i just bought hero of sparta for 0,79€. the framerate sucks ass, but the rest is pretty good. it's like a god of war clone - even with QTE. I'm really enjoying it so far - even with the bad framerate.

I just went and bought Scrabble, just because.

Anyway, why does my Scrabble:

Look so much better than your Scrabble?:

Is this how the board game looks in the US?

I understand the Euro version has different languages to play in, but lacks FaceBook, and it seems the dictionary option. I can just keep submitting bogus words it seems, until I get one. I guess that's for the better, for the fun of it. In multiplayer can you challenge words, or does it simply not let you place wrong words?[/QUOTE]

So do you think it's good overall?

How are the controls?

So I finished Mass Effect Galaxy and I must say I kinda dug it- gameplay is alittle meh, but as a whole package with story and dialog I thought it was pretty fun, especially if you are a Mass Erect fanboy like I am:D

On a 3GS? I don't think it runs bad. Something must be wrong with my eyes.

They nailed the analog stick, but the action button is annoying because it does so much with one button that you can just leave it held down. I would have prefered two attack buttons to give me more control instead of a button to hit and a button to defend. You get some more abilites as you go though.

Buttons will appear for other required tasks, like jumping. The minor annoyance here is that you can't jump while walking if you are jumping up instead of across, so I wasted a few minutes wondering why the button wasn't recognizing that I was hitting jump while running in that direction.

The game is fun but not super fun. I paid the $5 so maybe that's why, but I had more fun with Terminator and Castle of Magic so far.

Yeah, the price issue definitely brings in additional factors that determine personal enjoyment. For example, I never play Flight Control and don't personally enjoy it; but don't feel bad about buying it since it was only $1. Vanguard Storm cost me $5, so I feel much more bitter about buying it. On one hand its only $5 bucks... but its also 500% more expensive than half the games on my iPhone. I think it can lead to problems where we quickly recommend games partly because of their $1 price; but our entire perception of them changes if they go up to $4 or $5.

Based on the above post, its price (59p come on! a can of coke costs more!) and the game style I just bought Must.Eat.Birds.

It's really fun and I can see it becoming very addictive due to its simplicity and ultra cuteness. It plays really well and is incredibly smooth to boot. iPhone really is a fantastic platform for games like this which are instantly playable and just as engaging as any console title (I know that sounds crazy but back to basics gaming is fucking cool). They are videogames, yay!

Just when I thought I could go a DAY without a purchase!

Good fun so far.

Yeah. Just been through it a few games, and it seems solid enough. For US$5, it's not too shabby (NZ$6.49).

At first, I thought it was a bit of a cheat to have a 'best words' (limited to 4 uses), but it helps you gain a bit, as losing all the time would be no fun. Same with the concept of not being able to put fake words and having them challenged (although this would be stupid against a computer - not sure if this is in multi, as I haven't tried it).

I think a really good thing would be to simply have a dictionary to look up words, but I guess that is accomplished by it you just trying and seeing. Still, a reason IU like to play is to learn new words, and being able to look up a definition on a word I have never seen would be a HUGE plus.

Does the US version give you a definition in the dictionary?

Also, wanted some opinions on which version people thought looked nicer (I've already made my decision, just wanted to know others' opinions).

I wonder what other differences there are between the versions, such as dictionaries used and so forth.

Online multiplayer doesn't interest me that much, nor does multiplayer for that matter, now that I think about it. I love Scrabble, but one of my pet peeves when playing boardgames is that people don't pay attention to the game when we play IRL.

iPhone boardgames are great to take for a spin. I have Yahtzee, Chess (and Chinese Chess), which are kind of fun. I'm no good at most of these games, but I like to play them, so being able to anytime by myself is kinda neat.

Thanks for the impression. Will put it into my favorites list in Pandora and get it somewhere down the line.

Eat.More. Birds
I am TOTALLY loving this game, its super high quality and play so nicely, it could easily be something like a mini game in a AAA "proper" developed video game, its that good!

I am stuck on Cookie Jar at the moment, having to take down 60 birds with only 30 monsters. I can get 59 do I am almost there :)

Love it.

I played the first level a few times because I got a D and then a C so I wanted to improve. I just got around to playing the second level and I'm IN LOVE with this game and will definitely be watching this developer.

A cake is growing in the background and I'm not sure what's happening and then MAXIMUM BAKE! followed by pandemonium. :lol

Jungle Bloxx demo is really fun, just played through it again. Anyone have the full game, how's the level variety?

I'm trying to limit myself to one purchase a week, but it's so tough!!

I believe I'm on the 4th or 5th level. The setups get a lot more interesting and challenging, especially when there is this elaborate set up and you feel proud of yourself that you got the diamond into the goal in 5 steps and you're told that it's possible in 2. It's a lot of fun and challenging, I'd recommend it.

edit: I'm on the second area now. There was a random Bejeweled-alike game for me to obtain a map and now the puzzles include fire blocks that explode surrounding blocks when tapped, so things are staying fresh.

