Oh, awesome. Thanks. I see that I still have another $10 or so I'd like to spend. Now I'm on my way to Rolando 2.

What's the best source for iTouch games? Like, I just want to know the one site you all go to for reviews and picks, aside from here of course.

Slide to Play is a great site for reviews.

Touch Arcade isn't great for reviews, and the forums are full of people who aren't willing to try a game out for themselves (man, the number of times the second post on a new game thread is "I really want to try this game, but can someone else pay for it and try it first?" is remarkable - not to mention a lot of people feel entitled to a free copy of the game, just because they 'want' it), but the site is great for news, and pretty much seems like the de facto place to go for news.

I agree. It was fun this time, especially because it's the best FPS on the iPhone and proved it can be done well, but if Nova plays the same with a different skin then I'm not going to be too pleased.

I have a few sites in a folder and just do "open all tabs" in Firefox to scan them quickly. My favorites are TouchGen, Touch Arcade (and their forum), App Gamer.

Help me find the fun in Modern Combat because I just don't see it. The level design is severely lacking in tactical experimentation, the AI is nonexistent, and there's really not much to say about the gameplay except you point and shoot, rinse repeat.

LOL my friend worked on this game and he was hyping it like crazy.

I bought it the day of release and I pretty much agree with you on all points

Welps. I am sorry that you are not enjoying the game. How far are you into the game anyway?

I do disagree with some of your comments. For example your comments on the AI; from my experiences they fought back and made the game a challenge. In many situations I found that they would place themselves behind cover and shoot at me, and if I were to retreat they would quickly follow and put pressure on me. Gameloft also put in several scripted events such as flipping tables over for cover. Admittedly this isn't actual AI, but it adds to the challenge and experience. Overall I found the AI to be functional, sure it isn't winning any awards but for a game that's 4 quid I wouldn't expect it to.

Your comments about tactical experimentation and gameplay is also something I disagree with. Again, I found there were many situations where I could play the game in a variation of styles. For example, in the earlier levels there were a few rooms that needed clearing out which allowed me to experiment. In some instances I charged in with the shotgun and in others I was able to use a combination of grenades/flash grenades to help me take out the room (surprisingly I found the grenades to be quite helpful generally through the game). The weapons had different traits to them such as rate of fire, recoil, distance of shots and restrictiveness of movement - this isn't anything new, but it did make me consider what weapons I should bring with me.

The many nerd words I have said will not change your opinion, I know and accept this. Just answer me this Che: Will Forza 3 be able to rival Real Racing?

modern combat looks amazing to me. I haven't played it (likely won't - not my type of game) but I will go on the soapbox to stand up for it. It's a $7 new game that should not be compared to "full-size" experiences, and for what it is they definitely deserve to have hyped this thing. say what you want about Gameloft, they make quality titles that appeal to a huge range of the market and are delivering in ways that EA/Activision/etc are not bothering to start with yet (one of those guys will probably scoop them up, at some point - I am sure there's been some amount of talk between them)

that being said, I realize this is an enthusiast message board for hardcore gamers and those types want to be catered to as well - you want a game that looks at least as good as this (modern combat) with the design/gameplay approaching something more along the lines of a COD. that's fine - and I am sure down the road you will get plenty of games of that ilk. Just don't expect to be shelling out < $10 for that kind of product, in the meantime I guess sit tight!

Personally, I have no interest in Gameloft's success or failure, but I do appreciate that they are doing the legwork to lay a foundation in this market and put out a certain pedigree of product for a marginal amount of price.

The levels are pretty linear but the AI is far from nonexistent, they're pretty tough and put up a really good fight.

I don't know what kind of FPSes you play that are filled with minigames, but MC is a fps with a few different types of gameplay to break up the monotony and nothing more. You're being very hard on it.

Guys I work for Gameloft and can't really comment on the specifics, but I just wanted to throw in a general comment. As long as the frugal gamer/wait for price drops mentality is dominant as it is now in the iPhone community, don't expect miracles, these games are freaking expensive to make and we're pushing it as far as it makes senses.

I'm pretty sure you guys will dig Dungeon Hunter though, it's coming very soon.

I've ditched that mentality. I'll buy any game I feel like - pretty much all purchases up to $10 are fairly impulse buy.

I do wait occasionally, but that's because I have so many games on the iPhone, there's no harm in waiting.

