The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Well, I played some of them on 360 so I know what to expect. I wasn't impressed with Pitt and the Alaska one, but my dad will want to play them all since he loved F3 and is talking about doing a replay. I was worried more about the technical aspect, like if it makes the game hang up at all, or make old saves incompatible or whatever?

It's probably answered earlier in this thread, but I'm just gonna ask and hope for a newer reply:

What are the problems with the DLC on PS3? I'm thinking about getting a point card for my dad so he can play all the DLC, but is there anything game-ruining or anything?

I just completed all the DLC on PS3 during the past several days. Here is my experience with each one. I beat the game last year but continued my old 69 hour save for the DLC.

Operation Anchorage: No technical problems, but I thought the mission was not as fun or interesting as the others.

Point Lookout: No problems that I recall. I enjoyed the quests in this DLC the most.

The Pitt: The game froze up once or twice and I had to power the PS3 down. There was about 4 times where the framerate would drop extremely low (1-2 fps) but would recover if I waited for a minute or two. Once when this happened I saved it and the game was fine when I reloaded the file. There were also a few times where the loading screens were much longer than usual, like 1-2 min. In my experience this is the glitchiest of the DLC.

Mothership Zeta: No problems up until the final sequence on
the alien bridge
where I kept dying in a mysterious explosion (I had saved right before, so when I reloaded I would die a few seconds later). I'm not sure if this was a glitch or part of the end sequence but luckily I could reload my autosave from a few minutes before.

Broken Steel: When I beat the game to trigger the new content, there was no narration in the ending. I tried twice and the same thing happended. The first time the game froze after the ending and I had to power down. The game also froze 3 times during the final mission and I had to power down.

There were also several times where the game seemed like it was frozen but would recover if I waited a minute. My advice is to save pretty often. Overall I enjoyed the DLC and it was great to get back into the game but I think the Pitt and Broken Steel needed more polish before release.

^ this is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for your input, I may just go for the disc version for him, if it's $40 at my BB. :)

No problem. PS - my experience is with the disc version, which I traded the original game in for. When you reload your old save on the GOTY edition the new quests are automatically added. So, I did not have any problems at all with my old saves from last year's game.

I too just bought the F3: GotY edition at Best Buy for $40...(360 version)...I'm setting it up now...I installed all the DLC and now the main disc shows up as the "regular" F3 version in my 360. My question is how do they prevent people from just "loaning" the 360 disc 2 that has all of the DLC on it to friends? You use disc 1 to play so after installing I assume you never need disc 2 again?

Ok Fallout-GAF...I'm getting the GOTY edition tonight and I want to know what order I should play the DLC in.

I have beaten the game and every sidequest in the original game, and I have not played any of the DLC yet.

The Pitt>Operation Anchorage>Mothership Zeta>Broken Steel>Point Lookout

The weapons and armor from OA and MZ will get you ready for Point Lookout

Shouldn't I do Broken Steel first if it raises the level cap? I'm at lvl 20 right now.

Or should I just make a brand new character?

Once Broken Steel is installed the level cap is raised to 30 automatically, no quest to do.

I just finished this as well. I have the GOTY version but didn't do any of the DLC yet. I'm not sure if I'm going to either.

I think I would have enjoyed this game more if I had not played Borderlands first. I'm not even talking about the obvious rpg type elements, but I'm more talking about the setting. I think Borderlands took a lot from Fallout 3, and I wish I would have played F3 first because I think it's a better game.

I'll just join the chorus of people who enjoyed VATS but really hated the combat outside of VATS. I think they really screwed it up pretty bad.
I also had Fawkes with me at the end...wtf. Seriously.

It's an interesting world, with a lot to do, it's a shame the combat outside of vats is so bad. 8/10 in my book. Also, item management is just piss poor and not fun. They have to find a way to deal with items in the world in a better way in the future. Most of these loot games do though. I also didn't like the way equipped or quick keyed items were all lumped in with the rest of the items. Every time I'd sell the one with the most damage I'd lose my quickslot and have to redo it, which was a pain in the ass.

