iPhone is exactly what I used to fantasize about once they started advertising phones that could watch tv shows. Heck, I was probably dreaming about it once phones got color screens.

I dunno if anyone has noticed but Isotope has Web levels now. Which inevitably lead to me staying up till 5 grinding a new ship to level 16 the other night.
Back when I was in high school we use to talk about japanese phones having colour screens, lol wow that was some time ago.

To me the ipod touch has replaced most of my needs for buying a laptop, I can play games, browse and do/use all kinds of app's which help with one thing or another, not to mention that the device is extremely tiny for the power it gives out.

Space Invaders Infinity Gene is now the most expensive game I've purchased on the app store and it seems great.

I forked out cos cos after looking at Taito's library it doesn't seem like the games get cheaper with time or anything.

The sound is great, controls work and things get super hectic.

I'd have liked a tad more variety in the graphics though. I know it makes for a different and consistent art style but so many things being white or shades of it doesn't quite give me that visual buzz that I get from the sparkly multicoloured spectacle of geodefense or geometry wars.

I guess the cool patterns and animation effects make up for it though, especially when it gets crazier.

Bought the new Space Invaders. Played some last night and on the subway commute this morning. I'm really enjoying it. I really like what they've done with it. No chance they import Space Invaders Extreme over at some point?

Space Invaders Infinity Gene
Evolution, not revolution

Product: Space Invaders Infinity Gene | Publisher: Taito | Format: iPhone | Genre: Retro, Shooter | Players: 1 | Version: Europe | App version: 1.0.0
by Spanner Spencer

As great as it is to see classic games reappearing on the iPhone, retro gamers are not so vacuous as to be immediately satisfied by any quick, pixel-perfect emulation of a classic game.

They (we) expect just as much imagination and fancy features as any new game receives, which is a direct contradiction to the idea that churning out retro remakes is easy money.

Admittedly, Taito has released its share of quick and dirty modern revisions, but Space Invaders Infinity Gene most definitely isn't one of them.

There's a beautiful moment of nostalgic self-homage when the game begins with an ultra-basic rendition of the original, black and white Space Invaders. The four ominous sound effects thud in the background as you send a few shots off into the xenomorphic crowd. Suddenly the screen erupts in a burst of light and the gameplay evolves into the first level of Infinity Gene.

The DNA of the original shooter is still evident, but the gameplay immediately slickens, with a firework show of polygons and vectors bursting in the background.

Each level is quick, and grows by a small amount with every step up the digital evolutionary ladder until you're playing a completely different game (though still within the same, wonderfully distinct genome).

New weapons are equipped and eventually your ship is freed from its single plane of movement to follow your finger around the screen. This is pretty much all the control that Space Invaders Infinity Gene needs, foregoing the fumbling tedium of an onscreen D-pad to simply follow your digit's movements.

What's particularly clever about this system is that the ship doesn't automatically place itself under your fingerprint, but echoes your touch relative to where you first make contact with the touchscreen.

The game also looks every bit as spectacular as any new 3D extravaganza, and boasts a sophisticated retro aesthetic that most any other games would struggle to pull off. That's not to say it doesn't dabble in the third dimension, of course, but it sticks to its nostalgic vogue through the endless streams of pixelated alien regiments and behemoth boss battles.

Infinity Gene makes good use of the iPhone's 3.0 feature that allows applications to access your music library. Choosing a song from your list not only provides the soundtrack of your choice, but the levels vary in accordance with the beats and tunes of your MP3s.

That said, anyone with even a passing interest in music electronica will be loath to silence Infinity Gene's spectacular, metronomic soundtrack. The audio is every bit as stylish and idiosyncratic as the graphics, with a subtle hint of their genetic origins still present in every beat.

So just as we saw with Pac-Man Championship Edition recently, a game we thought couldn't possibly evolve has done just that. Infinity Gene allows a new generation of gamers to revel in its gameplay, fulfilling the promise of Space Invaders Infinity Gene's genetic legacy in a very real and wonderfully entertaining way.

