any recomendations for longer games that would be good on a flight?

I have a DS, but I'm only going to be gone a few days and would prefer to leave it behind. I own Nova and Civ Rev which are both longer games.. but would like something new to try.

The rest of my games are little 5-10 minute pick up and play sort of deals.

Maybe Rayman?
How is the Mass Effect game? Story good?
Maybe an RPG of some sort?

the controls aren't too bad, obviously not being able to "feel" a control stick doesn't help but I am yet to encounter anything too frustrating... some camera issues which were also present in the dreamcast version I played.
the one big control issue I have is locking on to enemies, you have to punch the enemy and spead your fingers as if you are zooming a photo, taking your fingers off the "stick" or "buttons" is a bit sucky, but the frustrating bit is it takes me many attempts to get a lock on, I take hits while i'm fucking around trying to get a lock on... also once you kill the enemy you are still locked on to something, so you gotta stand there and pinch the screen 'till you're free again... it's really annoying.

it runs nicely and looks pretty good! not up to dreamcast quality but it actually isn't that far off, the textures don't look as blurry as the N64 screens i've seen.

the excellent soundtrack in pretty much intact, it doesn't really loop properly sometimes, and the track activation events seem a little iffy at times, meaning an action track after will continue after you've completed the action event for example.
I have found some sound effects have changed or aren't there aswell, you won't notice if you've never played the game, but an example is running on rope no longer results in the creaky/squeaky sound effect, or you won't get the little chime when you get all the times red health orbs.

is it worth a buck?
fuck yes!!
rayman 2 is awesome... and... IT'S A BUCK!!!
get it now!!!!!!!!!

Hah, yeah, for a $1, I'm not sure what I'm thinking. Thanks for the impressions.

well, I can play sword and poker 2 for over an hour straight - easily.

other usual suspects: peggle, plants vs. zombies, tetris, puzzle quest.

perhaps a dungeon crawler type game like underworlds or dungeon hunter

I prefer iPhone games that don't rely on too much precision so most of my pics are puzzle/ strategy.

you could also pick up a well regarded RPG like Chaos Rings.

I'm typically in the same boat. I don't want to play games on my phone for hours on end either so I don't have too much that lasts a long time.

I own plants v zombies, but I just can't play a puzzle game (or tower defense game) for more than a few levels at a time before getting bored. Even good ones.

How about secret of monkey island? that could last you a while. dunno if you have any nostalgia for lucas arts adventures but that one's a classic.

Anyone want to play some words with friends? No cheating, please.

I'm Dacvak on WWF

Just curious if anyone has played Pocket God (I think?) The one that's sort of a puzzler about elements. Getting good reviews and sounds kinda good, but I almost don't trust app store reviews at this point.

Just wondering, how many loading screen messages does Tilt To Live have? I've been playing it for a while now, and haven't gotten a single repeat yet (at least not that I can remember)...

Edit: Just after I posted this, I started seeing repeats. Figures... :lol

Here's a tip: it's not a game. In that The Sims is not a game, it's more like a Tamagochi (kinda). I learnt that AFTER I bought it :/

It's more like a toy and exercise in how well you can logically permute 100 different items with one another. It drew out the completionist in me, so I spent a few hours with it, though I'm not sure if I could classify as being all that fun.

I'm sort of kicking myself, since I had a similar idea a year and a half ago and just never got around to starting it.

I wish there was a quest like system to Doodle God.. telling me a few elements to create. Right now I'm just randomly combining shit hoping to get a new element

Wow. So happy to finally be able to play the Quest the way it was intended. Now that the iPhone 4 patch has hit, it runs almost 3x as fast as before. The game's like a cross between Elder Scrolls and Might & Magic or Eye of the Beholder. Open world, single PC, and stats/skills/quests focused like TES but with the grids and turn-based nature of M&M or EotB!

PocketGamer has put on a pretty damn fun competition at their website, and I'm pretty happy to say that Fruit Ninja and Australia is doing well!

iPhone World Championships

Vote for Fruit Ninja at the iPhone World Championships! We're in the semi finals, up against Chaos Rings. We really need the support of the Fruit Ninja fans to take this bad boy down, so if you wanted to head over to the official voting page and give us a nod that would be awesome!

Worst dollar I have ever spent. Deleted it about 2 days after I bought it.

It isn't a game. It's like a collection of little mini games. But they aren't really games. It's like a collection of small point and click adventure things that don't accomplish anything. Like, oh, hand this guy the stick, and then he fishes. Get this guy to start a fire, then you can cook the fish. Then give the fish to this guy and he eats it. Then.... *nothing*. Eating the fish doesn't accomplish anything.. you just get to watch him eat the fish.

There are about 5-6 screens that let you do 3-4 different things along those lines.

It's sort of like a cross between a Tamagotchi and a pointless point and click adventure.. except imagine that your tamagochi dies every 5 seconds because the only mildly entertaining thing you can do is kill the little buggers.

They added a little mini game that is a complete knock off of canabalt.. so I guess that's a thing?

It sounds like he is talking about doodlegod, which is totally different than pocket god. I just bought doodlegod and you are mixing and matching elements trying to create new ones. There isn't much to the game other than discovery, but the interface and presentation are top notch. It will at least keep me entertained for an hour or two.

Here's a flash version of the game for anyone that wants to try before buying...

Flick Kick Football update has been resubmitted (we yanked it last week because we found an audio issue).

Includes the following

* All new Bullseye mode!
* Double tap to skip goal camera
* You can now set goal camera off/on
* New Mode Achievements & Leaderboard

Has there been an improvement in the registering of skill shots too? I've found a few which I would swear were all good but weren't. Otherwise, it's a stellar title!

