The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

Hi GAF,

I feel like I am the Ed Wood of Iphone gaming. Here is my second official released game. I wonder why so many games look so similar cartoony and what not... here is my approach. By the way, the side game was inspired by John Cage's As Slow As Possible...

if someone wants a code, please let me know.

cheers,

picked up Azkend today and have been really digging the adventure progression. It's probably one of the nicest puzzler interfaces I've seen on the iphone as well as packing some really nice production values from cool art to really polished animation.

I'd say the price is a little steep were it not so good looking and content packed.

I remember an app I saw a LONG time ago where there were little swirly things that flew around on your screen to make cool little designs. All I have are some screens of the app that I saved for backgrounds a while ago:

Anyone remember what this was?

It's a good game, but I find the Chimps Ahoy! games more addictive. I may be a bit biased, though, as I was one of the programmers on those :)
Thanks i didnt know that game. I tried the lite version. I wasnt a fan of having paddles on both sides but was ok.

Apple can't really fix it, because the iPhone doesn't know the difference between a file with game-save data, and any other file. A game or app can create or edit any files within its folder, there is no standard place, file format, or anything for save files. When you backup a device, it just backs up the entire game folder, thus gets the saves with it. When you delete a game, it deletes that game's directory, which includes whatever save files happened to have been stored there.
i'm sure they could do something, even if it requires a game to use a special format for saving games and older titles would have to be patched, there is always a way :D

Random question for you guys.

I just got an env3 phone. The charger is: wall mount - usb cord - phone. Could I charge my ipod touch via the same system without worry of voltage or anything like that?

Generally, yes. FOr whatever reason, though, iPod touches and iPhones sometimes don't recognise different chargers. It might be a current thing it might not. Could be related to an identifier chip. I had a DS lite wallcharger, that had a USB port (it allowed me to charge my DS with a computer as well). The iPod would not charge from it.

The spec for a USB port should be 500 mA. Hubs can farm out 100mA to a 4-port hub, for example. Not sure what the iPod needs.

I haven't tried it myself but you might be able to take some iPhone file browser app (like this one for the Mac or others for Windows) and manually backup and restore the save file(s) yourself.

There's some charge initiation sequence on the pins that some chargers don't do, most of the ports I've used have been fine (including a power brick and battery pack w/USB ports) except for my car where it sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

Just wanted to say that this game is AWESOME! It's like Doodle Jump but with a lot more thought put into the game mechanics. And that art style is totally badass.

This has already overtaken Doodle Jump as my 3-minute time waster, congrats on an awesome game!

Hey guys, I was playing Lux for a couple days and its gameplay gets pretty old within a few games.

Anyone know of a Nobunaga's Ambition (or any Koei-style wargame) or Axis & Allies clone for the iPhone?

Also, besides FAST -- which also gets old quick -- and reccomendations on flight/ fligh combat games?

An update for The Creeps!, my personal favourite TD game for the iPhone has just released their 1.4 update - DLC level packs @ 99c. Hooray! Update get! Money give!

Anyone wanting to know whether the extra cost for a 3GS or larger iPod touch was worth it, here's an example of the up and coming ZenBound2 (image from Touch Arcade) rendered using the old and new openGL engine (available on the newer processors):

I'm not sure if this means that Zenbound 2 will only run on the newer devices, or whether it will 'downgrade' to run on older hardware.

you know what you would be AWESOME for the iPhone??!?

Dungeon Keeper

I'd settle for a version that works on modern hardware/os, but an iPhone port would be very nice. I miss me some DK :(

Finally 100% Peggle for my iTouch. Good god clearing all the peggles on every level took forever. Such a damn good game. Highly recommended.

Now to beat Monkey Island...

I've got DK 2 working on my 64-bit Win 7 machine. Haven't played the original since the Win 2000/XP days though.

The Kings is a good turned based strat in that mold. It was only $2 when I bought it though. Not sure if it's worth the full $5 normal price. Still cheaper than Romance at crazy $10.

I just picked up Bird Strike after being a bit hesitant. I am pretty impressed by it. It feels pretty fresh and plays very well, it's pure fun. The first level was a bit too simple and I wasn't sure what was going on, but by the second I grasped the concept and had a blast trying over and over to get a super high score. I'm not crazy about accelerometer controls, but the gameplay, graphics and charm of the game have me pretty hooked. Really nice work, this is a great game that's not only fun but challenging.

The X Plane games are very well done.

Anyone looking to buy it is in luck, it's $2 now.

Is it possible to use iTunes cards to buy Apps?

I put a $15 dollar card on my account via the appstore, and when I bought an app it still charged my credit card.

Am I total fail? :lol

If you have a credit from a gift card on your account, it deducts the money from that until its gone and then goes back to the credit card, I do it pretty often. Don't know why it didn't work for you, are you sure it charged the card? Your iTunes gift card balance stayed the same?

Ya, it charged my card. I got the recipt in my inbox and my card still says it has a balance of 15 bucks.

Not a big deal, since I bought a 2 dollar app.

And while im here, what would everyone recommend for a tower defense game?

Canadians cannot use cards for apps.

Also, get the creeps.

