I've clocked about half an hour, so perhaps I can give some quickly impressions:

Graphically, it's amazingly smooth. On par with the footage I've seen of the PSP version. My only problem has been that since I tend to keep my iPhone at near minimum brightness, I occasionally can't see much of anything. Easily fixed, though.

Control wise - the virtual buttons work pretty well. When you're on foot, there's an analog control stick on the left and three buttons (punch/kick/jump) on the right. Driving gives you a set of left/right buttons on the left and gas/brake/shoot on the right. Contextual buttons appear when you near things (the in/out of car button is center bottom, searching dumpsters or talking to drug dealers is a little notification popup). Interface wise, it's very close to the DS version - the GPS is really easy to use, as is most of the stuff in the hideout. All the mini games from the DS version are there.

Load times are pretty good. From springboard to being inside the apartment, I clocked it at 9 seconds on my 3GS. I'm still trying to suss out how the save system works exactly - it looks like it's auto-saving after mission completion, but if you have to drop out of the app mid-mission it looks like you'll lose your progress.

So based on about an hour of play, it's got the performance of the PSP version with the control benefits of the DS version. Easily worth $10 given how much the PSP version costs.

Thanks for the impressions.

I'm sure the game plays well, but I've never played GTA Chinatown Wars, and was curious about the game itself. Is it really VERY much like GTA?

Perspnally, I've only liked GTA3 out of all the ones I've played, and mostly because it was mind blowing at the time. I liked the sandbox style of play with amusing missions. I liked having that feel of being in a 'real' world. San Andreas and GTAIV were obviously a lot better, but I didn't play them as extensively, I just liked messing about and murdering people.

What would you guys vote on as the best racing game for iPhone?
nfs shift hands down. asphalt5 is just a mess and full of glitches.
realracing was somehow boring IMO. nfs shift was a fun arcade racer with the best racing controls on iphone/ipod

I had a lot more fun with Most Wanted compared to Shift, maybe it had to do with the newness and being impressed that my iPhone could pull off something like MW and now I'm used to it, but I kinda think it's just more fun.

I've never played most wanted but if you say most wanted is better, then I want to try it. I am a sucker for racing games.

i noticed Call of Duty World at War Zombies up on the iTunes store while browsing around yesterday. Pics look okay any impressions?
I've heard it was pretty good, but it's been out a while now so a sale is probably coming up soon.

lol activision :(

Lots of people say it's just like the console version, but scaled down graphics and touch controls. 4 player online too.

Man, I've been eyeballing a 64gig IPod Touch lately. But each time I bought an apple product a month later they've seemed to release the next model. Should I wait for the inevitable model with a camera?

Always use the buyer's guide. Unadvised now, personally, considering they're expected to make huge announcements next week at their press conference.

I would strongly advise you to wait atleast until after the press conference.

How is The Quest?

Sorry this got buried and didn't see the reply. That looks pretty much what I'm looking for actually, going to buy it in a while and give it a whirl and report back later.

If you wait too long for the "next" touch or iphone you may as well not bother, we are going to see an update or new model every year and you would be silly to keep on waiting. While the original touch and iphone lack a bit of kicking power all the other models will run everything out right now unless it's dedicated to the VR chip extras, which is either optional or only about 10 games use it (none of them are super big hitters, it would be silly to weed out millions of users who can't buy it)

I brought my 2g touch about 3 months after it was out and currently it is still kicking bottom, and will do for a while yet.

Just wanted to drop in and give my love for CoD: Zombies.

I just boot it up and mindlessly knife zombies in the throat instead of playing the game like it's supposed to be played (I do from time to time, but knifing zombies in the throat is way more fun).

The controls are nice and the graphics aren't bad at all.

Great way to kill time.

True, and I like my 2g touch a lot (the 1g already looks like a big lump of shit in comparison)

but there are only three generations of touch so far, and the way sales ramped, I'd say the majority are probably 2g & 3g. When the next gen comes out, if it includes the VR at all capacities, or even more power, you start to move the installed base towards the more powerful devices.

There is the potential for that to shift quite quickly, depending on where developers go.

