums found here.

3. Pray?

By the way the SKUs that I have that don't work are:

Fallout 3: Collectors Edition BLUS- 30185 (Note that the sleeve on the lunchbox tin lists BLUS- 30216)
Fallout 3: Game of The Year Edition BLUS- 30234

Both of these games were purchased from the same EB Games Canada store and both were purchased new.
 
My save from early this year worked without a hitch.

Canadian 360.

Now, to play the DLC using my old level 20? Or to start completely fresh and hit the DLC that way...

Have anyone tried playing the game from scratch, without using an old save game? Or clearing the cache when starting up? Or using a previous version of the PS3 firmware?

While Bethesda must have the worst QA department in the whole world, there still had to have been conditions under which their copies worked.

Yep yep was having this last night. Consta-freeze. Two hard resets. It seems to be chugging over the hard-drive or something. Sometimes when I get the VATS-freeze I just leave it for 5-10 mins and it wakes up. Pisses me right off because I've lost 15 mins or so of gaming twice because of things like this. Its the buggiest thing to hit my PS3 since Inferno Pool.

Yes, buy the version without mod support on a supposedly inferior machine in comparison to your current PC.

Still no news on New Vegas apparently. It's an interesting situation whenever Obsidian's involved, for better or worse.

what are the actual symptoms of a non-working save? im in the US and when i try to load a save it just hangs on the loading screen. doesnt freeze, just churns forever...

Basically you can't use your old saves from the original Fallout 3. My old Fallout 3 saves don't appear in the LOAD option.
 
So I said fuck it to waiting on the GOTY patch and started Point Lookout with my Level 4 character. Man I really wish the leveling took longer as your vulnerbility makes the game feel so much better, it gives it so much more atmosphere and dread.

Couldn't you keep your character vulnerable by just choosing skill points and perks that don't help you?

Like put all your skill points into science or something that doesnt really help, then your character would remain artificially weak in combat despite being high level.

Do you install all DLC packs before you start playing (like on the xbox360) or are they infused into the game on the same bluray disc as the original game?

Nope the DLC packs are on the disc, no installs required... well besides the 6600+ MB one. The moment you exit the Vault or load the GOTY with a previous Fallout 3 save all the DLC quests become available. So far from what I can tell Point Lookout runs pretty well for, well, a console Fallout. I haven't had any freezing and only occasional framerate drops.

Yeah, I checked their forums and they don't seem to respond to people complaining about the shitty state of the DLC on PS3.
 
Finally beat "Take It Back!" today. Been a long time coming. Started playing in late January and clocked 90 hours of game time. I'm going to sell my copy and move onto to some other long-form games. When I feel like going back to the Wasteland I'll get the GOTY edition.

Ending was OK. If I had rushed through the main quest just to see it I would have been disappointed, but after playing lots of other quests and soaking up more of the game I can see that it's in line with the rest of the narrative ... kind of flat. There were so many nice little moments along the way, but - for me at least - there were very few big moments. Granted there are some things I didn't do, like
blow up Megaton,
that would have rocked. But mostly it was just conversations and picking up items here and there. Every time I got to those few-and-far-between big or different moments, like
the 1950s neighborhood sim, Raven Rock, or walking behind Liberty Prime,
I always thought - "why isn't there more stuff like this?"

Just a general criticism. Maybe we're spoiled by "set pieces" and scripted FPS moments these days. Overall, I really did love the game and the whole experience. I haven't spent this long with a game since I played SquareSoft SNES titles as a teenager.

I have the Oblivion GOTY edition in shrink wrap. I'm afraid to dive into it because I actually want time to play some other things first, but I hope to get lost in that one, too. Thanks, Bethesda!
 
Wait a minute, I didn't get a cool case like this for the 360 in Canada, just a plain green case with a friggin' english/french sleeve laid overtop and sealed in plastic:

I don't think so. The DLC doesn't show up as purchased on my Live account, so I'm pretty sure it's completely separate. Also, the screen where you can choose whether or not to load the add-ons happens before you sign into Live. I don't think you would need to be signed in even if you had purchased the DLC from Live.

However, if you want to play while signed out, you'll have to copy your most recent save out of your Windows Live directory and into the root saves directory.

No. I was dreading having to involve myself with that POS, but luckily you can live without Live with the GOTY version. The only thing you'll be missing is the achievements.

I did have an issue where after installing the DLC from disc, the installation complained about the Live setup and refused to start (the 5360 error), but that was easily remedied by neutralising Live.

I have never logged into Live and haven't created a profile, but I'm very much enjoying Fallout 3 and its DLC at the moment. Perfect.
 
I picked up the 360 version with that buy 2 get 1 sale and my friend had asked me whether or not the other disc with the DLC on it would work on the original FO3 if he downloaded it. We can't try it out for a few days yet so I figured I'd ask here. Also what stats should I try and update. Should I do things like Gun nut?
 
Phew. Finally I'm completely and utterly done with Fallout 3.

I came some time ago to this thread declaring that I was going to return my Fallout 3 rental, having done the three first expansions and reaching L30 cap. Well, back then someone in this thread convinced me that Point Lookout is absolutely essential, so the OCD in me took over and I got Mothership Zeta too.

I must say that I don't regret getting either one. Point Lookout was a really enjoyable story with lots of variation. Plain fun. Mothership Zeta was a bit repetitive, but was totally worth it for the last chapter - it feels more like a true final level of a game than anything in the main storyline.

Clocked in some 96h since April. Fallout 3 was also my longest rental ever.


In terms of fun, value to the overall experience etc., here's how I rank the expansions


Broken Steel >>>> Point Lookout >>> Mothership Zeta >>>> Pitt >>>>>>>> Operation Anchorage

It works. A friend bought it. Me and another friend installed it onto our drives and it worked flawlessly with our old, regular copies.

I just got the GOTY for the PS3 and was wondering if I should tackle any of the DLC right away. Obviously, Broken Steel is out of the question, but are any of them worth doing as soon as I get out of the vault?

Also, what are some of the best perks? I know for sure that I'm getting Mysterious Stranger (he always made me laugh during my first try playing this game) but are any other ones absolutely awesome? I started with small guns, the one that gives you 10% more experience...and I can't remember if I selected another one.
 
About to pick this up (GOTY edition).

Should I go 360 or Ps3? Not using a previous save. Plenty of HDD space on both. Are these PS3 download content issues for original edition + downloads or GOTY edition as well?

I'd prefer ps3 for their controller for this type of game, but not if there is a performance edge on 360.

Which version?

I can't remember the name but the one that lets you find more ammo it's awesome and pretty useful. (Scavenger maybe?)

For the quest...just do them naturally. If you feel like checking any radio signal go for it.
 
Well I said "fuck it" to waiting on a patch from Bethesda for us Canadian GOTY owners and started, played and beat it again. I started with all the DLC expansions and got all the achievements in 32 hours. Finally, done.
 
PS3 version of Fallout 3 is now 19.98 on Amazon.com

With a backlog already of infamous, deadspace, bioshock, and valkyria chronicles, should I even bother?
 
Been playing Operation Anchorage on the PS3 version and I've had no issues with it. I was kind of concerned that all the DLC was borked on the PS3, but so far it's been fine. Maybe it only affects those who downloaded it?
 
OA was fine with me as well. Mothership Zeta and Broken Steel, not so much. BS consisted of a framerate of 1fps for 15% of the episode.

Wow, that's terrible. I guess I'll leave those for last. Maybe by then they'll have patched it up.
