The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

Shishka made a really nice post about what happened with the 7o7 playlist which also includes insight into the grifball betrayal thing as well:

All of that would be very nice, were it so easy. Unfortunately we can't simply "fix" a single hopper, so I'm afraid this month is at a loss.

After spending some time rooting around, yelling at people, and cursing into the air, we've figured out what went wrong. See, we've changed the pipeline here such that, whereas before I was directly responsible for all updates to map variants and hopper changes, I now direct those changes which are then made by other people, so as to give me more time to work on Reach without completely abandoning Halo 3 Matchmaking, which no one here wants to do.

Unfortunately it seems there are still rough edges/loose ends/idiom describing incompleteness and the need for refinement in our new pipeline. A miscommunication, or series thereof, resulted in the updated maps being pulled down from file shares, grouped together, prepped, playtested, and approved (save a couple), but somehow not actually impelemented in the production environment.

If I lost any of you, the short version is that after all of our testing someone didn't push the button to add them to our public Matchmaking release, thus the return of the old maps in lieu of the updated ones. This is, incidentally, how Ranked Grifball ended up with betrayal booting and respawn penalties.

This sucks, simply put. For the authors and players because everyone was expecting refined content, and for us because we took resources away from Reach to make it happen and it didn't happen. On the bright side these changes are all set and ready for January, but that doesn't really resolve that it didn't happen when I said it would, and for that I apologize. All I can really offer is that in the future we're ironing out this new process and that we'll do our best to keep the line of communication from breaking.

So it seems they have a new process in place for playlist management. This maybe a temporary thing while Shishka's time is primarily focused on Reach or it could be a more permanent thing that'll extend into Reach's MM.

Anyways, I was surprised to see such a reasonable apology and really glad he was a little more transparent about the system. I don't know exactly why but the post made me feel a lot better about Bugnie's commitment to the forging community.

There's easter eggs in Mombasa Streets and in the campaign levels on the compact cars, or "Genet cars". They have license plates that reference characters in the Halo series.

HBO link.

I realized what the egg was, just wasn't sure if I actually knew what the plates said. :lol thanks for the link. Good stuff!

That was a pretty awesome response from him. That kind of "hey guys, here's the deal" was all the forging community ever wanted from him and never really got save for a few instances. I hope that kind of communication can continue, either through an intermediary or from Shishka himself, especially when there's nothing to apologize for. You're not alone in feeling good about that response, and I'm willing to bet that other forgers feel the same way. That kind of positive reinforcement can go a long way for ATLAS and the playlists in general.

good to see that he explained what happened. i mean it sucks and all but at least we know why.

Why can these updates only happen once a month? I don't understand that. Anyone?

You would think they could be like hey its a Tuesday lets throw a crazy playlist in and see if people like it. It isn't like people will stop playing Halo just because they didn't like 1 of the many playlists.

If Infinity Ward can do two playlist updates within a week of Modern Warfare 2 coming out then I'm sure it isn't an issue of Microsoft only allowing a certain amount of updates. It's on Bungie's back-end.

If they're not willing to update the playlists more regularly than once a month (which is absurd) for Halo 3 then hopefully they learn for Reach. :/

Yeah. Sounds like basic communication breakdown.

Shishka! I have business process design experience! (Okay, financial business process design, but it counts.) Hire me, and these woes will go away. I gots flowcharts.

Just wait until Activision charges 800 points for those two gametypes that are already on the disc but locked.

old people forget things, which is why this happened in the first place. :P

Eh, I'm always hesitant to compare CoD's playlist management to Halo's. Halo's seems incredibly more involved then CoD's. In CoD all they do is change the gametype, and even then the different gametypes don't even have different weapon starts or anything. In Halo you have CoD's gametype changes and on top of that:
Map variants
Weapon starts
Weapon placements
Playlist rank tracking
And you actually have to worry about playlist population because there's some form of skill-based matchmaking

Say what you will about how involved the management has been in Halo 3, it's still worlds easier then managing CoD's playlists.

