when professor layton 2 and scriblenauts come out, you guys are gonna change your iphone-only tune :lol

my experience so far...some games shoot above the cellphone game stereotype, but most of the ones i've tried are simply that. i can't take it seriously as a game device right now, i guess. not that there's anything wrong with a good cellphone game.

The way things are goin I wouldnt be surprised if there's scribblenauts clone for iphone before the DS one even makes it out.

Actually... It's 64 now! :D
This is all your fault! I'm hooked!!!

Dude, it was kind of attainable but now you've blown it way out of the water. :P

No way I'm going to work from mid twenties up to 64 tonight.

Damn you!

On a happier note, I think I'm close to winning my first CivRev game.

Playing as the Chinese and amassing an army to take out the Aztecs who keep talking shit. Also, Beijing is working on the Manhattan Project. :D

So I have been working my way through Geared. I'm currently on the last (80th) level.

It's kind of a physics game - there's gravity, and you use it to drop gears into place. The aim is to get a target blue one (or multiples in later levels) moving from a powered yellow one by filling in the gaps. You drag and drop various sized gears into the play space and let go to have them drop. There are 80 levels. It's a neat idea, and has pretty good execution, but a few things frustrate, namely the controls, while excellent, miss out on use of multitouch - you are dragging a gear, and it's only natural to try and place another one with another finger, but you can't. Worse, if you move a gear out, you actually have to put it away before you can manipulate other gears. And there appears to be no reset all gears, so if you want to start over you have to put all the gears back manually.

Also, some of the later levels can be brutal, and you need close to pixel perfect precision in gear placement, which is not that easy with a fat finger. And the gears appear to be placed in a sort of way that breaks the physics.

Still, worth a look. The developer promises a few improvements and a possible sandbox mode.

Geared Appshopper link currently 75% off at 99c.

Also, I hear a Doom Resurrection update with a new mode and 40 challenges.

Hahahahaha :lol

There may be one, sure...but it will totally suck compared to the real one. They've been working on it for a year, and a lot of that time there were people just spending all their time implementing new words. If an iPhone game comes out (that isn't a direct port of Scribblenauts) where you can solve puzzles by entering *ANY* noun you can think of, and having the object appear and act as you would expect, I will eat my iPhone. And buy that game for its replacement :)

Just got Orbital and I reached 24, so far. 64 is going to take a lot of time.

64?? thats unreachable :lol my high is 32 but my average must be 5 or something.

I think because its so quick to die, restart and die again it kind of stops me thinking too hard, i kind of just dive in blazing orbs everywhere and hope for the best. Its awesome how accurate I feel though, I think the aiming is spot on.

New high score in Orbital, 36 :D glad I'm starting to see some impovement in my skills.

DooM Resurection has indeed been updated, v1.1, challenge mode and 40 stages for the new mode just like the poster a few above said. Perfect timing as I just finished the game last night.

DooM's challenge maps are segments from the main story mode cut up and changed slightly, like play through an area on level 2 with only the double barrel shotgun.

Also a full new map to play outside of the story, separate to challenge mode.

Wow at Civ Rev dropping back down to $5. Man, that's gotta be infuriating for people who just bought it at $10.

this kinda shit really sucks :-/

Finished DOOM, fun game, but it got tedious towards the end. New update looks good, I'll probably come back in a week and play through the new map.

I am really confused by Civ... :(

I dont understand what is happening, and things that I want wont happen. I dont understand resources and turns and stuff.

ARH!

What is it you don't understand? I poked at the tutorial to see how it was done back on the 360 and the DS and found it pretty comprehensive, I think the same thing is on this version here.

Each city can have three different types of basic resources, hammers for production, apples for food, and sea production squares that can give you gold or research points, toggleable by clicking the little button on the bottom of the city management screen. There are various special resources as well that give you certain bonuses, stated in the tooltip you get when hovering over the resource square. Cities gain resources by means of their populations, starting out with one citizen, and thus only able to get resources from two squares (the square the city is on and one surrounding square). Depending on the amount of food a city is taking in, and certain buildings or wonders that can be constructed, a city grows in size in a certain number of turns. As the city grows, it gets more citizens and can take advantage of more of the surrounding resource squares. Following the same logic, a city produces units/buildings/wonders at a rate relative to the number of hammers taken through resource squares and the number of hammers required for the current item being produced. If the current item takes 15 hammers and the surrounding squares give the city 5 hammers per turn, it will take 3 turns to finish the item.

That's sort of the basic gist on city management, if anything else isn't clear ask away.

That it is :D Good to see more platformers that take advantage of the iPhone's interface.

I just randomly searched on iTunes and Snood is showing up for me:

International

NZ$5.29.

US$3.99?

I'm downloading. I'm a big fan of many of the EA ports, I liked Snood back in the day, and this version looks good (to me).

Large download - 40.6 MB.

Not sure if it's in the Us store yet (this is the international version).

Get back to work. ;)

dude, I played for another 30 minutes last night before hitting the sack and the best score I got was 11. :lol

demoralizing. I gotta pick it up again tonight and try to get back in the twenties, at least.

I'm stuck at 14, just trying to get respectable.

Initial impressions for Snood:

This game is good, it's the snood I remember!

