7 cities is very fun but I'm new to the tower defense genre and I see quite quickly I suck at it. :lol

I've always struggled a bit with RTS games because I tend to turtle so I like this because I can play more aggressively but I need to develop some better strategies because I'm definitely not good.
Don't spread your towers all throughout the map. Pick one of the edges of the river where the land juts out and make tons of canon towers there so they can fire as the enemies arrive and also while they leave. Use the arrow towers to get more range and the tornado tower to slow the fast enemies.

When you're actually playing the game and there's sound, you can use the phone's volume rocker to turn it down. If you try to turn it down before the game loads, or in a main menu sometimes, it'll just turn down the ringer.

Unless of course you have an iPod Touch. In that case, I have no idea.

(Ipod touch) It turns out that the new volume limit feature is a global setting, not just applicable to iPod music playback Go to Settings » Music » Volume Limit from the home screen, and set it to an agreeable level. This will automatically lower the volume of those pesky games.

Honesty, up until today, I didn't use the iPod touch for anything but music and podcasts.

The iPod touch is the first electronic device I've used in over 20 years where I've actually needed to read the manual to know how to do basic things.

I bought it 8 months ago and I just learned how to turn it off today. Hold the power button for 15 seconds, and then slide the red slider to turn it off. I know I'm not the only one. People in one of the ipod threads thought that you couldn't turn it off. It wouldn't surprise me if apple did that to keep people buying ipods when the battery dies.
:lol :lol

I'm thinking about buying an iPod Touch purely as a gaming device. 8 or 16GB is laughable as an MP3 player so I'll keep my Zune for that. And seeing as you can't get iPhones on Pay as you Go, I'll keep my Windows Mobile Smart Phone.

So is this a stupid idea? And also, are all iPhone games playable on iPod Touch. I don't wanna miss out.

I suggest waiting. If you're not going to use it for music or video (or as an internet connected mini computer).

There a lot of nice timewaster games for a buck or so, but only a couple real standouts that would hold their own on other consoles. They have been mentioned in this thread (Rolando, Fieldrunners, simcity, etc)

Unless you need to play those games right now, you could wait a year till capacities go up (and prices down) and then you could perhaps use one for more than just gaming. plus, many more (worthwhile) games will be around then.

for question 2, all games work with ipod touch. but there are a few that use a mic. you would need to get a headset with mic to play them on the Touch. but, really, it's no big deal. none of the good games make use of that now.

Ah right, so its not ready to be a proper gaming system yet, just some cool games as an extra. Ok, I've got a PDA Smartphone for web browsing, and SCUMMVM, so I'll be ok.

Thanks

I love iphone gaming but I couldn't recommend it as a gaming device unless you just have gobs of cash lying around that you don't mind wasting. I mean some of the games are quite fun but it's still more in the stage where it's an added benefit to a device I already needed.

Yeah, there really aren't enough complete and polished games like Rolando or SimCity to buy it purely for gaming. They are coming though!

There is no valid reason to turn it off, except rebooting. It's a lithium battery, which work well when topped off. Turning the iPod Touch off for long periods of time would have no appreciable effect on battery life. As for needing the manual to do basic things, I'm not sure admitting that is a good idea.

Yeah, if you're not going to use it for anything but gaming, Stoney is right. It's a true swiss army device, and the benefit is replacing items in your pocket, not adding them.

SimCity is fun (though zooming is a hassle.)

BTW I'm digging 1112, love the music, and it's a great adventure game. I'll certainly pick up the next ones.

Awesome. Now we just need a Parish hosted iPhone/Touch podcast. :D
No promises, but once we get all our expanded content blogs launched and running on their own steam I do intend to look into the possibility of mini-podcasts for some of them. With Andrew's blessing, of course.

/High five

I have a feeling there will be no shortage of games to talk about.

By the way, I'm really enjoying the blog so far. I've subscribed to it on Google Reader. Keep up the awesomeness.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but in Simcity if you shake the phone/touch a cheat box will pop up. Then if you type "I am weak" (without the quotes) and hit the check mark everything will be free just like past PC SimCity's.

that's awesome :lol

For fans of Puzzle Bobble/Bust a Move, you should give this a try.

