Speaking of iPhone indie development, Does anyone know how much would a game like Loco Roco, Wispin or Spider actually cost and how long is their development ?

So, our iPhone label, PikPok, just announced another game in the Flick Kick series - Flick Kick Football - a goal kicking game with multiple modes, variable walls of defenders, and OpenFeint support.

It's all packaged up in a 70s comic book style, reminiscent of "Roy of the Rovers". See screens below.

The guys are still polishing the title, but we should be submitted before the end of the week, which hopefully means we are out sometime next week at $0.99.

In other iPhone related news, we have increased the size of our iPhone team, and have started working on some much more ambitious iPhone games. Probably be a few months before we announce either of those officially though.[/QUOTE]
Excellent news, I asked about the possibility of that very game a few months, great to see it's actually coming out!

Let us know when it's up.

While we are on the topic, I want to mention that this thread has been especially useful in helping to design my game (to steer it towards being a better experience) and the feedback I've got has been invaluable, which I otherwise would not have had access to.

TouchArcade is great and all, but gaf represents a broader (and more mature, even) type of gamer and it's so important to get that kind of perspective as well.

Apologies for pimping a bit, mind you it's pretty harsh being a very small-time dev (unless you have a lot of money or a big name, the world's general opinion is "no one cares about your little dumb game!") so when one can find a place where there can be a little dialogue about it, it makes all the difference :)

I actually love the pimping that goes on here.

Cool art style for flick kick, looks nice!

Thanks. We wanted to do something a little different as there are a few goal kicking games out there - tapping into people's childhood memories seemed like a good path to go down. All in all, the graphic and audio presentation has come together really well if I do say so myself.

There should be a trailer up at launch. Not sure how much of that will be live action versus game footage, but chances are you'll get to see more of the game in action.

Nice timing for the world cup :) also football > that weird egg americans kick into the air.

And grats in making a bigger iphone team, looks like you people are earning a profit in that case, which is good!

Absolutely. I can't believe that anyone is complaining about the actual developer announcing their games here. It's a lot better than some thinly-veiled shill post.

I was interviewed on a podcast (Videogame Outsiders B-Team) recently, discussed a few things such as creation of our game, moving from big studio to small studio gamedev, a bit of controversy as far as what goes on in both scenes (and why I'd like to stay independent, but may not). It's a little longform (I'm new to that stuff) but if you are interested in what goes on behind the scenes of game development (large and small), you may dig it..

And a quick description:

It's Indie in every sense of the word, so I could really use some GAFfer support in building up some pre-release hype! Check out: http://www.grumpyfacestudios.com

Thanks a bunch guys!

Game dev on GAF? It'll be supported by me, and many others. A plus is the art style, very nice. :D

sounds interesting. I'd like an ipad version of that and/or search 60 (not sure of the differences), as its the sort of thing that I'd play with my kids

Cheers. I got a bit freaked out when I read the complaint about the devs posting. I read Neogaf a lot more than I post, but I've been here a long time. Definitely don't want to rock the boat.

This is a sequel to Super Search 60 and an attempt to give it a fresh start. It goes for 90 seconds now, a new list of objects, the game board "staggers" to make it easier for newcomers and more challenging at the end of the game.

Funny you mentioned iPad as I just ordered one yesterday. I'd been holding off buying one as I haven't really had a proper paycheque in a few years. But things picked up with Doodle Find hitting #1 in a few territories, so I figured - what the hey.

So - once it arrives, I'll be uprezzing Doodle Find and friends to crispy iPad resolutions. Also iPhone HD resolution also.

Taxman is still silent about what is going on, which makes me believe he is still doing something for sega.

The megadrive/genesis collection was rumoured to be binned, shortly after that rumour they released sonic 2 as a stand alone app like sonic 1 is, you're guess is as good as mine.

Oh man. I was looking forward to Shinning Force on the IPhone.

Still got my hopes for a Sonic CD showing at E3. I mean why else stay silent?

Yeah, I'd like to see more Sonic on iPhone.

The controls in the current ports are fine, but I think they could do something even better with a little more work. It's nice seeing Sonic 2 at 100% speed on my phone, though.

Put me down for dev shilling as well. There are so many games I never would have even heard of if not for the devs posting screens and summaries of them.

Definitely, I wish the XBLIG dudes did this more too.

Wow, Apple has been taking a little longer for their approval process than before.

They were doing approvals like within days of submission, but now they're up to a week. We had to delay our game release but it looks like Mouse Porno has finally been approved for release on June 8th! (wahoo!)

Tytree, if you're reading this, PM ME. You get a free copy of our game for suggesting an awesome name like Mouse Porno. And you get to play it before everybody else! FUCK YA!

