I'm finally getting off my ass and making a real recommendation thread that I'll post tonight hopefully so we can transfer all the recommendation stuff away from this thread which tends to derail this thread constantly.

You should really start your own blog/website. But until then... I guess the recommendation thread will do.:D

Okay, so zenonia rocks. The controls took a bit of getting used to, but they did a good job of having your guy auto target, so all's good.

Can you spell out what you have in mind a little more?

While I'll probably blindly walk into it anyways, how are ancient games long abandoned by their devs holding up in OS 3.0? I realize no matter what a few are bound to have problems but is it actually the majority of title not specifically updated to be OS 3.0 compatible?
The only app I've had a problem with is 1vs100. Everything else is fine

Basically just a general listing broken down into some categories with links to them on the app store. The initial listing is relatively unimportant as I won't pretend to try to hit every good or excellent game on the app store which is impossible of course anyway. The important bit is that I will update the initial post (adding or removing things perhaps) on a weekly basis (or some timeframe) based on what comes out and what the feedback in the thread is as people talk about games and consensus emerges on good games. The problem was we've had threads like this before but they get out of date rather quickly because the first few posts aren't updated so someone makes another thread a few months later and the process is repeated again which is what I'm trying to eliminate.

And we need a thread to essentially remove the on going cycle as new people buy the idevices and ask what they should buy that can dominate this thread.

I know it's sort of janky to post your own game as a recommendation, but if you just got a 3GS and are looking to play around with the accelerometer, check out our game Taxiball.

It's basically Crazy Taxi meets Marble Madness, controlled with the tilt sensors. Got Friend Lists, global leaderboards, all that fun stuff. The upcoming 1.1 update (currently being held hostage at Apple (for weeks, now)) adds a couple new levels. The plan is to constantly add new levels to the game, to make sure the value you get for your 0.99 (2.99 when we eventually raise to full price, whenever that is) is mindboggling.

Anyway - since there's a million new phones out there, I figured it'd be worth a plug again. ;)

On the GS, it's definitely a faster experience - loading times are way shorter...

Thanks!

Rolando
It's clearly inspired by Loco Roco, you roll your Rolandos around to make it to the exit safely. Really charming and fun, tilt controls and touch the screen to select Rolandos and jump.

I was coming in to post that I didn't think I had seen enough praise for this game in this thread. It seems like a blatant loco roco ripoff (minus some of the mechanics), but I'd argue it gets a bye on that because it's on a system made for this sort of game. It's $5.99 on the app store, which is a bit high compared to all of the really awesome $.99 games out there, but it's a lot of fun.

Incidentally, anyone interested should scour their nearby bestbuy for free Rolando app store cards. They're probably all gone in most places now, but I managed to find a lone one hanging out near the ipods. It might be ad supported, but free is free. Just ring it up and they'll activate it, no cost.

is the oregon trail really worth it?

It's just a port and tweaked version of the Oregon Trail that Gameloft has for Java. I played it on the Samsung Instinct and it's an alright game. There are minigames everywhere, and none of them are too fun (shoot the rabbits! Hammer the nail! Steer the boat!), but none of them suck either. It's a strictly average game where they turned the source material into something kinda different that you may like or dislike. I'd value it at 1.99, it's nothing great...atleast in my opinion.

Has anyone tried Hero of Sparta on the 3GS? I figured it'd be all smooth, but its still has frame rate problems.

I'm about 30 minutes in and I haven't noticed any issues. There have been quite a few large battles so far and it's held up well, maybe I'm not paying close enough attention but it's definitely subtle if it's happening.

I'v been playing Low Grav Racer lately. I dont even have the full game but for some reason I keep coming back to the demo for this.

I didn't know about this, thanks for posting the pic which is what drew my attention...getting the lite version now.

edit: The controls took a little while to adjust, seemed too sensitive at first, but this is a cool game especially for 1.99 (was expecting 5.99). I just bought it, thanks for the heads up.

Bought Bejeweled 2 today. I have never played it before, and I really like it. Very simple / clean presentation, simple match 3 play with a few different game modes. 'Timed mode' is my favorite, small timer on the bottom runs down and you need to quickly get matches to increase the meter to survive. PopCap just knows how to bring a nice level of polish.

For only $3, pretty damn fun game.

