I will wait for Doom to drop to 2.99 in two weeks.

I'm waiting for a price drop also. It seems like every game on the App Store drops in price just shortly after release (even from the big developers), so unless it's cheap at launch I'll just wait a month or so. I have seen some recent games drop in price in just a few days of release (Mass Effect from $5 to 2.99 within four days) which is really lame IMO.

The App Store is insanely competitive, and price erosion is both good and bad. I wonder how many quality games will make money.

Really, it's not as awesome as I wish it was. Sometimes you just get the right combination of letters and the prefixes and suffixes start flying.

How is it on the iPhone? I got a free copy of the XBL version and thought it was ok, but definitely not something I would have dropped $10 on. $3 isn't that bad for it, though.
it's pretty addicting actually and I don't usually like these kind of games. definitely worth 2 bucks.

plus, the more people who support this game, the more of a chance we have of atlus bringing some of their bigger franchises to the iPhone (TRAUMA CENTER!!)

Hey look you have my name!

I mean... how'd you get a screenshot of my scores?!

I ordered a 3GS to replace my Touch so I just bought Wordfu, Knights Onrush, Hero of Sparta, Doodle Jump and Must.Eat.Birds all for only $1 each!! And FourTrack recorder and the Peterson Strobe tuner were both about $13, gettin ready for when it arrives. I want Peggle and Zenonia but I'll have to wait until they go on sale.

I tried DrawRace. Really addicting. The controls work like a charm. You need to draw slowly in the turn if you want to get good times. It's very satisfying to see how you can progressively lower the lap times and gain more and more positions in the online rankings.
Rating: Insta Drug

Bought Star Defense after I saw it on Co-op although I wanted to stay away from tower defense games. I have to say though it's really good. I also love the Plus thin Ngmoco is doing. They really knwo how to take advantage of the platform.

Doom Resurrection looks like it would be right up my alley.... for half the price. It's 7,99 Euro here and the 5 Euro I payed for Star Defense are pretty much the most I will pay fo an iPhone game. Drop the price id and I will buy it.

Peronthious said:
Geodefense definitely, but Star Defense is pretty good also.

Listen to this man. I can't stress enough how awesome GeoDefense is. Just an incredible game, excellent visuals and sound, challenging play. I put in over 15 hours; an unbelievable value for only $4.

So I finally bought Peggles and holy crap this game is addictive Popcap outdone them selves again, I bought it for .99 but it's worth 4.99 easily.

Trauma Center = want also persona :D , I bought Dr. Awesome a while ago and overall it's entertaining but not that good

iSR is awesome, the controls are tight and any mistake feels like your own fault and not the game. Please please please add in some heavy techno music and I will probably trip out at high speeds :lol

Gold Rush is also now on my buy list, the trial hooked me in.

Now that Rolando is staying I will leave it, it "might" get a tiny price drop after a while when 2 is out.

Drawrace is also great fun, the way the car physics work mean you don't have to be 100% percise with your drawing as long as you understand what a racing line is and where to slow down the car. Buy it.

*edit* I also started playing warpack grunts at last and it's the first app I own which really wants me to buy a iphone compatible stylus, the game runs great but always having my hand/finger in the way does not help too much.

More excellent interview material from Carmack and Toucharcade.

Also Slide to Play had a slight site redesign. People really should support far and away the best two iphone gaming sites on the net so please always give them your click support.

Interview Transcript
Eli / TouchArcade: What kind of future plans do you guys have for the Doom series? Tom showed us a really cool bluetooth Doom Resurrection coop mode at WWDC, are you going to be doing anything like that in the future with downloadable content (DLC) or how is that all going to work?

Tom Mustaine: Yeah, we've got a early functional demo that does cooperative play through peer to peer bluetooth that you guys got a peek at. The hope is that the game does well enough to support patching that in. We're likely going to finish that up anyway and put it in down the road. We didn't honestly expect 3.0 to launch so quickly.

John Carmack: Haha, that's actually throwing some of my plans with Doom Classic in to little bit of an uproar too. I got it working with WiFi multiplayer right now, but I have no idea about adoption rates right now on 3.0 and if we 3.0 only, do we launch at 2.1? I'm still a little confused what we want to do on that.

I do think the right way to do iPhone titles is to launch solid then add features through the upgrades because the upgrades process is painless. You go out, fix whatever problems you had in there and add some extra sweetener features in that. For the multiplayer, that really is a 3.0 dependent thing. I don't even know how it's going to work yet as far as do you release apps with different versions for 2.0 and 3.0? Do we only release 3.0 when we don't want to support 2.0 people anymore? If they try to upgrade from there does it fail? I don't even have the answers to all these things yet, we're still kind of figuring this all out. I do hope the app is successful enough to do in-app downloadable content as another 3.0 feature so we can have additional levels going in there as well as the multiplayer side of things.

Tom: That applies to Doom Resurrection, Doom Classic, and everything else.