Once you've installed the extra mission packs, you don't need the disc as you say, and can quite easily loan it to someone, or sell it on. It was the same with the Oblivion mission packs.

It's also the same with Rock Band. Once you've migrated the tracks to Rock Band 2, you don't really need the disc anymore.

Quite refreshing really, but I'm sure it won't be long before someone figures a way to stop people doing this (maybe having to use a unique code and connect to the internet or something).

If I'm looking for the best performance, besides the PC version, the 360 version is the way to go right?

I read that the PS3 had some issues with locking up (only the GOTY version) but maybe that has been patched by now?

I'll be returning to the party after I quit the first time a few hours in because I found that the two companions I had ruined the experience. They ate up my XP and had me restarting as they'd charge into a group of super mutants all willy nilly.

Does anyone have a suggestion on when you should pick up any team mates or should I just run solo? I found that they really made the game a hell of a lot easier but also a pain in the butt at the same time. I'll be going evil for my first play through so I know I can only get
Jericho
before I can progress past a certain point. Is there a certain level that is better for getting your team mates or do the expansions offer any new options for a partner?

I tried all of the companions except for the robot, and I found that the game is just much better going at it solo.

as for which version, haven't played the PS3 version, but played PC and 360. 360 is the way to go IMO.

the problems i've had with the DLC on PS3 are so bad that i quit playing it, not worth the effort for me even though it's one of my favorite games ever. i played Operation Anchorage and Broken Steel, and could not complete even one mission without my PS3 locking up entirely, freezing in the middle of combat for 1-2 minutes almost every time, having unusually long loading times (took literally 15min to open a door once! LOL), polygons glitching and stretching across the screen etc... absolutely mindboggling bugginess. i thought my PS3 was about to break or something, but no, it was simply the game's fault.

i love Fallout 3, but the DLC is 100% unplayable on my PS3. it's utter garbage. the worst coding i have experienced on a console in the 20 years i've been gaming. i lost all respect for Bethesda because of it. i've e-mailed them and demanded for a patch, and to my surprise they promised me they'd look into it. but who knows.. it's been months so they probably dont care.

so... dont be surprised if its completely unplayble for you or your dad too. be prepared for the worst :/

Thanks. Gamestop's sale was laughable so no purchase today :( I did a framerate search on gamefaqs & it seemed pretty bad in the dlc stuff primarily. Oh well, what can you do? :)

you can contact Bethesda. i e-mailed them and got a reply saying they're looking into it, but i doubt they'll go back to tighten up the code if only 1 person complains...

Right before activating the switch to open the vault, there is a door right behind you which is locked and requires a key. What is inside that door and where can I get the key from?

Thanks.

That's just the main entrance back into the vault. Don't worry about it now it will come into play a bit later if you play your cards right.

I the original F3 on the PS3. Can I just rent GOTY, transfer the extra mission packs, and not need anything other than the original F3 disk? I'd rather just do this than spent the extra 40 bucks.

You sure? Looks more like a place where they would store stuff rather than an entrance...

Edit: Video

The door that's to the right side of the player.

Today only all Fallout 3 DLC is 50% off on 360 as part of deal of the day, if you are still waiting to get these this is probably your best bet, at least pick up Broken Steel and Point Lookout.

WTF, I've been waiting for this for the PC version. *throws keyboard*

I got Mothership Zeta during the 50% off sale, I am about half way through the 2nd quest. Does it get any better? This DLC is pretty MEH so far.

Need a suggestion:

Should I kill Roy Phillips or should I convince Tenpenny to let the ghouls live in the tower? The Ghoul Mask sounds like a really useful item, but will anything negative happen if I let the ghouls come in (besides eventually all residents being murdered by Roy and his gang)? Is the mask worth it?

Oi I have a question about The Pitt.

