Orbital looks really cool. How is the replayability? Does it seem like the kind of game you guys would still be playing in a week?

I've played it loads in the past 2 days, but my enjoyment levels are questionable. I think I'm doing it more out of stubbornness than anything. It did start to grate today, its just so hard, but not in a way which makes you feel skill or puzzle solving is the key to improvement (i.e. seeing number combinations and making chains in drop7/dropsum. I probably wont put in anymore huge sessions due to frustration factor, but I will load it up now and then for a few games (which can last seconds tbh).

like I said earlier, prob worth waiting for a sale, because I only pay over 59p/99c for must have titles.

disappointed that I can't play it with my own music on either, so much for playing it on the bus.

I wouldn't even think about getting the DS game at this point if you are planning on picking up an iPod Touch. It's a better value in the App Store, has a cleaner look, and can be patched and enhanced over time. It's an easy call.

Yeah I agree with this.

My only holdout is the new ZuneHD looks awesome. It doesn't play games but, I can output videos at 720P and use HD Radio on the device. Also a 32GB model for under 300 bucks.

I hope Apple offers something similar with their new devices.

I stayed in this morning because I'm feeling a bit under the weather, so I bought a new game to keep me company. Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor was the absolute best game to pick to cheer me up. From the start, the atmosphere.. The gameplay.. The levels in themselves.. Everything is just absolutely perfect in my eyes. There was mention of this game being the iPhone's Braid, and I really have no complaints with that statement. It's a unique game that does a whole lot to distinguish itself from the run-of-the-mill games on the App Store. You're really doing yourself a disservice if you've not played this wonderful game yet.

Everyone's saying this, but I don't even know what Braid is (looking it up now).

That said, so many times a game is hyped up saying it's awesome, and I get it, and I don't even like it.

For example, I'm playing the flash version of orbital, and I find it completely unengaging (didn't know you didn't aim yourself).

This is probably a dumb question...

I have 2.2.1 and was wondering how I can tell if a game is '3.0 only' before I hit the buy button? I see it says '3.0 tested' but even apps and games not exclusive to 3.0 say that.

For those wondering where Madden 10 is, its been pushed back to next month.

Madden NFL 10 kicking off on iPhone in September
iPhone version delayed until next month
Product: Madden NFL 10 (iPhone) | Publisher: Electronic Arts | Genre: Sports
by Tracy Erickson

Tucked away in today's triumphant announcement that Madden NFL 10 has shipped on every system under the sun was the revelation that the iPhone version has been delayed until September.

Without providing a reason, EA Mobile pegged the touch-enabled version of the seminal football game for release on the App Store next month.

When prompted for comment, a representative for EA Mobile responded, "Right now we have no news to share on Madden. We'll let you know when we have more information."

As of today, EA Mobile has yet to release concrete details on the game, let alone any screenshots. We're hoping the iPhone version is an iteration on the game's PSP outing married to an inventive touch control scheme.

We won't know until September, though, since EA Mobile is keeping details on this big name game under a tighter lock down than Michael Vick.

On a computer it always lists the os requirements at the bottom of the description.

So I'd have to view the full requirements in iTunes for the particular app? It would make sense since I grab 99% of my apps straight through the Touch.

I know this is kind of different from what we usually talk about on here, but what is everyones favorite chess game? Trying to find a good one...

man i hope alpha centauri makes its way to the appstore... also bought vending machine champ. so far so good, i like the humour in it and the background commentary

I'm stuck in "Zenonia".

I'm at the part where I have to fight that Grim Reaper guy in the cave right by Adonis. You start off in a room where you have to simply push some blocks on some switches on the floor to light up the room. However the lights don't do anything (though they make the Reaper angry and have him start flashing). So I basically than just go and fight the Reaper but every time I'm JUST about to kill him he heals himself. Is there something I'm missing here?

