The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

Like his previous creation, Katamari Damacy, Keita Takahashi's Noby Noby Boy is bound for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The developer showed a working demo of the game today.

The version we saw appeared to be touchscreen controlled, apparently from a top-down perspective and, frankly, not very clear, as the speaker showed the iPhone game via his laptop's built-in camera. Takahashi had earlier lamented in his talk that to fully connect the solar system in Noby Noby Boy, at the current rate, would take, well, it would take centuries.

"On average, the Girl is growing 40 million meters a day on average. If we go at this rate, in order to connect the entire solar system, it will take 820 years," Takahashi explained. "This is a problem. I'm going to be dead by then."

Takahashi hinted that he would like to add the growth of both the PlayStation 3 version of the game and the iPhone version, but it was unclear if this was possible. Takahashi did not provide specifics on a release date, saying it had only been in development for a week or so, but said it could potentially be free.

Hope more devs incorporate this. One of my pet peeves is the lack of online multiplayer games on a device that is almost solely online based distribution wise. Although mentioning the online for GTA 4 as the proving ground isn't exactly awe inspiring.

We met yesterday with GameSpy, the online multiplayer infrastructure providers, to discuss real-time multiplayer's future on the iPhone. The short answer is that it's looking bright.
GameSpy is one of the biggest players in the multiplayer gaming space; its servers and technology power all of Nintendo's multiplayer games on the Wii and DS, and several marquee franchises like GTA4 also rely on GameSpy to deliver smooth online multiplayer.
We learned that GameSpy is in the process of bringing that exact same technology to iPhone gaming. Select iPhone games will soon be running off of the same servers that run GTA4's multiplayer crime sprees. The company's taking all comers, from huge triple-A games to unknown indie titles. In order to make that feasible, GameSpy's offering two licensing plans: big publishers can pay a one-time per-game fee for multiplayer, while smaller outfits can give up a revenue share.
So what's this stuff do, anyway? In addition to standard stuff like leaderboards, buddy lists, and profiles, GameSpy's bringing over some much-needed features like matchmaking, win streaks, and cross-platform messaging from the console gaming world. One cool ability built into the toolkit is the ability to randomize your opponent by shaking your iPhone.
And the real-time multiplayer itself seemed to work well. We played a simple tech demo game called Tap Race to test it out, losing horribly to GameSpy's demonstrator in the process. The two phones kept in sync seamlessly over 3G, although not all games are guaranteed to work as well--latency depends on how complicated the game is, among other factors.
The first GameSpy-enabled games should be hitting the App Store in the next few weeks. We're excited to see if more developers start to add real-time multiplayer to their games going forward.

Has anyone tried Radio Flare? I really shouldn't need confirmation on the quality of a $0.99 game but it'd be nice.

Some people quite like it but the major complaint is that it is short. That is probably more a factor though when it was at a higher price rather than being at 99 cents.

Sold. You really are the man.

I'm pissed.

I bought MGS and Mega Man II. Haven't tried MGS yet, but FUCK this version of Mega Man II. Do not buy it if you've got big thumbs.

Seriously, I can't hold in right and press the shoot button without accidentally changing direction or jumping. Also, the physics are way off... It's blasphemous. I mean, I understand what Capcom was trying to do, but this is not the way to do it.

Damn it.

i was just about to buy it and read the reviews. thats my biggest prob with traditional games on the phones, the controls suck

EDIT: Is there a r-type/gradius type game for the iphone that's actually good?

Got a pre-release review copy of Azkend from MythPeople/10tons.

Can't say much yet other than it's a really polished puzzler with a great mechanic. Keep an eye out next week.

I passed on it but I'm glad to see its getting good sales (#8 currently in the app store) and seems to well reviewed especially on the app store. I'll buy Doom though when that comes.

For those that don't know ishoot got a pretty big update recently. If it only had online internet play it would be pretty much perfect imo.

Online support: Up to four iPhones / iPod Touches on the same WiFi network can now play iShoot together.

Music: iShoot now features professionally-composed background music.

Rule Editor: Edit the game’s rules, such as how much health the tanks have, how much money you receive per round, and which landscapes are enabled.

Weapon Editor: Part of the Rule Editor, the Weapon Editor allows you to create, edit, and delete weapons. You can simply remove weapons you don’t like, tweak the damage and price of existing weapons, and create brand new weapons from scratch. How about a cluster bomb of Tactical Nukes, or a rapid-fire U238 Penetrator machine gun?

iShoot Remixed: A brand new ruleset with many new weapons, designed to show off the power of the Rule Editor and give you a sense of what is possible now.

“Random” Weapons: A new basic type of weapon for use in the Weapon Editor, “Random” selects one of a number of different weapons when fired. Random weapons are featured heavily in the iShoot Remixed ruleset, giving rise to weapons such as the Jackpot, which might just be a dud… or it might pack the same punch as a World Annihilator. A tamer application of Random is the Disco Bomb, which creates many different colored explosions. Mayhem has never before been so pretty!

Skylance: The basic weapon type used to create the “Great Wall” you all know and loathe :-). Turn off the “Create Dirt” option, and you get a vertical bar of energy which slices through the landscape and leaves tanks at the bottom of a giant hole.

In other update news Crystal Defenders is getting an update where you can now play from landscape mode which was definitely sorely needed for that game.

And I'll also give Stitch'em words a plug since it is getting a nice update soon. Stitch'em is a relatively simple casual word puzzle game where you create words by combining letters with pictures. So the picture of a star combined with the letter E become Stare. A lot of content and a good deal for 99 cents.