Goddammit. This is the most expensive thread on the internet. Every time I come in here, I come out having spent $5 - $8 I otherwise wouldn't have.

I'm enjoying Infinity Gene but I just wish the evolutions were integrated into the gameplay. I'd prefer a seamless experience instead of stopping and starting all the time. Still, great game.

exactly my thought. still a great game, but that would have been lovely.

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone actually finished RE4? The game doesn't end! My review for it just went up at Slide to Play, and I just thought it was curious no one else has mentioned it yet. I can't be the only one that's beaten it?!

I've been playing Infinity Gene and it's my favorite iPhone game. It's challenging but so much fun, I love the Rez-y style and the ability to move all around and how hectic it can get. The optional lasers are cool and it's just a blast [I like search laser best so far]. I hope it becomes a huge hit.

I also picked up My Brute because I saw it went on sale from $5 to .99 cents. Figured I'd give it a shot and it's pretty fun. The game pretty much plays itself and you can only battle a few times per Brute in 24 hours but it's enjoyable at 99cents.

Infinity Gene is really fantastic...

...but I gotta say, this damned oleophobic coating on my 3GS is a serious pain in the ass for games that require you to slide your finger around for extended periods of time. It burns, I tell ya... It burns!

Got Star Hogs for .99cents, love it so far. Want Space Invaders but I am cheap, I have a free iTunes card from credit card rewards on the way, will get it then.

Space Invaders is pretty incredible and tense once you get past the Stage 1 levels. Some of the randomly generated song levels can be really insane, plus if you put in a 5 minute long song it's crazy to get through.

Bring on some 10minute long prog songs.

What happens if you play a 2 hour long song? (ie. Computer Games 2 Hour Special by Jaguar Skills).. it just keeps on the same stage for 2 hours? Because if that's possible, I'm so buying the game now!.

oleophobic = holy water

GO BACK TO HELL WHERE YOU CAME FROM FOUL CREATURE! :D

Feels good to finally be approved!

Had to lurk this thread for the longest time picking up games on the recommendation of you guys; huge thanks!

Argh.. I'm weak, gaf... I just bought the damn game without waiting for the replies. No matter if it can play the 2hour long songs or not, I must play it! ;(

Add me to the Infinity Gene love train. The game is awesome and well worth the $5 price!

I'd like to see Taito update the game with the ability to upload scores to a world wide leader board / community site. I'm probably asking too much, but it would still be awesome to have.

I tried out the level creation mode with Rise Against's live version of "Prayer of the Refugee" and level was insane! I'm only up to 2-2 and threw new game elements at me that I hadn't seen before.

Last thought, the Zunata soundtrack is insanely awesome!

For some reason the relaxing Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou music generates evil stages in Space Invaders Infinity Gene, where I have to constantly dodge obstacles and zigzag through tunnels.

Spore Origins dropped t 99 cents. No idea if its good. Really digging Space Invaders though. Passed on RE4 (Though ill get that eventually).

There is a Synth Racing update!!!

It ads a better framerate, music and sound effects, a new menu system and I think a bit more I'm forgetting.

Very excited, had to load this thread up on my iPhone just to scream for joy.

Additionally there's a game called Cataica, it's a free comic book graphics asteroids type game. It's level based and has a few ships to pick from. It's fun and looks great, so if you like the sound of this then I don't think you'll be disappointed...especially for free.
Cataica at iTunes

*runs to update iSR

Infinity Gene question:

If I play around with the Music function and generate levels at a fairly low level of evolution, when I play the song again with a higher level of evolution, will the level and enemies be the same?

Really awesome game, but using your finger does start getting painful on these kind of games. I suffer on Drawrace which makes your iphone really hot on top of all the rubbing so its doubley annoying.

but you get that from most surfaces, I get it when I use my laptop trackpad too much.

Anyone ever tried using a stylus or something to play iphone games? would it scratch it?

yeah was happy to see the iSR update especially when I rad it added sound and FX :)

other things that are on sale:

My Brute is .99
Radial 50 .99
Top Gun .99
Slot Racers .99

tempted to get mybrute

So where is the Infinity Gene Official thread?

