The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

Not open for further replies.
Quite a few games coming from well known companies or movies/etc seem to be rushed, but there is still a good handful of great games from known devs to balance it out.

I didn't buy watchman for 3 reasons, firstly I have no working wifi untill summer, second I disliked how the game looked in screenshots, and thurd I hardly know anything about the movie :lol

*evening edit* I just bumped into Attack From The Dead on the app store in the top 100, looks like a survival game with the same rendered style of iDracula, but there is only one youtube video right now which doesn't cover much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKfOLO5dYKk

AAARUGH I think I lost all my saves and maybe more, when I cleaned up my pc the other day I must have somehow removed the downloaded app's or related data from my hdd, iTunes first alerted me when I had no app's on my computer on booting it up so it asked if I wanted to sync my ipod, I found this odd but it seemed to be my only option and all was fine after that.

Now syncing up tonight it's saying my ipod is from a different user, and it's required me to clear my ipod and restore everything, I have a strong feeling i've lost my save for puzzle quest due to this.

I just don't remember touching my iTunes folder when doing a pc clean up, rather odd all this.

*edit* Phew, all safe! that was my first problem i've had with my device since I brought it.

Link? You just go into your account and click 'change country'. Obviously, you need an address, and possibly a payment method for that location...

I was just wondering if there were, say, a limited number of changes, or a default period that won't let you switch back etc. Just wondering what the advantages/disadvantages to creating a second acount vs. just changing countries were.

For example, having apps and/or songs purchased from different stores under the same account. I expect they would work like having multiple accounts, but just wanted to be sure.
Oh, I get it. Too much hassle to go through though, I'll stick with having an account for each store, I was able to create a US account without a US payment method by trying to download a free app, just had to enter a random US address and no payment method at all.

Having some issues ATM though, I don't seem to be able to re-sync apps from my first account even if I sign in on iTunes. It says that I'm not authorized for them on this computer :( However I can re-download them directly through the iPod. Fuck. Anybody knows of a workaround for this?

edit-heh, it was simpler than I thought, forget it. Store > Authorize computer. Duh.

Stop bringing up oregon trail. >:( It makes the wait harder knowing it's still not out.
So is it worth getting the watchmen app now while its a dollar in hopes of it getting improved on?

Personally I never thought the game would be anything but a trainwreck. Even for a buck I wouldn't budge. Don't reward sloppy and bad games.

Baseball Superstars is on sale this weekend in honor of the World Baseball Games Open. Down from $5 to $2.

I had been eyeing it for a while hoping for a price drop, and $2 felt like the right time to splurge. I've been playing it all morning - really good/fun/quick arcade baseball. There's a create-a-player mode with some basic sports RPG elements (training, item purchasing, etc) - it plays like a very basic Road To The Show mode. There's also quick play, a regular season mode, a home run derby, and a mission mode with what looks like 40 missions.

Definitely recommended, especially for $2.

With tower defense games making up the bulk of the strategy games on the iphone, the more traditional strategy style games have suffered in lack of quantity on the platform which imo leaves a perfect hole for a smart developers to exploit. The iphone is a perfect platform for turn based strategy games so hopefully the new year will see some smart developers taking advantage of this situation.

Galcon. A perfect example of a simple addictive strategy battle game than can be played in under 5 minutes. Online multiplayer included. Great game. Lite version is available.

Westward. Self described by the developers as a pioneer themed real time strategy game, Westward is a port of a PC title. More slower paced and requiring more micromanagement than most of the other sims, Westward occupies a relatively open and unique space on the plaftform. If you can get past the controls there seems to be an interesting game underneath.

Coming up next. Sports genre

Thanks for the round up Stoney, a lot of games I have never heard of on there.

I've been hard at work recently making my first iphone game. I'm doing everything I can to make sure the game runs at a good speed, as I find choppy iphone games to be a bit disappointing. I'll be sure to share something on neogaf when I have something worth sharing.

I think Edge is the game I've enjoyed most so far.

Got an email from the dev this morning:

Yes, sorry about that! I'm kicking myself for not spotting that one before releasing the game. :(

I sent an update to the AppStore a few days ago so that should go live any day now.

Sean.

Highly recommend picking it up when the update hits. Had lots of fun until I discovered the bug and realized that the game was about to get impossible/broken.

It's in the puzzle game round up list along with the flash demo link but I'll break it out separately just to give it some props because I really only played it recently myself.

Drop7 is a damn good puzzle game.

Yep. He posted essentially the same on his forum a few days back. I meant to post it in response to you but I forgot.

seeing all the titles on the iPhone laid out like this is pretty epic. I laugh in the face of the ignorant who say there are no good games on the thing

Agreed, about as detailed as I'd want a baseball game on the iPhone. Controls take some getting use to though.

This game looks like MLB Power Pros! I will try it out. This looks more complete than the actualy DS MLB Powe Pros.

Anyone tried out Cooking Mama? How does it compare to the DS version?

As much as my pants tighten over the thought of not only a new Archon but a new PORTABLE Archon, I fear how it may control in the battle sequences. :/

Any thoughts on the games "Westward" I didn't see it in the strategy write-up and hear that it's a lot like Virtual villagers, but more in depth.

I may finally drop some change on some apps.

What's the best Black Jack, Texas hold-em, General Casino and General Card games apps. I'll prob end up getting 4, one from each category I just listed. Price isn't an issue, so long as the game is the best one available.

Hey stoney is there any reason to get iGo over iGobang?

Not sure. Honestly I looked over the review and picked igo mainly because it had a slightly better review quality after reading through some of the reviews on both apps and because it has the ability to do a 19 by 19 Grid which is the correct official size.

Might be worth posting the question over at touch arcade as they have some go players over there.

Cool, I guess I'll pick up iGo in the meantime since it was reviewed well.

I'd just like to mention that Galcon is my favourite game on the App store. It beats the rest hands down. I play the online multiplayer whenever I have a spare 5 minutes. There are always rooms and players playing online so don't be afraid to give it a go. Try out the lite version then imagine playing online with others.

21 Pro is the best blackjack game. There is a lite version that is fully featured, but it has ads. I recommend buying the full version to support the dev. The Apple Texas Hold Em game is OK. No idea on general card games. Would be open to suggestions.

I would use Tetsuki if I were you. Not only is it free but you can play online against other people.

Payback (GTA clone) was just updated to v1.1. It added an improved minimap and better viewing angle. I just bought the game and I'm loving it. It's pretty much what you'd expect from a GTA1 clone. If you're a fan of the classic GTA style then be sure to check it out.

Sports games are slowly but surely making their way to the iphone. Developers are dealing with the learning curve as they struggle to find what works and what doesn't work due to the nature of iphone controls. Sports games are some of the most complex games when it comes to control input on traditional consoles, so games that pare down sports to their essentials are probably going to make the most sense on the platform.

Real Soccer 2009. Probably the best take on a traditional console style approach to a sports game on the iphone. Ability to play a full season. Real players. Well done.
