I'm thinking about picking an iPod Touch mostly to play games (I'm pretty bored with the DS and PSP, and I'm looking forward to some pick and play games).

Is it worth just for the games?

YES. All the fun of an iPhone without being left phoneless when you drain the battery.

I disagree with the notion that the iPhone is inky playe because if it's convenience. Sure it IS convenient, but it not the only reason.

I only have a ds and iPhone and I play m iPhone more. This is probably just me, as I'm simply not playing more hardcore gams all that much any more. There's just so much content in the AppStore and for cheap that so that there's always something to do on your iPhone.

On the ds I'm waiting for interesting titles on a monthly or weekly basis. On the iPhone you can just grab something new nearly everyday or revisit something with an update. Sure it encourages kind of ADD attention span in gaming, but when that's. All you feel like doing, it's perfect.

This.

I use an iPod touch, which I don't always have with me. But in the days of bills and work and spending time with my wife, I don't have time for the hardcore gaming sessions like i used to. I'll find myself just plopping on the couch for a 30 minute dungeon hunter session on occasion, not for the convenience, but for the surprising quality and fun some of the gems on the app store have.

DS games in the UK are getting better in prices but for a long time I never brought any games because for £5 more I was buying something to play on my xbox 360, I brought my touch in early january this year and to me it's exactly what I want from a handheald, and i'm someone who prefers to buy the big meaty releases on the app store then the 59p bite sized games. Having real racing on my touch as a portable racing game has never been better.

Enjoy pals.
Just wanted to say that Critter Crunch gets my wife's seal of approval. I only played a couple of rounds, and must say that it is very professionally put together and the mechanics are very well thought out. The puzzle levels can be surprisingly difficult even though they look simple at first.

Medium 7 on geodefense is kicking my ass!

The Endless levels are so good though. How far has everyone managed to go on Easy endless level? I got to 103 waves (without juggling).

What strategies do you use? I tried one level where I had thumpers in as many useful looking places as possible and they do a surprising amount of damage when powered up and all lined up. they probably dealt the most damage to those bastard yellow ones.

Anyone have a chance to play much of Hybrid yet? I picked it up, but I keep forgetting to play it (mostly because I'm at work so much, lately).

I've noticed that the frequency of posts in here has dropped significantly over the past couple of weeks... why is that?

Less big games have been released. No idea why, but the train of originality seems to have temporarily dried up over the last few weeks.

ON THAT NOTE: I read something the other day about - bear with me - that free Flash game where you do nothing but run and play with one button to jump and avoid something that's chasing you, and how it had been ported to the iPhone. Then I lost the article. Does anybody have even the slightest clue of what I'm talking about?

I found this really cool game called Fingeric. It is free.

iTunes link

It's a multitouch driven game with three circles in a triangle formation. Each circle has a command on it. You play with your thumb, index and middle finger on each circle. You have a time limit to clear each circle's command and lose a life if you don't make it in time.

It's pretty neat. There's things like tap, hold, rotate, move.

You might find it neat for a few minutes, or really enjoy it and leave it on your iPhone. Either way it's free and pretty unique so it's worth checking out.

I just sit, watching, waiting for Lumines and Rock Band Mobile.

Gameloft blew their load a few weeks ago and things have slowed down ever since.

I'm a few hours in but still low on spells, the game is great imo and very good for pick up and play.

I haven't gotten anything since Word Ace Pro / Memovator / Cosmic Dunker I think and only Dexter and HYBRID are on my PandoraBox wishlist.

So I just tried the Genius recommendations for Apps for the first time today. I ended up downloading so many apps. I don't know how I'm ever going to have time to try all of these...

I'm too busy just playing Unify over and over and over trying to beat my high score.
Next games I'm waiting on are Plushed and the ngmoco FPS.

Can anyone remember what that Roguelike/Dungeon of Doom iPhone port/remake was called? I'm pretty sure we talked about it in this very thread, but I can't find it for the life of me (oh I hate you search function).

I got a touch monday and bought the guitar hero clone and simon the sorceror 1. They are priced right and great for wasting a few minutes, good stuff.

Sooo, I haven't bought a iTouch game in forever. I was hoping for some suggestions.

I only have paid for Peggle and Super Monkey Ball. I was looking at Monkey Island... but anyone have any other suggestions? Looking to pay $5ish but would consider a GREAT $10 game.

RogueTouch?