Just a note for you out there - Taxiball's going up to its full price of $2.99 TONIGHT at midnight (PST)!

Look, I'll be totally honest - it's likely going to drop again when our 1.1 update finally gets through Apple. So if you miss it at 99 cents now, you'll be able to get it for that price in the future. But if you want it now, and cheap, get it before midnight tonight!

Thanks!

I went with EDGE, but I still enjoyed the Zen Bound demo, I'll get the full game eventually.
Isotope and Peggle are now my two favorite iPhone games at the moment.
Seriously, if you haven't checked out Isotope yet, get the demo now.

Think I may invest in a good quality webcam so I can record some iDevice games being played, some games out there lack videos which really show off the app or even gameplay, FAST for example has a nice trailer video but f-all gameplay stuff, might be worth my time making them if people find interest.

Was thinking of making some sort of frame so the camera can sit connected to the device, so when I tilt the camera follows.

Let me know what you think! But play a few levels first, not just one.

I suddenly have the urge to play Edge now too.

Taxiball is a must purchase!

You guys did a fantastic job with that game. I wish I could buy it five times.

Wow! Thanks! I wish you could buy it five times, too!!! LOL.

Seriously, though - thanks. That's a really great thing to hear. :)

Castle of Magic is AWESOME. My few complaints are that the Dpad is a "hit the corners of the circle" button dpad and not a "drag the circle" analog dpad, and I think the analog stick-like dpads are easier to use.

The boss battles seem to follow a similar formula, though not same exact.

Other than that it's super fun and charming. It's not super easy, either.

I purchased Castle of Magic the other day and it's a pretty good game. I only had a chance to play the first two stages but I was having fun. The graphics and music are really good and it's pretty charming. I get a kick out of when the little dude transforms and goes "ROBIN HOOOOD!"

One nice little touch I noticed about the game is that it orients the screen in a way that your palm isn't covering up the iPhones speaker. Thought that was pretty cool.

Haha I have a "thing" for supporting fellow GAF iPhone Devs, that said, I would've bought taxiball anyways, shit's pretty good.

Also Monster Ball is fucking awesome!

Also, I didn't know this, but I avoided Puzzle Quest because it was 10 bucks per chapter, now its 8 bucks for BOTH chapters, and I've never played puzzle quest before so it seemed like a no brainer.

Mass Effect's top-down gameplay screens remind me of Team 17s Alien Breed. Ah, good times.

Some games seem to be locked into crappy framerate, probably to make it at least be consistent if it can't be high enough. Same thing with Zen Pinball btw. It's the only game I've seen with bad framerate that didn't gain any performance boost whatsoever from 3GS.

I like the way they animated the d-pad. That's one of the best virtual dpad I've seen so far.

Bought
the-sims-3-logo.png

today.

It's very well done. You make your own Sims, you redecorate your house, you perform quests (umm, 'wishes'), you get a job and just generally mess around. In good looking 3D (you can zoom out to watch most of town even). Haven't played too much yet but there's promises of attractions like fishing and cooking among other things in addition to general Sims life, seems like a 'full' title. Well presented and nice interface.

Damn iTunes crashed after the download and now it's not there. If I go back and hit buy again will it recognize that it's purchased? I see it in my history but no download link from there.

Guys I just typed up a thorough impressions of Mass Effect with the web app and it's not here. >:o

Not doing that again. Basically, great presentation but generic gameplay, too much is handled by the game (targeting and shooting is auto). There are buttons on the right hand side and you can tap to target but you always feel like you're overriding the autopilot. Just tilt to move and the game plays itself, and the levels are room by room, destroy everyone in there and move on.

Average. 3/5, being generous. Just an ok game in a AAA presentation.

I just bought it, I'll see how it plays. Hopefully there is a connection with mass effect 2.

Anyone played a lot of games with virtual d-pads or sticks? What game do you think did it best? So far none of the games I've worked on has gone that route (though Atari Football used a virtual trackball that you couldn't see), but I'm thinking of a potential project down the road that could use some sort of virtual controller.

I've found that Assassin's Creed definitely does the analog stick the best. (So does Hero of Sparta since it seems to be the same)

Then Terminator, it's a little different from AC or HoS but still good.

The best route to go is a virtual analog stick like these games, it controls the easiest.

Yes sir.

I think that kills my purchase of mass effect.