Map variants True, but wtf is Atlas for then?
Weapon starts True (BR)
Weapon placements Meh, most maps have fine default weapon placements
Playlist rank tracking True
And you actually have to worry about playlist population because there's some form of skill-based matchmaking This is more about TrueSkill than MM updates, but that's another debate.

There are instances when there's a piece of geometry that needs to be fixed or blocked off, but for some reason that small fix needs to be put into MM the month afterward? It took a month to remove two fusion coils from Valhalla? Those types of updates should just be slipped in quickly since they can be dealt with/fixed quickly, not saved as a bullet point for a BWU every month.

Thats true when comparing them, Bungies playlists are a lot more in depth than IW's.

But the fact remains IW does more than one update a month. So its not that theres 1 a month restriction, its on Bungie's end that they only do 1 update a month (and even sometimes its every other month).

Not like I give a fuck, Instagib will never see MM. In fact a new interesting double exp seems out of the question before Halo Reach.

343PODCAST

Good interview guys. Lots of Reach teasers early on!

Guys, listen to this podcast. I haven't gotten to Cocop and Vocs interviews yet, but all of the interviews are cool.

Seconded, I miss the days of the big "Official Thread". So much easier to follow.

I delibertly avoided using "Official Thread" for the Reach reveal, that's best saved for Ghal and his future Official Reach thread/s.

Got around to listening to that 343 podcast and listened up to the interview with Cocop and Voc.

Hightlights:
  • Major Nelson called Cocop out on his incomprehensible dialect
  • Major Nelson described Voc's relationship with Halo as "unnatural" which is close enough to "disturbing" as I could possibly hope

Good stuff.

Any tips/help on finishing off the Halo 3 list?
Honestly, besides mercilessly camping, there's no good strategy for those last four. For post mortem, try to toss stickies on Orbital when you die. Hopefully you'll get lucky and stick someone and get the from the grave kill. Save this Film, you're going to have to get really lucky and play really bad kids. Have Fun Respawning you might be able to get in a Grifball weekend on Sandbox. And for Pull, just ruthlessly spawn the back ramps of Citadel with the shotty and mow down bk's in a social playlist.

Yeah...worst thing about Save This Film...played a flag game on sandbox and got 16 kills no deaths we won..but no perfection...apparently it only applies to slayer games.

You also have to win the slayer game. BTB is best. Some of the Sandbox variants seemed better suited to get it. Also, Swat is a good place to try for the extermination one.

True...I guess now I just need to play with a few people that are half decent.

Lol...with the amount of time I have already sunk into Halo...anyhow just hoping to get them done by the time the Reach Demo hits...or worst case when Reach hits.

Maybe I'm just suggesting it because it's where I got it, but the ODST playlist is great for Save this Film. I had a team of 2 other Gaffers (think it was 2) and we got paired up against some guests on Midship, and after I got to 15 they protected me (thanks).
Have Fun Respawning is fairly easy in Grifball. It's cheap, but whatever.
Pull: Classic CTF. Go into throwback and get this, then camp your side.
Post Mortem is a pure luck achievement. Throw grenades as you die and hope for the best.

All I personally have left is Blades of Fury, just haven't had time to play Oddball on Midship.

There are several games Action Sack where you can get this Achievement. Grifball is one but you can also get it several of the other games.

Speaking of which, Shishka was asking about Leapfrog Alpha. I don't now if he read the response.

Shishka seems to have no problem popping into the Reach thread to post inane comments. Would've been nice if he answered community questions about his job performance for the past 2 years.

I'm down. I've got a whopping 5 games of Firefight, and I still need the Deja Vu achievement. GT is squidhands

Seriously?

I'm not Shishka, but I sure as hell wouldn't respond to the shit you guys post here.

Nor should you have to explain even that.

Up for Rally Point (either) and Last Exit :).

You must have never spent any time on B.net proper, where the community playlist manager spends the majority of his time going into off topic pointless threads (that should have already been locked by their army of volunteer moderators) to take cheap fish-in-a-barrel shots at absolute console retards, all while the stickied Optimatch related topics fester for months on end without resolution :lol

Right, you'd just swing by to take a dump every now and then, like a true professional with way too much on your plate :D