Anyway I think Modern Combat has been pretty successful in terms of sales (it's number 3 in revenue). It'd be nice if they turned it into like it's own series like "MODERN COMBAT: URBAN WARFARE" or "MODERN COMBAT: COLD WEATHER" or whatever.

Because the iPhone community has a lot of great games from small indie developers that are just as great and cheap, so it's hard to pay big bucks to the bigger publishers when smaller games are just as, if not more, creative than ones from the big guys.

I'm like this too. I don't wait based on price, but based on how many games I'm playing right now. There's no point in buying something today when it'll still be there next week.

Hey Bresson, you should throw around the idea of revising and porting the N-Gage Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm to iPhone. I played it years ago and it was a pretty cool game, I was surprised at the time with how deep it was and how good it looked.

For the most part, Gameloft is targeting the "hardcore" segment. There aren't "a lot of great games from small indie developers that are just as great and cheap" in the FPS category, and barely in the third person shooter category. Some people like games like Drop7 and Peggle on iPhone, others like more hardcore games and tons like both. Gameloft is hitting the market for people who have their iPhones on them but want something other than a racing game or puzzle game, and I think they're doing the best job at doing that.

I finally got around to trying out Sway Lite, and I dig it; but it looks like the game is no longer available on the US Appstore? When did it disappear...is it another "Edge" type drama? I was so ready to buy it but it just doesn't exist anymore. Some quick searches for Sway on Google led me nowhere near an answer. Even a thread started by Costanza earlier this year was no help (no posts since March).

That'd be cool, I was around when we made this. The N-Gage was a pretty powerfull platform, too bad about the whole side talking thing and Nokia messing the marketing up. But I doubt it though since we don't make as many Ubi titles as we used to, and if we do one, it will be a new title to ride the Ubi marketing wave.

I think there was a crashing bug in their last update so they took it down temporarily. I guess the new update is held up in the queue.

Being there a few days is not enough to call it a success yet, but it looks good so far for this title yes. We also have a some titles that didn't so well to balance that. As for sequels, like any entertainment product, if its a success you should probably expect one.

Well, the Dexter game has been released - $5.99, 396mb (!). I'll let you know how it is when I've spent a bit of time with it - after, of course, it's finished downloading.

Nice! I want to get it, but don't even know what kind of game it is. Adventure?

Did anyone mention the new Flight Control update? I'm seriously loving the new map. It adds medic planes that fly their own paths. Adds a really nice new element to an already awesome game.

No offence to devs who are just working hard making a living, but I hate these hardcore-lite games. I don't think hardcore is even the right word, using it in this context is an insult to both the casual/hardcore market.

people can take simple ideas and make them into utterly compelling games. katamari is a hardcore game in my eyes, its a super simple, quick playing game but only hardcore gamers will know what it is and buy it.

games like hero of sparta/modern warfare are the real games aimed at the casual gamers. they see the cool artwork which reminds them of a famous brand and think "hell yeah call of duty on iphone!" and zing they get bitten. originality? deep gameplay? extended experience? does anyone remember the meaning of satisfying the hardcore gamer again? apparently its aesthetics nowadays. if its bright and colorful its casual or kiddy. bloody and macho is hardcore.

as a casual I would enjoy these clones in that they're throwaway forgettable experiences which kill some time, as a hardcore gamer I can't stand them and feel ripped off at the higher prices which promise a superior iphone experience and then completely underwhelm.

it must be a decent business model though and clearly abunch of people are happy with what they do.

Yeah, apparently; it's an adventure game mixed with some action sequences and some forensic-y bits.

In the game, help Dexter choose his next victims while always protecting his identity. Analyze crime scenes, uncover evidence and use stealth tactics to stalk your prey. Is the case best served by the courts or the Dark Passenger? The outcome of every choice and action revolves around the Code of Harry: only kill the guilty, maintain the mask, and above all, don’t get caught!

Guys I have a few more questions, I called Walmart, (yes I know), to see if they had the new 32GBs in, of course they didn't. Was there a pacific day they were going to ship the new touchs out to stores. I don't have a BB or an Apple Store near me, I guess I could buy online though, buy I was hoping for an in-store extended warranty! This will be my 4th ipod :(!

Also I don't have WiFi, is that something that's really needed, I've already downloaded some awesome free games, but some you need an internet connection for!

Thanks!