Personally I'm happy with my 2g, and think its a big shame that the 8GB touch isn't 3g. But if I was to buy another touch now I'd go for the fastest possible, which means the 32GB touch.

Sometimes it's a risk you have to take or not own one for another half a year :( also the 3g touch already has the innards of a 3Gs minus the phone stuff, because of that they lowered the price of the 2g which is the 8 and 16gig units (I think, was last time I heard) so I dunno if another price drop of such value would appear this year, a 4g touch might have an added camera and better battery but I doubt it will be a generation jump.

*edit* noticed I said 2g has 3Gs insides, I mean 3g.

true. But thats why i'd recommend a 3g now (32GB or 64GB). the 2g (the current 8GB) is on the edge and will be the first to be obsoleted (or at least start to suffer performance issues).

I agree we probably won't see a huge jump in performance next time around - we got a big jump last time. This time probably either a price drop, or camera.

At the bare minimum you should wait through the Apple Event scheduled for next week to see what happens. It is very doubtful a new Touch will be released, as they generally drop in September as has already been said, but there is the possibility of a storage capacity bump or price drop.

Thanks to everyone that bought it, I hope you're enjoying it! It helps if you're able to review the game on the App store, I'd really appreciate that.

dock, I'm having some issues with Tumbledrop. The first medium level crashes whenever I fail. I have to quit out to the OS menu. 32GB 3G iTouch.
An updated version (v1.01) has just been released (is it on the US store yet?), which fixes a couple of small bugs. :) Hopefully this should fix the problem for you.

I downloaded the update from the US store, but it still freezes. Is there any way to be sure I'm running 1.01?

Edit: Works now. Update didn't download the first time for some reason.

Chinatown Wars is a stunning little game .... so far. Glad to see it ported to the idevice family as I missed out on the DS/PSP versions.
I want to buy it but currently I have way too much on my plate, quite a deal at the current price too.

I hope they include tilt controls for the cars in an update or something. That's the only thing keeping me from enjoying it, since I tend to crash into shit till my car explodes with the digital controls

The game starts out simple, but it adds more and more things like equipment and abilities as you go on. Ends up with a good amount of depth, plus single iphone multiplayer.

Assuming they keep the once a year schedule, multicore ARM and PowerVR chips will probably be the norm by then, so there's a decent chance of those showing up. In terms of raw performance I think the jump may be big, but in practice it probably won't be as big of a jump cause most devs will still target 3G and 3GS.

Speaking of which, a Freeverse guy (over on SA) posted some device usage data they have. Basically there's a shitload of 3G, 3GS, and 2nd gen touch, with all the other devices taking smaller chunks. The $99 3G and $199 touch will keep those around in good numbers...unless they replace those with 3GS and 3rd gen next week.

I had to share this! Tumbledrop is now in the 'Hot Games' list alongside GTA! :D

http://toucharcade.com/2010/01/20/s...d-more-with-segas-upcoming-official-emulator/

Gizmodo reports that Sega is about to release a free iPhone emulator called Ultimate Genesis which will offer SEGA Genesis games to purchase via downloadable content (DLC).

The free app will include Space Harrier II and offer the following titles as additional purchases.

Sonic the Hedgehog: $5.99
Golden Axe: $4.99
Ecco the Dolphin: $2.99
Shining Force: $2.99
The move seems like an obvious one, but has been made possible due to some changes in Apple's rules. The new app is supposed to appear in the App Store sometime early Feb.

Sega are pulling all the stops in 2010 :D

Since they have Sonic 1 already as an app I am kind of glad I didn't buy it after thinking about owning a mobile sonic for ages, this though will be mine.

Also this shows that piracy is getting to app's more then ever, why? because a lot of developers now have or are releasing free app's with ingame DLC, which currently can not be pirated.

*edit* shining force, FUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKK

I wonder if this emulator is the emulator that guy was working on Sonic CD....
I don't think so, sega updated the sonic 1 emulator a few months back to run better and I think it's just that with new roms.

Aaron said:
Why? There are at least a half dozen SF clones that outdo the original in every way already on the iphone, and most of them are cheaper too.
Because I love Shining Force?

Point me in the direction of some of titles you have in mind… and I'll check them out as well.