John: Yeah, and Doom Classic again I just got the multiplayer working on Friday and it's closing in on me finishing everything I want for the initial release of that. It may have changed with the 3.0 schedule, but my initial thought was Doom Classic goes out, it has WiFi multiplayer on the initial launch then we have a later version that has 3.0 support that has Bluetooth and downloadable content so people can get Doom 2, Ultimate Doom, Final Doom, Master Levels, all those things on there.

Then a later release where we'll consider competitive internet multiplayer on WiFi. That's kind of a long-term plan on there but I've also briefly talked with Tom about the possibility of having Escalation take the free-roaming Doom and building a much better new game from there without having to necessarily stay true to original in terms of breaking people's nostalgia factor which I'm pretty excited about. Doom Classic really is cool, it is a lot of fun to play and not only do I think it will be very successful, but games based on that generation of technology and doing new things with them on the iPhone.

Eli: If Doom Classic does well, do you see yourself making a Quake Classic as well?

John: Absolutely. I'm planning on rolling through Quake, Quake 2, and with a little bit of improvement in some of the system software from Apple (They've got a few things that are hamstringing us with touch processing and the overhead of not being able to do static data specifications on GL) I think we can manage all the way up to Quake Arena where we probably wind up taking all the Quake Live updated stuff in to there.

In any case, the 3GS is a no brainer on there, there's no worries at all on doing that at a great level of performance on there. In additional to those we've got plans to do plans to do a Rage themed from-scratch iPhone title, and our traditional mobile titles we're bringing over like Wolfenstein RPG that Firemint did kind of an iPhone up-port for that.

Wolfenstein RPG for iPhone

EA is kind of sitting on right now until they feel Wolfenstein 3D Classic has fallen off their radar. They were really kind of shocked, taken aback, and worried when I did the Wolfenstein 3D Classic stuff because they thought that people would be confused and not getting the right products and everything.

We're worried a little bit about the same thing with Doom Resurrection and Doom Classic, but it may not be an issue. The id mobile team is also internally working on the Doom 2 RPG for Java phones which will also be brought over to the iPhone as well. If people turn out to like those kind of games we also have some really great early stuff with the Orcs and Elves titles that were very successful on traditional phones that we'd like to bring over to the iPhone. I'd like to have an iPhone release every 2-3 months for the next year.

Arn / TouchArcade: Going back to a point you mentioned, you mentioned maybe getting Escalation Studios going back to work on the original Doom stuff. Would that be another crafted experience like Doom Resurrection?

John: That's based more on a couple offhand comments between us. One of the comments that I had made as I was doing Doom Classic is I have to walk a fine line I've got all these things that I'd like to do to make the game better. As I made a few changes in Wolfenstein 3D you lose the nostalgia value if you change things up too much, or at least people complain about it. I've got pages of notes of things I could do to make the game better but some of those would end up ticking off different people.

So I like the idea that Doom Classic stays faithful to the original with OpenGL rendered graphics with filtering and a good framerate as well as slightly better sound quality and a number of these things… but it's still essentially the same game with a brand new finely crafted control system on it.

What would be cool is then go ahead and take all the things I'd like to do with it. (And my internal name for this is Doom++.) Where you take all of the art assets and modernize the gameplay in some of the ways we've learned to make better games since then. Make brand new levels, carry a story through it, and do some modern things. We haven't committed to any of this, but Tom would be the perfect guy to run through all this stuff since he has experience all the way back to the original Doom levels.

Tom: We talked about it briefly, and you can do some pretty amazing stuff on this platform with that tech. As well as obviously taking all the principles of all the multiplayer shooters that have come out since Doom invented it back in the day and apply it to the multiplayer and apply a lot of it to the single player. You can build a real interesting experience with this kind of engine and build it relatively quickly too. From the technology standpoint from Doom Resurrection, we'll be moving that forward down the line as well.

Eli: So Wolfeinstein RPG is ready to roll and EA is just sitting on it?

John: It's in the can, evidently there was some glitch where people were able to get it. It's based on the Java game that the id mobile team did, and Firemint did a really good job on making it up to iPhone quality levels. We provided a bunch more up-res'd art and sound assets but they did some good work on trying out different user interfaces to figure out how to take something that was designed for a clamshell phone and playing it on the iPhone.

That's got a different take on things where it's much more story progression driven and not real time twitch action which should certainly appeal to a chunk of the iPhone market that's not really hardcore action gamers. EA's worry was we'd have to convince people to buy two Wolfenstein titles because Wolfenstein 3D Classic went out and it did well, but EA is concerned of people confusing the titles. I have no idea when they plan on releasing it. I'm disappointed that it's not out by now. I never liked having completed games that people will have a lot of fun with sitting in the can.

Arn: It sounds like there is a lot coming from id, that's great.

John: I'm very excited about the platform. We've had fun with the traditional mobile stuff and I felt we did some really great games on the mobile platform that took advantage of what we can do there but I've had a lot more fun on the iPhone than on the Java stuff.