You can play with old school snoods or new designed ones. Even on old, the snoods still look updated from the version I played nearly ten years ago. To be honest, I don't mind either set.
Here's what the old snoods look like:
33tjzw6.png

There are some new special snoods, but I haven't encountered them yet. I'm not sure if it's new to Snood, but definitely new to me are sleeping snoods. These guys have to be awaken by hitting with any other snood before they can join.

Controls are solid - swipe left or right anywhere on the screen, and tap the launcher to fire your snood.

It seems to have extensive multiplayer, and online achievements, but as I don't have Facebook, I cannot access these features.

Has Child, Normal, Medium, Hard and Evil difficulties.

Has a story mode, classic play, time attack, and puzzle. The puzzle mode is where I used to spend a lot of time. I can't remember, but if I play puzzle on Child, do I eventually hit the easy and medium levels?

Man, brings back memories.

Oddly, the menu screens are in landscape, but the game is in portrait.

This is a great port so far.

No. 6 All-Time on Orbital pure mode with 24 points. Not sure if it's world wide or just regional?

What's up with the 24 Hour score thing? Not sure what it shows.

Those are the high scores from the past 24 hours.

How come it only shows my score of 13 then when I just scored 24 in pure mode? ;(

Maybe it just leaves out the best score and adds the next best in 24h.. hmmm.

I'm sure it's been mentioned by CivRev is $4.99 for 24 hours. Amazing deal.

I love the way the iPhone works, still wish there was a better way to track releases and deals though.

And you're using Pandora Box?

I know who developed Gomi and I know that it deserves support, I just don't think I could get past the graphics.

Love the look of Gomi but after watching the video I have a fear that it'll run like a pig on my 3G. Can't even find it on the UK store now anyway.

With PandoraBox, AppShopper, and this thread you're not going to miss any sales or releases. :p

So CivRev is the full game?

Still waiting on the new touch models, but is its 5 bucks I might pick it up in the mean time.

Without the multiplayer i understand. Though it doesnt have a story mode just random batles and scenarios? (Never played Civ before). Its pretty impresive but hard.

I have been playing on my 3g and have not noticed any problems as of yet.

It's the full single player game. Basically it's the DS game with enhanced graphics, and some iPhone specific interface changes. I finally got around to playing it this morning, and it's fantastic. I'm sort of mystified by some of the critiscisms I've heard, this is a really good port. Then again, I played a ton of the 360 and DS versions, so I'm very familiar with how Civ Rev works. I can see how it would be overwhelming to someone who has never played it before.

Civ has never had a story mode.

If anything, the pricing and game styles on the iphone are making Sony reconsider what they're doing, at least. And just judging from podcasts, you can definetly hear people think things like "Civ Rev is $5 ($10) on the iphone vs $30 on the DS, wait, what?" I would be shocked if Sony or Nintendo (them or third party devs) outright quit making big games, and if it does, then shit. I'm hoping it means that it just expands and makes handheld gaming even better. The iPhone/iPod Touch is basically the ultimate for games you can pick up and play for a few minutes. But I still would like my big console-lite games that make up the majority of PSP/DS titles. A middle ground is always nice.

I doubt Sony or Nintendo would quit making big games. I think it's just a market segregation. Big PC games didn't disappear when flash games emerged on the internet. And those games are free!

It's interesting how such a broad market can be brought together into a single unified device. At the same time though, the standing of quality of iPhone games (big ones such as Flight Control and Zenonia) isn't quite par with any hand held console systems. Some of these top apps would be immediately dismissed on the DS. Not because they are bad quality (quite the contrary). But because it's just simply a different market.

The whole iPhone Only tune is also interesting. It's also segregation in effect as each of us start to align to something that fits better into our personal schedules. Many of us don't have time to play big RPGs anymore. Meanwhile, there are still many who shun the iPhone as "mediocre gaming" as they go back into hiding and play their PS3s and DSs.

I was definitely in that field of thinking when I first saw iPhone games. "I'd rather play DS". I'm still in the belief that "Console games are better than iPhone games" just because it's not there yet. At the same time, I'm also willing to accept it as "simply a different market with different demands" as there are plenty of iPhone games that are incredibly fun.

So it is the full DS single player game. Interesting.

Been thinking about picking it up for my DS, but I'm not a fan of having to buy physical media for portables. When I get my Touch I can use it as my all in one device.

I wouldn't even think about getting the DS game at this point if you are planning on picking up an iPod Touch. It's a better value in the App Store, has a cleaner look, and can be patched and enhanced over time. It's an easy call.

Not sure how Orbital will be in a week, but right now it's like crack.

The videos make it seem like it has a Peggle-esque quality.

There have been so many awesome new games / sales the last few weeks, it's like a 'Summer of Arcade' for idevices. Pretty awesome.

I stayed in this morning because I'm feeling a bit under the weather, so I bought a new game to keep me company. Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor was the absolute best game to pick to cheer me up. From the start, the atmosphere.. The gameplay.. The levels in themselves.. Everything is just absolutely perfect in my eyes. There was mention of this game being the iPhone's Braid, and I really have no complaints with that statement. It's a unique game that does a whole lot to distinguish itself from the run-of-the-mill games on the App Store. You're really doing yourself a disservice if you've not played this wonderful game yet.