Dammit, now I'm torn between supporting Australia and choosing the better game. :P

You guys got real unlucky being put up against Chaos Rings.

edit - "better" probably wasn't the best choice or words but it is a super-slick mini-game going up against an RPG beast.

One big annoyance with Football, on Time Attack the replays are a waste of time. The time bonuses are kind of pointless when most of it is used to show a replay.

And just curious, is Field Goal pretty much done with or could that get some updates in the future? More point/time bonus variation would be nice, kind of like Football's skill shots or Madden's kicking minigame:

zxaetw.jpg

(also in that shot is multiplayer, you could make it like Baseball Slugger, but with all the glory of field goal kicking!)

My fav games atm:

Wolf Boy
wolfboy.jpg

Just discovered this and fell in love with it. Gorgeous and fun action rpg-ish side-scroller. Been craving for an iPhone game like this that could charm me just as much as Ragnarok Online did back in the day. This is it.

Speed Forge
mzl.uiqxumbz.320x480-75.jpg

Smooth framerate when you disable 'motion blur' (how is it with motion blur on the iPhone 4?), awesome graphics, TONS of content, steep learning curve but very hectic, fast and satisfying gameplay when you get the hang of it just like in Wipeout.

Circuit_Strike.One
CS.ONE-iPhone.gif

Artistically probably one of the coolest games in the app store. Not for everyone, but this is some crazy shit, love it. Plays a bit like geometry wars with a Rez/'hacking' twist on acid. Steep learning curve, don't expect an immediate pick-up-and-play experience. But it rocks once you get the hang of the controls and physics.

Espgaluda
mzl.vddbfpht.320x480-75.jpg

Don't think this one needs any introducing :D.

Need For Speed: Shift
mzl.yofyylkv.320x480-75.jpg

Not usually a fan of these types of games but damn, this game is so much like a great polished full-featured console game in every area (even graphics), that it really hooked me.

Quickly making it to the list:
Archetype
mzl.ofgcwyiy.320x480-75.jpg

Haven't played it much yet but this feels like it's probably the best multiplayer fps experience on the iPhone. I think I prefer it over NOVA's. Plus, it has some style, instead of just 'cloning' Halo.

Damn, I should add Twin Blades to this, it got totally awesome after the update:
Twin Blades
mzl.ejjsqnxd.320x480-75.jpg

I didn't like this game that much at first (save for the wonderful art) but it rocks now with the update. Check the trailer of the update here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ9pYB8J9Nc

Well, I'm not really that upset about being up against Chaos Rings. Since the only other alternatives are against Doodle Jump or Angry Birds, Chaos Rings sounds like a pushover :)

I know we've sold many more copies than those guys, and it is a UK site which should hopefully have many more Fruit Ninja players (Fruit Ninja did very well in the UK). We're just really hoping to get to the finals, so if you have Fruit Ninja and love it please vote for us!

Keep in mind you're not just voting for us, as we're teamed up with Flight Control and Real Racing, so if you love those games too your vote goes to support everyone!

I think it is a common misconception that the "replay" shots lose you time. The timer actually slows down, so you don't lose any time at all.

That being said, some don't like it anyway, so the update will allow for skipping any given slowmo shot or turning them off entirely.

And just curious, is Field Goal pretty much done with or could that get some updates in the future?

Right now we are concentrating on Flick Kick Football because that is having runaway success. Certainly Field Goal will be getting an iOS4 update and we'll likely move towards a universal iPhone/iPhone 4/iPad app so each platform will have optimal graphics.

How far beyond that we go I'm not sure (I'm not involved in the day to day discussions and planning). We are trying to restructure the PikPok team a bit so we have a dedicated subteam just working on updating and adding to the sports titles within the portfolio, so Field Goal will likely get some attention over time.

Jos just put up some screens for the new Flick Kick Football mode too http://www.pikpokgames.com/news/bullseye/

I'm waiting for my train and I stick the Shatter soundtrack on - why oh why is there not 1) Shatter for iPhone in some form and 2) Goddamn Audiosurf for iPhone?

Is there still some facet of the music library Audiosurf can't talk to that's stopping this?

Edit:

Also, as I was playing Fruit Ninja with the Shatter OST on, it got me to thinking about an Audiosurf style dynamic Fruit Ninja game - helped that the OST was matching up nearly perfectly with my slashes.

Yes. All of it. If you play a game like Infinity Gene that supposedly interacts with the audio, you'll find that it doesn't at all.

Why Apple doesn't allow software to allow it, I don't know... it's practically built for that shit. iOS4 might be different, though.

just got Chaos Rings

I can't believe how playable this thing is on the iphone. Anyone who says the iphone can't play traditional games should give this a chance. Great control method and fun battle system so far.

The whole studio is pretty busy at the moment. It is on the list, but we just don't have the bandwidth to do it right now, even taking into account we have been growing like crazy.

Alright you fuckers, with everyone and their mom talking about it in this thread and the iPhone 4 OT, and it hitting a million downloads and getting universal praise, I finally, finally caved and bought Fruit Ninja.

I think it's totally fucking awesome so far, but my character is only a level 4 grunt exploring the wilderness around Matras, the first village. I bought all of the expansions but don't have access to them from this early in the game.

I'm proud of you!

How are you finding it? We will be updating to enhance the graphics with the retina display very soon, so don't fret if it looks a little off.

We need the iPhone 4 to launch in Australia.

Quantity != Quality.

I'd easily rate Fruit Ninja over Doodle Jump or Angry Birds but it doesn't seem fair to put any of them against a game as complete as Chaos Rings.
