I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft's Xbox Division made its first profit from Halo 3's release.

MS is still losing money on Xbox 360s? I thought their profitable now. no? maybe the whole 1.2 billion dollar thing set them back, but that was a lose last quarter i believe.

The hardware is turning a profit. Its Microsofts Xbox Division that is yet to turn one. Its expected that this year/early next when that will start to happen.

man.... I just spent a giant buttload of hours listening to the entirety of the I Love Bees DVD ISO that was made and available on the OP.

Seriously, I am just blown away. Holy fuck.

Wow.

Seriously good stuff, I loved it. I loved it all. I loved the characters, the voices, the acting, everything. Oh my god.

This needs to be made into an audio novel, like they have in Japan. It was so good.
I went back and listened to the properly sequenced audio from ILB a few months ago and was floored as well. They crafted one hell of a well-written story, and excellent acting to boot. Some of the characters - and their fates - have stayed with me. Good stuff.

No, I don't think the hardware is turning a profit (yet). I remember in early June or so, Microsoft stated that their losses went down due to decreased Xbox 360 hardware sales.

But MaX, if Microsoft hadn't done the $1 billion charge, then their losses would've been about $100 million. Down from recent quarters.

This much I can say...

We have been playing for over 12 hours straight (it is almost 4 am here now)... and I am still going strong

12 - 3 = 9

Short confirmed.

so how exactly is the xbox division losing money if the hardware and software are profitable?

Well, I started Halo today on Heroic, got up to the Library a minute ago and took a break for the day. The game is still so damn good to be so old, pretty amazing game.

Even if we assume that number is accurate, thats still right in line with the other two games. Halo 2 took me between 8 and 9 hours, and many of Halo 1's ten levels were close to an hour long (exceptions being The Pillar of Autumn, Silent Cartographer, Guilty Spark, Keyes (debatable), and The Maw).

Yeah I know, I was just hoping for a longer experience this time. I'm sure 10 hours will be fine.

I think the kicker is that theres so much more replayability this time around. Four player coop, saved films, skulls that reward you for finding them way more than the ones in Halo 2 did (God only knows how long it took me to get I Would Have Been Your Daddy to spawn), are all actually making me question how much multiplayer I'll ever feel like playing.

Now, I need to go pee. I've been holding it, and the last few recordings and the "Heroes" chapter sent shivers. I wonder when the NYC folks will be back.
I Love Bees was a good time. Did you follow Iris? Cause those audio transmissions are neat.

This is how it all Begins!

It's worth watching the videos. Although with HBO and ABO being closed until Halo 3 is out, don't expect the 4th to come out soon. The thread should give you all you need though.

It's no ILB but it was a fun way to pass the summer.

You aren't making the wait easier :(

Hardware is a losing margin for MS. Software is a gaining margin. Whatever amount they lost due to hardware, they make [most] of it back from software and Xbox Live/XBL Marketplace sales. As hardware production costs go down, the gap thins from money made from hardware to money made from software. Once the hardware production costs go down a significant margin, software sales eclipse the hardware loss margin resulting in a profit (considering they've covered up their cost for revenue).

Anyways, I'm done. This is for Halo 3 discussion :P

So, the commercial tomorrow is completely different from the ad shown today right?
I believe they are the same, but we may see a longer version of it. The one to be shown tomorrow morning is supposed to be a "preview" of the final ad. My theory is there's a 30 and 60-second version. We saw the former, and on Sunday the latter debuts on TV.

i dont think so. That ad leaked today, not revealed.

edit: and what Ghaleon said sounds about what I expected.

Nah, not really into ARGs, and the one that I'm experiencing on a semi-weekly basis is a story that I'm unsure as to whether or not is true. Someone said it felt like an ARG, but not so sure.

Yeah, the story with Iris was decent though. Confirmed a lot for the Halo series too. The Ark was built 100,000 years ago, Forerunners =/= Humans, Forerunners didn't make the flood etc.

Just tossing it out there.

I knew you still loved Halo 3....undercover fanboys man
Did you beat BIOSHOCK yet?!

Can you give any hints on length? I'm sure Frankie or Luke aren't looking. ;)

When press ask us how long it takes on heroic, we have no good answer. A certain good Halo 2 player took 18 hours. Another blasted through in 11.

There is no useful average. And there are many ways to approach it.

I will say this time and time again - if you have never played Halo, play on normal. If you have played Halo, play on Heroic - and not because it's harder, but because it's more. More achievements, more encounters, more weapons, more vehicles, more bad guys.

And second time you play it, turn on some skulls.

On co-op, I reccomend Heroic for giggles and Legendary for the challenge and the achievements and the salty yet hetero man-love that comes from that bond.

That image never gets old. The creator really wanted you to know it was a Microsoft product.
