Because I love Shining Force?

Point me in the direction of some of titles you have in mind… and I'll check them out as well.
Reign of Swords is pretty darn close, and it's free right now. I like Battle of Wesnoth myself, though it's different from the pure SF mode.

Good deal. I already got Reign this morning... and I just snagged the demo of Wesnoth. I'll give em both a shot.

GTA Chinatown Wars is an incredible accomplishment in my opinion. I'm really enjoying it. The driving takes a bit getting used to and the analog can be a little wonky for walking around but after about an hour with it, I feel really comfortable with the controls. There is so much to do in the game. I'm enjoying every minute of it and for 9.99...it's a complete steal

About the Sega emulator: why is it that Sonic is more expensive than the other games? Just name recognition? I'm glad for Shining Force at 3 bucks, but you'd think a newer game would command a higher price.

Long ago when sega released Sonic 1 as a single emulated game on the app store they set the price at £3.49, it's been in the UK top 100 every day since release at that price and still is currently, they would be fools to drop the price with the new all in 1 emulator. If they make the mega collection version cheaper no one will buy the stand alone version.

Golden Axe also has it's own app but it's not in the top 100 here but I guess they can't really go back on prices as people will just moan and complain that they paid full price only a few weeks before.

Ah, ok. I didn't know they were available other ways. I hope this emulator thing at least gets all the games from the console Ultimate Collection thing, it'd be sweet to have all the Phantasy Stars on there.

PSIV would make my year.

Exactly. It's based on potential sales and since iPhone doesn't use a tier structure they give them different prices.

I had to share this! Tumbledrop is now in the 'Hot Games' list alongside GTA! :D

Big time congrats!

I enjoyed the web version, so of course I picked up the App. The concept, presentation, and everything is really well done. It's super quick to pick-up and play too.
The device was made for fun games like Tumbledrop.

Hey does anyone else have Glyder 2? I feel like the controls get screwed up to the point where I just dip down a little and she goes into a dive for no reason. This didn't happen with the 1st game and recalibrating doesn't seem to help.

If the Megadrive emulator runs well on a 3G iPhone, I might buy a few games. Otherwise, I'll wait for a PSP Minis port or something like this :(

Hey everyone! Just wanted to say That Tumbledrop is AWESOME! Love love love it. The Artstyle is soo great, the blocks are so happy! Great job developer, I'm so writing an endorsing review of this game!

Currently Sonic 1 (the stand alone emulated version on the app store) hits around 30fps on old devices, can't remember if it was before or after the update for improved performance.

Might be improved again but doubt it, I can see sega going for a choppy 30 and calling it a night since most games will play fine at that rate.

I like tumbledrop a fair bit (gave it 4 stars on the app store (UK)) but I hate the load time!! Any chance of optimising this over time or is it something you're stuck with due to the use of Unity?

I'm just not sure why anyone would want to play 16-bit platformers or action games designed to work with a button interface on an iPhone. Shining Force and Phantasy Star, that I can see. They're going to overlay a d-pad and 3 buttons on the screen? If this Genesis/MD platform is truly emulation, wouldn't much of the text designed for TV screens be really difficult to read on a phone screen?

Because it's really not that big of a difference, or hurdle, in practice. I thought gaming controls would suck, but they're as good as the developer wants them to be. Gameloft nails it everytime, with the best FPS controls on a handheld, and platformers like Bionic Surfer or Castle of Magic control just fine. I'm not sure about the text, but I'm sure Sega would catch on to that in testing.

At first I found on-screen buttons odd but once you learn and practice using them they can be rather good, long as the developer tests them well before releasing their app. Also analog sticks do not work well with side on platformers, not many games do that now.

Sonic 1 has the ability to run the game's res in a native 320x224 so the spare space becomes an area where they can stick buttons and a pretty border. If you play full screen the buttons are more transparent, might be a pain for games with text but something like shining force doesn't require you to place your left thumb over the dpad all the time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IqVbkSXa_s - old build from first launch, the emulator was improved since then.

Looks like FF1 and 2 are ports of the fantastic PSP version, hope they charge a fair amount though. I could see them charging 9.99 each, but both of them for the same price would be perfect.

From the looks of it, they made a touch interface for the battles. I see the big dpad too, but I was hoping for a universal swipe moving scheme like sword of fargoal, that works so well compared to virtual d-pads.

Please square enix for the love of god release the dragon quest 1 to 3 ports as well on the iPhone. I'm seriously thinking apple is going to battle nintendo in the next round of portable console wars. I love the psp, but i'm starting to love the iPhone more than just an iPod and phone.

I've never played FF I or II, but these look really nice.

Game-wise, if you only had to get one, which would be 'better'?

They are both suuuuper old-school JRPGS, but if I had to pick I'd say get 2 because it has an actual story, 1 doesn't have much of one.