Looks cool... I enjoy the Flick Kick FieldGoal game. I just wish you guys would put out an update that fixes the annoying detection bug. There are so many field goals I kick that are at the poles (and don't bounce off them) or just inside them but the game counts the kick as a miss.

agreed, I love the game but this problem is annoying.

Music fully in tact too, excellent.

Oh seems there is a world at war: zombies II, I guess activision felt they needed a bump in sales again :lol

I wanted shining force also, and I hope sonic cd does show up as it would be a great ice breaker before sonic 4's release at the end of the year.

Damn I wanna buy it but I'm likely gonna be switching to the evo within a week or two. Will that game be coming out for android?

Nice! Finally! I have played so much of this game in the last month as we did final tuning on it. Anxious to see what people think of it.

BTW, we are planning to update it and add leaderboards and achievements. If you have any ideas for that sort of thing...you know where to find me. :P

Any plans for an iPad version or making this universal? I'll buy this one either way.

EDIT: You probably can't answer that. No worries. I'll purchase it as soon as I get home. It's too big for 3G. :(

Robot Unicorn Attack is mine, whoo! I also like how 2.99 USD is 22 SEK, normally they'd just make it 30 SEK. Appstore sure has nice regional prices :)

We looked into that extensively and determined that the issue is primarily a depth buffer/draw order sorting issue that creates the illusion of success when it is actually a miss.

Either way, yes, we need to find a way to resolve it because the experience is flawed.

We have a loose plan to revisit all the legacy Flick Kick games with recent optimisations and new functionality once Flick Kick Football is out, and trying to resolve this specific issue is on the list.

I'm not a fan of OpenFeint. I'm just one guy though. I know most people love it for some reason.

It is a plague. I'm hoping it gets ditched for Game Center in 4.0 but I'm guessing it won't cause all the 3.0 users.

So, just out of curiosity - any GAFers in the SF Bay Area? We're getting close-ish to a first reveal of our next game, and we'd love to get some peoples' impressions of how things are so far. If you're interested, drop me a line via PM.

Thanks!

I'm in the bay area. Are you asking if we want to test/give you feedback on your game? I'm down.

Well I can't get it going on my 3G, I'm guessing a restart will fix that...but I shouldn't have to do that!

It works fine on the iPad at least, main thing I want (from a lot of iPhone games really) is the option to flip the screen orientation (or auto rotate with tilt I guess). With the Apple case in the low raised position most iPhone games default to the opposite orientation, it's pretty obnoxious.

Otherwise maybe make the slide gesture recognition more sensitive, or adjust the jump/dashing rules to compensate if they don't already. The problem with the gesture controls is that you always do a jump before the dash so if it doesn't compensate for that it's at a disadvantage compared to the buttons.

And I guess a general non game question, how are the games created? Originally all Flash then you have to port from there or is there some other original code base to work from?

OpenFeint sucks because it kills performance. You end up with a micro-stutter-infested game. Any game that was OpenFeint-free, and then added it in an update, has performed noticeably worse, post-update.

Only reason any devs use it is because it's an easy way to implement leaderboards and achievements.

Grabbed RUA, looking forward to getting my Erasure on.

Gamevil says Soccer Superstars will be up real soon now:

As someone who burned too many hours on the original Baseball Superstars, and knowing the World Cup is coming up, I am screwed on this one.
Just bought this. Couldn't resist with visuals like that.

I see that The Quest has a lot of expansions... What I wonder is how does it work, you buy all the expansions and have to play them one by one or are they automatically enabled into the main game when you have them installed? It seems pointless to have like 5 icons for same game. Anyone can clarify it for me please?

Disagree, openFeint works fine if implemented properly! It's definitely not perfect, but it's made life a lot easier for everybody, and I've seen plenty of games where it's not hampered performance at all.

I'd never played Pheonix Wright on the GBA or DS, so I thought I'd grab it. Such an addictive game, anyone who hasn't played needs to buy it.

i can't think of a single openfeint game that doesn't have that initial stutter after the game boots up, a few seconds later, when your openfeint sign-in completes itself. at least none of the ones i own, anyway.

Well, now with upcoming OS 4 and all, OpenFeint has to compete with whatever Apple's come up with. So whether or not you _could_ hypothetically integrate it well, the guys most likely will have to step up their game to stay competitive because often enough, it _isn't_ integrated well, and I suspect that that won't be one of Apple's thing's problems.

I don't know about other people, but since getting the iPad, I've drastically reduced my iPhone app purchases. It either now has to be universal, or really compelling, as I've switched to using the iPad where I can for actual entertainment.

Yeah this thread and the one on Touch Arcade where I mentioned we were thinking of doing Open Feint in Robot Unicorn Attack was the first i'd heard anyone object. :)