Alien Blob (Lite)

It's a pretty straight up Puzzle Bobble clone... or is it? You play it on an orbital path, and there are a bunch of different powerups. There are also different objectives per level, such as using the shield item to defend innocent creatures from the aliens. This game is actually pretty polished, even has story sequences.

I can also attest to Katamari being vastly improved after the update. Still not silky smooth, but I just blew through levels with lots of time left. Before it was a struggle, so it definitely is playable and enjoyable now.

Thanks. I DL'd it and will give it a shot.

same here. I decided to pick this up after hearing about the update. finished the 5 story levels. the only real slowdown was on the last one, where you're picking up tons of buildings.

since i never owned katamari for the ps2 or 360, i'm not yet sick of it, so having a bite-sized motion controlled version is great.

Finished all of 7 Cities. Love that game. I need more TD, though.

I'm about to download the new Katamari update. Pretty pumped about that, considering I thought the initial version was alright.

Anything new I should be getting?

s there some kind of universal way to adjust the volume on games? I noticed the sound was loud on Katamari and there were no volume controls. Does it just use you volume from when you listen to music?

Game music volume is based on the iPod music volume. So on an iPod Touch, double-tap the home button to bring up the play controls, and you can adjust the volume there. And if a game does have internal volume controls, they are offset from that base volume.

Oh, and as of OS 2.2, many games follow the mute switch.

Rolando. ;)

Ugh I want games like Rolando and Galcon, but I dont have a CC. Any options for me?

Edit: Got a US account so I can use Paypal, but that requires an american bank account as well.. :(

The update for i Love Katamari is really, really great, smooths out the experience ten-fold. Everything about it feels much faster and smoother, mm mm mmmmmm. I didn't really have a problem with it before. The slow down parts during the "level up" sequence were annoying, but not game breaking. It helped sometimes, actually.

Still pondering SimCity. And reading people mentioning Seven Cities I thought that someone had released the old classic Seven Cities of GOld for the iPhone. I immediately checked the app store just in case. I was disappointed. :lol

i feel almost embarassed to ask but i have no idea what Tower Defense games are. The pics of Seven Cities look intriguing but what are the basic gameplay mechanics of these games?

THEY'RE COMING!
I HOPE MY TOWERS WILL KILL THEM ALL!
... phew killed em. time to build more/upgrade my towers for the next, stronger wave.

THEY'RE COMING!
I HOPE MY TOWERS WILL KILL THEM ALL!
etc.

Hope that helped.

so its kind of like a RTS game but you spend all your time and resources on building defense towers?

They are an off shoot of RTS games.

Basically you build defense towers to attacks invaders before they can reach a designated area. But it's all automated like an RTS where you only control the construction and upgrade of the towers.

The attackers come in waves and the more you kill the more money you earn to buy more towers and upgrade them.

The waves become increasingly stronger however. So the balance becomes where you place the towers, what mix of different towers you buy, and which ones you upgrade. Like I said like a very streamlined version of an RTS.

In full confession I stink at them and I'm also new to the genre but I'm enjoying them while trying to learn how to properly play.

In short, you need to set up towers to stop armies from crossing through the screen..

so you'd see on the screens that there are ships in the water, and towers on the shore.. the ships are the AI trying to get to the other side of the river, the player builds the towers (which have different traits) in order to stop them from arriving at their destination

EDIT: wow.. that teaches me not to leave a thread open and forget to refresh before reading it 20 mins later

i love the gameplay description on the website

You find nice beautiful woman walking around the streets of Tokyo. At first, draw her attention by tapping her shoulder from the back, and then choose the most appropriate word from the list. If it is the right word enough for her to turn around, your mission is clear.

Once you cleared you mission, you can enjoy two special features;
1 She says to you the nicest words which cures your heart and body.
2 You can stare at her all day long, while pinching in and out her body.
