That is just sad. What a sad little man. Proving once again something is fundamentally wrong with our patent system. Anyways how is this even applicable. I though you cant trademark, register anything so common as a single word.

First off patent != trademark. That out of the way...

Common words are trademarkable. It can be tough, but it is possible. Trademarks are domain specific, too, so something in an unrelated field could potentially use the name Edge if it's not going to create confusion in the marketplace. What can happen, though, is you can lose that trademark if a) you don't defend it (which means you are required to do these types of C&Ds, lawsuits) or b) the use of that word, in that domain, becomes generic.

Has anybody tried out this game Noiz2sa? I think it just went up yesterday or the day before. I haven't tried it yet, but I bought it solely because of how cool the art style looks (The $.99 price tag didn't hurt either). From watching a video it looks like it's a top down shooter.

I didn't although it does look cool. My problem was that dev put out Simutrans (for free albeit) but then never worked on it which pissed me off.

Seems like rRootage which was another cool free shooter which could have been great if it had been worked on.

They're both ports of Kenta Cho/ABA Games freeware PC titles. Kenta, in case you're not familiar with him, is amazing. An absolute genius. I don't know anything about the guy who has ported them, though.

rRootage is an okay port, but I agree that it's a bit lazy to just get it on the platform and then never update it. I mean, really - no sound this long after release? Yikes. Hopefully, seeing as he's charging for this one, we'll see some work put into it.

Zenonia up to #9 on the games list. Everbody thing above it is either 2.99 or below or the Sonic Game.

I'll guess that will be its high rank but still impressive and it should hopefully demonstrate to devs that rpgs are indeed coveted on the platform. I hope it stays up there for awhile.

How don't know how to post links, but Disney Pixar Up is out on the App store! It's a 2D game. How do you take pictures with the iphone again? I'll snap a few screen caps and show off the game.

BeatRider Touch is out.

For those not familar it's basically a rhythm music action game ala Tap Tap Revenge that generates itself based on the beat of the song. It achieves this by you uploading the tracks you want to play via a PC. And since 3.0 doesn't give devs the ability to read music tracks on the iphone itself to generate beats and visualizations, this is the only game of this type we will be seeing for awhile. I'll give this post a final bump when it releases.

Beat Rider looks pretty...eh. Why can't we just get a port of Phase? That game fucking killed it.

The more the merrier I say but somebody has to do the work and create the interface for how you create a game that reads your music on the iphone on a machine that doesn't allow you to read directly from the ipod. Nobody has gotten off their ass yet and done that until beatrider so I'm not gonna slag off the only guys who so far have been willing to put in the work.

That being said at least there is a lite version so nobody has to get suckered into buying something they won't like. I always like it when lite version and the full version hit at the same time so nobody is screwed.

Yeah I still miss Phase (and my 80 GB of space). This looks like a good effort, but only 20 songs is kind of low. I wonder what the restriction is.

i still wonder about apple nt allowing apps to access music, especially since classics can. I assume it is because they are afraid of "homebrew" apps that will lead to media pirating.

Yeah, sorry - you're right. It's a great effort for these guys to have done as much as they have.

Phase was the reason I kept my 5th gen iPod as long as I did - right up until the release of the 2nd gen Touch. Amazing game. I think one of the things that doesn't appeal to me about Beatrider is how generic it looks - Phase was really interesting, visually.

Apple need to get Harmonix back in there, and they need to have full access to reading from the iPod.

Well they already missed the boat on the one a quick check of Cydia reveals quite a few apps which allow just this. At least if they were going through the App Store they would be vetted by Apple.

It's been one month now since I uploaded my game on the App Store... I'm still waiting for my contract to go live, while the app has been approved and it's ready to sale.
That's really frustrating.. :(

Info on Doom from the man himself. Very cool that he is actively involved in the iphone stuff. No online multipayer but then I just sort of expect us to get screwed on that front nowadays. Frustrating that devs assume we aren't using our home networks and instead want to play wifi-games since most of us aren't 7 anymore or work in an office environment where everybody else has iphones to play with. Otherwise good news.

Thanks for posting that. Very interesting read. I can't wait for Doom on the iPhone.