Some quick impressions on Real Soccer 2010:
I'm no soccer expert, but the controls seem pretty good and you can do a decent amount of moves using a combination of the two buttons and swipes, circle motions etc. Graphically it's improved over last years title, but not drastically. The music player is completely broken, it uses the opposite gestures of the default apple standards to scroll up and down and selecting songs doesn't seem to do anything. It always plays the first song on my iPod by Artist instead. It seems to have an RSS feed at the bottom of the screen on menus, though mine always reads RSS connection failed. The menus are pretty flashy, but the buggy RSS reader and and music player makes it feel like this could have used more time in development.

I'm trying to get an online game going, but it's just been searching for awhile with nothing to show for it. I don't know if the system just isn't working or if it hasn't been out long enough for anyone to be online. The leaderboards show that people have been playing.

Hmm... what else. There's a lot of single player modes, with a few different season modes and a 'superstar' mode where you play as a single player and unlock rewards.

Oh hey, the RSS reader just started working! Cool. It's showing scores.

iblast moki is pretty sweet. I wish more apps took advantage of the plus+ network

Yeah, both are great. Plus+ is exactly what you'd expect - achievements, friendslist, global leaderboards, challenges - but the execution is nice. Much better than OpenFeint which just annoys me.

Post your Plus+ usernames so I can add some people to my friendslist. Mine is Gunstar.

Mine is Foob...

Has there been any info on an update for unify? Fucking thing crashes on me
all time just as I'm about to get to level 40

In honor of the Critter Crunch PSN release date/price announcement...

First 3 US residents to post get the last free copies of Critter Crunch iPhone i will probably ever have :)

It's been fun giving our game away to GAF over the last couple of weeks :)

IMO, because the console Fall lineup is rolling out. Lots of people, myself included, are getting busy w/ ODST, NFS: Shift, Marvel, etc..

--- Just bought Lumines, will post impressions in a bit.

Looks like Square's Sliding Heroes just came out as well, per Touch Arcade.

Full version, $5
Light version
Gameplay video
Laughably minimalistic official site

The first news was the launch of their Sliding Heroes game we reported on last week. It was described as a "real time strategy" game in which you control units by tilting your iPhone. We've been able to spend some time with the game, and it's truly a strange mashup between a tactics game and a Labyrinth-type game. Yes, that Labyrinth.

Like most Labyrinth games, your goal is to make it from one end the maze/level to the other. While there are the traditional hole obstacles that you must avoid, there are also enemy creatures which you must attack. You create new units by simply pressing on the spawn button. There can be up to 8 units at a time on the field. The goal is to destroy all the enemies and make it to the exit of the level.

Since it is essentially a ball roller, all your troops move en masse as you tilt your iPhone. Attacking enemies is as simple as rolling your troops directly into them. There is some strategy in pacing the deployment of different troops depending on the enemies, though you don't really have individual control of any of them. Defeating the level in record times provides some incentives.

It's really a strange game and one that made us utter "what were they thinking" more than once. I suppose big fans of ball rolling games may find it to be a refreshing take on the genre, but I suspect fantasy/strategy gamers won't be won over. Fortunately, there is a Lite version that you can try yourself, and we suggest you do, if nothing else, for the novelty of it all.

Just played the demo of Lumines then... controls feel REALLY bad. Shame, because I would've loved it if everything was well implemented, but I just don't think I could get used to it :(

Any Heavenly Star or Shinin in Lumines?

I grabbed Chillingo's Horror Racing earlier for 3 bucks. It's pretty much the best top down racer I've played since Karnaaj Rally on GBA.

The lite version of lumines is only one skin. The controls aren't quite there yet. I was quickly able to adjust to the concept of the skins. Tap the screen to rotate a piece, and move your finger left or right from any place on the screen to move a block. The problem that arises is when you try to slide a piece down quickly in order to get it down in time for a combo. If you flick down it's supposed to slam the piece to the bottom, but many times I found it would get my gestures confused and rotate the piece instead or move my piece one panel left or right and then move it down. What's even worse is that there is sometimes a lag because it recognizing your movement, and actually communicating the changes on screen. Things like rotating a piece a few times and then slamming it down. You'll tap and then nothing happens, so you tap some more and next thing you know your piece is at the bottom and it's not in the position you wanted it.

Side note - from the main menu there is a store link and in the tutorial it mentions buying new skins from the store. I'm not sure what the $3 version gets you, but considering there is a store I'm guessing $3 doesn't get you much.

I like the skin in the lite version, and I'm sure I'll buy the full version just because I enjoy the experience that Lumines provides.

Lumines only comes with 1 skin. Additional skins are $2 in the in-game store. Controls are shitty, for reasons just described above.

If you are already a Lumines fan, and don't mind sluggish controls, you can still have fun with this. But if you are teetering on whether to purchase, its probably not worth it. Between the controls and obnoxious DLC, its a bit underwhelming.