You’ve roared and we’ve listened. Rolando will stay put on the App Store. Topple is coming back. That’s how we roll.

Some other news: Topple 1 will return to the App Store also. It was originally taken off to put the spotlight on Topple 2, but received much less outcry. That’s some good news to hear as the first one can act as a lite version to the second one, or maybe it will come back with a price? We’ll see.

This is nice to hear.

Ok, iSR is GOOD.
Kudos to the Gaffer who did it, great work!
It just plays amazing and leaves you wanting for more and more... and i'm usually not into time attack stuff.
Bravo!

it really is. i see them at $1.20 and i'm unable to not buy them

edit: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

knights onrush is back to $4. it said till june 30 :(

iSR is fun, and plays really well, but is there anything to do other than drive through the same tunnel forever, faster and faster, before you crash into something and slow down? Some kind of time attack or something?

anyone try mage story? 0.99 and just came out. Can't find any info on TA.
I'd just buy it but i'm getting ready to make a bunch of other purchases.

I love GAF! believe me, I read a lot more than I post. No other place could keep me so cozy and warm.

A ridiculously HUGE thanks to everyone who picked up iSR. We (my programmer and I) really want to make this the racing experience on the platform. We think we're off to a pretty good start too. Please PM me, or post comments here, we're completely open to any and all feedback (no matter how harsh).

Music, as well as Sound FX, are most definitely on the way. As are more racers, more modes, richer environments, etc.

Just an fyi.
You can play your own music through iTunes.

Here's a peak at one of the next ships going in the game too..

Is or bad that I refuse to buy a game unless it on sale for 99 cents? Although I might have to bight down and get Zenbound for full price. The lite version really impressed me.

It's just 'Speed' mode right now.. since it's still the pre-season.
You should get a results screen after your run is over.

Perhaps you selected the practice mode. That goes on forever.

Whether it's bad or not, that's the way the cookie crumbles. Developers don't get to do this whole price rollercoaster thing and not expect savvy consumers to figure it out. I just add every app I'm interested in to PandoraBox and wait for it to notify me that the stuff has dropped.

I mean, look at this:

There is nothing wrong with buying games at whatever price a person chooses to purchase them at. (Although the cheap skates better not be the same ones whining about why X or Y game isn't on the platform because you have a partial answer right there.)

This is going to come off bitchy but its not really aimed at you so don't take it that way. Perhaps a personal pet peeve of mine but I'd like to see less posts like I refuse to buy games until they hit X or Y price or I only buy 99 cent games. We get it. It's a common sentiment. And it adds relatively little to the thread. People post all the sale price links and relatively cheap games in the thread anyway so it's not like anybody is actively trying to hide this material from you.

EDIT: Note I'm not talking about discussion of value of games relative to money or relative to each other or pricing policy. I'm more talking about the sort of I only buy 99 cent games blanket statement relating to games or a specific game that I often see.

Good work man, the new ship looks rad!
Glad you keep on supporting this pretty little gem, really!

A little advice: IMHO some menus are a little too confused and could use some work.
Some indications should be clearer, like i almost couldn't read the grey text that takes you back to main screen when you play in practice mode.

Other than that great great work!

You know what - it was 2AM and I went to bed right after trying the game out, so it might just be what I did. I just tapped the first thing I saw and never went back to menu.

Normally it comes down to then the dev wakes up and logs into apple to change it manually, sometimes an app might run an extra day or two because the seller thinks its worth an extra day of cheap sales for money.

I've seen this thread peppered with the occasional megapost of games in similar genres. Is there a post somewhere that has links to them so I don't have to search thru 150 pgs of stuff? I just got my first iPhone on Sunday and would like to start loading up, but I don't know what's good and I haven't found a great way of searching the app store.

Wait .. Why is Field Runners suddenly a "Dont Buy"?

I heard it was like Tower Defense game of the year and I don't even own a Tower Defense game yet.. but want one!

finally found some info on the TA forums on Mage Story:
http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=17169

it dropped quick to 0.99 and seems to be a poor man's Underworlds. not much info out there. it has potential but there's no info on whether the devs plan on updating it.

Biggest issues seem to be controls, repetitive gameplay and some other gameplay issues (it seems you can teleport back to town but not back to where you were once you're done)

Surprised by Bionic Surfer. I'm not really a fan of on screen buttons, but I really liked the lite version. iSR looks cool, I hope it can become complete soon

Forgot to mention the menus (they were originally done by me, I'm a game designer, not so much a graphic designer :lol ). Anyway, those have already been completely overhauled and look like the official thread banner now -- as seen at TA.

We're working on stuff day and night. We only hope that with 3.0 being out now Apple's submission/update process becomes quicker, more reliable. We want to make sure we can do regular weekly/bi-weekly updates.

Picked up Doom Resurrection since the impressions were so good.

and it's actually really awesome. The controls work really well, the graphics are amazing and the frame rate is smooth. This is definitely not a subpar cash-in, and much much better than, say, MGS touch.
