The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

Based on some recommendations around here and from local friends, I picked up a few games. Eliss, DrawRace, Toki Tori, Must.Eat.Birds, Siberian Strike, Hero of Sparta and Baseball Superstars. It's amazing how much awesome gaming can be had for I think about $10. All great games, hard to choose a favorite. There are a few others out there I plan on picking up but these should keep me busy for awhile.

Anyone else try Baseball Superstars, its from the same company that made Zenonia. Really fun game if you dig arcade sports games.

Assassin's Creed is pissing me off. Did anyone in here beat it, or play much of it? There's the odd jumping sequence is wants me to do and the controls make the timing impossible. The game isn't being responsive arghhhhhhhh.

In other news, I'm about to beat Castle of Magic which brings happiness and sadness at the same time.

Radio Flare is great

Right? I was really shocked, very pleasantly surprised, especially since I've never seen anyone mention it and just came across it for 99 cents by trying my look at googling for a iPhone Rez type game. I love it.

Man, Rolando 2 is pretty tough. I am nowhere near close to finishing any levels under the time limit. Plus, I am constantly dying on some of them. Im' just bad at this game. :lol

Anyone know why Resident Evil: Degeneration was taken off of the app store? I was going to buy it and it's been gone for a week now.
there was a bug with their latest update that deleted save data, so they took it down to repatch it.

Anyone tried Tapstar or Beatrider?

Beatrider sounds cool but whats the deal with uploading your music? Someone on the Touch Arcade forums says they only last for 7 days or something? And you can only do it from PC?

Gaf! What's the best tower defense game out there? I saw this "field runner" that seemed to look nice. Anything better than that?

I don't mind if the app is not free, but I won't pay over $6. So.. what's the best game in that range?

The Creeps is really accessible and very very fun.

Geo Defense is very deep but it will take you a long time to get the mechanics down.

Field Runner or Star Defense imo.I prefer Star Defense because I like it when there already is a path and I just have to figure out the towers.

I love Geo Defense, but it's hard. Very hard.

Also, what are some good lite/free games or other apps?

I currently have:

GeoDefense
FlightControl
Cube (sort of Quake 2 demo thing)
Paper Toss
Hero of Sparta Lite
Terminator Lite
Assassin's Creed Lite
One Dot Enemy
MazeFinger
Bubble Pang
Fastlane Lite
My Brute Lite
Tower FREE
BClassicLite
Virtual Pool Lite (SUXXXXXX)
Labyrinth 3D Lite

iSniper Lite
Kotoba!

Colors! Lite
Google Earth

I have an iPod Touch 1G and I don't have WIFI at home right now (I'll set it up again next month), so what are some good free/lite/demo apps or games that I might be missing?

Oh man. The translation in Zenonia is so god awful lol worthy. Still a great game and I'm enjoying it. The story is confusing and hops around too much but it's fun. I'm never using my skills and choosing to save points.

I just find the char names so lol worthy. Freaking main characters name is Regret. Then there is Sun. Lol. Then in the second city one of the buildings is just called "Crack House". Lol

Well I finally did it

Apple has disrupted this gamers life so much that he is selling his PSP and DS as he feels he no longer needs them and gets much better value from IP touch.

Apple should right now have Nintendo and Sony very worried.... I know so many people who have bought app store games who are NOT gamers in general.

Loving Radio Flare, but does anyone know what earning a bomb does, and how to use it?
Edit: They clear the screen. Awesome.

Yeah, if nothing's on screen at the time it does nothing.

Yeah, I have Tapstar. It's really good. The hits go with the songs pretty well, and while it doesn't have a ton of songs it has a good variety right now with more to be added by Sony Music. The gameplay is just hitting, there's no holds or shaking or anything else [the developers say not yet, anyway and are asking for requests] but even still the hitting is challenging and fun enough. I really like the controls being in all the corners, although in my experience it makes lengthy sessions a little awkward to hold. Not much to say unless you have questions, 4 difficulty levels, I stay at Pro right now and am working to Tap Star. Online scoreboards and fun gameplay. If you like rhythm games, this is a polished one.

Your list contains neither Edge nor Zen Bound. Please do correct these flaws.

I was one of the people who would comment on "Sony/Nintendo plan to respond to Apple, nervous at iPhone gaming growth?" stories with annoyance about how no one is feeling threatened by a cellphone and that it is not a real gaming platform. I was one of them.

Ever since I got my 3GS on launch I have not turned on my 360 or DS. The games are awesome and the people that laugh or don't take iPhone gaming seriously just haven't experienced it or given it a fair chance. The DSi and the PSP Go are quick responses to the iPhone in many ways and I hope iPhone gaming continues to grow. I have the most fun with it, for the least money. It's crazy.

Star Hogs came out. It's basically a Worms, iShoot, Pocket Tanks Deluxe, artillery style game but this one has online multiplayer.