I said to myself earlier today, "damn, I really need a new iPhone game."
Then I read this post.

Latest iPhone Game of the Week: Bird Strike.
I'm digging it.

my favorite touch game is still Kitten Jump. I was so excited because I got a score of like 93k in Classic mode, which I thought was pretty good. Then I found out that the game has a global leaderboard. Scores in the trillions plus? Nuts.

Really dumb question here, but I assume the games play the exact same (performance wise) on the 16GB and 32GB iPod Touch as on the iPhone 3Gs, correct?
Newer models will play at a better frame rate, otherwise yes they will all play the same.

I grabbed a game called Sword and Poker yesterday, it's pretty simple fun. There's a 5x5 grid, and you make poker hands by laying down 2 cards at a time. Depending on the hand, you do damage to an enemy (the 'story' is a dungeon that you're exploring), and you can get weapons with different effects, etc. I sat down to try it last night and wound up playing for like 3 hours. :lol

I also checked one out called Arctopia, it's a puzzle game using fire and ice blocks, and it plays somewhat like Lode Runner (but the enemies don't move), it's pretty fun as well.

Canabalt is still king, though.

Also: does anyone here have the Konami Power Pros baseball? I picked it up on the .99 sale and I like it, but I've won one game and had 5 ties because neither side can do anything but pop up. Is there a better way to actually get base hits?

I only know the bare basics to poker but it does look good, is there actually a "story" or is the dungeon just there for something to do while you battle foes? I would love to see it play like puzzle quest with a real story and party members.

Saying that my iphone rpg itch is back in full force, kind of hoping someone out there is working on a 3D rpg, the snes looking isometric games are fun but I would love a 3d one done well. With classic rpg battles instead of zelda style.

It's just your guy on a map, moving from fight to fight, and inbetween levels you can go to the store to upgrade your equipment. There's no dialogue or story aside from the initial cutscene/intro so far (I'm on the 9th floor), so unless you have to hit a certain point to get another bit of story progression, I'm guessing it's just tacked on for presentation purposes.

Need a question answered:

If I have iPod Touch 2G with OS 2.2, do I really have to pay for OS 3.0+ to be able to enjoy the new apps? Or is there a chance they will make future OS upgrades free for us?
In other words should I pay for the new OS or will future updates make it free?

Thanks!

At the moment yes, but it may be discounted in the future.

as a 2g touch owner you have to fork out the moolah for the 3.x update, sucks completely but imo worth it, it's just one less app you can buy this month if you have a budget.

A few people have been talking about Sword&Poker, but I thought I'd give a bit more detail, since I have spent a lot of time with it now (probably half way through).

It's a weird meld of a card placing game to make poker hands, and an RPG.

As bjork mentioned, it's a basic dungeon map broken up into 'floors'. Each floor has a series of predetermined paths with monsters (the monsters are also predetermined), and your aim is to get to the exit to the next floor. The maps never get very intricate, and normally just give you an fork if you want to get extra treasure. You can only heal using 'charges', which you are typically given one per floor (doesn't roll over, although some rewards are more charges). So the choice is basically risk death (meaning you have to start the floor again) for more loot.

The actual battles are played out one on one on a 5x5 grid. 9 cards are randomly placed from the deck into the centre slots. Starting with you, you are dealt 4 cards, and have to place two down to complete a poker hand either horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, and you have to use the cards in the middle. You must score at least a pair. You do damage according to the type of hand you make and the type of weapon you're using (see screen above for example). Each round of battle takes place in turn with the monster until the board is filled (and then cleared for the next round), or if ten turns are played (a pass counts as a turn).

The strategy isn't really about forming hands so much as trying to judge what the opponent will do with their cards. The biggest deal is near the end of each round where, if played correctly, you can fill the final diagonal slot and potential get 5 hands at once. The astute among you will realise for this to happen, you'll have to pass at least one turn (or have the computer pass a turn), as you always start. It plays out oddly at first, but you get the idea soon enough and realise that passing can be a risky affair, as you miss a turn in doing damage, and not necessarily guarantee that the computer won't try to use that slot (depending on how the board fills up, the last 2 or 3 turns have potential to finish 3 hands at once.

The strategy is never really that deep, but is engaging enough to keep you interested. Actually, I didn't like the game at first, and found the strategy to be lacking, and feeling bored due to not really 'getting' it.

But it really does shine later on, mostly due to the weapons (special weapons available in a shop can afford the usual effects, such as absorbing life, paralysing, etc). A shield adds extra strategy to the timing, as it acts as extra hit points that get replenished every round (not just every battle).

On top of that there are magic spells that you can use once per battle (when you get them later on). YOu can arm yourself with a variety of spells which has effects like rearrange the centre cards, swap shields, steal cards and so on.

There's also a damage meter that builds with the amount of damage you've done, and when full, you can activate to turn one of your cards into a Joker (wild card), which is very powerful.

It's only 99c, supposedly down from $3.99 (it says 75% off), and is easily worth that. I recommend it and suggest that you give it a good solid go (get a few levels in, where you get some more items and stuff).

There's also a multiplayer mode, but I haven't tried that.
