One website, alef.ir, which is a website affiliated to the Revolutionary Guards, focused on suggestions of US links with Iranians protesting at the outcome of the 2009 presidential election. "The interesting parts of this document are those which show that the rioters in the aftermath of the election are linked to the American diplomatic service and they have been consulted by them," it said.

Only reason I linked the TIME interview was due to the fact that two parties who have been affected by certain cables have reacted in certain, albeit surprising, ways.

I'm thinking this is what will happen. A lot of offshoots will be created, and perhaps avoid certain ways that WikiLeaks has produced a "front" of sorts. Information and transparency will be the big sellers.

And how would that work?

And it is far more likely to get completely out of hand when the info is basically spread by a completely faceless group, as well as being much less professional, and much more likely to be used to propagate bullshit.

But yeah, I'm sure you have a better idea of how to run this thing than the people who actually built up wikileaks.

They didn't use to release documents one by one. They got completely overwhelmed with leaks when they published the Afghanistan leak, which is likely part of the Iraq as well as the current leak. They had to stop receiving leaks because they couldn't handle all they were getting, and didn't want to keep the channels open leading people to risk their lives leaking info without it ever being published. They have too much stuff already to publish, heck they have stuff on Bank of America that they announced back in 2009 but have yet to release. Fact is they NEED to have other sites take things up from here.

Hey, maybe this out "Wikileaks staff members quit out of argument with Assange" is bullshit and they are really doing that to setup a parallel organization that will be fed leaks by alternate sources that don't want to deal with Wikileaks. Might as well create your own competition yourself if you know you'll have some down the line anyway! :D

Well, I think both of those views lack the necessary subtlety. The United States has some immutable traditions, which, to be fair, are based on the French Revolution and the European Enlightenment. The United States' Founding Fathers took those further, and the federalism of the United States also, of relatively powerful states trying to constrain federal government from becoming too centralized. Also added some important democratic controls and understandings. So there is a lot of good that has historically come from the United States. But after World War II, during World War II, the federal government of the United States started sucking the resources to the center, and the power of states started to diminish. Interestingly, the First Amendment started overriding states' laws around that time, which I see as a function of increasing central power in the United States. I think the problems with the United States as a foreign power stem from, simply, its economic success, whereby it's, historically at least, a very rich country with a number of people and the desire left over as a result of ... Let me explain this a bit better. The U.S. saw the French Revolution and it also saw the behavior of the U.K. and the other kings and dictatorships, so it intentionally produced a very weak President. The President was, however, given a lot of power for external relations, so as time has gone by, the presidency has managed to exercise its power through its foreign affairs function. If we look at what happened with Obama and health care reform, we see this extraordinary situation where Obama [indecipherable] can order strikes against U.S. citizens overseas but is not able to pass, at least not easily and not in the form that he wanted, a health reform bill domestically. And that seems to be ... the very good idea, which was to try and keep the country free from dictatorship by keeping the presidency weak. But as the United States has grown economically, that has led to a situation where the foreign affairs power is latched on to by central government to increase the power of the government, as opposed to state government. The U.S. is, I don't think by world standards, an exception, rather it is a very interesting case both for its abuses and for some of its founding principles.

It's interesting to note the investigation Spain did against the Russian mafia, and perhaps how deeply entrenched they are within the Russian government - or at the very least having ties to it. Pretty sure most people already had allusions to it though.

A more anonymous group focused more on getting stuff out and less on their media-hungry leader is what the movement needs. I find it ironic that a group bent on routing out corruption and evil and secrecy is lead by a guy who describes his role in the group as:

"I am the heart and soul of this organization, its founder, philosopher, spokesperson, original coder, organizer, financier and all the rest. If you have a problem with me, piss off."

When groups become more about the people involved than the ideas they support, then bad stuff can happen. I believe wikileaks is doing great stuff and hope they keep doing it but I don't really get such a good vibe from Assange.

How does it imply the group is about him? He's the founder, he started it all, it's the equivalent of his own company. Of course the members who don't like him can fuck off. That being said, are they really against him, or is this a ploy to create a fake competitor, a double agent organization of sorts, knowing that it would be likely that the US or others would seek to create an alternate entity they could control themselves anyway, and that they would run to any former member who has a beef with the group??? dun dun dun! :lol

And in the end, that group will have to release more shocking material to get any attention.

Russia's only warm water docks on the western side of the country are on the Black Sea, which is only accessible to open ocean (the Sea of Marmara, the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, into the Atlantic Ocean) via the Turkish Straights. This is an issue because all sea shipped goods to and from Russia, such as cars or other large scale products such as oil MUST come through those straits. Now as you can imagine, there are costs associated with using this strait, so it cuts into business if Turkey is too closely enforcing the tolls.