Going to skip on Tapstar for now, picked up Sea Captain and TNA.

I'm tempted but I hear it was a real dog of a port.

Billionaire does Columns like play much better IMHO.

you heard right.
i thought the game was eff'd up until i read that it defaults to accelerometer controls. I was trying to play vs CPU but my pieces just kept flying down really fast. IMHO the menus are a mess and hard to nav.

it was free but i don't know if i'll bother keeping it, doesn't seem worth the time to mess with.

Almost done with Zenonia and I need another RPG fix. Is there anything else like it on the store? Got Underworlds (too short), didn't like the Lite version of Quest (just didn't click).

Any other options? Chronicles of Inotia? SEED from Chillingo seems interesting but it's not out yet. Neeeeeeeeeeeed fix.

As an aside, any GAF opinions on:
Space Trader: Moon Madness
Trade Winds 2

I bought Drop7 because of Listen Up's recomendation. I can't get enough of that game, its great. Very simple mechanic yet its extremely enjoyable.

So, which will be the best Texas Hold'em and/or Casino Games around, in your opinion?
Holy crap, exactly THE SAME THING I was going to ask! :lol

I just downloaded this game...

21 Pro Blackjack - Sponsored

Which is quite awesome looking and all that, but as you can guess, it's only 21/Blackjack.

I'm also looking for some casino sim/Poker sim that looks kinda nice (I'll be looking at it for hours, so I want it to look nice, right?) and is free or at least not very expensive.

I tried the Lite version of this and while it was fun it struck me as the kind of game where you are constantly marching towards your doom no matter what you do. It seems impossible to keep it going for a very long time, even if you're really good.

Its the 1's which do you in, so difficult to get rid of and you do get to a stage where its just impossible to get rid of them and you're on your way to gameover. No heroic comebacks from the brink of death in this game.

Am I wrong?

You will eventually get crushed yes if that's what your asking. The design is such that by the end you have too few limited moves to effectively drop you back down but that's the whole point. The game is what your score ranks in that time period and I can guarantee you there is a large diversity of skill and multiple ways to pull comebacks and hang on much longer than you ever thought was possible.

The skill of the game and an individual's skill progression comes in how efficiently you learn to play the game and stack and complete chains before the crushing death comes. Your score really represents something.

So.....is Minigore ever going to come out? Also when is Worms supposed to come out?
Worms was just submitted last week and I have no idea about Minigore. It probably got kicked back. Personally I generally turn off my anticipation gene for gaming in general and especially on the iphone and just take it by ear. No reason to get yourself overhyped on something.

Ah thanks. I don't suppose you've tried the Mass Effect patch yet? I'd like to know how much of an increase in performance there before I buy it.

I wouldn't download and support Mass Effect if they offered to pay me 100 hundred bucks to reimburse me.

Well I'm exaggerating. ;) I would in that case but I don't own Mass Effect as I think it's a rip job.

I would try Touch Arcade. I'm sure someone over there has played it since the patch.

Some lucasarts adventure titles may be coming to the iphone in the future.

The initial story is that they are bringing their back catalog to steam.

Back by Popular Demand, LOOM, The Dig, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and Star Wars Battlefront II Headline List of Games Soon to be Available via Direct Download!
LucasArts Continues Initiative to Revive Classic Gaming Titles

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – July 6, 2009 – Fans have asked and LucasArts has delivered! Today the company announced a new initiative in its effort to revive its classic and beloved franchises by making its games available for the first time ever as digital downloads online.

In this first round of releases, ten fan-favorite LucasArts PC games will be made available Wednesday, July 8 on Steam®, Valve Corporation's delivery and management platform for the PC. Scheduled for release are classic adventure titles like LOOM and The Dig and hit action games including Star Wars Battlefront II and Star Wars Republic Commando.

The complete list of games to be released on July 8 via Steam includes:

• Armed and Dangerous™
• Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis
• Indiana Jones® and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
• LEGO® Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
• LOOM™
• Star Wars Battlefront® II
• Star Wars Republic Commando®
• Star Wars Starfighter™
• The Dig®
• Thrillville®: Off the Rails™

“This effort is going to make it possible to introduce a whole new generation of gamers to LucasArts’ classic games,” said Darrell Rodriguez, president of LucasArts. “It also gives more people a chance to play our games by making them available long after they’ve disappeared from store shelves. We hope our fans are as excited as we are about our plans and we can’t wait to share what’s coming next. This is just the beginning.”

This series of launches continues LucasArts’ new mission to revitalize its deep portfolio of beloved gaming franchises.

LucasArts previously announced the return of the classic Monkey Island franchise with two new projects due to be released in the near future. Tomorrow, July 7, Telltale will premiere the Tales of Monkey Island® game series on PC, delivering a completely new epic storyline and swashbuckling flair that will unfold across five monthly episodes. The first Tales of Monkey Island chapter is expected to release for WiiWare™ in the coming weeks as well.