Real Arcade Soccer - on sale for $1

Video

Anyone here have this? Is it good?

I bought it at full price, I think 10 bucks. It is worth it especially for 5, X2 Football is better but its 7 times the price and doesnt have licensed players.

The penalty kick mode is fun for a quick game too.

Make sure to do the tutorial though, there is a bit more to the controls than you might expect.

I've mentioned this game before but since its on sale for 99 cents I thought I would mention it again for fans of word games. Basically it's a Bookwork clone (although it was on the app store way before bookworm).

Really good word game with a lot of options and while it doesn't have the flash or presentation of Bookworm it's a darn good game in its own right. This app has come along away from when I originally bought it way back when so I always try to encourage and promote that sort of behavior.

Hmm.

I bought this looking for a game like that word game I spent ages on the plane (turned out it was bookworm, but I didn't know much about it at the time).

This is competent, and the controls work fine, but I just don't feel the need to get a high score. Basically, I don't feel like I am actually controlling my own destiny in that game - like the score is arbitrary ad beyond my capacity to control. It feels empty to me.

Here's a screen from when I had it:

Got Must.Eat.Birds but my first two attempts to play the first mission result in crashing to home screen. Let's see if the third time is the charm...

Edit: Works! Yay.

Try rebooting (if you can *sob*).

It crashes a ton for me too unless I reboot the phone right before playing it.

Amusingly, one time it started loading the first level...then paused and ended up somehow loading my alldinners.com app.

It hasn't crashed for me once and I've been played it a few times today. What did crash was Star Defense this morning, it crashed and then anything I tried to open after that wouldn't open. Wasn't too annoying since the 3GS boots up pretty quick.

Do you guys know if Apple is going to release an iTouch that has 3GS specs later this year? If so, around what time do you guys expect it?

Apple will most likely release a updated iPod Touch that exceeds the power of the 3GS by September - the month they update their iPod line every year. Rumor has it the next Touch will have camera in it too.

Mass Effect for the iPhone impressions from a Mass Effect fanboy: shit sucks.

The tilt combat gameplay is balls.

The cut sequences are total shit, poor writing and boring conversations.

You play a rambo sociopath.

Load screens every 20 seconds (in some cases I'm not joking)

The only good thing is the sound and art during the cutscenes. Everything else is balls.

Still can't hate a game too much when its 5 bucks, but it caught me in a bad mood.

I just discovered that Sean O'Conner released a Lite-version of Slay in may:

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=315102561&mt=8

324342.jpg

Now, Slay has easily been my most played game on the format this year. A great strategy game, easy to understand with a perfectly balanced rule set. The harder settings can be really brutal but still fun to play (there's 384 maps in total).

It's probably not for everyone, it's not super-deep, just a version av Risk mixed with Rock, Paper, Scissor rules and hexagons.

But it also has some great mechanics, the way you need to attain (and hold) hexagons to be able to support your troops, the different ways to attack and expand, etc.

It's an old Windows-game (and for other formats as well), and it can be bought for those here:

http://www.windowsgames.co.uk/slay.html

I haven't tried the Lite-version, so I don't know what it shows. But I want more people discovering this game.

Slay is bringing hexyback.

There's a game called "Aquatica - The Underwater Adventure" which seems to be getting a bit of controversy for ripping off FlOw. Jenova Chen of thatgamecompany accused the guy of ripping him off without crediting, but the Aquatica developer claims it's a fan remake developed from the ground up and posted the source code on his website to prove it.

Whatever the case, the game is free so it may be worth a look for fans of FlOw.

TORONTO DEVS KETARA RELEASE UNAUTHORIZED FLOW CLONE TO IPHONE - Offworld

The creator of Flow, Jenova Chen's response to Aquatica:
I thought the creation of Aquatica is a very flattering thing because they mimic the game I created in the university and somewhat realized my dream for a flOw game on the iPhone. It could be a very sweet thing if they did this as a fan ware and put it out for free. But the fact they didn't mention flOw at all and call it a 'new, unique game completely in a class of its own' is disappointing.

Ketara's response to the controversy:
What's wrong with adapting a general idea of one game to the iPhone? No one had done this before, and we wanted to play it with tilt controls. In general, most games within each class are practically the same, just different graphics.

Does this seem like "adapting a general idea" to anyone?

Now it seems Ketara has changed their tone, and has added a little paragraph to their app page in response to the controversy:
Please note: Aquatica is an iPhone from-the-ground-up re-make (FAN VERSION) of the famous flOw game created by Jenova Chen of the ThatGameCompany fame. We deeply apologize for not properly crediting him earlier. Our mistakes were caused by naivety, not malice.

This is very disappointing... I just hope it stays free.

It's actually a pretty decent implementation. Nice controls. Seems to slow down a lot for me though. Maybe I need a reboot - haven't done that in a while.