When Braid came out, few games (if any) had captured the atmosphere and lonliness in a purely simple and easy way. The art style helped everything mesh together perfectly, creating a game that was as equally satisfying as it was engaging. There was also the element of mystery and obscurity with the story, putting a spin on the basic idea of "save the princess". The game's (arguably) underlying tones were built behind what was, at it's core, a platformer with a neat focus on time-based puzzles. Basically, everything about Braid flowed together nicely, creating a unique game that was still accessible to all and could enjoy it for what it was, or dig deeper and make a greater experience out of it. I still think it's one of the greatest games ever made, but as my opinion about the game is strong, the next person could dislike it just as much on the opposite side of the spectrum.

720P video output, who knows, but a storage bump in September is practically a given. I think you'll see 32GB/64GB for $299/399.

HD Radio sounds cool, but it's not important enough for Apple to worry about it. The camera rumors are far more likely.

Level up one more level and buy a bunch of potions. I had trouble with him, too, but adding just one level will make a huge difference.

Dude, it was kind of attainable but now you've blown it way out of the water. :P

No way I'm going to work from mid twenties up to 64 tonight.

Damn you!

On a happier note, I think I'm close to winning my first CivRev game.

Playing as the Chinese and amassing an army to take out the Aztecs who keep talking shit. Also, Beijing is working on the Manhattan Project. :D

If it's any consolation, I'm stuck at 64... I can't get any higher... :(
I think I peaked too soon...

I'm purposefully avoiding playing CivRev because I know it will be like crack, and I've got too much to get done right now... So it is bought, but dormant on page 11 of my iphone. Need to be strong!

Let's not forget, the Zune HD has an OLED screen ...

dooom, i still need to finish the doom 3 expansion, not sure if I want this on my iPhone. Fuck its only $2.99 but it doesn't strike me as an on-the-go type of game. I guess I have until tonight to decide. I wish it was wolf rpg up for sale, I'd buy that in an instant.

And that's nice, but is it worth missing out on the App Store? Let's not get into feature list bullet point hell, until we see MS putting some weight behind a games library for the Zune, it doesn't really matter.

This is the iPhone/iPod Touch gaming thread after all.

Thanks for that. I'm going to put it on my radar, nevertheless. It's not on special, and there are tons of games on my backlog.

Now I have Deep Green. I kind of purchase more on form rather than function -IF the basic function is there. Deep green has a bare bones approach to Chess. I don't know if it's challenging or not, because I'm crap, but enough features to play a game. It's presented fantastically, however. It's also one of the more expensive. It suits me and I love it, but I find it hard to recommend.

In other news, Have been playing Snood for the past hour. I'm addicted again. This version plays really well. I can feel the fever already. As I'm typing this, I keep feeling like the wall of text is getting too low and have to type faster.

What sets this game apart from Puzzle Bobble (again I haven't played all that much Puzzle Bobble) is the danger meter. Every Snood you fire raises the danger meter. When it reaches the end, the play area drops down one. There's no time limit, so it's kind of a relaxed pacing as you decide where to place your snood, but a sense of urgency. The unique (I think) strategy comes from the fact that when extraneous snoods fall off due to clearing a set of 3 (for example, a bunch of snoods were only held by two green snoods, and you clear the green), then the danger meter recedes. The strategy is in balancing clearing the board with the danger meter. Sometimes it is actually better to place a wrong coloured snood on others or to NOT clear some snoods just so more are cleared away at once when the right one comes along.

The only complaints I have so far are:

- Oddly, the menu select screen is in Landscape, while all play is in portrait. Not so much a complaint as just an oddity.

- The controls are very good, but sometimes I find myself swiping right to move the aimer left (you know, as if there were a lever under the pivot point, and I'm pulling that). I'll get used to it, but would nice to have the option to invert controls. I'm tossing up whether I'd prefer a tap-anywhere to fire. At the moment, it's only when you tap on the aimer. I know when it's tap-anywhere, this increases the likelihood of a false fire, so maybe it's better this way. It's at least swipe anywhere, and this works pretty well.