The Monkey Island celebration continues on July 15 when LucasArts publishes The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, a completely re-imagined version of the first game in the series that adds updated high definition graphics, a re-mastered musical score, and full voiceover to the classic adventure game originally launched in 1990. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition will be made available on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PC via Steam and other online distribution channels.

But regarding the part that would be of interest to this thread.

We spoke with LucasArts CEO Darrell Rodriguez, who told us that this is "a passion project" for him as well as his team. "This is the first time these titles have ever been on digital distribution, and it's something we're all very excited about," he told us this morning. "And this is just the beginning."

When asked about the possibility of portable ports, notably the iPhone or PSP Go, Rodriguez noted, "On iPhone, you know Apple's policy that we can't talk about a release until it's ready to release. But it would make sense that we would do something like that if we were to go in that direction ... wink wink, nod, nod."

I bought a couple of games over the weekend, mostly due to the recommendations in the thread. Drawrace has been a big time-suck. I did manage to score 1st on a track today during lunch. :D

I very much hope they will release this on Iphone, as I don't want to jailbreak it unless I really have to. As for PC (and Mac), I was able to play all those games already, and perfectly legally, for years now, and with no Steam DRM strings attached.

Oh man... Having Sam & Max, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango on my iphone... Would be awesome!!! So many fond memories of playing those games...

Watching these videos of scummvm running on jail broken iphones is so tempting!

I just don't want my iphone to be unstable... I remember how frustrating OS 2.0 was when it was released. Those that have jailbraked their iphones, has it made the iphone unstable in any way?

http://twitter.com/minigore

Everything is starting to look really polished. Just a few todo items to go...

http://minigore.blogspot.com/

What Minigore is - what you're going to get for less than a dollar.

-One level of full 3D world rendered in the beautiful and distinct style of Minigore, full with bushes, trees and props. Be sure to avoid the terrain with poor visibility -- there may be a summer camp for vicious furries in there -- unless you need to get to that powerup!

-Three flavors of dark furballs, the furries, that hide inside one another like Russian Nesting Dolls that come apart when you shoot a fair dose of lead at them.

-Three different weapons: the trusty machine gun with unlimited ammo, a shotgun power-up to give you an extra boost and an exploding booby trap to catch unsuspecting furries with.

-Feeling cornered? Turn the tables by collecting a bunch of four-leaf clovers to unleash your inner beast and become the furries' new worst enemy by running them over to some really awesome banjo music! Not kidding about the banjo! Plus, you can do clover-combos to try and maintain the beast for as long as possible.

-Play while listening to the fully orchestrated original soundtrack with a taste of Monkey Island atmosphere in there, or if you prefer to blast away to your favorite trance beat, you can access your music collection directly in the game on the iPhone OS 3.0!

-The Egoraptor, Arin Hanson, creator of the insanely popular Metal Gear Awesome and other videos in the Awesome-series, starring as the voice of John Gore is something you don't want to miss!

-Support for both left and right landscape orientations for the screen.

-Automatic save and load on exit to never lose your new highscore.

Sound good yet? For the same $0.99 you will also get a free update with co-operative multiplayer, the mysterious mushroom and, of course, our contest winner Evan Hsu appearing with really weird goggles in the first update of the game.

My new (first) Iphone is going to be here after work, and I have been trying to get an idea of what the must-have games are on the thing - any suggestions? I know an RPG called Zenonia came out recently and that sounds cool, but I'm really in the dark otherwise...

If I have to pick the best game on the App Store, there's no doubt in my mind that it would be Drop7.

p.s. the Minigore game looks very cool.

*facepalm*.

Hey, all. We found a funky problem with Taxiball this morning. On systems with 3.0 installed, if you play one of TB's larger levels, your framerate will get progressively worse and worse until it's unplayable. (something changed in how 3.0 handles audio files)

Obviously, that's not great.

There's a workaround, which is sort of a pain - quit the game, and then when you restart, it'll give you the option to restore the game in progress. That'll restore the framerate, and resume your game.

We've got the problem fixed, but given that it took our last update a month to get through the review process, it may be a little while before the program's updated.

We've got another level that we're going to include with the update, and the App Store text will have the workaround posted.

Our sincerest apologies, and we're working as fast as we can to get this licked.

In the meantime, while I wish there were more we could do for those who already have the game, we'll be giving the 1.1 promo codes *all* away before the 1.2 update comes out. So the Twitter giveaway is still on, but there will be more codes than just the ones unlocked by adding followers.

Just to be clear, this only affects the largest of the levels, and shouldn't prevent anyone from enjoying the earlier levels of the game.

Thanks for your patience, and sorry for the trouble. More details, as they're available, will be posted on the blog. www.selfawaregames.com/blog