When I went and talked to Ashur I didn't get my gear that was earlier taken from me because I had no room, convinced that I'd be able to grab it later.

Once finished free labor and wanted to leave The Pitt, I thought I'd get my gear back but the door the the Haven requires a key so I'm stuck there without my gear. Is there any way I can get it back?

I read here this "If you need more space for your equipment after getting everything you want in The Pitt, just leave it in the footlocker until you drop some stuff off at your house or apartment. Your items that got taken from you will stay in the footlocker until you take them no matter how long the wait. " but how do I do that? I need a key to the haven then? wut? :/

edit : nevermind, found it in the arena. I thought it was in Ashur's room :X

Hey guys, from your experience is it a good idea to kill the Brotherhood Outcasts? I just found a patrol on my way to
Vault 112
and decided to kill them since I really want their armor. Any drawbacks for doing this?

The
mask
is amazing.

It will be worth it every time you explore a dark area infested with ghouls and don't have to shit your pants in fear.

The Outcasts have an outpost with tons of gear inside. If you're friendly with them then you can trade items with them. But if your certain you want to their armor and weapons, you might as well head to their outpost and clear all of them out.

Oh, and you have to team up with the outcasts later during the Operation Anchorage missions. They'll be upset with you killing outcasts, but that won't prevent you from doing quests.

EDIT: As for the mask, it's a life saver against Feral Ghoul Reavers (In the broken steel expansion).

There hasn't been any word on a PSN DLC sale yet, has there?

Just beat Demon's Souls, and looking to take a break with another RPG, and Fallout 3 DLC would fit the bill nicely.

So I just bought the vanilla Fallout 3 (PS3) for $20 (actually, used trade-in credit, so yeah). I figured I can just get the DLC's over a period of time. Will I miss out on anything big by not having the DLC's right off the bat?

Get
the mask
(does that need to be spoilered?), it is awesome. That quest is a bit irritating, since there is no feelgood ending if you are after that sort of thing.

Not in my opinion, it was pretty mehtacular all round. Broken Steel and Point Lookout were much better than the others. YMMV of course.

Early game question spoiler:

So I ended up killing the leader of Vault 101 at the beginning of the game. What's the consequence? Should I restart? I'm not sure if I want to be a good guy or a bad guy.

Danke!

Not really, but definitely get Broken Steel before you hit level 20.

It will have an impact on a quest later in the game, but I don't think it's really a big deal if you want to go that route. Never did it myself.

Where's their outpost? The only thing I see is a Mister Gutsy and a tent full of ammo, but no power armor or anything like that. By the way, I re-loaded the section and now the BO won't show up anymore. It's either Raiders or Hunters now. :(

Oh well, I guess. I'll just have to get the power armor from the
You Gotta Shoot 'Em In The Head
quest.

Also, I didn't get the
Ghoul Mask
because I decided to kill the ghouls instead. My plasma rifle takes care of feral ghouls in one shot (Glowing Ones take about 2) and they don't really seem scary to me lol.

I killed him too , and I ended up being mankind's last hope :lol
Doesn't have much of an impact as it's really close to the beginning .

Lol, that's the point where I fell in love with this game.

I had no idea that it was the overseer (a.k.a. Amata's father) who was interrogating her. I just heard the abuses and thought I should lend a hand. So I pop around the corner and sneak attack his ass for a one shot kill. Next thing I hear is, "Daddy! No!" :lol It was such an "Oh, shit!" moment where the whole gravity of what I had just done hit me. Sure, he was an asshole, but I killed him right in front of his daughter with his gun, which she gave me under the condition that I would only use it when necessary. Felt kinda bad but I pressed on.

So, yeah, to answer your question, there are no major consequences for doing it. It doesn't lock you out of any future quests or anything. It's just a choice you make.

Sorry, i meant Fort Independence. Their outpost is for the Operation Anchorage quest.

Btw, Feral Ghoul Reavers are the most dangerous enemies in the game. Again, they'll only come in if you have the Broken Steel expansion.