Praise the lord. I absolutely suck at it, but I can't stop playing it, bad controls and all. Hopefully this will help.

On another note: holy crap Flight Control is #1 (in games). Totally deserving.

#2 in America but it is funny how a game will occasionally suddenly catch fire and rise to be a big seller when you couldn't have predicted it. Which is a healthy sign.

Edit: Just noticed you said games and indeed it is #1 in the game section. #2 overall for the entire app store.

Pocket God is still #1? Does anyone else think that app just blows, or am I missing something? I played with it for like... 5 minutes, lost interest, and haven't turned it on again.

Oh, and GAF, when I make my iPhone app, you'll help me push it to #1, right? If so, I'm buying everyone in this thread a steak. :lol

Pocket God like I've said before isn't really a game. It's essentially a cheap electronic toy that receives lots of updates to sort of screw around with.

Man, I broke down and bought Wolfenstein. I said I wasn't going to do it... I had stopped spending so much money on apps... But lo and behold, I've blown about $40 in the last 2 days.

God damn the iPhone.

I have eight pages of purchased apps. I've deleted at least that amount, too.

(To be fair, I get most of my apps for free from publishers, but when they don't send my codes, I have to buy it myself.)

That brings up a question. Does Apple limit the amount of apps or amount of pages (which in turn would limit the amount of apps)? I'm just wondering if you can have as many as you can fit on the memory if you Jailbreak and then use the Categories app.

Apps that default to the wrong landscape are really starting to piss me off.

Home button to the damned right hand side!

On a positive note: Wolfenstein <3 <3 <3

One of my out of town friends was raving about Pocket God so I blind bought it. I'm very thankful it was only $0.99. It's way overrated. But it got me thinking that if someone were to release Populous: The Beginning, I would pay large sums of money.

Also, how are the controls for Wolfenstein?

Control method 3 is spot on for me.

left hand bottom on screed WASD, right hand bottom on screen left/right mouselook, upper right hand fire button. Doors/secrets open by walking into them.

I'm 90% sure that if you have the Categories app installed then you can fit a seemlingly endless number of apps on there. I base this off of the fact that at one point, I had every page filled but still had a number of apps that I took off my springboard (using BossPrefs). Same general idea.

Do you guys have a favorite Minesweeper ap? Minesweeper Gold by Gizmolabs looks like a good one, but I thought I'd check here first.

Mines in Space:Minesweeper looks pretty attractive and offers variation games although MineSweeper Gold looks pretty faithful to me so that may be a good choice indeed.

Just got a chance to try out Wolfenstein 3D. It's phenomenal. Totally worth the money (if you like Wolf3D, that is.)

It remains true to the original and has great controls. Definitely worth it.

There is a thread here.

http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=8082

I tried to buy it funny enough after I posted that link and couldn't find it when I searched via the phone so decided to wait until this evening to pick it up.

EDIT: Found it. Only two missions in but pretty good so far. The accelerometer controls for flying work pretty well. I kind of thought they would awhile back after trying the lite version of Pharos 4. Much better than the virtual controller.

Feels like an actual game "game" if you know what I mean which is nice to see.

Gotta head out for dinner though so I can't give any more impressions until later tonight.

Home button on right side makes it so your hand blocks the speaker though. But yeah, the apps that let you hold it either way are nice.

Flight Control has been the top selling App on he UK store for the last couple of days.

Yeah, it's only 59p, but damn, this game is awesome. Word of mouth FTW.

Weird. When I play that way I kinda cup my hand a bit and it intensifies the sound.

There's a 9 page limit within the Springboard.

Iphone is best with the home button the left, Touch is better with the home button on the right as both have different locations for the earphone plug, stupid I know.

As far as Galaxy on Fire I haven't reached the mission yet but some people are saying Mission 9 is impossible to beat. May need to be fixed in an update. Unfortunate because it's a good game from what I've played so far so you may want to hold off on a purchase until this issue is resolved.

Also I broke down and bought fucking Wolfenstein 3-D because of all of the good reviews you fuckers. It is really good though. Slower than the normal Wolfenstein you may have played but the speed perfectly suits the iphone. Control layout #3 with a high sensitivity is a great option and how I play although there are some interesting controls options related to tilt control also which I played around with a little. I wish my fat thumbs were smaller. ;)

Doom is really gonna rock on this thing.

This era of the fps game is really nearly perfectly suited for the iphone. I'm not really sure how games like Quake will work where you divorce the aim from the movement though. You will certainly have to slow them down but I still don't quite understand how you combine movement with shooting. You can emulate dual ananlog controls like a lot of games do like iDracula but how do you fire? Or jump for that matter? Oh well. Those are questions for later.

I can say that Wolfenstein works really well and the map option goes a long way towards making it a better experience than I had even on the PC. I'm sure there is probably a map mod for the PC but I never experienced it so having it for the first time in this version goes a long way towards breaking up the visual maze effect that can occur when play the game.

Wolf3d is the first game I've bought for my iPhone in quite some time. Sure, the controls aren't near as good as on the computer, but it's serviceable enough. I'm eagerly awaiting Doom and Heretic.

Wow - that looks like Wing Commander! Now where can I find me some money....

As for mission 9 being "impossible", the same person says the previous missions were too hard as well, while this is a game that's been on other systems, so I'd take that with a grain of salt. It looks like you can buy weapons and stuff and take optional missions to earn more money, maybe the reviewer just didn't do any of that? The Wing Commander games could get damn hard too...

Dreamwriter said:

For what its worth a couple people have now gotten past that mission 9 so it isn't impossible. Just seemingly very difficult. I'll reach it tomorrow and let people know.
