No, current games don't yet approach the limits of iPhone's graphics... not that its OpenGL ES 1.1 API even makes available some of the hardware's most interesting potential.
Overall, though, the iPhone's drivers, API, and programming environment are relatively quite fine tuned.
Hey guys, I just got about 20 new apps/games for my iPhone. (Christmas is awesome.) I figured I'd throw up a few impressions.
Keep in mind I'll be putting a bit more in-depth impressions with some obligatory scores up in this thread later on.
If someone else makes a post there, that is. I'm not all about triple-posting.
I just played Hero of Sparta for about a half hour. First off, I'm just impressed overall with this game. I had no idea the iPhone could legitimately handle a 3rd-person action/adventure game. The controls are pretty simple... There's a virtual analog stick on the left which plays similarly to the Super Mario 64 DS analog stick, only MUCH better, and then there are two virtual "A" and "B" buttons on the right. Then, every once and a while, there will be some quick-time buttons that pop up all over the screen to perform a quick-time block/dodge/attack. Not bad.
The graphics are fantastic, and are truly better than some of the best N64 stuff I've played. However, the framerate isn't very solid. It hovers around a constant 23-25 fps, and dips as low as 13-14, but sometimes runs as smooth as 30. It's certainly playable, but not ideal. The actual fighting isn't bad, it's pretty basic... You slash around, and you have a few different moves. Every once and a while a quick-time-event will pop up while you're attacking, especially with big monsters. The block button is useful if you actually use it, too. Still, being an iPhone game, sometimes your button press might not be recognized. With that being said, it's still mighty impressive and seems like a pretty beefy game. I'm glad I purchased it.
I also bought UNO. This is just UNO, period. You can play online, which is awesome, but there aren't many players on, normally. Even when there are, people can drop out in the middle of the game which ends in a connection error. No chat, either.
Trism is pretty sweet. It's a simple puzzle game, pretty addictive. A few different modes. Silky-smooth animation, and an interesting slide mechanic. Reminds me of a cross between Meteos and Dialhex.
Spawn is a dumb little do-nothing app that has little beams of color fly around on the screen. Honestly, I love this thing. It's so pointless, yet so awesome. I think it was only a buck, so buy it. It's fun.
DigiDrummer is another drum machine app. It's currently the best one I've used. I like it, worth a buck.
The two new Tap Tap games are also worth buying. Nothing really new with them, but I love supporting those developers, considering their free version is so beefy.
Acetennis is pretty cool. I love the other games that this developer makes, like the online Checkers, Chess, and especially Pool. Online mode is fun, but I haven't learned the mechanics very well yet. I keep getting my ass kicked.
I bought a bunch of other games, like Brothers In Arms, Deal or No Deal, Yahtzee, 1112, and a ton of other crap, but I just haven't had time to try them out yet. Keep a look-out on the other thread where I'll put up more impressions on them.
I got it and played it a bit. I was going to give impressions and stuff in this thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=342063&page=2 but I don't want to triple post. But I guess if people want that thread dead, it should be. =P
Lots of good software out there now. It's amazing how much stuff has released in just a few months.
I'm hopeful we can get our second and third games out in the next month. We have two neat ideas that I think have a chance to be big. Day jobs tend to get in the way of fun work, though.
For anyone looking for a Sudoku game, Enjoy Sudoku Daily is the best Sudoku game I've played on iPod Touch, or any portable handheld for that matter. Simple UI, good hints and notes system that auto-updates your notes when you place the actual number on the grid, and the free version (Daily) gives you 1 new puzzle a day. You can get the full game (Enjoy Sudoku) if you want to play more than 1 puzzle a day.
The only downside is that the game might look ugly for some people, but gameplay over visuals wins in this case. Best portable Sudoku game by far.
I bought some games yesterday (it's been a while).
Asphalt Racing Something or Other - Man, I wish I didn't buy this game. It's okay for a mobile game, but I'd rather pick up my PSP and play Ridge Racer. Controls are a little off, my car keeps drifting, and to top it off, the sound effects--especially when drifting--are grating.
TS Tennis - Sorry, I don't remember the whole name, this is how the icon appears. Anyhoo, my absolute favorite game after Bejeweled. It's like a low-low-low-budget Virtua Tennis but also pretty fun for just a few bucks (after you get used to the controls).
Brothers in Arms - Splurged and got it. Surprised at how good it is for a mobile game, it's just like a DS game (or better?). I think it's pretty short though-- I finished the first mission yesterday afternoon and from what I remember from glancing at the menu, there are only 4 missions or something?
Think I might get Hero of Sparta and Tap Tap Dance this weekend. Where's my damn Monopoly, EA? I asked that the other time I posted in this thread and that was months ago.
Reign of Swords Lite is now free. I suggest you all try it out. Look past the basic graphics (okay, it's not Fieldrunners, big deal!), and it's a fantastic game.
Hey Guys, a game I worked on was recently released on the App Store . It is called WackyLands Green, it consists of 3 small and funny games. If anyone wants to check it out the appstore link is:
I'm hooked on Monopoly World Edition right now, it's such a great version for the iPhone.
I hate to think how much I've spent on Apps right now... and I still want to check out Brothers in Arms and Sparta.
I BEAT SUPER MONKEY BALL! I BEAT SUPER MONKEY BALL! I BEAT SUPER MONKEY BALL! I BEAT SUPER MONKEY BALL!
Wow. Finally, after weeks of desperately trying to get those controls down, I finally beat that game to its fullest. Man, that took forever. I'm in love with Monkey Ball 1 and 2 for the Cube and Monkey Ball DS, and honestly, this is the closest thing to those old-school *GOOD* Monkey Balls since then, minus the awful controls. But, I'll tell you what, once you get those controls at least semi-down, it's a fantastic game. When I originally bought it, I regretted it. Not anymore.
Damn, I can't believe I beat that game. Now I want more stages. =|

This is the first game that Adult Swim's released on the iPhone/iPod Touch. (I'm the games producer for the flash games on the web site, but I'm very proud of this one going up.)

It's $4.99. 30 levels -- 27 regular plus 3 secret (I dunno wtf the reviewer who said it's very short is on... game takes awhile to finish even if you know what you're doing).
Picture's a bit jpeg artifacty--looks smoother than that.
Just bought it. Seems a little overpriced for a flash game port, but since I love Trauma Center so much and there's nothing else filling that void on the app store right now (Dr. Awesome doesn't count)...

You don't want to get me started on App Store pricing. :lol All of the people thinking that anything over $0.99 is overpriced is going to kill the whole market eventually. They're basically encouraging shovelware, as any well though out projects aren't going to be feasible at $0.70 profits per unit.
Even at $3.99, we only get $2.80 per unit. I doubt anyone would miss my software if I deemed the App Store too risky, but there are some big name, quality developers scaling back or dropping out completely.

You're right. And it really is going to kill the App Store eventually. There will still be a few developers, like Gameloft, that crank out some higher production apps, but I hate having to sift through the mounds of garbage to find buried "high priced" gems.
It's basically what's happening to the Wii right now. Fantastic development platform covered in shit because of low-cost/low-profit projects.

Congrats man. I never thought I would beat that last level, but I did eventually. I loved the game from the get go, I find that if you're having trouble with the controls, it's a lot easier with GonGon or MeeMee.
Edit: Space DeadBeef is awesome, I can't believe it's free. What a weird name though.