- The puzzle mode doesn't seem to have a large enough penalty for continuing after failure. If I remember right, the version I used to play would halve your score if you chose to continue. So it balanced the need to register your high score or to continue finishing puzzles. This version seems to just knock it back a little. I'll have to see how scoring goes as I play more.

At the very least, know that this is a very solid version, and I know this'll be a game I'll keep on my iPhone forever.

At this stage, no. The Appstore is a KILLER feature. It nearly doesn't matter how good the hardware of a competitor is anymore, because as always, it's determined by how good the software is. The appstore is now pretty mature, and a lot of solid apps. Prices seem to be heading towards a bit higher too.

That said, I hope the Zune HD does well and lights a fire beneath Apple's feet.

I have full confidence that Microsoft will but a good marketplace behind this. Unlike a lot of their other efforts, where they just throw any old hardware/software out there and just try to force it into the market, the Zune HD just feels like it has thought put behind its hardware/software and infrastructure - much like the XBox360 (hope it doesn't red ring, lol lol).

I'm more looking for a chess app which has a wide difficulty setting, and the ability to analyze a game; not merely saying which move is best, but also why. I remember Chessmaster having this sort of option. Eyeing Fritz Chess but kinda waiting for it to somehow drop in price. Any others I should be looking at which fits the bill?

ELO ratings would be nice, and an expansive database of classic matches (complete with analysis)

I'm kinda in the same boat as mrkgoo...I haven't played chess in years, so I've pretty much lost all ability to play the game. Online play is nice, yes, but the presentation is what made me get Deep Green. But yeah, it would be nice if the game would tell you why you should make such and such move, cause sometimes I feel like I'm just letting the computer play the computer. Deep Green is great, though, and I'm very pleased with it.

what say you guys on hero of sparta?

Boring. It has nice graphics and subpar gameply. If you want a deeper 3d game then Assassin's Creed or Terminator are way better, but a lot of people really like it. I found it a chore to play and finally just gave up.

The fact that I'm even wondering if MS is as committed as Apple is to gaming on a platform is rather surreal. :lol

Other than OLED and the Zune Pass, I don't see anything on the Zune HD that would cause Apple to give it a second thought, but we'll see. MS has officially announced specs and features, Apple hasn't.

Well I feel like a fool. Played Orbital all night last night, and just realized about an hour ago that the size of the orb is relative to the distance it is from either another orb or a wall. Must have missed that memo somewhere between wine glass numbers four and five...

On the other hand, I'm loving Karuki (AppStore). Really simple game, plays similarly to Doodle Jump, but a little more mission-oriented than goal-oriented, I suppose. Worth $1, definitely.

Occuro! is probably my favorite Geometry Wars-like game at the moment. Controls really well and is just fun. The game space feels cramped, to me, wish it were a little more zoomed out and the play area bigger, but it's great.

Better than Isotope? Honestly, I've put over 13 hours into that game, which means I'm totally fine with never touching it again (but I will).

Speaking of dual "stick" shooters, where are those Minigore updates at??

I find with iPhone games it's better to judge them on "is it worth my time, and is it fun to play" rather than the price. At a dollar, you'll end up with hundreds of disposable games with an amusing mechanic that gets old and isn't a keeper. Hero of Sparta does have nice graphics and a good length for a game that's only $1(if it still is, I believe it is), but isn't worth the time imo.

Well, as the iPhone is now my primary gaming platform, I don't mind spending $1 even if it gives me 1 hour of play time. $30 for 30 hours is a great deal. And I don't mind paying $1 a day for apps either, $30 per month is pretty good for gaming.

That's true too. You really can't lose, just depends on the person. I was getting annoyed that I had so many pages full of $1 toy games, I had to do a mass clean up and am trying to buy less "fun for a few minutes here and there" games and more "This game takes 5 hours to beat and has more than one trick up it's sleeve" games.