Carmack is a god.

This happened to a friend in the UK. You need to check your work hasn't been lost, or your billing stuff isn't confused. They lose contracts every now and then too.

Hope you get it sorted dude.

(I'm really hoping I don't come across douche'y here, but..)
This is currently my favorite thread, mainly because of the great impressions & tips on *GOOD* iPhone/iPod games to pick up. I've dumped a bit of cash in games recommended here, and I've been very happy about it. (It's also very cool to see the perspective of a few actual iPhone/iPod devs, that's awesome)

Thing is, at this point the thread is going back to the actual thread title: just a thread about iPhone/iPod games, whether they're good or not.

The posts that contain an iTunes link, some videos, some reviews, and a personal take on the game (or even just a personal take on a game) are the ones I LOVE...posts just linking to a game release are less helpful (although definitely within the scope of the thread).

Is there a separate thread that concentrates on impressions & recommendations?
If not, should I start one?

Bonus question: How quickly is someone going to link my lazy ass to a search?

p.s. STILL playing The Creeps...just an incredible deal for $0.99. Tried out GeoDefense Lite, and I just can't get around not getting any kind of recognition for completing a level w/out losing a man. Unless someone can confirm that you actually do get something for not letting anything through, I'm gonna pass on the full version. Oh, and I can't get the GF to stop playing Bookworm on hers...10 different games on her iPhone, and she can't be bothered to even check'em all out =P

Well not eveyone buys the games and its sort of just turned into that. Idk maybe we need a separate thread discussing and showing iphone releases.

As for Geodefense you will rarely if ever complete a level without letting any creeps by. Its hard.

There are a few threads already littered around the board that do this on iphone games. They start off with a burst of posts and then die and everybody comes back to this thread. The reason is because you need an active investment in that thread for it happen and for it to stay active. I was going to do such a thread but then I realized I would be spending my entire life posting and updating on iphone games and decided against that. :(

Honestly the best bet instead realistically instead of starting another thread that dies on gaf is to instead become an active member of the Touch Arcade Forums. There are more people on that forum than in this thread and they buy a lot more game. So it's much better environment for looking at the market in a sort of comprehensive manner because they end up playing everything over there and serving as a test market.

I view this thread as a cull thread. I try to sort of highlight the better or more interesting games rather than trying to highlight everything which would be impossible and probably not worthwhile

Anyway here are two such threads

My god, finally spent some time with Zenonia, and I want to rip my ears off. Yes, I know you can turn off the music, but music is so key for my enjoyment of RPGs. Whoever thought having the overworld music be three seconds long and loop constantly needs to really stop with the ideas, pronto.

Other than that, it's pretty fun. D-pad controls are unfortunate but sadly required it seems.

Tried BeatRider. It's fun.

I don't know if it's a limitation of the free version, but I got a score of over 1 mil for the training song on Crazy, but it didn't upload it (even though I told it to). I'd have the highest score. :(

Awesome, thx Stoney (just recommended it to a buddy, who was kinda baffled when he couldn't find it).

Also, Parachute Panic paid for itself in one play-through...very cool & fun game =)
(that poor shark...)

What are the best rpgs on the iPhone? I keep seeing Zenonia mentioned, and Underworlds looked cool on the app store too. Any other suggestions? I need to buy a game for this thing already, and I want an rpg (action or turn-based). PEACE.

I have to recommend Zenonia for an action RPG. There are hang ups to the game that really make it hit or miss for some people, but if you can get around them and they don't really bother you (on screen d-pad and a middling translation from Korean to English) then the game is pretty excellent.

I bought Underworlds expecting a grand ol' time, but... haven't really touched it much. Maybe it's just me, but I find the limited character development (skills, etc.) a letdown after all the comparisons to Diablo.

OR alternatively it could just be that I'm obsessed with reading books on my iPod at the moment.

The Quest it's turn based 1st person.

I would love Sega even more if they brought phantasy star 4 to the idevice, since sonic is emulated from a rom they have no excuse for bringing it over :P

Dungeon Master is awesome but from what I recall the combat is not turn based.
And there's no overworld. It's like an action game version of Wizardry.

So It's different from the Quest.