The developers need to stop dropping the price two weeks after people paid "full price" if they want that mentality to stop. It's the developers lowering the prices, not the patrons. We just reap the benefit, if we didn't already buy the app/game.

I like how this post makes it seem like its all the developers fault. developers don't drop the price because they feel like it, they do it so that the sales start flowing and it'll boost them into the top 100 (which will get them additional sales).

I am not saying it's all the developer's fault, but as a consumer you only have to miss a sale by a few days once or twice to just start waiting instead. Maybe it's Apple's problem if developers are doing it just to get into the top 100. Consumers wouldn't have the "wait for price drop" attitude if the prices didn't keep dropping after a game/app came out.

Edit: This just came to me. Maybe if an app or game I was hesitant to buy because I felt like it would be cheaper next week had price drop protection I'd feel better about buying it now. Something that said if the price goes down in the next 30 (or 90?) days you get a credit of the difference. Even regular B&M stores have those types of guarantees.

I'm horribly stuck in this game! Help!

Been playing more - after level 15 it gets piss simple (fan-made levels) but starting at about level 30, it starts getting pretty hard. Some of them are pretty clever.

I'm now stuck on level 44, and it's driving me insane! Anyone know the solution?

I'd post a screenshot, but I don't know how to do that from my iPhone yet...

FYI, I'm talking about Electric Box:

I can't do it, I'd either have to wait for a price drop or there HAS to be a demo for games over .99. The main problem with me is the controls. For games like Castle of Magic (that I bought for like $5/6) the gameplay was awesome but the controls made it hard to play. The same with Gangstar, game looks awesome, but I'm super hesitant in getting it without a demo because I don't want to buy a game just to never play it.

I'd love it it if they came out with some sort dpad dock. That'd make my day.

I finished all the levels and deleted it, so I can't help you unless you post an image.

It's a great game, and I made the same comments - after about level 15, they drop off in quality (some even have solutions that don't use all the parts), pick up around 30, drop off again, then get pretty hard for the last few.

press home and sleep wake to take a screenshot.

Ha, I remember this one - it wasn't the one I got stuck on the most, but it's an interesting one. I can't remember the solution off the top of my head, and I'm not about reload up the game and play all the way through just to solve it for you (no offense, just not going to do it :p), but as a general hint:

Work backwards. Use logic and elimination. For example - the fridge needs power. There's only one slot, there's no way a light panel can go there, so it must be a laser receiver. Then trace possible routes with a laser emitter.

Now I can't remember if it goes there, but the light bulb/panel combo can only work in one place - the two spots in the centre. In that position, chances are it will be powering the kettle, not the other way around (but MAYBE the kettle part is powering another laser to power the fridge).

Think about the three positions that are initially powered - the one on the bottom right cannot fit anything other than a laser. With 9 useable positions and 8 items, then there will be one empty slot.

All this stuff will hopefully help you narrow it down (it's hard to just visualise without trying some stuff).

I've spent like, half an hour or more on this stage. I just can't figure it out.

The laser receiver definitely goes with the fridge. There is just no other way. The center mirror also can't be rotated because there's no other way to reflect a laser to it. This means the laser has to be in the top right.

I've figured out several ways to reflect lasers around. Both directly, and using a magnet to reposition the lower left mirror, but whatever methods I've used, I'm either powering the kettle, or powering the fridge. Never both. There doesn't seem to be any other place to put the lightbulb and glass except in the middle, but haven't found a way to power the lightbulb. The mirror on the right seems completely useless too. Even if I was able to drag it to the left using a magnet, it would just bounce the laser to a useless location.

Anyway, I wouldn't be asking for help here if I wasn't stuck... :(

Just looking at it again, what happens if you:

Put a magnet in the top right, and flip the mirror it points to.
Put a laser in the bottom right slot. It shoots a laser, bounces up to the mirror that just moved, across to the left, down, to the rig - tick a receiver just above the kettle.

This powers the light bulb (left part of the middle), and shines to the 3 point in the centre.
At the bottom of that 3 point red wired, put a magnet, which brings across the other mirror (flipped), positioning a laser on the very left side to hit the receiver powering the fridge.

In my head this works.

DId some image editing, sorry for the crapness:

OMG!! You just blew my mind! That worked! I never thought to do it that way at all! I assumed the laser had to be in the top right corner because it's the most direct way.

Wow... I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!

That's pretty ingenious!