I haven't been this excited about a game in months.

A regular stylus won't work - the touch screen is capacitive and requires something that will conduct. There are special styli available (pogo stylus for example). I tried one at a store, and it does kind of work, and is probably more accurate, but you feel like such a tool.

Out of curiosity, where did you see the update, through iTunes?
I'm still waiting to see it come across on the site I normally look at for releases.

Star Hogs is great my name is kapshin if you want to play.

This is very similar to Worms right? I might have to get that too :)

Yep, its AWESOME.

Too bad it makes my 1st gen iPod Touch cry every time more than 20 enemies are on screen.. :( But oh well, I'm getting the 3rd gen Touch whenever it gets released (September?)

:lol

I'm so gonna pretend to the go to the bathroom at work tonight so I can get a quick game in.

Is there any info on how exactly Infinity Gene generates custom soundtrack levels? I tried it with some music I had and it was pretty crazy, though it had no indication of following the beat (well may be shots somewhat followed it), so that's likely not entirely the case for the technique they're using.

I finally started playing The Quest after owning it since launch. This game is insanely deep, and a really nice old school WRPG. I've never seen this kind of depth in a portable RPG before. It's like a turn based Elder Scrolls game.

There's a full alchemy system, lockpicking and pickpocketing, a massive enchanting and spellcasting system, books to upgrade skills, loot, degrading and repairing items, a decent card mini game to earn money in taverns, basically anything you would expect to find in a full size RPG.

Anyone looking for a good deep RPG should pick this up. There's an expansion pack out as well. I presume there's more content coming, since this is a port of a Pocket PC/Palm OS game with years of development.

Infinity Gene: what a fantastic little gem.
if you love reimagined digital coolness on steroids from
your childhood buy it or trash your iPhone/touch.

edit: playing it with Daft Punk.
dear god.

Wow, may be I better start playing it again. Whenever I start it I don't get very far before I start loosing interest. Was it long for you before the game started getting fun? I might be in the minority but the first half an hour/hour seem to really drag on and on for me. :/

My understanding og the idevice IS is that the game is not ctually pulling any data from the track other then the length of play. So it is likely designed to make us feel like the levels are based on the actual music when in fact they are not.

:( sorry Its still an awesome feature regardless

I just bought space invaders. Pretty cool. I heard it makes levels based on metadata info, which makes sense because that's all an app can have access to.

Anyway, I was just pondering, I think we are on the verge of exiting the "99c dominance". Just looking at the top 25 apps, at least in nz, games over $4 frequenty make it to the top. Sure, they may not hold, but I see it as an indication that consumers WILL pay for more expensive apps. This is great news.

Furthermore, it seems that a lot of sales are driven by the more impressive games, leading me to think that the iPhone and iPod touch sales are being driven by a more hardcore audience than many think.

Based on these two thoughts, the platform has become a very real contender in the gaming space. People will start looking to it as a proper alternative to the traditional gaming systems. It's my main gaming machine, for example.

You have to like this type of RPG, but I'm having a great time with it. It's my go to luch break game right now.

The game doesn't hold your hand at all. You get dumped in the world, Bethesda style, and you can do whatever you want. The quests range from decent to so-so, nothing mind blowing yet. You also have to get a feel for what items you can interact with in the world. Now that I know what I'm looking for, I'm enjoying the exploration. Looking for a fight and scouring for alchemy ingredients, then returning to town to repair and spend gold.

I'm not sure about the US, but Monkey Island is at #4 overall in the apps market and its like 5 quid (compared to everything else which is either 99p or around 2 quid). Which is good because they're going to be making some nice revenue and means we may get some more adventure games. Shamefully, Monkey Island is a special case but I think there is still hope.

Another reason I think that the market is dominated by a more hardcore audience than we realise. Obviously, I'm not sure if it's sales numbers or cost that makes that figure. Games like Monkey Island, Worms, Real Racing sell very well.

Then again, maybe it IS price related, as GPS apps at $60-80 are in the top as well. I can't imagine that selling a huge volume (or maybe there's a large decline after the top 25 or so).
