Level 3-6 of Infinity Gene is kicking my ass. By the time I get to the form of that boss where he spews out bullets in all directions while circling around the screen, it's all over. I just don't have precise enough control :-(

Anyone have any hints?

That's my main beef with the game - the precision of the controls. It seems like it always takes 4-5 pixels before the game recognizes my movement, creating a bit of a jerkey motion to start.

I have huge, long fingered (hur) hands and I initially had a great deal of trouble controlling the ship in most of the 3-X levels. I learned, fortunately, to use my fingernails and tip of my index finger.

And Lock-On. That weapon is pretty much the only one I used, and for many of the levels I couldn't see how any other would work.

Lock on is probably my favourite weapon, but on hard mode things can get really sticky because when the enemies die they shoot shit at you and it also adds up. For this very reason the gravity weapon is also excellent.

I brought star defense for plus+ and that it was £1.79, very worthwhile tower defense game, good mix of enemies and weapons too so you can't just horde the strongest cannons and win.

Just picked up a 32GB Ipod Touch and im anxious to spend about $20. What are some apps/games I need to get. Already picked up flight control.

I've been thinking about it....the reviews on the App Store are a tad troubling however.

re: Star Defense - I thought it was a pretty flawed, boring TD game. If you want a good TD game and don't care about superfluous eye-candy, GeoDefense and The Creeps are much better games, IMO. Still, Plus+ is a worthwhile addition, and for $2, it's probably worth it.

geodefense is one of the loveliest looking games this entire generation if you ask me! Maybe not from a critical point of view but its one of the few games where I've felt the graphics have an impact on my enjoyment of a game, and it made me crave more of it and more games like it.

When things get hectic and you have all kinds of weapons going off and vortexes sucking in all the sparks, its damn beautiful.

Pac-Man Remix Review
Pac's back, baby. Pac's back.
by Levi Buchanan
August 5, 2009 - Few characters are more synonymous with videogames than Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog -- save for one: Pac-Man. Namco's dot-gobbling icon has been an industry standard for almost three decades, fueled in part by nostalgia and a still-addictive gameplay formula. Namco released a port of the arcade original last year for the iPhone that was just so-so. Navigating those classic mazes and avoiding (or eating) ghosts requires pin-point controls, and that game simply could not keep up.

Pac-Man Remix alleviates most of the problems. The game is smartly slowed down a hair, which makes the controls much more manageable. No longer do you wing around corners at the assumed top speed. The decreased pace of the game now lets you plan your moves in advance much easier, telling Pac to move a certain way before the intersection comes up.

Namco offers two control inputs for the game; only one is worth using. Touch controls let you swipe the screen anywhere with your finger to direct Pac-Man. As long as you teach yourself not to instinctive swipe the center of the screen, thus blocking your view of the action, this method is entirely serviceable. It's not perfect, though. Let's face it -- there is no substitute for a good, old-fashioned joystick in a twitch game like Pac-Man and you will nonetheless be occasionally frustrated with your inability to make split-second changes in course while swiping to avoid disaster.

The virtual button controls are functional, but the placement of them -- all squished against the bottom of the screen -- is just not ideal. There is no central zone between up and down for anchoring a finger and so if you are watching the screen to chart ghost movement and whatnot, you often find yourself tapping the wrong buttons. Stick with swiping.

So, what's remixed here? The mazes, for one thing. The new mazes are smaller than the original labyrinths and landscape-oriented for the iPhone screen. With a little less real estate to cover, Pac-Man Remix isn't as panic-inducing. Pac-Man Remix introduces some in-maze gadgets and gear such as warps, speed pads, and lifts that change up how you interact with both the mazes and the ghosts. The speed pad, for example, lets Pac race through ghost without harm -- but only over a short distance. Each new gadget is explained via a cute movie.

By far my favorite additions to Pac-Man Remix are the bosses. These giant ghosts dominate the maze. To defeat them, Pac must gobble a power pellet. The boss then explodes into a dozen or so normal-sized ghosts which can be eaten. When the power pellet's effects wear off, the boss is reconstituted. Depending on how many ghosts Pac has consumed, the boss will be smaller. Smaller, though, equals faster.

Pac-Man Remix is an attractive, colorful take on classic Pac-Man. Gone are the backdrops and single-color mazes. In their place are bright, cartoon-like stages. The camera has also been lowered to a three-quarters view so the game can be presented in full 3D. This actually adds a wrinkle to the dot-eating, though. If you do not collect a dot in a little tunnel area, you cannot see it until you eat what you believe is the final dot but the stage does not end. Little touches like reflections of ghosts on black floors is also pretty slick, but in "busy" levels the game can look a touch muddled.

Pac-Man Remix was reviewed with version 1.0.

Closing Comments
Pac-Man Remix is a huge step up from the original arcade port of Pac on the iPhone. Why? Because it takes some of the constraints (and strengths) of the platform in mind. Slowing the game down helps offset the lack of 100-percent precise controls. I think the controls will still frustrate some players despite the substantial improvements, and admittedly, I gnashed my teeth a few times as Pac ran into a ghost while I desperately swiped to change course. The new gadgets and bosses make the game feel fresher, too (although not as fresh as the recently announced Pac-Man Championship Edition for iPhone, which is an astounding game on XBLA).

it sounds good. I trust Levi, he knows what he's talking about.

I'd love to demo it but I am a pac-fan for ages, Billy Mitchell and me will be playing this late into the night.

Glad to see Namco is stepping up to the plate to put out some quality stuff, now let's see them do atake-two of Galaga on iPhone (take a cue from Infinity Gene)

Galaga Temporal Helix!

Nobody felt like cross-posting the big news of the day, I guess?

It's criminal only Xbox 360 owners have been able to experience Pac-Man Championship Edition, easily one of the best retro reinventions so far. It's fantastic looking and playing sequel. Microsoft tied up the console rights to the techno-infused reimainging, but Namco Bandai will be releasing an iPhone version of Pac-Man Championship Edition later this year, the publisher has told me.

I have no screen shots, details on extra features or even a release date less vague than before the end of 2009, but I can tell you Pac-Man Championship Edition is coming to the iPhone and that should be news enough to salivate over, if you've played it before.

Nailing the controls for Pac-Man will likely prove tricky. Once I know more, I'll pass it on.

I like Star Defense, picked it up when it dropped to 2.99 last week. It's a fairly sime tower defense but the plusplus integration and eye candy are nice.

Figures. Does play like Diablo except characters don't resemble what's in profile. Too bad. Don't know if I should buy it at $3 or wait until $.99.

They'll probably do a price drop when the next update come out which you should probably wait for anyway.

Okay then, what type of brilliant control method do you propose?

Edit: That Dungeon Scroll game sounds badass.

A fucking joystick. The Touch just isn't meant to play certain games.

As for Dungeon Scroll...I just snagged it and it's a steal for a buck. Awesome game! Everyone grab it. :)

I'm interested but I think I'll wait for Madden to see what's better. X2 soccer blows away Gamelofts soccer game so maybe EA can do the same with football.

Prettysure it's got the virtual joystick too. The "joystick wherever you touch" isn't too bad of an idea either. Oh well, I trust them to make it playable.

In other news, I'm buying all these new releases cuz I have nothing to do!

anachronous_one PM me :)
iFist impressions:

• This is a pattern memorization game. Each round, you are presented with icons representing RPS (rock, paper, scissors). You must then quickly enter the counter-sequence. For example, you may be shown Rock-Scissors-Rock-Paper-Paper, which you would then need to respond to with Paper-Rock-Paper-Scissors-Scissors in short order. It's an interesting spin on most pattern memorization games that simply have you reproduce rhe exact sequence you've just seen.
• The first thing I noticed was that even on my 3G the entire app --- from menus to the game itself --- is as responsive as any app I have on my iPhone.
• While I like the overall clean presentation, and background "wallpaper" changing to correspond with each different gesture is subtle but helpful, I feel like the hand sprites could use some clean-up and refinement.
• Seems like a fun Simon-esque game that would be good for killing 5-10 minutes at a time. Local and global online leaderboards are welcome features, giving you an idea of the high scores to aim for.

That's about all I have for now. I may check in later with more notes. Thanks to wondermega for letting me take his app for a spin!
